I've seen a couple of different BAthing Ape line products.. I saw a woman with a bag that said"Ape Shall Not Kill Ape".... It had a chimp on it I think.. I may have a pic of it.. There was a store in Soho( I live in NYC) that was selling all this ape clothing. I went on a "HUNT" looking for it but never found it.. I even asked people in other shops and they looked at me like I was from another  Planet......

These are everywhere in Australia !

The BABY MILO range is now affordable (I'm guessing they are pirate versions of the Baby Milo range) and my kids are actually wearing POTA T Shirts and jackets!

It's very cool.

Do you see many in the US ?

Michael

BAPE product lines are so limited they're
like those special edition sneakers that
only collectors ever find.  If you find it
on the Net or in a store that isn't in
Tokyo, it's probably a fake.

I believe they were based out of Kanab
because that was the closest town and
it had a motel.  I believe at the time it
was basically a highway crossing with
a stop light and a gas station and that's it.

Once again, Fox has enlisted top drawer talent for their sci-fi offerings. They've got Robert Rodriguez to produce a new "Predator", they've got Ridley Scott in his first sci-fi outing in almost 30 years producing (directing?) a prequel to his classic "Alien", and now it's been announced that David Cronenberg is going to write (direct?) a new version of "The Fly". His 1986 remake of that famed story didn't bug me, it's one of my favorite movies.
Again I ask, what does this mean for Fox's suspiciously silent "Apes" redo? Are we about to hear of the involvement of a big name? Clint Eastwood's "Planet of the Apes", with Hillary Swank as Nova and Morgan Freeman as Dr. Zauis?

The first time I ever saw the original POTA in a theater was in 1990 on a double bill with Cronie's "Fly". Maybe my 2 favorite science-fiction movies, plus they have inverted release dates: 1968 and 1986.

This is one of the stupidest things I've read in a long while!
Cronenberg must simply need the money (He's now pretty much a hack) and
Fox is simply desperate -- desperate! This is pathetic. This is like
having Kubrick come back from the grave and declare he must remake 2001
because the first one now needs CGI.

Folks, I think movies as an art form are dead, and we now live in a
world where the Swiss -- the Swiss?!!!! -- arrest Roman Polanski.
Little did I know when I woke up this morning that I was in the
Twilight Zone.

"Once again, Fox has enlisted top drawer talent for their sci-fi
offerings. They've got Robert Rodriguez to produce a new "Predator",
they've got Ridley Scott in his first sci-fi outing in almost 30 years
producing (directing?) a prequel to his classic "Alien", and now it's
been announced that David Cronenberg is going to write (direct?) a new
version of "The Fly". His 1986 remake of that famed story didn't bug
me, it's one of my favorite movies."

I've been holding out on geting the 40th Anniversary Blue Ray set for

that it's free shipping. Not sure if the free shipping applies to US

FYI, Amazon runs their different country operations as separate

since Varese Sarabande released the complete score to PLANET on CD.
Since then there's been technology that can make those old recordings
sound even better. I was hoping there'd be a 40th anniversary

booklet with a better text, fewer flopped pictures, and an original

The Varese Sarabande soundtrack club releases are all limited edition, and are pretty much aimed at the movie music fan market. This one is limited to 3000 copies. If it sells out, which is a likely eventuality (might happen today, might not happen for a few years), copies on the used market will begin rising in price.

The Intrada CD of the television show music, and Film Score Monthly's CD releases of Beneath and Conquest/Battle were similarly limited editions, if you want to compare how they sold. :) (Incidentally, FSM recently reported only 540 copies remain of the 3000 copies of Conquest/Battle. Beneath is sold out/out of print, as is the television score CD.)

Good question. I've had a Dell XPS with a blue ray player for over a
year but have yet to watch a BR on it.

But I'm also at the point where I'm shopping for a big new TV/HT and
BR player. I initially said that I would purchase an OPPO BR player.
But with the recent price drop of PS3's to ~$300 (CDN), I'm now
considering that as option. I know it won't be as good as the OPPO,
but damn, I get the PS3 gaming and other benefits as well.

Read it and weep.  They will not wrong a right that occurred.  What
type of quality control do they have?  I purchased this to support a
new ape product.  I believed in Hot Toys.  Now, I am just bitterly
disappointed.  Fellow apes, be wary of buying Hot Toys products, when
they cannot honor the standards that you expect.  I will no longer
support any future ape line from Hot Toys.

That’s the trap eh?

You can’t just get a BR player – you need to get a TV too.

I nearly got a STANDARD definition PLASMA too and that would have been a mistake!

Make sure you get a true HD screen.

It’s an investment but when you see the difference you’ll never regret a cent you spend.

I'm not going cheap. I'm looking to buy a high end, 55in (or more) unit.
Looking at $5k+ for the TV alone, not to mention the HT sound system,
and the BR of course. This is the carrot at the end of the stick
scenario as I worked on finishing my basement for over 2 years. Did
everything from A-Z myself. So the bundle of $$$ I saved not contracting
it out I can now plunk on my 'dream' Home Theater setup.

And I also get another room to display all that POTA stuff I've
collected over the years. Nothing as complete as Tim's room and all the
other fancy POTA rooms some of you others have, but it'll be a nice one
nonetheless. I'll also have a hobby corner setup so that I can finally
get to work on assembling those Ape scale models.

But I'm getting ahead of myself as there is not an iota of furniture in
any of the rooms now. It's tough even finding time to shop for any of
this stuff. If I'm lucky I'll have most of it all bought by the time the
holidays roll around.

I like to interpret it that way - to give it a valuable reason for happening
- but really I think it was sloppiness.

I think you have Dehn, the scriptwriters and the Directors all having their
own versions of whether it's an eternal repetitive loop that will never
change at all or not, and I think even they knew the best way to keep having
room for sequels is to never make that final decision!

Even Dehn's quote "it's all like a big circle" can be interpreted more ways
than one.

Oh boy I can see people running to their rooms and locking their computers
to avoid more timelines conversations, but if there's really 600+ POTA fans
on the POTA group I'd love to hear their comments! ;)

Has anyone noticed how the location change between the films actual adds to
Virgil's 'multi-lane highway' theory aka our 'altered future' theory? The
first two films are in New York, and the later ones are in LA...and so's the
bomb. I can't see the mutants carting it all the way accross the country to
the other coast. I think it points to a different future, whether or not the
situation is the same, with mute humans and dominant apes, or human/ape
peace or whatever.

The Mayan's believe that history always repeats itself (you know, those 2012 dudes).
So I like the circular timelime of Planet of the Apes.

Starting next week I'm playing every lottery number that ever came out in history.
So if the Mayan's are correct, I should be hitting the lottery any year now. I just hope it's before 2012. :o)

the bomb across the US.

I wish someone would come out with a complete box set of the APE soundtracks - including the Animated Series - as was done for the SUPERMAN films.
(Hint)
I was given a cassette of the original scoring session for the animated series years ago from the show's creator and although MONO the sound is very nice.  I don't know why it hasn't been approached.

Beneath is sold out/out of print, as is the television score CD.)

since Varese Sarabande released the complete score to PLANET on CD.
Since then there's been technology that can make those old recordings
sound even better. I was hoping there'd be a 40th anniversary
re-release of the original score with such an improvement (and a new
booklet with a better text, fewer flopped pictures, and an original
American poster cover!). Maybe if this sells well, Varese will
consider it.

Unfortunately the location of Conquest & Battle has been the source of much debate and confusion over the years. In Conquest the flimmakers made it a generic 'city of the future' most likely to give themselves more flexibility for future sequels. Because of this many assumed that since Escape took place on the West Coast, Conquest did as well. Although I always thought using that line of thinking it would be more logical to assume Conquest took place in Florida since that's where Armando's Circus was headed at the end of Escape. The TV series taking place on the West Coast further reinforced this impression.

However, according to the writers, they didn't switch coasts, at least not for Conquest and Battle. While there is nothing in either film to indicate the location of events, in the script treatments for Battle the writers say that Caesar's Ape City is the same community that Taylor later discovers. In one version the Apes are shown buiding the Ape City arena where Ursus gave his speech in Beneath. So according to the writers Battle (and therefore Conquest) take place on the East Coast.

Mmmm, you're right Rory.  I friend of mine adopted one of those orphaned Chinese kids - after 2 years of paper work, and them sending pics during the last year of the kid she was going to get, not to mention 30,000.00 dollars she got a kid that couldn't even stand and needed an eye operation.  Seems they actually strapped the kid to fence for the pics sent to make her look like she could stand up.
The conditions in the orphan house had 2 babies to a crib.
After coming to terms with the child she still feels it's better in her arms than left to survive in China.
... of course being a girl child she would have been treated even worse there.
I'm not kidding about any of this.
But it does put things in perspective when one makes a $100 + purchase for a stupid doll.  It's amazing how different, lucky, and what's important to us here in this country.  I'm not a bleeding heart, nor a liberal, but the comparisons are interesting all the same.
In the end, I agree with Jess - I'd be mad as hell too!

Can't that be easily fixed with one of those vinyl repair kits and a
hot iron?

You can't expect little Chinese children working for a dollar a day to
get each and every one of those things right, can you?

Jessica, please rethink this and help support the poor little Chinese
children working their fingers to the bone so we can have our plastic

type of quality control do they have?  I purchased this to support a
new ape product.  I believed in Hot Toys.  Now, I am just bitterly
disappointed.  Fellow apes, be wary of buying Hot Toys products, when
they cannot honor the standards that you expect.  I will no longer

I never really bought that. A nuclear missle would weigh a couple of tons at least. Not an easy thing for a bunch of sickly Mutants to be dragging over 3,000 miles. I've always believed that Marvel did that in order to shoehorn their 'Terror' series (with the Mutant brains in jars) in to the chronology of the films.

Precisely my point about the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing – as we all see the final result is nothing like this (and the mere constraint of budget is probably the actual reason – not any creative differences).

I would be surprised if more than a handful of people – even die hard POTA fans - (other than Rory obviously) would sit back, relax, grab a beer and put on a Planet of the Apes soundtrack more than maybe once or twice.

The replies and responses I have received back what I say – that most people would put on a Beatles track or some Led Zep, Black Sabbath or even Kylie Minogue WELL before they would put on a POTA soundtrack.

So really, not a terribly odd comment.  And how you could logically follow calling my comment odd (of course, not offensively!) with asking have I never listened to music before (was that sarcasm or in your world are there people who have never listened to music before?) is beyond me – unless you were just stirring the pot (which I suspect).

Did I offend you?

Yes Bill I agree - when I want to get "in the zone" I do play the
soundtrack.when I'm writing a comic script.

I also try to write watching the movies whenever I can.

But relaxing and swilling brewskies..nah!

I myself love to listen to POTA soundtracks when doing work around the
house-drawing <I am a graphic artist by trade> or writing scripts for my
audio dramas- fantastic music!

But I understand what you are saying- just my own opinion here on the music.

My thoughts on film scores:

Personally, I love classical music.
And the best classical music can always be found on movie soundtracks.

Outside of Apes I love...

"Anvil of Crom" Conan the Barbarian Theme

And "The Dream" Total Recall Theme. The one and only Jerry Goldsmith!

Play it loud and proud! :o)

I think the PS3 is a good way to go. My sister has one and Blu-rays on
it look great, but I had to do the set-up for it and that wasn't fun.

Of course, all of this means nothing if you don't have a plasma or LCD
TV that's 1080p, though 1080i is nearly as good.

OK I think that everyone has had their say here and would ask everyone involved to take a step back and a breath before replying further. And remember as the Group Guidelines state, "Please be courteous and respectful of other members. While discussion and differences of opinion are natural, please keep all such discussions friendly without name-calling or attacking someone for holding a different opinion." Or an easier way to say it is to debate the issue not the person.

Now we all have different tastes in music, film, literature, etc.; but we all share a common bond here, the love of POTA. So let's all remember that. They release of Escape's soundtrack is a good thing for POTA fans, not something we should be bickering about.

Thanks.

But I'm getting ahead of myself as there is not an iota of furniture in

That's so true, Rory. When I listen to any of the apes soundtracks, I DO remember bits of the movie!! And you're right...it IS the next best thing to watching the movie. Sometimes when I craft, I just have the movie playing in the background and I just listen to the music so I can get inspired and in the mood.

I think a certain Aussie dude is a little ignorant of just how many
fans there are of the composers of these scores. The Jerry Goldsmith
fans are hundreds of thousands (maybe more) and I'll bet you this
ESCAPE CD sells well.

By the way, the original LP of PLANET was NEVER out of press until the
company finally stopped pressing LPs, and it then went to cassette,
then CD. There are several CD editions of Goldsmith's original alone,
and selections from the score are now often played at concerts around
the world!

I hope
"alot" of humans buy this. You know, it's been twelve years

since Varese Sarabande released the complete score to PLANET on CD.

When POTA first hit theaters a large part of the success was because
nobody had seen anything like it in terms of costume and makeup. It
was ground breaking realism as much as it was a good story. And the
third component of that success was the sound score. People forget
that it too was like nothing that had come before it (well as a movie
score anyway). Some people don't appreciate that it won the academy
award for score that year and what an achievement that was.

As a kid, the emphasis for me was the 'look' of the movie. But as I
got older, I quickly learned to appreciate the score just as much.

Yeah I know you have Rory – how many others do the same is my question (and my confirmed suspicion is “not many”).

I am not belittling you for this, or anyone, just asking a question.

The responses have been overall that MOST people would rarely listen to the soundtrack and – particularly now they have the Blu-Ray – they would much rather watch the movie.

The other relevant, interesting thing that’s developed is that “a lot” (sic) of people also do POTA related creative stuff listening to the CDs.

Then of course there’s one guy trying to make it all personal but I’m not even sure he’s a real person so…you know….whatever!

Are you talking about the original Jerry Goldsmith score to PLANET?

I've been listening to that score since I was eight years old. I've
listened to it hundreds of times and can listen to it almost anytime.
I don't play it as often as I used to, but every few months I put it
on. Next best thing to watching the movie.

I think a certain Aussie dude is a little ignorant of just how many
fans there are of the composers of these scores. The Jerry Goldsmith
fans are hundreds of thousands (maybe more) and I'll bet you this
ESCAPE CD sells well.

By the way, the original LP of PLANET was NEVER out of press until the
company finally stopped pressing LPs, and it then went to cassette,
then CD. There are several CD editions of Goldsmith's original alone,
and selections from the score are now often played at concerts around
the world!

So, to you down under I have only one thing to say......

I hope
"alot" of humans buy this. You know, it's been twelve years

since Varese Sarabande released the complete score to PLANET on CD.

To be honest, I prefer Elfman's POTA2001 score as a listening experience. I like to imagine a better movie! The others I'd rather just hear when I watch the movies.

Hi Neil...

The film music fan community is huge (POTA fandom is small in comparison).
Naturally, everyone has their own favorite scores and composers, but
Goldsmith is one of the upper echelon of composers. I doubt any POTA fan
would disagree with that! But these next few facts may surprise you, and
will probably be disbelieved entirely by someone else on this list.

The Intrada label, who released the POTA television soundtrack, have in the
past year released other Jerry Goldsmith scores, three of which I will share
as examples.

On 22 September 2008, they released Jerry Goldsmith's THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL.
It was a 2-CD set priced at $29.99, and limited to 5,000 copies (not the
usual 3,000). The title sold out completely in exactly 10 months, all 5,000
copies. That's somewhat impressive, considering it was an expensive 2-CD
set, but notably, the first 3,000 copies sold in about 24 hours.

On 14 April 2009, they released Jerry Goldsmith's ONE LITTLE INDIAN. ("What
movie's that?" I hear most of you say. Which is part of my point...) One
disc, $19.99, limited to 3,000 copies. In three days, there were 300 copies
remaining. The title sold out completely in 9 days.

And the best for last.
On 9 April 2008, they released Jerry Goldsmith's BABY: SECRET OF THE LOST
LEGEND. One disc, $19.99, limited to 3,000 copies. This one was completely
sold out in under 24 hours. And you'd better believe this movie is nowhere
near as popular as PLANET OF THE APES, or probably even ESCAPE FROM THE
PLANET OF THE APES!

I hope these examples might open your eyes to the unpredictable and often
surprising market of limited edition film score CDs. And Intrada's not the
only label that release these... Varese Sarabande, of course, is another,
and there's Film Score Monthly (FSM), Kritzerland, and La-La Land, too.
Importantly, these labels are direct marketers, their CDs were only rarely
sold in stores or other online retailers outside the soundtrack specialty
retailers.

It's impossible to predict how fast ESCAPE will sell out. Some Varese
Sarabande club titles have easily sold out even before their shipping dates,
while others are still available now, long after their release. They might
announce that ESCAPE is sold out tomorrow, or next week, or next month, or
not until 2012. Who knows. Sales will most likely be negatively affected by
the ESCAPE suite that appeared on Varese's POTA soundtrack, as well as
ESCAPE bootlegs that have been available, and of course the isolated score
on the Blu-ray disc, so I'm going to guess it won't sell out that quickly,
but then again I've just demonstrated how unpredictable the market can be!

How long did it take for the past releases to sell out (and have they all)?
At 3000 copies each and with all those Goldsmith / soundtrack etc. fans out
there you would think they would have been snapped up almost immediately
wouldn't they?

Hello S,

I'm one of those that bought the BOYS FROM BRAZIL CD. I've also
recently bought Goldsmith's scores to IN HARM'S WAY, TWILIGHT ZONE --
THE MOVIE, and LONELY ARE THE BRAVE. DIDn't get INDIAN or BABY though.

Over at the Film Score Monthly website there's a blog where people are
complaining that the ESCAPE CD, with only about 30 minutes of music,
should be priced less than $19.95. I agree, but I've ordered it
anyway. I think Varese should have limited this to a 1000, but I'll
bet they figured it would only be bootlegged anyway.

Hi Neil...

The film music fan community is huge (POTA fandom is small in
comparison).

Naturally, everyone has their own favorite scores and composers, but

Goldsmith is one of the upper echelon of composers. I doubt any POTA fan

would disagree with that! But these next few facts may surprise you, and

will probably be disbelieved entirely by someone else on this list.

The Intrada label, who released the POTA television soundtrack, have in
the

past year released other Jerry Goldsmith scores, three of which I will
share

as examples.

On 22 September 2008, they released Jerry Goldsmith'
s THE BOYS FROM
BRAZIL.

It was a 2-CD set priced at $29.99, and limited to 5,000 copies (not the

usual 3,000). The title sold out completely in exactly 10 months, all
5,000

In three days, there were 300
copies

remaining. The title sold out completely in 9 days.

And the best for last.

On 9 April 2008, they released Jerry Goldsmith's BABY: SECRET OF THE
LOST

LEGEND. One disc, $19.99, limited to 3,000 copies. This one was
completely

sold out in under 24 hours. And you'd better believe this movie is
nowhere

near as popular as PLANET OF THE APES, or probably even ESCAPE FROM THE

PLANET OF THE APES!

I hope these examples might open your eyes to the unpredictable and

surprising market of limited edition film score CDs. And Intrada's not

another,

and there's Film Score Monthly (FSM), Kritzerland, and La-La Land, too.

sold in stores=2
0or other online retailers outside the soundtrack
specialty

retailers.

while others are still available now, long after their release. They

but then again I've just demonstrated how unpredictable the market can

I listen to the Apes scores a lot---whether in the car on long journeys or in the background as mood music in work. The Apes scores have a life all their own and the series, including the tv series, incidentally, was just blessed with the very, very best composers in the industry. There are bits in the scores that really repay being listened to in isolation and if you compare Apes 1968 to Apes 2001 you have, in a microcosm, an example of why society is declining.John, Scrolls.
