Subject: Questions for Medicom
.html
.html

Too late for the moment Tim, I have already spoken to "Yuji" at Medicom.

Medicom no longer have a POTA License.

I have incorporated most of Patrick’s questions without being TOO specific as I would like to test the waters and poll fan favourites before coming to any concrete decisions on what to request (particularly since I will have to pay for a License myself). Jeff, I like your idea of the head swap too!

I asked the following questions:

MEDICOM ULTRA DETAIL FIGURES:

(1) How are the Japanese Medicom Ultra Detail Figures different to those now being distributed in the USA ? Is Medicom still producing these or are you just re-packaging them?

(2) Why did you decide to limit articulation and not articulate elbows, knees, wrists and ankles?

(3) Did you ever consider a 12” or “Larger Scale” version with hair, real clothes and shoes?

(4) Did you/would you ever consider producing PLAY SETS of Ape City, the Space Ship, Ape Management Complex, the “Doomsday Bomb” scene or other choices (like a 3-pack with the 3 orangutans in the assembly), something like the Star Wars “Cinema-Scenes”?

(5) If I negotiate a limited franchisee license with Fox, what would be involved in producing a one-off Fan Club Exclusive Medicom Ultra Detail Figure?

ULTRA DETAIL FIGURES, KUBRICKS, WIN-UP TOYS

(6) How did you get the list of characters you decided to use? Are there any other characters (Lisa, Armando, Mutants etc) you might have done? Did you prototype any figures other than those you used?

(7) Were sales as expected? How many of each figure did you produce and how many sold?

(8) Could you please send a list of ALL PLANET OF THE APES ITEMS made by Medicom including limited release items.

I will keep you all informed of responses and my progress with the limited release project.

Michael

whats up?
If Medicom no longer has a POTA license does this mean thats it for further
figures? Or is it that Medicom doesnt have the right to make any more figures
at this time?
Well hopefully we will see more POTA items, this cant be the end.
I know its a pipe dream but i still pray that someday they will release the
toons on DVD and all of the movies in special edition, battle uncut also.

Hi Tony

A License is an agreement to make a certain amount of product in a
certain time frame. Mego had it, then Kenner, then thankfully Medicom
(and I think Jun Planning since then).

If I get a limited Fan Club License, I should then be able to get
Medicom to do whatever I want in a figure, but only the one at a time I
believe. It changes according to how much you pay.

So it is not the end yet.....

I still say the best hope for Special Eds of the movies lies with how well
this year's new "Alien" set does. It's 9 discs, that's 2 discs per movie
plus the doc. Plus they're movies that have been released recently on DVD
(just not anamorphic video). If these sell well, we're in. If they don't
we'll have to wait for "Apes 2". We can all take a bus from the retirement
home and see it. - - - Jeff

I appreciate your efforts, Michael, but don't get in over your head. POTA
is not "Star Wars", which has a corporation underwriting it's "fan
exclusives". And how much effort is Medicom going to put into a limited
edition figure (though the big fans have shown they were willing to put
their money where their mouth is when the Medicoms were expensive
imports)? - - - Jeff

You're right Jeff.

Here is their answer - good luck interpreting!

I think he is saying yes they would do a figure if I get a license....the Fan Club Limited Licenses don't cost a fortune (so maybe there is SOME hope....if FOX ever replies to me).

Dear, Michael Whitty

Thank you very much for calling, and inquiry for Planet of the Apes figure.

1. Distribution in US

Diamond Comic Distributersm Inc. distributes UDF and KUBRICK - Planet of the Apes. http://www.diamondcomics.com/

2. Specification

This is our products. just we decided so.

3. 4. Planning

We will never plan 12 inches or larger scale...and play set..

5. Exclusive products

Anyway, our license with Fox has already expired.

We will never produce UDF and KUBRICK.

Or, you will contract with 20th Fox directly with payment huge royalty, and get the license to produce such exclusive product (as Medicom is just manufacturer) ?

Again, now we have no plan to continue producing Planet of the Apes toy.

Best regards,

Yuji Katayama

I know what you are saying about POTA not comparing with Star Wars, but
I still think there are a lot more POTA fans out there than we think.
One of the questions I asked Medicom was "How many were made/how many
did you sell?". They did not answer my question, but imagine if 10 000
of each figure was made and sold. I have asked the same question of Joe
Russo and Eric Greene, but no reply (I wonder why they won't tell?).

At least Rittenhouse will publish the number of boxes they produce (I
think they only did 1 000 Twilight Zone boxes), but if they sell 1 000
boxes, it is not to say there are 1 000 fans (some fans may only buy a
pack).

It really would be nice to have an idea how many ape fans are out there.
My suspicion is that the 100 000 or so who went to see the 2001 POTA
movie that first weekend included a large percentage of fans (and maybe
also discouraged them from remaining fans!).

I appreciate your efforts, Michael, but don't get in over your head.
POTA
is not "Star Wars", which has a corporation underwriting it's "fan
exclusives". And how much effort is Medicom going to put into a limited
edition figure (though the big fans have shown they were willing to put
their money where their mouth is when the Medicoms were expensive
imports)? - - - Jeff

Bad news for those wishing to get a line of Simpsons/POTA Figures:

Hey Michael,

Thank you for your suggestion of doing a Simpsons figure based on Planet of the Apes. We have requested the rights to do the figure you have noted below (the custom Zaius figure from “Stop this Planet of the Apes – I Want to Get Off), however, due to possible licensing and legal issues Fox has denied our request. Unfortunately, when Simpsons characters take the look of a character from another licensors movie property it is very difficult to get the rights to replicate the character in the form of a figure.

Thanks again for your request.

Pat

Well, today a box full of all 19 Medicoms finally arrived. At a grand
total of about $152.00 or so (and that includes S&H), that comes to
about $8.00 per figure, which is a pretty damn good deal if you ask
me!

And was it worth it? You betcha. It's just amazing how well done
these lil' buggers are. Zaius looks just like Maurice Evans in
makeup. Cornelius looks a helluva lot like Roddy did in the movie.
Taylor's face could look more like Heston's, but it's close enough.
My hat's off to the dudes at Medicom. It'd be nice to see even more
figures (like Virdon & Burke & Galen... the 5 main Mutants from
BENEATH... Dodge & Landon & Stewart... Lisa & Young Cornelius &
Virgil... MacDonald & MacDonald & Breck & Kolp & Armando &c...

... but these 19 figures are so good, I'm not complaining. It would
be nice to "bend" their legs, so that (for example) you could
pose 'em sitting down in chairs, like during the Q&A session where
Taylor makes the paper airplane, etc. Ah, but I'm lamenting that they
aren't PERFECT. They're better than any of us had any reason to
expect, though.

It's especially nice that they got the "glyphs" down right. It
would've been easy for them to fudge it, as if it wouldn't really
matter to a POTA fan. Thankfully, they took the care to get that
right. Now all I gotta do is see if the round studs on Ursus' poncho
match the real costume...

*** I ordered 'em on EBAY. There's an apeload of POTA stuff available
there, including a lot of individual Medicom figures, but I recommend
that you search out particular offers that have the entire set of 19,
like I did. The seller was actually a toy-store from Pennsylvania,
probably trying to sell off their stuff in bulk. They might just have
more complete sets available (either on EBAY or directly from them).
The item that I bid on had a "buy now for [amount]" option, which was
nice; I didn't have to worry about being outbid by anybody. Sweeeeet!

The address on the shipping label reads:

Good luck trackin' down a similar bunch of Medicoms. I'm more than

You did pretty well there, better than those of us who paid $30 a pop when they were just sold in Japan.

Which figure do you think is best?  I think Lucius is the best of the chimps.  Ursus the best of the gorillas.  Zaius is the ONLY orang!
Nova is the best human.

I would agree with those choices except giving special mention to the "Conquest" chimp and gorilla. Those rock! Lucius is unique but maybe I'd swing toward Cornelius. He's dead on. Despite my luck with the Medicoms, I've yet to get the ape-o-nauts. - - - Jeff

The ape-o-nauts are pretty good too.  Next to Ursus I would say the CONQUEST gorilla has the best face.  The CONQUEST Caesar is very good too.

By the way, I caught the very end of a movie on Cinemax tonight.  It was called VALENTINE and was released last year.  During the end credits they played a song (I didn't catch the title) but it used samples from the "New Identity" cue in PLANET.  It was a pretty cool job.  The movie is on again Thursday morning.  I'll have to tape it.

PLANET is on tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. on Encore.

*** Taylor (both of 'em) could look more like Chuck, but that's a
slight quibble. Zaius looks so much like Maurice Evans in makeup that
it astounds me. Cornelius, too, looks a helluva lot like Roddy. Zaius
may be the only "living" orangutan, but there IS that Lawgiver
statue, which is terrific. I should almost track down another
Lawgiver figure, just so that I can poke holes in it and make fake
blood-drips ("He bleeds! The Lawgiver bleeds!").
I dig that the Ape-onauts' helmets are detachable, and that the
various armaments are also included. Not all of 'em fit the hands of
the characters, like the shield of that CONQUEST gorilla, but am I
complainin'?
All in all, there are 2 Taylors, 2 Corneliuses, 2 Ziras... and it
might've been nice to have detachable clothing for each (so that they
could've had just 1 of each of those), so that they could've done
some other figures once. The other astronauts, or
Honorius/Maximus/President-of-the-Assembly, or the Minister, or
Julius, or any of a whole bunch of other possibilities. They probably
won't be making any more POTA Medicoms, which is sad. But I'm happy
they did these: they did a terrific job, all around.
BTW, my favorites: Ursus, Zaius, Cornelius & Zira. And Taylor in his
astronaut uniform--I managed (just barely!) to get his backpack
thingy onto him. It fits! Too bad it doesn't open up to show all the
goodies they had...

Patrick

P.S. That reminds me: does anybody have any idea what "TX-9" is
supposed to be? There's a joker who has a POTA parody site who jokes
that it's the ANSA version of Tang! I have half a mind to email NASA
just to see if THEY have any idea what Serling & Wilson might've been
referring to! Whadda you guys (and gals, too, Kassidy!) think? Might
they be some vitamin/nutrient stuff? Poison to take, for when they're
dying of starvation & thirst? Insect repellent? Hemorrhoid ointment?
WHAT THE F*** IS 'TX-9', GODDAMMIT!!!

I have the CONQUEST gorilla holding the shotgun in his right hand.  I pushed the right arm against his leg so that he holds the rifle across his lap.  In his left hand I got him to hold the shield.  I squeezed the thumb of the left hand against the palm then push the handle of the shield into place, but you've got to be quick then leave it alone because the grip loosens and the hand won't hold the shield if you move it around too much.  Try it and see.

Waaaaa....Saaaa...

Hi Ape fans!
Alex Ruiz Here.

Listen gang, I've been away for a long while due to the fact that I've been
involved with my site Terminator 3 now at:
www.techcomforces.com

Well anyhow I'm just letting you know for now that I've just bought a DVD
recorder and I've made a 4 hour Planet of the Apes Classic DVD that I'll be
selling soon for $10.00 dirt cheap to all ape fans.

My next project is the ape toons with 13 episodes on one DVD 6 hours long.
Sweet! This DVD recorder kicks butt!

Next is Terminator 3 T.V. segments on a 4 hour DVD.

All DVD will be posted on my site with full contents and mailing
information. I told you all I'll be back and ready to fullfil all DVD
dreams. I can't give them away anymore simply because I'll go bankrupt, but
for $10.00 a DVD it's not only cheap but beyond fair.

Drop by my site and enjoy the media as I plan to post DVD POTA segments just
as soon as I put it on-line to order. My new server is 10 gigs of hard disk
space with 500 gigs of bandwidth and so there's a lot more to be added soon.

Hi Jeff, Rory and all.
As I was making the Clssic POTA DVD I couldn't help but think about all of
you, especially you Jeff. Your Videos are great and they were a huge help.
Be expecting free copies pal.

I'll be back.

Welcome back to the group Alex,
What exactly is that 4 hour Planet of the Apes Classic DVD? Anything extra
that is not already on the regular POTA DVD or behind the apes?

The Toons i'm looking forward to- how is the quality of your toons anyway?
And are they the uncut version of the toons- if i'm right the Ape toon on the
cartoon network are somewhat cut.
Later & thanks
Tony

Hi Alex. Welcome back. What happened? Did they release "Terminator 3"? Did
it bomb?
I checked out your new site. You're the real deal! Maybe you can include
info on Cameron's IMAX film "Ghosts of the Abyss" due next month. Have you
heard about the new T2 DVD coming out, with frame by frame remastering and
Cameron audio commentary?
I thought you should do a combo "Terminator"/"Apes" site, since they're
both your interests (the "Apes" part wouldn't be hard to maintain, since
there's not much going on). You could link them with the 2029 date (the
"Terminator" future, the POTA2001 present).
Anyway, welcome back. Sounds exciting. You're a whiz. - - - Jeff

Not yet, but I must admit that after that first trailer I'm starting to have
POTA 2001 flashbacks. I just hope it's good.

Yeah, I sure DVD buy for me.

The thought did cross my mind, I'm going to wait until after the T3 release.
By then I'll have the time on my hands to do something for POTA Classic.

Hi Tony.
Yeah, just off the top of my head because I'm recording the Oscars just for
the hell of it and I can't view my DVD now...

Star Con '96 (complete)
Mego Commercials
POTA 30th Anniversary Party
Adami's visit to Jeff, In Ape Makup and Zuma Beach
AMC's 30th anniversary marathon
Beneath the Planet of the Apes Promotional Mini-Movie
John Chambers Birthday Party Tribute from Jeff's camcorder (lots of footage
not included in the official release)
Simpsons Musical
POTA PC Game Promotion from E3 Convention
POTA PC Game Introduction
CBS TV Promotion for the 5 movie series
Heston on SNL
Roddy McDowall Hosting the Sci-Fi Apes Week
That's Hollywood's Planet of the Apes Special

And a bit more I can't remember at the moment. Most is from Jeff's tapes plus
a bit more from other POTA Classic collection tapes I have. All is non DVD
official footage and looks just as good as the tapes themselves. Good to
fair but not dancing from left to right on your screen like most of all
those bad quality POTA tapes, and it's all on forever on DVD.

I'll begin to post on my site just as soon as I make the POTA cartoon DVD.
These toons are not from Sci-Fi Channel nor Cartoon network and all are
complete 22 minutes or so (minus commercials) each and all 13 episodes.

Al

Welcome back to the group Alex,
What exactly is that 4 hour Planet of the Apes Classic DVD? Anything extra
that is not already on the regular POTA DVD or behind the apes?

The Toons i'm looking forward to- how is the quality of your toons anyway?
And are they the uncut version of the toons- if i'm right the Ape toon on
the
cartoon network are somewhat cut.
Later & thanks
Tony

In the segment on those who passed last year, they showed Kim Hunter in
"Streetcar", but J. Lee Thompson was shown directing "Conquest".

When they presented the nominees for best costume design at the 1969 Oscars each film had a performer in a costume from the film dance down the runway.  So that was a clip from the Oscars when Morton Haack was nominated for PLANET.

Hey Dave.
Yeah, everytime I switch sites I switch e-mails to suit the site.
This is the skynetproject hotmail e-mail that I used for skynetsite.com no
longer in service. My old site skynetsite.com went upto 51 gigs in bandwidth
one month and they charged me 400.00 for the 11 extra gigs of bandwidth. I
was only allowed 40 gigs per month. So after paying them off I droped that
server like a bad habbit.

Now I have a new server with a new domain name, TechComForces.com which now
gives me 10 gigs of hard drive space total and 500 gigs of bandwidth memory
per month. With this kind of memory I will now have no problemo.

So my new e-mail is now tcf2029 hotmail. But still skynetproject or tcf2029,
skynetproject for the e-group and tcf2029 for the site. You can contact me
on either e-mail. I still have to go through my old sites disks to send you
a copy along with my DVDs so be expecting it soon, just as soon as I finish
my DVDs which won't be much longer.

I finally bought that DVD recorder for about 480.00 bucks and it's
fantastic. Much better and easier than my DVD burner with no B.S. glitches
and bugs as I use to get with my PC in the past. It's really great!

I will be returning POTA Classic to the net on the same server as
TechComForces.com following the release of T3 in the same style you see for
T3. A more updated and advanced web site as you see now for Terminator 3
with media clips and all. While I was making the Terminator 3 web site I was
thinking to myself how great it would be to have a site like this for POTA.
If Terminator 3 is Great, it will be half and half, each with it's site. If
T3 sucks as did POTA 2001, it will souly be POTA Classic and remain so. As I
don't see the point in keeping a fan site on a sucky sequel :o) But I still
have hope as it won't be Burton directing this time around. Mostow is really
good at directing so we'll soon see.

I had no idea you were still with the group Dave, cool, at least you now
know what I've been doing since last time we spoke. I was going to contact
you just as soon as the DVDs were complete but it seems you beat me too it.
Cool. I'll be keeping you all posted on the this e-group. I'll be back.

I've been keeping tabs on T3 on your site. I like that I can download
trailers and stuff. I have trouble with the official sites. So far, I don't
know. I like the chick but Arnold seems kind of tired, like the Terminator's
batteries are running low. And the new John Connor doesn't work for me. They
should've just went with a new character, since there's no LInda Hamilton
either. The directing seems OK, but it just seems like more of the same. The
good sequels throw in surprises Too soon to talk, but we'll see. - - - Jeff

Yeah, I know what you mean. Sequels now a days don't get better, they just
get worst. As all Sci-Fi films mostly base they're story on Special Effects
than real story telling. I just hope it dosn't turn out like another SW
prequel. Eric Greene was right, movies are not what they used to be as far
as real depth and story telling. Claire Danes said in an interview the other
day how Terminator 3 will be a quick pased action movie. And already just
reading that I was having POTA 2001 flash backs. No depth, no story, just
special effects and action. It gave me the shivers. Terminator has always
been my second favorite Sci-Fi film following POTA and that's why I'm pumped
for it, but if this movie turns out as bad as POTA 2001, I'm not even going
to bother with any more countdowns and have one awesome POTA Classic Fan
Site. And with 10 gigs of web space, I can even have all 13 POTA toons
online in real player format. And thats just the tip of the iceburg. :o)

this before. Looks like a scene from the Apes cartoon when the astronauts

It would be neat to find that location and take a picture in front of that

Please read the attached email from Rittenhouse (looks like Kass was right – they are looking for MORE not LESS!).

As I have mentioned before, personnel from the TV Series, POTA 2001 and Return characters are out – only those who were in the first 5 “Classic” movies will be asked to sign.

So I repeat, James Whitmore, David Watson, Jerry Goldsmith, Bill Creber and Mort Abrahams would be my strong first picks to sign.

Does anyone have any other strong suggestions?

Does anyone know where to find any of the 5 aforementioned (Jeff, do you know how to get in touch with Bill?)?

Here again is the list of those who have agreed to sign:

    Charlton Heston

    Linda Harrison

    Buck Kartalian

    Don Pedro Colley

    William Windom

    Jason Evers

    Natalie Trundy

    Paul Williams

    Austin Stoker

    Ricardo Montalban

    Wright King

    Lou Wagner

    Bobby Porter

    Let me know.

For the autographs, we won't (and can't) limit them to 9.  I can't eliminate people after I've made commitments to them, so that would be silly.  However, we are looking to make a 6,000 box run, with 2 autographs per box, so we will need at least 14-15 people (or more) in order to get to 12,000 signed cards.

If you have contacts for any of the other folks that you'd like me to get, please send them along.

Re timing, I think we are looking at end of this year, early next year.

    Thanks.

If you scroll right down on the message from Rittenhouse you will see
they are talking late this year/early next year for the Trading
Cards. It is a very good sign to me that the autographs will be
organised well in advance. It is also a good sign that Rittenhouse
is not only asking for help, but acting on it. I believe the
Signature Cards will be signed soon and put aside, so none of the
    signers inconsiderately die or anything!

I don't have many contacts really - Jeff is the one with most
    contacts in the POTA community.

I noticed on the "old" group that Alex Ruiz has returned and he is

Don Murray (Governor Breck - CONQUEST), Eric Braeden (Dr Hasslein - ESCAPE) and France Nuyen (Alma - BATTLE) are all good suggestions.  With a bit of shuffling I can still get quite a bit of balance in the 3 autographs per movie table, except in battle.

    Fair enough.
And as I did explain to the group long ago, due to computer problems I
couldn't follow through and make them with my DVD Burner. And now due to
finances I can't give them away for free. So a more than fair price of
$10.00 for a 4 hour DVD and $10.00 for a 6 hour DVD toons is way beyond
fair. Jeff and Dave are excluded from this for the simple reasons that don't
concern anyone else. But in the end I think that at least there being made
and offered to all who wish to have them. They will be made I promise you
that, and they will be offered shortly following the release of T3.

What will be offered is POTA Classic Collection, POTA Toons, Battle UNcut
and T3 Televised Segments. I decided to wait until after the T3 release so I
will have the time to do it right, and not do a bad rush job. If you wish to
buy them and burn a dozen copies and give them away, that's fine too. The
issue is not money, but simply to offer this to all you guys and not go
bankrupt at the sametime. I just hope you understand that.

And now due to finances I can't give them away for free. So a more than fair price of  $10.00 for a 4 hour DVD and $10.00 for a 6 hour DVD toons is way beyond
    fair.

Sounds good.  I can't wait to see the toons in full digital glory without the tracking problems associated with tape.  I hope you have a PayPal account for our payment convenience.  Sorry if that seems demanding, but I have Progressive insurance.

*** Hey, Al! Welcome back to the Planet that went Ape!
It's good to hear about your upgrade; rest assured, I'll be ordering
the lot once you get 'em up and runnin'. I already got the "BATTLE UN-
CUT" from you, but for some reason it doesn't play on my DVD machine
(which is a "GE1105P", if that means anything to ya)--yet I'd just as
soon order another one from you, since your new DVD burner set-up
just may produce a more "playable" (on my DVD machine) version.

I'll hafta check out your T3 site; like a lotta folks, I'm crossin'
my fingers and hoping it'll be better than some of the "buzz"... but
you never know until you take a bite how it's gonna taste. I wouldn't
necessarily trust Claire Danes' opinion regarding how this flick
would rate as an SF action flick--she's not exactly known primarily
for her roles in such movies! The process of making it probably has
her assuming all sorts of things about what makes an action flick
a "standard type", and all that. I doubt if T3 will be anywhere near
as good as the first two, but if it doesn't outright SUCK, I'll be
happy enough. And... who knows? Maybe they'll surprise us and it'll
be the best of the bunch? Probably not, but...

It's nice to know the "RETURN TO THE POTA" cartoons you'll be
purveying will be "uncut". If the video & audio quality are good,
I'll be thrilled. I bought a set of 'em on VHS a couple years ago,
and the quality was, well... not as good as I would've liked.
Especially for the cash I put up for 'em. For $10.00, if the ones
you'll be providing are even better, it's a virtual steal. So, bring
    it on!

    Hey Patrick.
Yeah, when it comes to DVD-R recordable discs not all DVD players will play
them unless 100% compatible. All new DVD players made today now play them
while DVD players prior to the creation of DVD burners won't. The DVDs I
make are in NTSC format so if you live overseas and use the PAL format,
chances are you won't be able to view them on your DVD player unless you
have DVD region free player that plays both NTSC and PAL format.

But over all if you live in the U.S./Canada and do have the latest NTSC
format DVD player, DVD-Rs won't be a problem. And for anyone that doesn't,
DVD-Rs are 100% compatible with computer DVD-ROMS no matter where you live
    in the world.

And while the DVD recorder is much different and better than the DVD burner,
I don't want to make any promises. Although there may be a better chance for
non compatible DVD-R players to play these discs. I have four different NTSC
DVD players and they seem to play on all four strangely enough.

    Best,
    Al

True.  It's best to record DVDs on DVD+R discs.  Old and new machines alike will all accept the +R discs.  While +R is the more widely accepted of the 2, as more and more update their older players as they wear out, +R will lose its relevance.  So it's hard to say whether -R or + R will prevail.  But if anything gets phased out it will be CDs.  Compact Discs simply don't have the data capacity of DVDs no matter which disc you're burning.  In the future all files, whether sound, image or video will al be stored on either DVDs, or portable hard drives, until they're replaced by some form of bubble or organic memory systems.  How's that coming Pat?  I'm sure you're up on the latest new technology . . . if you're not inventing it yourself.

Well the good note on that is that my DVD recorder is brand new so the DVD-R
will always be around. And if the DVD+R becomes more popular the DVD-R blank
disc will only become a lot cheaper. So there is a good foot note there.

Yeah, I've been looking at those and a few others on the web. $100.00 for a
100 Blank DVDs is pretty good. The only set back is the time it takes to
burn them, label them, package them and sending a good while at the post
office especially with overseas postage paper work and so on.

Just to give you an idea. It takes 1 hour to burn 1 DVD of 4.7 gigs, now try
burning 20 or 30 DVDs to fill out orders. Basicly it's like have a second
job. And that's why I won't sell them for no more or no less then $10.00
    each.

I love my Apex, except for one problem.  Either I or my hubby lost the 'mote, or the kids buried it alive, etc.  None of the universal remotes worked, either, not even the Apex one we tried.  So it was buy a replacement remote for $25 or get another player of the same kind for $70.00.  So we have two now, one for the kids, and only one remote.  God help those children if this remote disappears.

*** Alas, I'm not the techno-geek I'd LIKE to be! I read "POPULAR
SCIENCE", "POPULAR MECHANICS", "DISCOVER", and "SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN",
but open up a VCR or DVD player & show me its innards and I'm as
baffled as the average guy. It's one thing to have a basic
understanding of most scientific concepts, but the TECHNICAL
APPLICATION of those concepts can get so complex and complicated,
that it takes a certain frame-of-mind to get into the "nuts-&-bolts"
of it. My oldest brother has that gift but, alas, I never acquired
it. That especially sucks when the car starts making noises it
probably shouldn't! Knowing what an alternator does is nice, but not
knowing how to fix one means shelling out dough to a mechanic.

As for the memory-storage capabilities of modern state-of-the-art
devices, it'll all pale into insignificance when QUANTUM COMPUTERS
come along. When the transistor came along, it made it possible to
cram a huge room full of vacuum-tube computers into the PCs we use
today. Quantum computing will enable us to store immense quantities
of memory in microscopic-sized devices. I'm not sure how far off that
technology is (and, for all we know, the Military already's been
making use of it, just like "stealth" technology and all that), but
I'd say it's a given in the next 10 to 20 years. By then, a DVD will
seem as bulky as those old vinyl LPs were 20 years ago, when CDs came
out; you'll need only a small disc about 3 centimeters in diameter
and maybe 5 millimeters thick... about the size of that disc that
Virdon retrieved from his spaceship at the end of "ESCAPE FROM
    TOMORROW"...

Hey, this IS a "PLANET OF THE APES" site, so I just HAD to work in a
    reference!

    Patrick

P.S. If, after ordering & receiving Alex's newer burned DVDs, they
DON'T play on my current player, it won't be much of a problem, since
I do plan on upgrading to a better machine... eventually. For now,
this one serves my purposes; but there's always room for improvement.

It's been announced that "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson will direct a remake of his favorite movie, "King Kong", for release in 2005. So what? Well, just by the very fact that it's Jackson, currently a cinematic god, this will be in Fox's face and may finally convince them to dust off their own ape franchise and try again. "Jurassic Park 4" has also recently been announced, which cost about as much and made about as much as our own POTA2001. Fox won't be able to hold out much longer! For more on the Kong remake, go to www.comingsoon.net . - - - Jeff

Please pardon a certain amount of incredulity on my part if I say I've hear that one before.  No offence Al, but I'm still waiting for a tape of the talk show interviews from 2001, not to mention the extended Beneath.  So though quite lofty, your projects do seem to lack a certain amount of, shall we say, follow through.  But I'm pullin' for ya!

      Hi All.

Recently we were discussing the POTA shows in the UK, somewhat similar to the Bill Blake/Paula Christ shows, but completely different!

This is one of the best articles I have read – it really puts you there. Thanks to John Roche and Dave Ballard and of course the Author Richard Cross. I will place this in parts as it is long, but WELL WORTH THE READ!!!

John and Dave, any more photos (especially better quality scans of the ones used in the article that promote the shows – how cool are they?)!!!???

      'Apemania' in the
      UK , 1975-1977
      by Richard Cross

From Simian Scrolls Issue 4 2001

When 'Escape to Tomorrow' premiered on US TV at 8pm on Friday 13 September 1974 , CBS executives were in confident mood. Expectations for the new one-hour weekly Planet of the Apes TV series were extremely high, and all the indications pointed to a critical and ratings hit for the new show.

Plans for an episodic Apes TV series had first been mooted during the pre production phase of Conquest, and scripts and outlines had been well into development by the time of Battle 's release. When the TV deal was finally clinched, the terms of the agreement confirmed the faith that both CBS and Fox had in the Apes' franchise. A full-length first season, comprising 24 episodes, was green-lighted, with the companies so keen to keep up the momentum (following the first TV broadcasts of the Apes movies in the US in the summer of 1974) that CBS decided that production of a 'pilot' (to test audience and station reaction) was unnecessary, and that work on a full series should begin as soon as was practicable. It was quickly apparent that US TV viewers did not share Fox's and CBS's unbridled enthusiasm for the new Apes show. Critical reaction was mixed, and, once curiosity had been satisfied, the all-important viewing figures for Planet of the Apes began to slide - from what had been fairly modest levels to begin with. Advertisers stopped clamouring for slots, and CBS's doubts about leaving the most important hour in Friday night primetime in the hands of a bunch of Apes began to grow. If studio executives had been hasty (to the point of being reckless) in commissioning Apes, their solution to the tepid reception which had greeted the show was just as rash and ill-considered. In no sense was the show a flop in the US - it was certainly not a ratings winner, as its opening percentage share of the Friday night TV audience hovered just below the minimum the network could accept. The problem was that it had been sold to everyone as a 'sure-fire hit', and was therefore seen to be 'failing'.

There were a number of options open to CBS and Fox: first, to stick with the show, promote it, and wait for the audiences to climb back up. Second, to reposition the show in a less 'demanding' slot in the schedules, allowing it time to build a loyal fan-base. Third, to put the show on 'hiatus' and look to 're-tool' it. And fourth, to shorten the first season run and re-launch an 'improved' second season of the show the following spring. But production costs on Apes were extremely high - as much as £200,000 per episode, on some estimates - and Fox and CBS decided to cut their losses. Production on Planet of the Apes was halted and the show was axed in December 1974, after fourteen episodes had been completed and thirteen broadcast in the US . From such an optimistic beginning, Planet of the Apes' first small-screen adventure had lasted less than four months.

Such a fate would not befall a high-profile genre programme in today's international TV market because few shows would ever again be taken 'on trust' in the same way, but would have to prove their commercial (and perhaps, later, their artistic) worth from the outset. The current run-away genre hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for example, secured a first season run of just twelve episodes - and that after a twenty minute presentation reel had been produced and approved, and the pilot episode re shot, complete with casting changes. When it comes to the question of broadcasters allowing shows sufficient time to build their fan base, it's worth recalling that the satellite/cable station Sky One pulled its original premier run of Buffy part way through season one - because too few viewers were tuning in. Long before the breath-taking conclusion of season five, Buffy had become Sky One's flagship, Friday night show - but only after Buffy's terrestrial airing on BBC2 ignited interest in the slayer's exploits.

Several recent genre shows have also been saved from cancellation by the injection of finance from other networks, often from other countries, willing to shoulder some of the costs and co-produce the programmes. Had international co-production been routine back in 1974, then the first country from which finance ought to have been forthcoming to save Planet of the Apes was the UK .

As for the sequel, I think that's Fox's big quandry. If they do a sequel,
how do they get past people's distaste for it (since such movies live or die
on opening weekend)? Starting over is a possibility, but the last one is so
obviously a set-up for a sequel, will people feel ripped off anyway?
Personally, I think there's enough there for a good sequel if they get
writers who can do science fiction, and the studio gives them the time to do
it right. The cast was good and the characters basically unexplored. But
starting from scratch would work for me, too. Damn, I wish Jackson was doing
"Apes", not just an ape. - - - Jeff

Really? I dunno... that seems kind of pointless, to remake a film only
two years after it's been remade. In any case, I don't think we'll ever
see a sequel, considering the backlash the first one took, the lackluster
response to the comics, and the fact that the spinoff books didn't sell
well. I'd go see it if we did... but I'm not holding my breath.

By the way, can someone tell me if, after Quick's "The Fall" and the first
two young adult novels, any other POTA2001 novels have been
released? I never saw any here in the NY area. Thanks...

      Rich

I came to my senses. :o)

The only one good performance I really enjoyed was by Tim Roth, other than
that the film would have been a complete bomb without him. And Although a
sequel may involve Tim Roth, I don't think I would enjoy a sequel seeing
apes in suits and ties. Fox completely screwed up the chances for a good
      sequel, that's for sure.

      The Lord of KING KONG
RINGS director to remake classic 1933 film
      Dateline: Monday, March 31, 2003

      By: PATRICK SAURIOL
      By: News Editor
      Source: Universal Pictures press release

Director Peter Jackson has finally gotten his precious. After earning critical and commercial acclaim for two LORD OF THE RINGS films, Universal Pictures has agreed to allow Jackson to remake the classic 1933 RKO Radio Pictures KING KONG. Jackson wrote the script for his version of KONG about five years ago (together with RINGS writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) but at the time Universal passed on the notion of greenlighting the film. See how things change when your previous two films make a billion dollars at the box office? "No film has captivated my imagination more than KING KONG ," Jackson said in a press release yesterday. "I'm making movies today because I saw this film when I was 9 years old. It has been my sustained dream to reinterpret this classic story for a new age. "The story of Kong offers everything that any storyteller could hope for: an archetypal narrative, thrilling action, resonating emotion and memorable characters. It has endured for precisely these reasons and I am honored to be a part of its continuing legacy." Universal wants to release the film sometime around the holiday 2005 period. As with his RINGS films, Jackson's company, Wingnut Films, will produce the new KONG movie and the WETA special effects company will create the movie's FX. Jackson wrote his version of KONG just as the original film was set in the 1930s, and the movie will be set in that same period. "Anyone who has seen the first two installments of THE LORD OF THE RINGS knows that Peter will bring Kong to life as a real character," said Stacey Snider, Chairman, Universal Pictures. "His vision for the tragic tale of the misunderstood creature, with its poignant character development and technological wonder, will make KING KONG compulsory viewing for any real movie lover."

When he says “reinterpret”, does that word remind anyone of the word “reinvent”?

Director Peter Jackson has finally gotten his precious. After earning critical and commercial acclaim for two LORD OF THE RINGS films, Universal Pictures has agreed to allow Jackson to remake the classic 1933 RKO Radio Pictures KING KONG. Jackson wrote the script for his version of KONG about five years ago (together with RINGS writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) but at the time Universal passed on the notion of greenlighting the film. See how things change when your previous two films make a billion dollars at the box office? "No film has captivated my imagination more than KING KONG," Jackson said in a press release yesterday. "I'm making movies today because I saw this film when I was 9 years old. It has been my sustained dream to reinterpret this classic story for a new age. "The story of Kong offers everything that any storyteller c

        .

If Apes quickly became a TV misfire in the
US, in Britain the show was an immediate and major hit, sparking a surge in popular interest in the Apes canon, which peaked in the years 1975 to 1977. Broadcast across the ITV network (with the inexplicable exception of Scottish ITV) only weeks after its US transmission, Planet of the Apes was an instant success in the U1K, drawing in (and holding) loyal audiences of between ten and twelve million viewers. If the Apes films had been moderate successes at the UK box office, it was the broadcast of the live-action TV series which really saw 'Apemania' take hold in Britain. None of which, sadly, proved to be of any interest to the studio number-crunchers in the USA, anxiously calculating the 'dollar worth' of the ailing show. British TV viewers were the first in the world to see the thirteenth Apes episode The Liberator, which had been yanked from the US run and not transmitted in the States.

The first edition of Marvel UK's new weekly Planet of the Apes comic appeared in newsagents in the middle of October 1974, just as press and popular interest in the Apes phenomenon in general and in the TV series in particular was reaching a new high. Issue one, featuring the opening segment of Marvel's adaptation of the original Apes film, and an illustrated feature on John Chamber's miraculous make-up, came with a garish free poster.

Playgrounds across the country were full of excited kids poring over every page. Issue two was something of an abrupt disappointment, as it became apparent that from now on Boulle's finest would not have it all their own way, but would have to compete for space in the 36-pager with other Marvel strips such as 'Warrior of Mars' and 'The Power of Ka-Zar'. Marvel had set up its
UK operations in 1973 and was slowly building a roster of domestic titles. The weekly British Apes comic was in actuality a reprint of the monthly US Apes magazine, complete with new cover artwork for UK readers. The US version went on to last for 29 issues. In the UK, the same contents were eked out over 139 weekly editions. The acclaimed full-colour reprints of Marvel's film adaptations of Planet and Beneath produced for the American market were never released on this side of the Atlantic, where the Apes title evolved (or perhaps more accurately 'regressed') in its own peculiarly British way.

In the same week that the first British Apes comic was released, Marvel UK also launched Dracula Lives, a new and suitably light-weight weekly 'spine-tingler' for young teens. From the outset, Marvel's intention to fuse the new titles once their respective strengths and weaknesses became clear was never in doubt halving production costs and combining their individual readerships. The merger came on 23 June 1976, with issue 88, and while the Apes retained lead billing on the masthead, in the three feature format the simian page-count was now often pushed down to as few as eight pages. Worse was soon to follow.

By the end of February 1977, there were no Dracula stories in Planet of the Apes / Dracula Lives, and Marvel had resorted to republishing its Beneath adaptation from less than two years earlier just to fill up pages at the back end.

        When, on
2 March 1977, the Apes were stripped of their top billing and obliged to Join the long established four-story Mighty World of Marvel, fighting for space alongside Hulk, Daredevil and Captain Marvel, the end was clearly in sight. This latest change also hiked the Apes issue numbering from 123 to 231 in a single bound. Just three months later, on 15 June 1977, the inevitable happened, and with little ceremony Marvel announced that it had dropped Planet of the Apes from its UK list.

        The
UK comic had remained an uneven and unpredictable title from the very beginning. Its film adaptations were always convincing and (in the days before VHS) much welcomed by Apes enthusiasts. The cover artwork could be stunning and the new and original graphic fiction imaginative and well rendered. Equally, the cover art could be of dismally low quality, and the new stories lazily plotted and ineptly illustrated. It was always a mixed bag of monkeys.

The 'Apes Forum' letter pages were routinely full of as much criticism as of praise bemoaning the poor (and sometimes plainly misleading) front covers, and the bulking out of the magazine with non-ape material (some of which was serviceable enough, but much of which was by-the-numbers Marvel super-heroism). What the comic was indispensable for were the behind the scenes features on all aspects of the Apes film and TV world, and the full-page colour posters of Apes characters and stars. Even the most dedicated of young Apes fans took scissors to their precious comic collection to cut out wall art that was hard to track down elsewhere (if we ignore the dreadful cartoon style Apes wallpaper that briefly appeared in DIY shops at about this time - and we should).

James cameron told me at a "Titanic" screening that his take would be
similar to the first 2 movies "plus some new ideas". Later I heard it was
"Terminator"esque. But at least he knows how to tell science fiction. - - -

You should go back for the last two years and read the archives here, Johnnyx59.  We've covered this ad nauseam.

By the way, I was eight too when I first saw PLANET, in April 1968.

I was just thinking the samething. Cameron makes the biggest movie in film
history then FoX has the nerve to question Cameron's ideas for Planet of the
Apes. So they then go with Burton the master mind?
              I don't get it.

I would have loved to have seen Schwarzenegger and Cameron teaming up for
Planet of the Apes. And although most POTA didn't like the idea of
Schwarzenegger, it sure as hell would have been better then the mess FoX
              came up with in 2001.

Yeah, I've seen that model a dozen times. It's located on the third floor of
Planet Hollywood hanging from the roof on wires. Very nice model. Can't say
for sure if it's an original movie prop, but if it is, perhaps it was used
              in the ship's sinking scene.

              Going... going.. gone.

A friend of mine sent me some video footage they took in the Florida,
              Downtown Disney, Planet Hollywood.

It shows a large model of Taylor's spacecraft. (I can't tell from the
video but I'd guess around 6 feet)

Does anyone know anything about it? Is it the original studio model -
              a replica?

From what I heard, Cameron's later ideas were more like "Escape" meets the
"Terminator", with apes from the future coming to modern times to help
destroy humanity and pave the way. Would've probably been "Terminator" in
reverse, with Arnie as the good guy. This wasn't an internet rumor, but I
read it in an established magazine (probably "Cinescape" or something). The
only thing I heard straight from Cameron is that it would've been like the
first two "Apes". There was a rumor that Cameron was going to continue the
original series, bridging "Battle" and "Planet", but I don't believe that. A
top guy like Cameron (or Burton) would have to start fresh. Plus
              state-o-the-art makeups wouldn't mesh with the originals. - - - Jeff

              Hey alex,

That's fantastic! I have another poem "Thade" if you are interested.
Thypenticle thought it was good enough to be posted on poetry website
but I declined. In spite of "Destiny" and "Thade" I still consider
myself an awful poet. The novel I posted on your site has really
bloomed. Thanks to you, I have inhereted readers who won't let me
quit until I have typed the last word. I have a one page synopsis. If
you are interested I can send it on over. After all, it was you,
Prophecysite, that started me on this road of determination to write
a classic POTA novel. I have a dream. :0) Wendy

Yeah--nice pics. Is it the same model they had in the background on
that Mark Hamill-hosted special about sci-fi in the movies? And who's
right about the size--is it 3 feet long or more like 6?

It's too bad REVELL didn't ever make a model of this ship, the
                bastards.

I saw a display of POTA stuff at the Motion Picture Academy in '96 with an
Icarus. But it was more like 3', not 6'. - - - Jeff

                Yep, that's it.
Notice how it's being held by the wires tied to the roof of Planet
Hollywood. No more than 3 feet not 6, take it from one who saw it in person
                many times.

Sorry Jeff but I'd rather not cover POTA 2001 on the site.
This will be a true blue POTA Classic Site.
And I won't countdown a sequel if made, once this site is complete and on
line it will be running on autopilot til 3978. :o)

But of course fan art like Wendy's "Thade" is welcome as all fan art will
be. But that's as far as I will go with POTA 2001.

Waters wanted to use quotes from 2001:A Space Odyssey in the background of this song, but Kubrick would not allow it.

Needless to say, as with most things Kubrick denied the general public (such as DVDs and VHS of A Clockwork Orange), when he died this ceased. If you get Waters’ latest release CD (“In The Flesh”) it has a live recording of “Perfect Sense”, complete with HAL having a “nervous breakdown”.

Of course, Roger wrote all Pink Floyd’s lyrics from 1973 (Dark Side of the Moon) to The Final Cut. He then went solo.

I met him in Sydney before a concert almost one year ago today and he signed a t-shirt for me.

What does this have to do with POTA? Nothing.

                Michael
