Blu-ray.com has a review up too. It doesn't come out until this Tuesday. I can't wait to give it a look.

DVD Beaver has a review of one of Franklin Schaffner's best remembered film (I hear he also dabbled in science fiction). Rupert Wyatt, the director of "Rise of the POTA" is also known for a prison escape movie, "The Escapist", and in fact when asked to name his favorite prison escape movie on an "Escapist" DVD extra, he said "Papillon".

On the 40th Anniversary of ESCAPE there's this important announcement....
I don't know if it's true (but it probably is), but someone posted on the Film Score Monthly message board that Varese Sarabande only has 100 copies left of their ESCAPE original soundtrack CD left.
So, if you haven't ordered yours yet, you better do it now.
And if you have, you may want to consider getting another as a future investment. Why not?

.htmlAs you probably know the TV soundtrack sold out fast and now commands prices up to 250 bucks, crazy. Their seems to be a large fan base for the TV series interesting. Escape for the last few months on some web sites was going for almost as much as the TV series. People who knew they were going to sell out I guess tried to boost the price of the CD and cause a panic buying frenzy. At one point the Beneath CD had crazy prices...Take care, John M.

Basically, yes. The hits support the flops. And that
ratio
is several to one and seems to get higher every year. And
a lot a wheels have to be greased in distribution. Which is
why a lot of films are either direct to disc or shelved all together.
It's when a film goes to DVD that the real money is made. Look
at The Big Lebowski. That flopped, but has gone on to be a
classic.
When all is said and done, after everyone who's contract was over
reported and everyone else has been ripped off, there's hardly enough
money on the initial run of even a moderate hit to satiate the
avarice
of average Hollywod Les Grossman types. They want mega
bucks!

Like the T-Shirt says "I may be old but I saw all the cool bands".
I guess you could translate that to I saw all the cool movies on
the big screen. I feel sorry for kids that won't bother with a
movie that's in Black & White. They don't know what they're
missing. But i can only hope that if the new flick rekindles
POTA interest they aren't turned off by Burton's before
they get to the original. That would be a shame.

I've been forgetting to say this, but what matter in terms of the boxoffice RISE will do isn't what opens against it on its opening weekend, but what opens the following weekend and the weekend following that.
For me, it's fairly obvious that RISE will win its opening weekend (The Fox publicity machine will see to that just as it did selling POTA2001 to an unsuspecting public), but if it's going to have legs, there can't be a movie the next week that cuts those legs off.
What's opening on the next two weekends after RISE? I have no idea. I'm sure Krueger will now look this up. Let's examine what he finds and then let's really speculate knowledgeably on what RISE will do -- of course assuming that RISE is a very good movie (because that matters!), which we don't know -- yet.

Yes, generally a TV actor, even if a good, respectable one. He's been in some reasonable films, but never as main lead and hardly as main support. He was fairly good in Dexter, as well as some other stuff (he does a bit of theatre work, to his credit, but that's a different sort of acting), but he's not exactly what I'd call top film material. Thing is, Burton's film had some good and recognised film actors (Roth, Bonham Carter, Warner and Giamatti), but that didn't save it from not fulfilling its potential. Then again, having arguably not so talented or interesting actors doesn't mean that the coming film will be less for it, as there are many other factors to making a good film than how good your actors are or are not (talent helps, though).
Personally, I'm not too bothered by the actors that have been chosen for Rise and any perceived limitations, for I feel that they can, if given the right material, do justice. Good actors are just one ingredient, but there's plenty other things that can spoil the meal. Anyway, even good actors can do a bad job now and then, or can be directed wrongly, good acting edited out, having to follow a bad script, etc.
As for the topic, it does seem a crazy world that sees a profitable film as a loss, despite all the explanations as why that should be seen so.

Yeah, I'd say Fox knew what they were doing moving this back to August. Now, the thing simply has to be better than mediocre, since mediocre seems to be the norm these days, but RISE looks as if it could be the unique movie this summer.
PIRATES made $90 Mill this weekend and has gotten dismal reviews. Let's see how big the drop off is next weekend.

We live in a "representational democracy" not a pure democracy, and our Founding Father, who were the elites of their time -- wealthy land and slave owners -- founded this country in part to make it a better place for capitalism. This country has always been about acquiring wealth, but that's not what's run us nearly into the ground. It's the love of materialism that has. Look at how we're raised from early childhood to want, want, want. If mankind keeps it up, we'll be extinct in a couple hundred years.

"unnecessary". Meanwhile there's 4 comic book movies coming out. I'd say the way
they're doing it, POTA is maybe the most "original" of the big summer movies
(with the possible exception of "Cowboys and Aliens"). If Burton had done the
job right 10 years ago then maybe a new POTA wouldn't be
"necessary".

Is it because he thinks the movie is bad? Or he's afraid to reveal anything secret about the film?
If you ask me, I think the ending we read in the bootleg script wasn't the same ending Fox put down on film.
There's going to some type of major shock ending to this film. I have a funny feeling what it is but I won't say.

"Harry Potter" menace Tom Felton was at the premiere of "Hangover 2" and chatted briefly about "Rise of the POTA" in a video interview. Doesn't mention if Caesar puts him over his knee and teaches him some manners.

Hopefully the ending is better than in that script. It just kind of ended. The new ending is: Caesar walks out of a movie theater showing POTA2001 and falls to his knees screaming, "You MANIACS!!".

.htmlInteresting art.
Davinci-like flying machines? Definitely non-cannon based on Taylor's
attempts at explaining flight to Zira and Cornelius unless the story
goes on to describe how apes begin to explore flight theory there and then.
The oversized canine teeth on the Gorillas isn't exactly accurate, but I
kinda like them for the menacing effect.
Looks like an Ape chimp lies dead that could figure prominently in the
story along with the chemical mixing Ourang. And we'll have a blonde
human that may have survived the trip this time.
I really like the vibrancy of the Steranko art (cannon or not!).
Does anyone know if this will be available via Diamond distributing as a
normal comic and that can be ordered like a comic in comic shops? I hope so.

I think Rise will do better than that projection--I'm hoping that it will be a bit like X-Men, a fairly modest, thoughtful first episode with bigger things to follow--but without a totally crap third film, obviously! .htmlBox Office Mojo has their projected list of the top movies this summer. Just shows how wrong thinking can be. This was posted before the holiday weekend in which "Hangover 2" wiped the floor with "Kung Fu Panda". So far this seems to be the Summer of the Yahoos ("Fast Five", "Hangover") and the bigger franchises aren't doing as hot as expected. But at this point there's still no love for "Rise of the POTA" (they compare it to "I, Robot" but without Will Smith). They think it'll make as much as "Bridesmaids"? This is war!! Maybe the trailer this week will change some minds.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3156
#1: "Harry Potter", what, 8? - - $350 million
#2: "Transformers 3" - - $320 m.
#3: "Kung Fu Panda 2" - - $285 m. (WRONG!)
#4: "Cars 2" - - $270 m.
#5: "Hangover 2" - - $255 m.
#6: "Pirates 4" - - $230 m. ($635 m. worldwide so far, that's a lot of treasure, savvy?)
#7: "Captain America" - - $200 m.
#8: "Thor" - - $180 m. ($412 m. worldwide so far; POTA2001 made $182 m. domestic 10 years ago with no help from 3D prices)
#9: "Super 8" - - $180 m. (a real wild card)
#10: "Zookeeper" - - $170 m. ("Dr. Dolittle" wannabe, Arthur Jacobs was ahead of his time)
#11: "X-Men" - - $155 m. (this is getting great reviews, congrats to Fox, we'll see this week)
#12: "Green Lantern" - - $130 m.
#13: "Bridesmaids" - - $125 m.
#14: "Rise of the POTA" - - $125 m. (or "I, POTA") <.html

If there's something about X-MEN: FIRST CLASS that makes it a "higher-than-expected-grosser," then RISE could benefit from the exposure. I'm assuming a new RISE trailer will play before X-MEN. But I really wish Fox had produced CAPTAIN AMERICA, because I think that's going to do better than X-MEN.
So far, I think this is a pretty lackluster summer movie season, and the 3-D fade is fast fading away. I got suckered into FAST FIVE, but I haven't bothered seeing anything else and went to nothing this weekend. I'm just not interested. Now, I plan on going to X-MEN next weekend, but I sure hope it's worth it.

Give her a break. She's 41 this year.
and she's realized there won't be a sequel
to her movie. But there's one up side. At
least she can still get arrested in Hollywood.
Which is more than some actors can say.

.htmlI completely agree, John. Nix, for me, is the standout character in this series. Aside from the artwork being a bit too Burton-esque in regard to the female chimps, I'm lovin' this series.

You are very welcome. I'm happy to be able to
contribute a little something to the group once in a while. When I come
across some more vintage stuff, I'll be sure to forward it to the group.
Enjoy!

| Subject: OT: Mystery Sci-Fi Film? |
|
.html Hi Apers,
I was wondering if you could have me remember the name of a sci-fi film hopefully made in the 60's?
I think it starred Liam Sullivan (Star Trek: Plato's Stepchildren), but his filmography does not indicate the film in question-so maybe I'm wrong.
It's been so long since I saw the film that I don't know the full story; but herewith is what I can remember:
A crew of 4 or 5 astronauts/spacemen crash on Mars, during the film they encounter a Martian with a transparent done head showing his brain, and apparently this Martian needs the humans help to shrink his city to help the Martian civilization to survive, the humans succeed in doing what was needed, and the city begins to shrink, but they have to escape city or be trapped with the Martians; then somehow at the end of the film the humans end back on their spaceship above Mars.
Well that's it, any help will be appreciated.
I'm hoping this film is availble on DVD, once I know it's name. <.html

Poor Estella. Perhaps nearing the 10 year anniversary of Burton POTA her
guilt finally set in and she went over the edge. Or perhaps she realized
that that fiasco was actually the highlight of her career.
