.html"The Hollywood Reporter" has scooped the first big news on the "Rise" sequel "Dawn of the POTA". First of all, Jason Clarke (from the Best Picture nominee "Zero Dark Thirty") has been cast in an unspecified role. But there's also some dish on the plot: it takes place 15 years after "Rise" and deals with two groups: "One focus is on the group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco. Another aspect of the story is the struggle of intelligent ape Caesar...to maintain dominance over his kingdom".

I guess Rupert knew what he was talking about after all. I'm not surpreised by this news given that there's been no announcement yet of casting. I think we knew James Franco would be in RISE before filming started, and although Andy Serkis will be back, I'm betting that the main character will be a human. Why? Because if Caesar were the main character, and I mean the character in most of the scenes, i.e. Taylor in PLANET, then that would mean one hell of a lot of CGI. Fox being Fox, I think they most probably want to keep the budget as tight as possible, and that's going to mean a POTA sequel -- with a lot of humans.
But, we'll see.

"And, here it is." As the news announcer says, I believe, in CONQUEST.
Jason Clarke? I used to watch him on "The Chicago Code" on Fox, which I liked very much -- so, of course, Fox canceled it. He's a little funny looking, but I like him, though I didn't care for ZERO DARK THIRTY... but who cares?
By the way, that May 2014 release date for DAWN? Krueger isn't going to be pleased.

Well, if FOX didn't like his 'take', what can we deduce? Studios are rarely noted for their thoughtfulness and subtlety, so I'm wondering if, maybe, we're heading for Transformers of the Apes? John, Scrolls.

Well, there seems to be a pattern here. This kid is Australian. Jason Clarke is an Australian. 20th Century Fox is owned by an Australian. Are we about to get a POTA movie with a strong ROAD WARRIOR vibe? Actually, I think the casting of this kid has a POTA TV series ep. "The Legacy"/Jackie Earle Haley vibe to it that makes me afraid... very afraid. Think, 20th, and please don't go there. <.html

Well, I guess I can simply hope he gets killed in the first 15 minutes.
Sorry, but I'm just not into POTA to see the adventures of human kids. Wasn't there a kid in the dreadful Burton movie? Luckily, like most of the cast, he had very little to do.

I think it's because Fox is owned by an Aussie, and there are an increasing number of Aussie actors in film and TV these days, which means their agents send them to where they're most likely to get noticed, but that doesn't mean all Aussies are wacky like Mel. <.html

As the casting announcements begin, I notice some are wondering if the new actors are playing humans or apes. Judging from "Rise" I think it's safe to say the "known" actors (like Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee) are playing humans. In "Rise" the apes were cast from stunt people (or at least actors with a talent for physical movement). And they seemed lower on the cast totem pole. Even Andy Serkis came up last among the main actors (credited as "and Andy Serkis"). Reportedly Serkis is the star of the sequel, and getting a great payday, but what about the other ape actors, such as Terry Notary as Rocket, Chris Gordon as Koba and Karin Konoval as Maurice the orangutan (she also played the clerk who argued with Franco about court dates in "Rise")? Will their stars "rise" since they are actors returning to a hit franchise? Or will they still be seen as glorified stunt people? If they get more
billing priority, how will that affect who is cast as humans? Since the movie is reportedly about a "group of scientists" we might have some more interesting human casting announcements to come.
Old school POTA didn't seem to have trouble getting top actors to don the makeup but such actors don't seem as eager to be covered over by CG. It would be interesting if "Dawn of the POTA" is a groundbreaker in advancing credit for CG performers. Really, there hasn't been a live-action movie with star billing for a CGer; I guess the female lead in "Avatar". I don't count "Tin Tin" since that was an animated film. We'll see where the cards land but for now I think the big "Dawn" casting announcements will be for human roles. <.html

.htmlOn the Oscar red carpet, newly elected POTA star Jason Clarke said of his character: "I play a guy who's trying to save humanity". Since the movie reportedly deals with a group of scientists in San Francisco, presumably Clarke will play one of them. So what could a group of scientists do 15 years after the plague to stop the human decline? Find a cure? Create the ultimate weapon? It gives us a little clue where the movie is heading.
Meanwhile, Clarke may be going to the POTA but his movie "Zero Dark Thirty" lost the Oscar to a movie about John Chambers.

Caesar's human resistance is growing. Gary Oldman has been cast as the human leader Dreyfus. He was the original choice to play Thade in POTA2001 but reportedly talks broke down over salary. Certainly it can be said they are going for good actors, so there should be some meaty human scenes in "Dawn".

.htmlHere's a recent interview where Jackie Earle Haley talks about many of his acting roles over his long career, including his dream job as a kid working on the POTA TV show. He sez "that one was really cool, getting that part. I was and still am a huge POTA fan. And, by the way, I loved the last movie ("Rise"). Honestly, I've liked all the incarnations, if for different reasons... what was really cool was that Roddy McDowall was part of the series, so that was really exciting, because I was such a fan of his from the films... I don't think I ever actually talked to him when he wasn't in his ape outfit."
Jackie also talks about how a makeup artist on the show gave him some ape appliances and showed him how to put them on, and he was an ape for a couple of Halloweens. Here's hoping he gets to return to the POTA in a role soon.

Didn't Gary Oldman just recently (2010) play a similar part in the post-apocalyptic THE BOOK OF ELI?
Oldman is a good actor, but I think he does too many things, like playing Dr. Smith in the reboot failure LOST IN SPACE (Oh, the pain!), but maybe, like Roddy McDowall, he just "loves to work."
Anyway, I hope DAWN isn't anything like THE BOOK OF ELI.

POTA is on the "Rise" again and that potentially means new toys and collectibles. I have my own ideas about who would be a good company to carry the license but I'm taking it to my grave. OUCH! OK, I'll talk! How about NECA for a line of "Rise", "Dawn" and classic "Apes" figures? They used to be the poor man's McFarlane Toys but I'm impressed with their work these days (as reasonable Toys 'R Us toy toys; there's also the expensive high end Sideshow and Hot Toys). And they've been getting cozy with Fox, doing lines for "Prometheus" (a recent movie that wasn't as popular as "Rise"), "Predator", "Aliens", and even the classic "Batman" TV show (which recently got loose from the legal logjam between Fox and Warner Bros.). I'd like to see them give it a shot with a mix of the classic and new "Apes". How could we say
"Noooo!"?

And having said all that, don't you think it very likely that if he were cast in DAWN, most likely he'd play a human and given his looks, most probably NOT one of the good guys? I remember him in DAMNATION ALLEY. In fact, I mostly think of him as a kid actor from the seventies. I'm quite indifferent to his adult career. I'm glad he's getting gigs, but I'd rather look at Nic Cage in a movie -- and I'm not a Nic Cage fan. <.html

I've been impressed with the NECA stuff too and hope they'll turn their attention to classic APES as well.
I think, though, they'll be eating that PROMETHEUS stuff. Fox was disappointed with its boxoffice and thought there's still talk of a sequel -- forget it.

How could we say "Noooo!"?

.htmlValey of the Dinosaurs is, I think 1975-ish and involves an all-American apple pie family sucked down a whirlpool who end up in a world of cavemen and Dinos. They help them with their scientific knowledge and learn meaningful life lesson along the way.So....it's like APES,only with dinosaurs! .html.html It's always the same story w/3D. "It's not your father's 3D". It's fine for amusement parks but let us stick with 2D for the ape films. 2D has worked pretty well for the last 100 years.
