Thomas Fletcher did the "official" mapping of the Planet
of the Apes filming locations at Malibu Creek State Park. From
emails Thomas sent me:
The way I got the job mapping the filming locations at the park,
the first time I went to it, I asked to see the Planet of the Apes
locations, and they did not know for sure, just a general area—unbelievable!
So I approached the head Ranger/Docent, and I told him I could geo-track
the exact spots by triangulating the mountain locations in the shots,
since they do not change, and it would be something people would like
to know while visiting the park. We ended up mapping over 100 movie
locations—now there are signs donated by the Hearst Corporation.
The waterfall was created by Using a firehose (and was also used
Doctor Dolittle (1968). The water level in the pond was too
high, so I could not get an exact angle, but the tree in the shot
is growing out of the stump of the tree that is in the 1968 shot.
The "cliff" is literally a drainage ditch at the edge of the
cornfield. It is very over grown—that is the best shot
you can get (the grass blocks the view if you go to the proper location).
These photos were taken in 2021.
