Jeff, et al...

Sarah from the Chimp Collaboratory is going to be here at 12:00 Noon
(Eastern) 9:00 am (Pacific). Elaine and Kasey are going to be our
hostesses, but others will be there as well. You know, we're
sending cookies to the person with the most thoughtful/thought
provoking question. That could be you. Also, I think, to the DG
member with the most (allowable) questions.

It would be great if you would join us.

Sure, I'll pop in. This is a fun week. A little bird told me (a mutant
little bird, natch) that someone's coming in Thursday, someone who hasn't
been here in a while. - - - Jeff

I wouldn't miss it. Unless I'm in a car accident, of course. Or if my
heart stops. Or what if a relative back East has two weeks to live? Yikes! I
could be kidnapped by Osama Bin Laden! What if I'm suddenly paralyzed and
can't type on the keyboard? Come to think of it, we're all lucky to be alive
THIS instant. Thursday, who knows?! - - - Jeff

Hi Elaine,

Sarah should be with us shortly. I invite everyone to be sure to
check out the links on the homepage. There is a link to the
Chimpanzee Collaboratory and a special link (from their site) to a
video of chimps in the movies. Chubbs from the POTA 2001 is shown
briefly in the video.)

Hi-

Thanks for inviting me. I'm not sure what y'all want to talk about,
but I'm happy to answer questions. As quick background, the
Chimpanzee Collaboratory works on legal, international, and public
education issues related to chimpanzees and other great apes. We
currently have a campaign to end the use of apes in entertainment
(movies, tv, ads, etc). We're a group of 7 non-profits and our
members include scientists, public policy experts, and attorneys. I
conducted our investigation of a chimpanzee trainer in Hollywood,
during which time I saw horrifying abuse.

I can also talk about sanctuaries, chimp communication (I worked
with chimps who speak sign language in graduate school), etc. Ask
away!

Sarah

Hi Sarah! We first met when I came to you with my "Finding Milo"
project. I was searching for the chimp from the Planet of the Apes
movie done in the 70s. You were very helpful to me. It's actually
then that I realized how important the Chimp Collaboratory is to

Exactly. Dr. Fouts is a member of the Collaboratory and was my
advisor in graduate school. The whole facility is designed to meet
the chimps' needs, not the humans'.

Right. Chimps in movies are only "useful" to their trainers for the
first few years of their lives. After that, they become too strong
(a chimp is 5-10 times stronger than an adult human) to be managed
and they often get cast off to other facilities. That's likely what
happened to the chimp you've been looking for. That's what happened
to Chubbs, who was in the Tim Burton POTA. He's now in a very
shabby rundown roadside zoo in Texas, squeezed into a tiny
overcrowded cage, because he couldn't "act" anymore.

The Chimpanzee Collaboratory actually seems to have it's hands in
most of the Apes projects that are going on now. You are active
with the Great Apes Project, also. Our group supports the Great
Apes Project.

What is your position in the Chimp Collaboratory and what kinds of
things are you involved in?

Most of the "leaders" in primate advocacy are a part of the CC. The
Great Ape Project is a member, the Jane Goodall Institute, Roger and
Debbi Fouts, Carole Noon, who founded and directs the largest chimp
sanctuary in the world (in Florida and in a former biomedical
facility in New Mexico), the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Doris
Day Animal League... Our member organizations sort of "pool" time
and resources to work on issues related to chimps. It's sort of
a 'think tank' of experts.

As for what I do, it's a bit of everything. As a primatologist, I
do a lot of research. People contact us when they see situations
where great apes need help (such as a roadside zoo or being kept as
a "pet") and we look into how we can help. I also do our
fundraising, media outreach, etc. We organize letter writing
campaigns to companies that use chimps in their ads. We're also
working on an international mechanism to protect great apes in their
natural habitats, where they are all critically endangered. Our
Director of International Programs is working with UN officials on
that project, which is very exciting!

Yes, you're absolutely right. Chimps in the wild travel miles and
miles, looking for food and engaging in social interactions, etc.
When you put them in a cage, they literally have nothing to do.
They can't do their "job" so to speak. Many caring individuals at
sanctuaries work hard to provide enrichment (magazines, books,
clothes, toys, branches, creative food boxes, etc) but to be honest,
nothing can replace what it would be like for them in the wild. It
profoundly affects them both physically and mentally. And in terms
of labs, that calls into serious question the validity of any
results they're coming up with.

Unfortunately, since chimpanzees and other animals are
considered "property" in every state, there is not very much that
can be done. You can read more about the facility at
http://www.peta.org/feat/awr/default.asp

PETA did an undercover investigation there. That website has some
addresses of places you can write to to complain. In short, though,
unless the "owner" decides to give him up, there's not much hope.
That's why it's so important to spread the word not to participate
in any part of the cycle of the use of apes in entertainment. If
you pay money to go see them in a movie, you're helping the trainers
continue the cycle, and those chimps will soon be dumped off
somewhere else.

In the information I was reading about the Great Ape Census Project
they mention that apes in movies is the one of the current uses of
apes that has no justification. I don't have a problem with that,
but with the decline of apes populations, would you consider that to

Sanctuaries can be wonderful. You're right that they should be in
the wild, but it's pretty much impossible to re-introduce a chimp
into the wild. They need to learn those skills from their mother at
an early age and if they don't there's no hope. So sanctuaries are
the next best thing.

As far as starting one, it's quite a process! There are endless
regulations and zoning issues to deal with. The USDA licenses most
facilities and to get a license you need to demonstrate experience
and expertise in the species you're trying to care for. Most states
have their own regulations and permit processes too. And then
there's the issue of money. To care for a group of 4 chimps for the
rest of their lives, it would cost more than a million dollars. I
always encourage people who are thinking about starting a sanctuary
to go visit as many as possible first.

You mean why spend time on the entertainment issue when they are
declining so rapidly in the wild? That's a good question. A study
at a zoo found that visitors didn't think chimps were endangered
because they see them on TV so much. It is difficult to raise
public awareness about their dwindling numbers in Africa when people
see so many of them in movies and on television. The issues fit
together.

I'm sure many lab scientists believe that their animals are well-
cared for. I guess it depends on how you define 'cared for.' If
they mean that they provide for their basic needs, including
shelter, water, food, etc., then that's one thing. But providing
for an animal's psychological well-being is a huge challenge, and
it's something that many lab scientists don't address. There are
some federal regulations for primates, but other animals are just
out of luck.

Chimps do fine in cold climates. Obviously they evolved in a warmer
climate, but the chimps I worked with in grad school live in
Ellensburg, WA, where the winters are quite intense! They go out
and play with the snow sometimes. Some like it more than others,
just like humans.

The biggest problem with CG and animatronics is cost. Hopefully
that will come down in the coming years, but right now it costs
about $500-$1000 a day to have a chimp on set, and sometimes $10,000
or more a day for an animatronic chimp. CG costs can go even higher
because it's so time consuming.

Yes, Elaine. The video mentions that, too. I'm interested in what
you said earlier, Sarah, about the use of chimps in Hollywood going
hand in hand with the awareness of shrinking chimp populations in
the wild.

Elaine asked specifically about Chubbs and what we could do to help
him, but it is a good question. It is likely that in our lifetime
we will see the extinction of several apes species. And, being just
one person, I really DON'T know what I can do to help. It's a big
issue. What can ONE person do to change the direction that the ball
is rolling in... the extinction of apes species? For some we are
very likely too late.

The CC doesn't take a position on zoos in general. There are many
AZA accredited zoos that have wonderful facilities, and there are
many unaccredited zoos that are awful. There's quite a range.

Awareness is a key issue. Spreading the word and making other
people aware is more helpful than most people think. The Jane
Goodall Institute website (www.janegoodall.org) has some helpful
ideas about what individuals can do. They have a group called Roots
and Shoots which targets kids and is a wonderful educational tool.
In terms of extinction, it's really about the next generation.

i may have said this before...
many thrift stores have old frames (and new ones, too).
you can remove the old picture and it will look great.
i have framed many things this way and i think they look great.
sometimes you can even find a matching pair of frames.

I saw a chimp on a show recently and for the first time ever (since being enlightened recently) I just switched off the show.

If it were my call I’d just impose a ban on monkeys and apes being used in film.  It is now no question that it is just a form of cruelty, and an extreme one at that.

    Hi Michael,

Well, the way I have always seen the Ape society is this.

They run on a status level, depending on what kind of species they are,
determines what kind of job they can do. They don't use money, they live on their
honour and their faith, but there are a lot of tasks that are too low for
them to do, so they make the humans do them.

Basically, without the humans doing all the menial horrible jobs, the
society would not survive, the Apes world would fall apart if the humans rebelled
    again'st them.

So the Apes only work for survival basically, they don't work for money,
there is no economy in their society.

    Yours Truly 2005,

    Kuiama.

Yes, LT, but I'm surprised your thoughts took that spin.  Definitely
so.  Although, face shape takes a back seat to habit!!  I have
always been a long hair hippy type person.  If it takes more than a

hair natural look actually takes a lot of work!  Blow drying, etc.
It just isn't for me.  Towel dry and go.  Comb if you have a
chance.  If not... so be it.  Definitely the Nova look.  (Except
that they had hairdressers and all the equipment and it probably
actually took a lot of work!)

the 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes – Taylor - Sideshow Exclusive

This really does suprise me and if a true indication of popularity

No we go by Queensland time which is an hour behind New South Wales
(Sydney) time. Which, by the way, is the time (NSW) that Whitty is
on even though Canberra is in the ACT (Australian Capitol

It's strange to think that it is tomorrow today in Australia because

They should break out some Ape-O-Nauts already, they have enough
Taylors. Though I can understand trying to milk the Heston license
    while it lasts..but still.

Side note, I got Cornelius as a late birthday gift yesterday, he's
really great despite the costume/facial flaws. Eventually I'd like to
touch up the face paint and bring him closer to the prototype version.

There is one BIG issue though. The artwork is all mine, but the

I would've posted this anyway, but it's actually fitting that the
Ladies have taken over just in time for this.

Here's some art I did.. It was for Art.com's Frida Kahlo contest, but
since I heard about it five days before the deadline, and because
their online submission system sucks, it was never entered. This
isn't the first Frida art I've done, but it is the first Frida piece
    that includes Cornelius!
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/verde1/04ab0d3d.jpg

    Babbling rant:
I'm a fan of Frida's work (and Apes), and since we're having the
DGMarauders theme, Frida's perfect since she was an adopted icon of
feminism. I disagree with the "Queen of Pain" label people have given
her, because it seems to define her in negative terms. Passion and
endurance still counts for something, even if she wasn't totally
idealic in all aspects of her life. Either way I prefer portraying her
in a more positive, warm light. And Cornelius is added to boot,
because it just felt right at the time. Enjoy!

them to do, so they make the humans do them.

They don't use money huh? Then I suppose they buy all their goods by being "honorable"? That's ridiculous... In the TV series alone they mention monetary terms in "The Good Seeds"... (Anto mentions reward money so he can BUY a bull calf, and the Gorilla Patroller says to him "You couldn't afford to BUY one" <a human slave that is> If they aren't talking about some sort of money, then what are they talking about? True, at the time of the TV series, they have humans to do most of their menial labor, but what about in the year 3978 when humans are dumb brutes? They have the Gorillas to do the back breaking work, and I am sure some Chimps are still involved in at least the agricultural aspects... Which leads us to money in the year 3978, which they have to have, or else how could Cornelius "be up for a raise"? If his raise wouldn't be monetary, what would it be? Honor? I don't think so... There are rich apes and poor apes, and it is money, land, horses, and humans the seperate the wealthy from the poor, not honor and faith... A poor ape can be just as "faithful" but not have the worldly possessions to show it...

Basically, without the  humans doing all the menial horrible jobs, the
society would not survive, the  Apes world would fall apart if the humans rebelled
    again'st them.

They do rely on human labor, no doubt about that... But it's more of a convenience for them to use the lower species than an absolute neccessity... They do just fine without humans in the time of PLANET/BENEATH... The APES world would not "fall apart" if humans weren't there to labor for them... The reason the higher up Apes fear the astronauts and intelligence in humans is because a few DO know what happened in the past, and they fear humanity regaining their position and technology and destroying the world!

So the  Apes only work for survival basically, they don't work for money,
there is no  economy in their society.

There is too an economy in their society... It has the "haves" and the "have nots"... There has to be an economy for their to be the differences in wealth. If there was no rich and poor, then every ape would own humans and horses and lots of land, all of which would be there whenever they need it, but that's not the case... Not all apes do own slaves, some are just scraping to get by with the little they have... Others own large plantations, and they are the rich ones... They're not rich or poor due to their faith and honor, they're rich or poor due to their status and their WEALTH (i.e. MONEY)

    Thanks all!

    Helen,
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist during the early middle years of last
century. She's had a infamous history of physical hardship, like
having polio, and being in a severe bus wreck early on in her life.
She was very nationalistic and political (..and very Communist). Same
with her husband Diego Rivera, who was a popular muralist at the time.
Her work was more personal, his was more political/social, and they
were big supporters of eachother's work. Despite them both having
    affairs at times.

(Diego's the man she's painting in that image I posted. And actually
that Diego portrait is taken directly from her own portrait of him. He
actually did look sort've frog-like in real life.)

.html That's an awesome paper model Mike and I do hope you get to distribute the plans.

I got into paper modeling a few years ago when a friend took to it and actually started desiging creations of his of his own after making tons of models readily available. His are mostly spaceships and robots, but the 'boxlike' shape of yours is very close to the box robots plans out there.  As I found out, creating some of these plans from scratch is not that simple. (I was 'beta' testing his models at one point).

The good news is that if your source will not allow distribution and you would rather not release you modified plans based on his original prototype, then maybe, just maybe I can convince my friend to make a Ape model himself. He is in fact an artist, so it won't be cheap imitation. But there is one catch with some of my friends work. While he does not charge for any of his models, he will sometimes create both low resolution and high resolution versions. Then he makes the low res versions free to download and then asks people to contribute to any charity of their choice to be able to get the high res versions. Once he receives a copy of the receipt proving you've made a contribution, he provides the online access code to download the high res versions. The concept is called 'donationware'.

I can't seem to find a link to his site, but I'll try to get back and post it.

My guess is that the apes use money because the tv show does portray apes at different economic levels. I personally do not see the tv show in the same universe as the movies, human slave labor plays a different role in the economic structure of their society. It is true, in the movies, the gorillas seem to be the ones doing the hard labor type work. Elaine

    ===============================================================

*** Cougar has already mentioned the main pieces of evidence
regarding the monetary system in use in POTA -- Cornelius being "up
for a raise", etc -- but there's also the matter of the bets Urko
insists on, mentioned in "THE HORSE RACE". That episode opens with a
horse race in progress, and an unhappy chimpanzee prefect complaining
that Urko insists on the race... makes the arrangements... demands
the bet. And the wager, in this case, involves HALF the prefect's
horses and HALF his land bet on the outcome. We don't know how much
Urko is putting on the table -- though, since he LOSES this race (due
to his racing horse throwing a shoe), we should wonder how much this
surprisingly lucky chimp prefect may have gained with his win.

Did Urko have to give up half his horses, and half his lands to this
prefect? Or, was the race declared null-and-void, due to the shoddy
blacksmith work? Urko is clearly peeved, since he threatens to kill
not only the next blacksmith but also his gorilla henchape, Zandar,
if Urko's horse should lose the next race at Venta! This seems to
indicate that Urko did indeed lose not only the race, but also some
substantial wager, be it horses and/or land.

In the Effinger novelization, there's mention of a "money pouch" that
Zandar checks during that first race (page 88). Presumably, the money
in question is in the form of coins, probably of gold or silver.

You just can't have gambling without some kind of valuable commodity
being wagered. Some things, like HORSES and LAND can be wagered.
Barlow has to wager ALL his horses and ALL his lands in the race
against Urko's horse, due to the fact that he's using a human jockey
in the race -- Urko talks him into raising the stakes.

But there also has to be a more fluid currency than Horses and Land.
There's the grain grown by the farmers -- both ape and human. There's
also the matter of the money to be paid to the human assassin Aboro
hires to kill Urko: in "THE TYRANT" (this from Effinger's
novelization), when Burke impersonates the assassin, Aboro asks
him, "He told you the price?"

"Yes," said Burke in a sullen voice. "He said I would be well paid,
    AFTER."

"Have no worries on that account," said Aboro. "Let's make the
arrangement now, if it worries you. Fifty kilos of gold and safe
    passage to another village." etc.

There's also the matter of set-up that Galen (as Octavio) suggests to
Aboro, in order to get Urko out-of-the-way. In order to get Urko
removed from the High Council, it's suggested that Zaius could have
it done if Urko were to be found to be corrupt -- to have succumbed
to bribery. Aboro's aide, Daku, mentions that Urko's assistant
(Bulta) accepts bribes. On page 35 of the script for "THE TYRANT",
Galen asks: "Can you prove Urko knows about that?"

    ABORO: "He didn't."

GALEN: "Then that's no help. But let us suppose there exists
incriminating evidence in Urko's home... such as contraband gold. We
have only to prove a connection between the gold and some corrupt
    act..."

I think this clinches it that the Apes do use GOLD as a form of
money. They might use silver, too, but gold would probably be worth
more to them, just as it does for our society.

In "PLANET", Lucius complains about "money-mad grown-ups" who'll want
to put Taylor, the Talking Human, in a circus rather than in a public
zoo, so that apes will have to PAY for what they rightfully--

"Sto-o-op making speeches and show me the order!"

The apes use money, Kuiama. In specific, GOLD, probably in the form
    of coin.
