That's what I've been saying. It's a reboot with
the possibility of redoing the original down the road. Just as Jack Nicholson
and Heath Ledger played different Jokers, this would be a different Taylor (my
estimate is that New Taylor takes off in 2018; but get rid of that Icarus name
for the ship).
Pretty good script, if a little rough. I think
the writers, director and actors will hopefully finesse it (Lithgow said they're
receiving rewritten pages on set). So it might change significantly from this
Jan. 2010 draft. I think they've rejigged the romance to make it stronger
(judging from the photos we've seen). And the owner of the "Ape Ranch" and his
son (Brian Cox and Tom Felton) aren't in this. So they were added,
maybe removing "Dodge" and "Landon". Basically this script was before the
director arrived, so mucho changes could happen. There is a lot of ape action in
this script. I think they will probably cut some to give the CG folks a break.
The script could be streamlined a bit and the more interesting aspects developed
further (too much "Project X", not enough character development).
It's cool that the lead gorilla (and Caesar's
lieutenant!) is named after Buck Kartalian (Julius). He'll enjoy that. Too bad
"Buck" doesn't say, "Human see, human do", the line Buck improvised in the
original.
Overall, I think fans will dig this, and the
writers seem very knowledgeable about ape lore (including the first word spoken
by an ape, though not Aldo). This doesn't work as a prequel to the original but
it's very respectful to the past films, without parroting lines (though "damn
dirty ape" gets in there, but works). I'm impressed.

Interesting, if it is the real script then it is not
a prequel, at least to the original.
On page 39 of the script there is a TV news report
about Taylor and his crew preparing to be launched. So since this film takes
place in contemporary times, it can't be the same Taylor from the original film
who was launched in 1972. Thus it's not a prequel but a
reboot. <.html <.html

.htmlFirst, FOX has never called the film a prequel. It has been dubbed a prequel by internet bloggers.
Second, how can it be a prequel if the characters are different. Using the Star Wars films as an example, the Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy is the exact same character as the Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original films. Same is true of the characters of Yoda, Jabba the Hut and Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. However, the characters of Landon, Dodge and Stewart featured in Rise are not the same characters as those in the original Planet. Even the George Taylor mention in Rise has to be a different Taylor than the one in Planet because his mission leaves in the 21st century not in 1972.
This film is a reboot of the POTA franchise like Batman Begins and Casino Royale were reboots of those franchises. And like those reboot films, Rise is an origin story but that doesn't automatically make it a direct prequel to the 1968 film any more that Batman Begins is a prequel to the Adam West Batman or Casino Royale is a prequel to Dr. No.
Overall I think Rich Handley summed it up best a few months ago:
--- In pota@yahoogroups.com, "rassmguy" <handleyr@...> wrote:
> > In any case, what appears to be happening here is that the film will uses names from the original film as homages--not as direct tie-ins. --- In pota@yahoogroups.com, scott bosco <digitalcinema@...> wrote: > > That doesn't mean it not a prequel - they might be just half-assed trying to make it work. They seems to be using info related items but going with different dates. You see they think no one would notice. This is typical of bad writing that is considered good these days. Having the film simply take place in the late 60 early 70's would have solved this probelm - but would have added to the budget, so they just flew with it and are patting themselves on the back say, "look how clever we are!" > Typical. > - Scott B. >

> Pretty good script, if a little rough. I think the writers, director and actors will hopefully finesse it (Lithgow said they're receiving rewritten pages on set). So it might change significantly from this Jan. 2010 draft. I think they've rejigged the romance to make it stronger (judging from the photos we've seen). And the owner of the "Ape Ranch" and his son (Brian Cox and Tom Felton) aren't in this. So they were added, maybe removing "Dodge" and "Landon". Basically this script was before the director arrived, so mucho changes could happen. There is a lot of ape action in this script. I think they will probably cut some to give the CG folks a break. The script could be streamlined a bit and the more interesting aspects developed further (too much "Project X", not enough character development).

Too bad "Buck" doesn't say, "Human see, human do", the line Buck improvised in the original. > Overall, I think fans will dig this, and the writers seem very knowledgeable about ape lore (including the first word spoken by an ape, though not Aldo). This doesn't work as a prequel to the original but it's very respectful to the past films, without parroting lines (though "damn dirty ape" gets in there, but works). I'm impressed. > >

You're amazing, Al. First you're obsessed with getting a projector to watch APES as big as you can, now you're happy to watch APES on a screen the size of your palm!
Personally, I don't get how anyone can want to watch a tiny little screen. They just don't hold my attention.

Actually that's what I'm saying. The new film is a complete reboot that inhabits a different POTA universe than the original films.
Films are things of their time, so movies made more than forty years apart are of course going to be of "different universes" -- the definition of which is subjective. But these movies are related. They explore the same concept. If there's a Taylor somewhere in this new movie, even if it's just a mention of him, there's still a Taylor, an astronaut, who will, I suppose -- because I have no interest in reading this script -- get "lost in space" and some two thousand years in the future crashland of a planet of the apes and discover it's earth all along -- AND, if you want to see that story, WATCH THE 1968 CLASSIC FOX FILM!
I don't see Fox ever remaking, literally, the '68 film. This new movie is probably the first part of a trilogy (depending on whether or not it's successful critically and financially) that will explore the origins of the world Fox first introduced you to in the 1968 classic SF film. That does not mean that strict "continuity" has to be maintained in order for this new movie to be of the same general universe of the original films -- not for me anyway. I don't take this stuff so literally, don't look at each film as just parts of a greater "saga" where every chapter (i.e. independent film) must be strictly loyal to every detail of the other films. That's certainly not true of the original series. The inconsistencies of the original five films we are all very aware of. Some of you twist things into pretzels to try and make it all fit into one long story, but I've always choose to
look at each film as separate unto itself. I think that's a better way to enjoy them and not let little mistakes in the scripts drive you nuts.
I could seriously argue that BENEATH is a "reboot" of PLANET since BENEATH takes place in a future 3955 AD, and PLANET took place in a future 3978 AD, and there are further inconsistencies between PLANET and its first sequel that would back up this argument, but it ultimately is pointless. The reality is that they are two separate films.
Another thing I don't do is watch ESCAPE and see it now as a story that takes place nearly forty years ago. On one level I know it takes place in 1973 -- it says so--, but it still "feels" like a contemporary story that takes place just slightly in the future. CONQUEST is also a story that I look at as still taking place in some future -- even if it still says 1991 at the beginning of the film --, and BATTLE too. To watch now the last three films in the original series and think of them as taking place in the past is something I don't think the filmmakers intended, and really shouldn't have dated the movies by giving them literal dates in time.
I would say the the latest STAR TREK movie took place and the same universe as everything that's STAR TREK from the past, only it was done on a different timeline where some things were altered, but it's still the same STAR TREK.

Shouldn't that be accept?
Yes, it should.
And I wish Fox would get around to telling everyone exactly what this new movie is supposed to be. I know it's a reboot, but my bet is that Fox will also have you see it as a loose prequel to the original film... in this sense -- the story eventually leads to a future earth first "explored" in the 1968 Fox motion picture.

.html.html here's a transcript: That's next, but first get out your pitchfork and torches, time for tonight's Worst Persons in the World.
The bronze to the media relations officer at the Katawa County
Sheriffs Office in Mauldan (ph), West Virginia. , A man named Eddie M.
Campbell of Bell, West Virginia, was arrested a little before 9:00 am
yesterday morning in a park, near a church, with his shirt off and his
pants around his ankles, and a mannequin on his lap. An armless
mannequin, pants on the ground.
Mr. Campbell allegedly told the deputy he was, quote, "just trying
to have a little fun." The Katawa County Sheriff's Office issued this
cutesy statement: "they have yet to interview mannequin, so they are
unsure if it was picked up off the street or the two met for a date in
the park. However, the mannequin is now being held as evidence.
It is bad enough that Mr. Campbell was jerking around in the park.
Nobody needs the sheriff's office doing the same thing.
The runner up is Lonesome Rhodes beck. The racism is almost
standard now. It is the self-whitewashing park that is the news hear.
This is what he said on August 5th, another part of the Mountain Dew and
Cheetos proxism.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
GLENN BACK, FOX NEWS ANCHOR: What planet have I landed in? Did I
slip through a worm hole in the middle of the night and this looks like
America? It is like the damn "Planet of the Apes." Nothing makes
sense.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
OLBERMANN: Right. During one of those diatribes against the
president, he asked the rhetorical question, this looks like America and
referenced "Planet of the Apes." No racism there.
When it came time to transform his spiel into a piece for the Fox
News website, we instead got, quote, "what planet have I landed on? On
what planet does this look sustainable? Probably the same one where
Andy Stern is on the financial oversight committee. He was in "Return
to the Planet Of the Apes," right? Or underneath the planet. "Is this
really who we want to cater to and take advice from? They're the ones
who are bankrupting us."
Even Fixed News felt it needed to clean up something Beck said. But
since nobody can control him over there, don't worry, they won't try to
stop him from saying that on television.
But our winners, Liz and Dick Cheney. Again, this pretty much speaks for itself.

Why revisit Batman meeting the Joker for the
first time? Because it made $ 1 billion. More to the point perhaps is fans WANT
the new "Star Trek" filmmakers to revisit Khan, and "The Wrath of Khan" is
generally considered the best "Trek" movie. It depends if it's a good filmmaker
like J. J. Abrams or Christopher Nolan, then people want to see what they can do
with new technology on an old story. That doesn't mean a note for note remake of
the original, but maybe a riff using the same characters. Anyway, that's what I
get from them introducing "George Taylor" into the new film.
Maybe the director will drop Taylor. Or maybe the
film will flop and it will just be an amusing reference to the original with no
sequels. Or maybe it really is a prequel (and dates be damned). But considering
the way reboots are these days, especially post-"Star Trek", I think they are
considering retelling the George Taylor story down the road, maybe with a new
Zauis, Cornelius and Zira.
And for the record there are a number of "Wizard
of Oz" movies in the works, including a prequel.

I just do not get the fascination with microscoptic film viewing and lossy audio. Its amazing but unless its job oriented I think your money would be better spent on updating and tweaking your home theater(a better screen). I know, my family has these "smart phones" all over the place and I encourage my 2 year old grandaughter to keep playing with whoevers phone she gets a hold of. I just like the best audio/video that is possible and when the technology is here I get impatient that its not fully put to good use or we are told that it is and it clearly is not...the blu-ray of Planet of the Apes is substandard in audio and video. Most people play with these tiny things so any image larger that a wallet looks great to them. I shouldnt care they will probably be remastered again next year. Sorry for going on but Apes will always be a pet peeve with me since arguing with Fox as far back as 1978...John M.. <.html

So two or three weeks ago I see that Encore Westerns is showing something called THE HONKERS from 1972 starring James Coburn. I've never seen it (It's one of three rodeo pictures released in '72, this one shot in a small New Mexico town in late summer, 1971) and I like James Coburn, so I record it on my DVR.
Watching it, there comes a shot of Coburn pulling up in front of a movie theatre, his character looking for a girlfriend that works there, with the 1971 film THE HUNTING PARTY on the marquee... but I spotted something else. Can you see it in this screen grab?

I use 99% to clean the heads on the tape deck. I got it at Tom Thumb, but
it says Safeway on it. No more Safeway's here. I never sealed mine, though
it probably would have made getting it out easier. That's the real bitch
with the thin edges and all. I didn't drill sprue holes either. I
just let it overflow. I didn't have any sort of foam injector.
Just poured from the bowl. The worry there's bubbles. I baked it
with the lifemask face down in the mold -- since any bubbles are likely to rise,
and the outside shows, that's what counts. A little patience goes a long way
when taking it out. Since mine wasn't sealed the nose wanted to stick
and the bridge of it wanted to rip. I understand Zira's was especially
difficult since it's even thinner. The reject I was sent has a bubble that
caused a loss of part of the lower lip, but it also had a sort of stocking like
lining to it. Not sure if it's the same as the special precaution Chambers
took, or Apemania's version of that. I tried to resculpt the missing
lower lip in wax, but never made a cast of it since resources were
limited. Here's pics of my attempt at sculpting and of the recasts of
Apemania's Cornelius and Gorilla.

It's just like following a recipe.
It's all measures & timing. If
you can bake it should be fine.
Just remember to pour any left
over on a paper plate or foil or
something. Then you can gage
it by pushing it in with your finger.

.htmlT, that looks really great! I wish that you had the resources to complete your project. The Apemania Zira appliances I have purchased have never had any kind of webbing or stocking like lining. I don't have an injector gun but I have seen the DIY foam injector gun with final cost about $35/$40...A Burman one would cost $70. I'm going to just spoon the foam in carefully. I keep reading/re-reading the instructions and whatever I can glean off the internet, hoping something will sink in.
I'm getting excited and can't contain myself only because tomorrow is the day I get to go ape. I have been dreaming about baking foam latex (true!) and waking up thinking about the steps I need to prep myself tomorrow. My problem is that I am a night owl and mornings suck for me...so I have to be especially prudent and try to get to bed at a decent time so that I can wake up refreshed and start early. My other problem is that I am so excited it's hard to get to sleep. So sad.
Jess.

I use 99% to clean the heads on the tape deck. I got it at Tom Thumb, but it says Safeway on it. No more Safeway's here. I never sealed mine, though it probably would have made getting it out easier. That's the real bitch with the thin edges and all. I didn't drill sprue holes either. I just let it overflow. I didn't have any sort of foam injector. Just poured from the bowl. The worry there's bubbles. I baked it with the lifemask face down in the mold -- since any bubbles are likely to rise, and the outside shows, that's what counts. A little patience goes a long way when taking it out. Since mine wasn't sealed the nose wanted to stick and the bridge of it wanted to rip. I understand Zira's was especially difficult since it's even thinner. The reject I was sent has a bubble that caused a loss of part of the lower lip, but it also had a sort of stocking like lining to it. Not sure if it's the same as the special
precaution Chambers took, or Apemania's version of that. I tried to resculpt the missing lower lip in wax, but never made a cast of it since resources were limited. Here's pics of my attempt at sculpting and of the recasts of Apemania's Cornelius and Gorilla.

Well, they showed a projected Blu-ray of ESCAPE at the Egyptian Theatre in LA and Veetus said it looked OK! They also later showed THE SAND PEBBLES the same way at the Egyptian and the guy who runs TheSandPebbles.com was there and also said it looked great.
Personally, I've never seen a Blu-ray projected. Now, it could be that the Egyptian had these movies on a hard drive at 4K, but I don't know.

I was there for the Escape From the POTA showing at the Egyptian.
Both my wife and I thought it looked great. Very clear, very sharp, very

That's why I highly recommend projectors. I of course don't have the luxury of a 50 foot wide screen but a 7 foot wide screen
looks just as great. Maybe someday when I hit the lottery and buy a bigger house I'll put a 50 foot wide screen in the livingroom, but for now,
7 looks just as great. :o)
Again I highly recommend it.

To be humble the last time I saw a bluray 1080p projection was about a year ago and things are constantly improving so I must stop rushing to judgment. If its the bluray and it really looks good on a 50ft screen then wow! we can all do it then. John M.

I just got back from a lengthy vacation in Florida. While I was there, I logged into my e-mail account on my inlaws' computer and saw that I had a lot of incoming mail. Somehow, all of it was deleted and is unavailable to me on my home computer. Optonline.net has no backup of the messages, and I don't recall what most of the e-mails were about since (being on vacation and on someone else's computer at the time) I just glanced through them quickly. {{{sigh}}} So if any of you e-mailed me something and are awaiting a response but I haven't responded, my apologies--please feel free to resend it to me and I'll get back to you.

If Fox doesn't want to spend the dough for one of
the big boys, how about this dude to do the ROTA music? He's done acclaimed
sci-fi music, but for TV. His credits include the reboot of "Battlestar
Galactica", the "Terminator" TV show, "Human Target" (which co-stars Jackie
Earle (Kraik) Haley) and the "Galactica" spinoff, "Caprica". His first feature
credit was just released, "Step Up 3D", and it seems the next step (up) would be
to take his sci-fi scoring experience to the big screen, as Giacchino did going
from TV to "Star Trek".
He's known for using unusual instruments and
techniques to do "inventive" music, much like Goldsmith's "Apes" score is
remembered for.
This track sounds Ape-like to me:
Here's his "Galactica"-ized version of "All Along
the Watchtower":
"Terminator", machine-tinged but
emotional:
His rockin' "Terminator" flavored gospel
tune:
He'd get my vote if Ringo Starr is
busy.

Okay, I went ahead and took a few photos of Beneath on my projection screen.
PHOTO1: My projectors.
The one up top is a LG LED projector I use for television. Runs at about 30,000 hours and will last about 7 or 8 years running at 10 hours a day.
Retail price: $499
The one on the bottom is my Optoma HD65 projector that runs on a light bulb that lasts from 4,000 to 5,000 hours (I only use this for blu-ray and DVD movies) Comes with a 3 year warrenty that covers the light bulb as well. Retail price: $799
PHOTO2: The projection screen.
At the time of taking the picture, Star Wars was playing on television. :o) But to give you a scale, the HD TV is a 40 inch.
PHOTOS 3 - 9: Snap shots of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" running on my HD65 Optoma.
So pretty much, this is what a bluray looks like on a projector screen. Again, my digital camera isn't the greatest but at least you get the idea.

> Your machine is a great machine for the money. I would get a gray screen, that would really improve your picture even more. Beleive me a video or audio signal can always be improved. And for not much dollars. That would make the optima shine. As you know its a 720 machine so it will lack alittle but mayby not to most peoples eyes. I agree that its a fine unit with alot of fine tune parameters, but the market would not be loaded with mega-buck projectors if they did not sell. If you had seen properly set up units in high end stores you would realize what I mean. If you honestly cant tell the difference then your blind or blessed (LOL).. Im always on the lookout for the next big improvement. My 50inch cost a few thousand dollars and nothing outside of a five thousand dollar unit can touch it. Calibration is a big deal and if you
were to calibrate the optima it would get you about another 40% closer to greatness. The optima is flexible so it should respond well. I only tell you this because your happy with it and for a little more investment(screen and calibration) you will indeed be near nirvana. Take care John M... <.html

I must say that detail(is your gamma control high) looks good(but like I said cannot tell from computer photos) but the gray scale looks off(again computer photos), the end of Planet has a cool(blueish tint)that it doesnt have and Beneath is a tough one because the ending is blueish.
