These are my POTA action figure impressions (Medicom Vs. Sideshow).

1.) Medicoms: bigger (huge) selection +
2.) Sideshow: more poseable +
3.) Medicoms: cheaper (Some @ $1.99) +
4.) Sideshow: cooler accessories +
5.) Medicoms: fun size +
6.) Sideshow and Medicom: great likenesses +
7.) Medicoms: Ape-o-naut grouping +
8.) Sideshow: nice boxes +

I like the color display of the Medicoms all parked together in my
library. The small size makes a nice collection.

I think I prefer the Medicoms and somewhat regret my investment in
the Sideshow dolls.

I agree with Elaine. The Medicoms somehow seem less toy-like
to me.

+++John, much as I hate to crush you, I'm with the other guys on this one. In general, the female ape guest stars were excellent and the human females were pretty horrific, but I'm sorry to say I found Fauna the one flaw in an otherwise excellent episode.  Now, I didn't say she wasn't moving or didn't invoke pathos.  She just needed some subtlety, some layers.

Well, maybe I ENJOY crushing you.

I just heard that Johnny Carson has died. One of my earliest POTA
memories is when Kim & Roddy went on the Tonight Show. They brought
along Baby Milo and he bit Johnny's finger. Beyond that the POTA
films always premiered on Friday nights and we were allowed to stay
up to watch the Tonight Show on those nights. So in many ways Johnny
is loosely linked to POTA in my mind.
I'm sure everyone's thought and prayers go out to his wife and
children and of course his protégé, David Letterman.

Hi James: I checked CNN and they were showing tribute clips to
Johnny Carson. He died at 79, attributed to emphezema. I vaguely
remember one night during 1972 or '73 while "Battle for the Planet of
the Apes" was being filmed, singer Paul Williams (who played Virgil
in Battle) showed up in the full costume of his ape character and
proceeded to sing nonchalantly. They've shown clips of this on later
Carson anniversary shows, if I can get a screen grab, I'll post it to
Photos.

I just heard the sad news also about Johnny Carson . But does anybody have or know where to get that appearance with Paul Williams in full Ape costume- if so maybe that can go on the Ape rarities DVD- I think hunter has plans to work on one.

Now, it seems they only release an older (classic)
film in theatres if there is a new reworked print of
it in existance. Didn't they do that to Planet for a
few screenings? Didn't someone here see that? It seems
if they have already restored it they might as well
play it ! I'll gladly fly to NYC to see it on the big
screen!

There are still a few theatres in NY that do retrospectives. A few years ago they did that with the Apes series but alas I never got to go. I did see the Japanese version of the first Godzilla with English subtitles on the big screen last year it was pretty cool.

I don't know if this has been posted but there was a interview with a
big wig at Sideshow concerning their 12" POTA figures. He is pretty
frank about the lack of support for the line (Come on guys BUY MORE
APES!) however, he does say that they is going to be more Apes
previewed at Toy Fair. Here's the link:

http://systems.figures.com/Features/index.htmlshow_article=39374&domain=figures.com&dom=fig&domain_id=4

All that has been said, in various char rooms, is that Brent has been
sculpted. It came straight from the sculpter himself, Mat Falls
during an online chat.

And Toy Fair is set for next month. I'm hoping that they will
finally roll out their 1/4 scale Apes: Cornelius and Zaius! They
announced plans for them at last year's Toy Fair but I think they
were waiting to see how their 12" did. They are expensive BUT WELL
WORTH IT! I have their 1/4 scale Hellboy and he is AWESOME!

I wish I could say that the Medicom were cheaper... I purchased them
when they were Japanese exclusives at $30 a pop and NO SIGN of
Diamond Distribution picking them up. It really ticked me off to see
them SO cheap later on. Oh well.

Don't get me wrong... I do like the Medicoms. However they have
their limitations.

1) They have VERY limited posability.
2) Sloppy paint ops.
3) They have a hard time holding thier accessories (Zira Ape-O-Naut!)
4) Bland or strange posing of figures (again Zia Ape-O-Naut)
5) Scale problems... Taylor is WAY TOO TALL. He is almost the size
of the Lawgiver.

I, for one, favor the Sideshow line. We will see this February at
Toy Fair how they plan to extend the line.

Hi: I *may* have a clip of Paul Williams appearing in ape makeup on
The Johnny Carson Show, from approximately the 1977 anniversary of
The Tonight Show. I have to do some hunting, it should be at the end
of one of these old Beta tapes in my collection going back many
years. If I find it, I'll send a note to the list.

I should have a few other Apes rarities, including video of the 9-6-
77 CBS Late Movie opening for "Escape," the audio of which is posted
in Files in the mp3 folder. Will advise of what else I find.

Even if they do preview something at the show doesn't mean it will come out... After all, you just posted that a big wig at Side Show is disappointed in the sales, so they might not carry on with them... Just being previewed there doesn't guarantee it will be released...

If they pull of an ape-o-naut set, I'll probably soften a bit.
However, it was almost unanimous in a previous discussion that they

I haven't ordered the whole Sideshow line, but I've got a few now:
Cornelius, Zira, the 2 Zaiuses. I prefer the Medicoms for both their
look and size for displaying. However, Sideshow could completely win

Medicom vs Sideshow?

Hmm, that's tough. I love the variety and the detail that Medicom
achieved. I mean, I never noticed that Cornelius's spacesuit boots in
Escape didn't have the same straps that Zira and Milo's did, until I
noticed it on the Medicom figures.

For me, Medicoms biggest drawback is articulation. As a G.I.Joe
collector I love action figures with a lot of articulation. That
alone sways me to chooising Sideshow over Medicom. Plus, the glut of
products in scale (1/6) with the Sideshow figures, makes for a huge
potential for customizing additional figures and dioramas.

Good points, Ray. The GI Joe size market makes for an enormous
selection of accessories for the Sideshow figures. Personally, I'm
drawn to the size of figures they make for Star Wars. Although I
don't collect SW, I do wish that Apes had a similar line of smaller
figures. The lower cost would allow for so many more characters and
scenarios. Imagine being able to set up a mini diorama of Taylor's
trial scene with all of the members of the tribunal. The
possibilities would be endless. Anyone know which company makes
those smaller Star Wars figures?

Look at it this way.  If you by them at both
prices you can average the cost of the more

Not according to Carson's website. They have it set up so you can
search for all the appearances of a guest:
http://www.johnnycarson.com/carson/search/index.jsp
It also tells you if that episode is featured on any of the released
videos. There's no notation of that show (6/21/71) being featured
any of the videos. The same is true of any of Paul Williams'
apperances.

any episode on VHS from Carson's website at one time, but they
discontinued it because of lack of interest.
Now that interest in Carson will likely increase and that it is much

Not Kenner... Kenner made the vintage line between 1978-1985. Hasbro
bought them and disolved the name in the mid to late 90's. SO Hasbro
is currently making the figures.

Sure the Medicom line has variety... but give Sideshow some time...
sheez! Medicom line was released in the span over a year or two.
Sideshow has only been releasing their Apes for the last two or three
months! And if Sideshow unveils Brent and a Mutant this Toy Fair that
would be two figures that Medicom never made (not coiunting those
Kubricks).

Thanks to group member Dghprobe for uploading an audio file of an
original 1974 CBS promo for the TV series.
    http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Audio/74Apespromo.mp3

I remember this promo very well since it ran most of the summer of
1974. I was disappointed that it was mostly clips from the films and
showed very little of the series.

This and some other great Audio clips provided by Dghprobe are
available in the files section at
    http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Audio/

By change Dghprobe, do you have any of these on video?

It's a difficult language.  The hiragana and katakana aren't really a problem, it's the kanji.  I guess they thought having two alphabets of 45 character each and again as many variations was just too easy.  So they decided to throw in a few thousand Chinese characters, that are pictographic rather than phonetic, as well.  Each with a few different Japanese readings as well as the Chinese readings, and mean different things depending on the order, or where you put a dot.  And just for good measure they switch back and forth between the alphabets depending on the word, or even use both in the same word.  Add then add romanji (the roman letters we use) to that and the various accepted spellings over the years, and the fact that the grammar is "almost" a mirror image of English.  A perfect reverse would again be too easy.  And then throw in the idioms, that in English sound like Monkey Apple Carburetor, and you get a lovely alphabet soup, that I highly recommend to anyone going into cryptography for any of the major intelligence agencies. Don't forget your secret decoder ring.

Marvel UK POTA #15 has one of the best colour back cover posters ever-
--if memory serves, it's the two soldiers from The Trap and one of my
favourite Apes images of all time. John, Scrolls.

I ordered a tape with the unaired pilots for Rat Patrol & Mc Hale's Navy and what do I get? The Garrison's Gorillas pilot with Ron Harper. Ron is actually very good in this pilot many years before the APES TV series.

I did the same thing Tim...had the little audio casette recorder (remember the record button was always red and would only work when you held it and Play down simultaneously?) and taped the Apes films when the premiered on CBS a year before the series.

I recently got a good copy of The Neanderthal Man. Not as good as I remembered on Creature Feature in NY in the 70s but it was worth watching.
