Apes Saga On DVD!
Planet of the Apes: The Evolution
All the apes you can take-- six discs' worth-- coming August 15.
The five Planet of the Apes movies-- Planet of the Apes, Beneath
the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest
of the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes
are finally being released on DVD, all at the same time, in a six-disc
boxed set called Planet of the Apes: The Evolution, with a movie to
each disc, plus an extra disc with extra features including the 1998 TV
documentary "Behind the Planet of the Apes."
The first movie will have a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, while the
rest will have Dolby 2-channel surround; all five movies are 2.35:1, non-anamorphic
video.
Each of the five discs will also be available separately for $19.95
apiece; the boxed set will go for $99.95-- pretty reasonable for a 6-disc
set, if you ask me. (Webmaster's Note: You can get them cheaper at Amazon.com).
Planet of the Apes: The Evolution comes out on August 15, 2000.

Here's a little tidbit from dvdfile.com (thanks to our tipster for letting us know):
Now, on to the goodies. First is probably the biggest Fox request as of late,
the PLANET OF THE APES box set. Indeed, this six-disc set is THX-certified and
all-anamorphic (yeah, baby) (Webmaster Note: This didn't happen), will
arrive around 4Q 2000 and features all the films plus an extra "sixth
disc" containing the terrific making-of documentary seen on the Fox
Channel, amongst other places. However, never fear, the sixth disc will be
included in the box set and you won't have to mail away for it! There may be
some other goodies on the discs, but in any event it looks pretty dang cool. No
price is yet available.

Review Excerpt (from dvdfile.com):
"For those out there that really do care about anamorphic enhancement on
your DVDs, this disc is a definite disappointment. I know it is for me. But, for
what it is, Fox has presented the film better than it has been seen before on
home video. They didn't get it all the way right, but they're close. For those
that don't give a hoot about anamorphic, (first off: shame on you!) I guess you
should go get yourself this disc, you damn dirty ape!"

Review Excerpt (from aintitcoolnews.com):
"This is a perfectly dandy box set — I mean, it's just dandy that it's
finally coming out, given that the restored set's been out for a couple of years
now on videocassette — but temper your expectations vis a vis supplemental
materials. An identical set of trailers and previews for all five films (and the
documentary) can be found on each disc — plus an unnecessary teaser for a
video game that's obviously in the early stages of coding — but beyond some
intriguing conceptual artwork on the first film's disc, the occasional
production stills, and a Web link, there really aren't a lot of goodies to be
had here."
