A gorilla general,Urko as he is called Tends to his duty, riding through forests and fields To his destination, a crime scene. The farm of Darius, owned by a graying chimpanzee Yields many crops, tended by five humans Raided by vicious gorillas out to plunder and destroy The humans would not allow it. Darius and his humans sit quietly, retelling a tale of violence To the gorilla general while the leader of the gang lies With an axe protruding out of him, the others worn and weary Appearing hagard and beaten down, bloodied and bruised They accept their defeat, extending their arms to be led away The general is puzzled as he observes the scene of little damage And weary gorillas. Darius is angry,he lectures Urko on being remiss in his duties Thank the lawgiver my humans saved the farm, our home, our only home The humans, three males and two females momentarily remain silent Eyes cast downward, except for one male who smiles at Darius and then at Urko Urko frowns at the human who speaks of the recent scenerio Of the gang entering the kitchen and attacking Darius. A female human uses an axe on the leader, the other humans hidden Attack the gorillas with simple items like frying pans and cooking pots An older female gazes angrily at the bloody knife she used to defend Darius She glares at Urko, "My best cooking knife" is all she says, Her voice trailing off, Urko reamins silent, not sure of what to say But thinking how fortunate Darius is to have these humans. His soldiers gather up the renegades, Darius speaks sharply of restitution For property destroyed, Urko mumbles "of course" and studies the humans Before he exits the farmhouse, his conscious speaks to him The faces of the five humans etched in his memory He shuts his eyes to make them go away. Several weeks later Zaius asks Urko why he is not pursuing humans With the fervor he once had,the gorilla lowers his eyes and gives a weak response "I've had other things to do" Zaius is puzzled and does not accept the lame answer Urko acts busy, hoping he'll leave the room The oranguatan shakes his head, "You've been acting strange since that farm incident" Urko gives him a stern gaze, then exits the room, riding his horse His thoughts about humans consume him And his destiny is changed.
