ABC 666 23/07/2004 "DRIVE" - ROD QUINN Talks with Bruce
Smeaton about Jerry Goldsmith.
"Great Hollywood film composer Jerry Goldsmith has died.
Mr Goldsmith composed the scores for over 300 films and TV shows,
including Planet of the Apes, Basic Instinct, The Waltons, Star Trek,
Poltergeist, Rambo, Chinatown, The Omen and Alien. Australian film
composer Bruce Smeaton says the Hollywood music nearly collapsed at one
point, and Mr Goldsmith helped re-invent the composition of soundtracks.
Mr Goldsmith was able to create mood through his often abstract
soundtracks. Romantic comedies were struck from Mr Goldsmith's list of
work. Mr Smeaton says Mr Goldsmith was a pioneer in television music. Mr
Smeaton personally knew Mr Goldsmith, and wrote over 2000 TV jingles in
Hollywood. Mr Smeaton worked on the scores for films including: The
Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith, A Town Like Alice, The Cars that Ate Paris,
Seven Little Australians and Picnic at Hanging Rock. Mr Smeaton talks
about working on film and television scores in Australia and
America."
