You know, being too young to get Apes first time around, I've always
kind of envied John's stories involving stealing pictures from
waiting rooms, having fights in front of nuns over TV series trading
cards, etc. but at last I can claim one small victory, as I have seen
the original PotA in the cinema (albeit not on a massive screen, but
big enough).

It was Sunday the 31st October 1999, and was part of a season of cult
movies at the Filmhouse, Edinburgh. At 12:30 I saw Logan's Run,
followed by Apes at 15:00 and then rounded off at 17:15 with The
Omega Man. I went back later in the week to showings of The Warriors,
Shaft, Silent Running and Soylent Green as well. Yes, I do still have
the tickets in case you're wondering how I remembered all that.

Magic.

The prints weren't in wonderful shape, but thankfully the PotA print
was in the best condition of all of them. Great stuff.

It's a shame that we're all so geographically far apart, because
actually it would be relatively easy (I believe) to hire out a cinema
and get hold of prints of all five movies.

Finally, does anyone know roughly when each of the PotA movies
premiered in the UK? I'd like to go back and try to dig out adverts
for them at my local cinemas of the time.

Back in the mid-70's before VHS or Beta the only way you could have an APES film to watch any time you wanted was to buy the crappy 8MM 8 minute films-or own a 'professional'  16MM projector. I had the latter and owned a complete TV version (pan & scan) of  PLANET of the Apes for which I paid $350.00 (about 2 weeks' salary in those days). For several years I amazed my friends with Apes, Dirty Harry, and Disney's Snow White shown in my room,  complete with 'blackout' shades for the windows and a screen. I owned a lot of TV shows, commercials and film trailers, too, including my favorite, a 10-second Conquest TV commercial. I sold them all many years ago.

1 - Why were there only 13 episodes? Was this due to bad ratings, or was that the plan?

2 - Is that Ted Knight saying "RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES" at the beginning?

Due to the high cost of animation most cartoon series produce 13 half hour episodes per season.

No that's Henry Corden's voice (sp) who voices Urko the gorilla on the series as well.

I had the former (8mm crap) and although I bought a 16mm copy of the trailer for PLANET, which I still have, I never thought to get a 16mm print of the entire movie.  I couldn't have spent that kind of money and now I'm glad I never did.  Prints fade and pan&scan SUCKS!

Yeah, I'd like to know the date PLANET premiered in London in 1968.  The Internet Movie Databse doesn't list it.

My experience was similar, minus fly double bill, I left before the
16mm screening, and in 98 I couldn't get in.... and a screening in 97
with Adam West's Batman in Pasadena. Still waiting for Conquest and
Battle. Yeah, Beneath in pink.....

I didn't know the Arclight was a different print than the Egyptian. I
thought the Arclight print's sound was terrible, and blamed it on the
theatre, the Egyptian the sound was excellent. Do you agree, or was I
just seated in a "dead pocket" ?

theater. I've seen it in better circumstances later but you can't
beat your first time.
> Then in '96 when the Eric Greene signings started, Bill Blake
screened it at one of the signings; I think it was 16 mm. Later that
year I saw it in a theater with Eric on a double bill with "Beneath"
(which had turned pink). The next year I saw it with Eric and some
friends on a double bill with "Escape" (which was in decent shape).
Before the screening they asked Eric to go up and introduce it, since
his book had come out.
> In '98 I got to go to the 30th anniversary party and see it
again. A new print with the ad for "Behind the POTA" on it. I saw it
at the Egyptian in 2000 with Charlton Heston the special guest. Same
print with the "Behind" ad. And then I saw it again in 2004 at the
Arclight with a Greene/ Abrahams/ Kartalian Q & A. They said this was
a brand new print that they made after the 35th anniversary DVD. I
gave a recap to the groups afterward, I think it was Feb. or March
2004. So that's, what, 6 times. But I haven't seen "Conquest"
or "Battle" in a theater. No violins, please. - - - Jeff

That's fine. I'm glad you know. Very happy for you, being so
secure in your knowledge. I'm just saying it's not uncommon
for movies to open a week or two in major cities before they
are in wide release in the rest of the country. So, maybe it
opened here at the end of March and went into wide

A while back when these were first announced some thought it would lead to the "Ape" cartoons getting an official release. Instead, "Apes" beat it to the punch. Well, kinda, since they're still only available in the "Ultimate Collection". "Trek" isn't a trick, all 22 eps are being released in a set. Nothing else to buy. I saw the remake at the Ziegfeld which is probably one of the best
theaters in NYC. The crowd was very up going in and very down coming
out.
The Ziegfeld has often shown reiusses and restorations of classic films
like Lawrence of Arabia and Spartacus. I've hoped that one day they'll
do the same with at least the original Planet. I would love to see it
on the big screen again.

Bruce

I had the former (8mm crap) and although I bought a 16mm copy of the trailer for PLANET, which I still have, I never thought to get a 16mm print of the entire movie.  I couldn't have spent that kind of money and now I'm glad I never did.  Prints fade and pan&scan SUCKS!

Hear that, Fox? That's why Paramount and George Lucas have ongoing franchises and you have to settle for Marvel comics' scraps. And "Garfield".  - - - Jeff

I checked my Arclight report from back then (first mention on 2/4/04; transcript on 2/9/04 in the archives). It was Mort Abrahams who said it was a new print. I wrote that I thought it looked fine but not as as good as the 30th anniversary print; some felt it looked washed out.

> In '98 I got to go to the 30th anniversary party and see it

at the Egyptian in 2000 with Charlton Heston the special guest. Same
print with the "Behind" ad.
- - - Jeff

Filmation did it on the cheap. Constantly reusing the same running and SFX scenes. As a long time Trekkie, I can say i thought the toon mostly sucked. The two eps that stand out were the Slaver Weapon (written by Larry Niven) and Jihad, about an alien warrior race looking for a reason to go back to war. There was another with the Guardian of Forever that was pretty good.

What suprised me about the Apes toons on the Ultimate set is that they are subtitled.

John,

That would be a valid argument if the Corringtons has written both
Escape & Conquest. But they did not, Paul Dehn did.

Dehn clearly stated on several occasions that he was writing a circular
story through Conquest. All that means is that the Corringtons
misinterpeted what Dehn had done before them.

Also, the Corringtons' didn't write the final draft of Battle. Dehn
rewrote their script and it was his draft that was filmed. So anything

Hi all. Just thought I'd introduce myself. I've been a
fan of everything Ape for about as long as I can
remember. I'm sure you can imagine my excitement when
I saw the fantastic Ape head set. "There's no way I
can ever afford that" I thought, as it retails over
here for £150. But then I saw a few weeks ago that
Deep Discount DVD had it for only £45! I was so
excited I nearly wet myself. I'd only just bought the
Apes six disc boxset, but I didn't care. I had to have
that head! So now I wait for the momentous morning
when the postman will knock with a rather large box.
I'm going to have to pay VAT (thanks Customs and
Excise) but it will still only work out at about £60,
which in my opinion is still a bargain!

To complete the experience I also ordered the Planet
of the Apes Revisited book from Amazon, so I'm looking
forward to that any day. This summer is the Summer of
the Apes for me!

I'm looking forward to getting involved in some good
discussions with you all and finding out all sorts of
cool stuff I didn't know.

Bye for now!

Theater in North Bay, Ontario. I remember that day
like it was yesterday, because it was the day after my
brithday and there was a total eclipse of the sun in
Brazil. At least I think so. I'm sure someone here can
set that straight for me . . .

Seven years later, I was born and . . .

Anyway -- I actually saw Planet of the Apes for the
first time on the Saturday afternoon movie that played
on one of the three TV stations we got in Sundridge,
Ontario. I caught bits and pieces of all of them. i
was six or seven or eight -- somewhere in there.

But the BEST showing I got to see was when I saw the
Planet restoration at the Egyptian theater in LA.
Heston was there and answered questions from hte
audience and from the host. One question I remember
vividly was why he went from playing characters like
Moses and Ben-Hur in serious big budget films to
playing roles in Planet of the Apes and Omega Man.

I remember the question vividly. Not so much the
answer. His answer was something like he did it
because it was fun.

Dehn wrote the original treatment for Battle. It's on Hunter's site

The Corringtons were brought in to do a new treatment (also on
Hunter's site). While very different from Dehn's treatment, it did
retain many of the same elements, characters and plot points as
Dehn's original. The Corringtons were then commissioned to write the
full script. But when it was delivered, J. Lee Thompson & Jacobs
were unhappy with it and the Corringtons were fired.

By this time Dehn had recovered and was hired to rewrite the
Corringtons script. Unfortunately, due to the oddities of the
Writer's Guild rules, the Corringtons were given screenplay credit
while Dehn was given story credit on the film when it should have
been the other way around.

In their first draft for Battle--'Epic of the Planet of the Apes'--the
Corrington's set the scene on the first page, explaining that the
Lawgiver will speak differently to how previously portrayed and that
this 'difference and others to be noted is due to the alterations of
that historical track which we have seen worked out in previous
films. The central story details these changes in ape history which are
due primarily to the influence of Caesar on Apes and humans'.
So, the Timeline is not circular, it's been changed. That ends that

According to www.tvshowsonDVD.com, Fox will release the Return series in a two-disc set on 10/3. You can see the story and the packaging at this link:

What's interesting is the final line of the story, which mentions "bonus materials" - episode previews for all episodes except "Flames of Doom" (the first episode, which makes sense). The discs in the Ultimate set don't contain these previews, so these sound like new discs. Of course, we've been fooled by this sort of trick before.

Since when did anyone have previews for cartoons, anyway? I certainly

I don't think that the timeline is circular like some members believe in. I think that the timeline is more of a multi-lane highway(like the DC or Marvel universe). If you look at Planet and Beneath the astronauts that landed on the future earth came from an alternate universe(aka ANSA) but when Zira and Cornelius came to 1973 earth, the president said NASA when he was talking to Hasslein. Watch the Escape DVD and closely listen to the president when he said that the scientist who were going over it were NASA scientists, not ANSA.

So anything
the Corringtons thought or said is negligible. They simply did not have
the final say, Dehn did.

BATTLE stinks compared to the original, but there are far worse movies than BATTLE.  I'd rather watch BATTLE than LOGAN'S RUN, for instance.  I think I'd actually rather watch BATTLE than THE OMEGA MAN, but, compared to PLANET, BATTLE stinks BIG TIME.

Anyway, I guess I prefer the extended version simply because it now offers the best picture and sound quality, however I have yet to sit down and entirely watch the new DVD.  It is BATTLE after all.

I read that there was to be a sequel for 2001 that was supposed to
be released in 2004. That came and went...
Is there more talk of a new one, and if there is wouldn't it be
a good one if FOX could snare Mr. Jackson? As long as he didn't use
cg's instead of real people, it could restart that old flame and
breathe new life into our beloved simians...
Richard Zanuck is getting too old to fart around with trivial
nonsense and I believe he's waiting it out for the RIGHT director to
take the film in a blockbuster direction. But that director must
have the vision. They must see what we the people WANT to see. FOX
needs to poll US - find out what is acceptable and what would sink
like the Bismark...Perhaps to email the studio (not that we'd get a
reply) with that suggestion. Maybe they would look at these websites
and read into just where we want our apes to go, hmmm?
If we want our apes to be our apes don't we have the right to
design them just as much as the producers do?
NO...
That's why movies fail. They poll us AFTER it is made, not
WHILE it's in the storyline...

LOGAN'S RUN is dreary nonsense.  Only good thing about the movie is Jenny Agutter nude and Jerry Goldsmith's score.  I'd rather watch BATTLE.

One thing that does rock is the new anamorphic DVD of CONQUEST.  I finally watched the entire thing last night and what a pleasure it was to see how visually striking the photography is.  It's only too bad that the ending was altered.  It's not that I think the change was bad, it's just too bad they couldn't have re-shot it properly.

I came away from CONQUEST this time thinking the movie is really about the stupidity of cruelty, especially to animals.  As such, I don't think the original ending was the right message to leave off with.  Kind of made the rest of the movie pointless.  Anybody else thought about this?

Didn't J.Lee Thompson state he thought the new ending was the correct
ending in Behind POTA? I prefer the new ending as well, it shows that
Caesar was superior to those in power, rather than just angry and
vengeful.

I love the Conquest transfer, they framed it correctly, they really
got it right. After speaking with Fox Home Video reps back in the
laserdisc days, I thought the day would never come....

We've been asking for years to have the animated series released, so
I'll be buying it even though it's already in the 'Head' collection. The
animated series has a lot of ideas and concepts that were way above
mere kiddies cartoons and if you read the novels, and THEN watch the
episodes, there's a whole new world of Apes that really takes hold.I
love the animated series story.I wonder what the 'previews' are? John,
