Acetate Masters
From Harry:
I was lucky enough to win this 7-inch acetate master recording for
Escape—it's like a 78 heavy-type vinyl. It's titled
"Theme from Escape from the Planet of the Apes," but is in
actual fact the
"Shopping Spree" track. This ties in with
the sheet music I
sent you years ago that listed the music as a title track but was again the
"shopping" cue.

After I posted this on Facebook, Alan Maxwell provided additional information:
I have this LP among my PotA-related music collection and this post inspired me
to go and revisit it. A little addendum: the version on this LP, which is
clearly a different recording to Lalo Schiffrin's original is credited to the
Jeff Wayne Space Shuttle, produced by Ralph Stein. This same recording also
features on another LP of TV themes released by Wonderland Records, again
produced by Stein but only credited to the Wonderland Singers & Orchestra this
time. I have also come across another version entirely, this time credited to
the "London Philharmonic Orchestra with Galactic Symphony & Synthesizers",
which appears on a compilation called "Space Encounters". Makes me wonder how
many versions of Ape Shuffle there are out there!
From Alan Maxwell:
This particular song has interested me for a while not because it's a good song
(it's not) but rather as it would appear to be the earliest piece of PotA
cash-in music, released just a few months after the original film. It can be
heard on YouTube:
Gary Knight's "Planet of the Apes"
The lyrics do include the line "I landed in the year 2705," so I
hope that some other Apes nerd somewhere is doing their best to
come up with a plausible explanation as to how this song fits into the
timeline...
