My grandmother bought this patch for me back in '74 or '75 at the local fabric store.  I have never seen one like it since then.  Are there anymore out there?  This used to be sewn on my denim jacket I had that I had painted Cornelius on the back.      Jeff B

curse you Rory! I was about to go to bed when I read this and I had to get the disc out and go through the movie and do screen captures and all BUT I think you are CORRECT! I think .....here's the proof...

    Now follow carefully... .

Figure 1 (enclosed) is the over head view of the spot. The yellow circle is the spot where I found and thought it might be the cage area but realised it was too small and too high up to have had the cage and zira's office there...the drop off is very steep and no water directly below as you can see when Cornelius starts up the stairs. There are some "ruins" there and a small platform and stairs but they are not right.

Figure 2 is the view from that spot (Looking south west).. Hence the yellow circle.

Figure 3 is from the film of course. Lucious and Zira driving off past the cage.....the steps leading down to the office are directly behind them (the direction they came from). See the rock formations in the red circle match Figure 2 as do the cliffs in the blue circle! and my photo is from a slightly higher elevation than the screen cap.....!

Now the big mystery is why I, standing on this plateau could not see the larger flat area below!

    What do think class? Class?

I've been obsessed with this since last summer ....!!

Wasn't the cornfield filmed in Arizona? You guys are the experts and I really don't know what I'm talking about.

    The map is excellent!

I think I know where the cornfield was...there is a long stretch of valley as you walk from the parking lot to the visitor's center...is that it? (see pic)
    Where was Battle's Ape City??

I never saw the POTA wall too....although I followed the trail that goes right by it down to the rock pool....guess I'll have to go back....
When I asked Creber where the cage was last year when he spoke at the POTA showing he made it sound like it was a completely different place in the park!

I guess he meant it was a different place than where Ape City was.

I think I know where the cornfield was...there is a long stretch of valley as you walk from the parking lot to the visitor's center...is that it? (see pic)
    Where was Battle's Ape City??

No, the cornfield was just a little further south of where you have it.  If you freeze frame the first crane shot of the astronauts coming out of the woods and seeing the humans feeding, look at the area of trees around the field.  It hasn't changed much at all, except that it looks like there's a small dirt parking lot where the astronauts once stood and there's a dirt road along that side of the field.  Back in that corner of the woods is where they made BATTLE's treehouse Ape City.

You may be right about the spot where Taylor was shot.  It had to be somewhere along the creek and it's all really overgrown now, so it's hard to tell exacly where it was.

By the way, I found a book that might be of interest to the group,
and you specifically. It's called "Hollywood Escapes: The
Moviegoer's Guide to Exploring Southern California's Great Outdoors"
by Harry Medved. I purchased it on Amazon.com specifically for this
trip, and he does a pretty good job of covering the POTA filming
locations. I'm also looking forward to the map you are planning to
make of the park. Thank goodness for Google Earth!

    Mike

Yeah, I have that book right here with.  Definitely something to have before you visit the park.  I'll scan a map that's in the book and post it later.

Here's the map of Malibu Creek State Park (The Fox Ranch) that's in the book "Hollywood Escapes."

I'm not too sure about the compass on the map.  Looking at Google Earth, I'd say from the area where the cornfield was to where Ape City was is a more Northwest direction than dead West, but then I've never been there!

The compass seems about right....maybe a bit off
so what exactly was shot where the "Group Campground" is on this map?
Is that the Battle City site?
Does the book list exactly what happened where?

Happy Friday everyone! This week's entry of CORNELIUS' JOURNAL is now available.

To read the JOURNAL entry either click the banner on the Yahoo home page or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/CJ.htm

There are some new additions to the Group Website. On the Planet One Sheets page (http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/Planet.htm) scans of the original Door Panels have been added. Hunter will have Hi-Res versions of these available on his site shortly. On Conquest's page (http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/Conquest.htm) a scan of the film's 6 sheet poster was added.

Thanks to Rory and Tim, new pics and the map of Malibu Creek have been added to POTA Locations: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/POTAlocations.htm.

Next Tuesday the AFI will annouce it's list of the Top 10 films in 10 genres. 50 films were nominated for each genre. The ballot for the 50 Science Fiction films nominated has been uploaded to the Files Section: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/10top10SF.pdf. Based on the criteria given (Critical Recognition, Popularity over Time, Cultural Impact, etc) I can't see POTA not making the Top 10 list, but I am prejudiced.

          Have a great weekend everybody!

Very cool! I have the original Marcus door panel but sadly didn't buy the others when I had a chance!
Is the CONQUEST 6-sheet the one right before the newspaper herald?

Saulo Adami sent me a copy of his new book, "Diários de
Hollywood: Um brasileiro no Planeta dos Macacos." Scans of the front
and rear covers can be found on my site now.

The text of the book alternates pages in both Portuguese and English.
The English translation is pretty rough in many spots, but that
doesn't take away from Saulo's interesting story. The book chronicles
his visits to the U.S. in 1998 and 1999 to meet with Natalie Trundy,
Jeff Kreuger, Bill Blake, John Chambers, and others. The book is
illustrated with photos of, among others, the makeup session with Bill
Blake that turned Saulo into an ape.

It's a slim, but fun, read, and I encourage everyone to buy a copy
          from Saulo.

Wahlberg Glad To Have Turned Down Ocean's Films

          By WENN, June 13 2008
Actor MARK WAHLBERG is relieved he turned down the opportunity to star in GEORGE CLOONEY's OCEAN'S movie franchise, because the films all "sucked".

The Boogie Nights star was initially approached to play the part of Linus Caldwell - a role that eventually went to Matt Damon - in Ocean's Eleven, but he decided against joining Clooney and pal Brad Pitt for the casino heist movie.

And, even though two of his own projects turned out to be flops, he insists anything would have been better than having to pretend he enjoyed making Ocean's Eleven.

He says, "It was well worth it! The second one sucked! People tell George Clooney it's great, but we all know it sucked.

"I made two bad movies instead - Planet of the Apes and The Truth About Charlie - but doing that was better than sitting with Brad and George, telling the press how great everybody is: 'We were in Europe, George was funny, then we had some wine...' - that's not for me. I do love those guys, but I had to step out on my own."

No, you're still too far north or northwest.  The area where the cornfield was (and the battle in BATTLE) is a large rectangular area, next to the parking lot.

Six-sheets a HUGE! I had an original Star Wars 6-sheet for years but wound up selling it. What did the first POTA film's 6-sheet look like? I've seen the one for ESCAPE & BATTLE.

I have a six-sheet from PLANET. It looks like the window card, but with not so bright colors.

Well, folks, even though it was nice to go to New York last March and see PLANET on the big screen again, looks like that showing of it in Jersey City was the one to go to. Also there's this news from Cinemaretro.com:

"Hundreds of fans attended last night's big screen showing of the 1968 sci-fi classicPlanet of the Apes at the Loew's Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey, making for a memorable evening. The show was preceded by a wonderful recital on the theater's magnificent organ and there were displays of original Ape movie memorabilia and collectibles. Best of all, Twentieth Century Fox provided a superb archival print for the screening, making for an extraordinary evening of entertainment. Cinema Retro Editor-in-Chief Lee Pfeiffer introduced the film and gave some insights into its production. He also had Fox's permission to reveal a few details about a new DVD project that Cinema Retro is contributing to: a forthcoming 40th anniversary Blu-ray release of the Ape films that will included extensive extras (the details of which are not being revealed at this time). However, they will be of the "everything but the kitchen sink variety". Pfeiffer also informed the audience that he and co-publisher Dave Worrall are writing a hardcover book about the history of the series that will be included in the deluxe box set release. This is the second book Cinema Retro has worked with the studio on, the first being The Great Fox War Movies which covered the making of The Longest Day, Patton and Tora! Tora! Tora! Keep tuning in to the Cinema Retro web site for any official forthcoming press releases."

I was at the Loew's New Jersey last night with Jeff K. The print was better than the one at the Ziefeld. The manager said that is was an archive print directly from FOX. However, there were some visible splices in it. Also, it was a bit dark. Oddly, the manager said that when they reviewed it the print was too light in some places; so I think they might have been over compensating a little.

The theater is old and didn't have air conditioning. Luckily it wasn't too hot last night so it was about 2/3rds full. The audience seemed to enjoy the film, clapping, laughing and cheering in all the right places.

Jeff and I smiled in amusement when Lee Pfieffer of Cinema Retro announced the Blu-Ray release since we've all known about it here for a couple of months. The surprise was the announcement of the book that will be included with the Blu-Ray set.

All in all it was a good experience.

Nothing to be sorry about Colin. We really appreciate you bringing it to our attention for there may be other group members who don't have the particular DVDs which include these videos.

I'm reading that the man who might have done the makeup for the APES remake (or reinvention) -- and might have done a better job at it in my opinion -- has died.

This is sad news, which seems to be the only kind of news we get these days!

I've just created a new poll regarding the old 1970s Marvel magazines.

The results will be very helpful for something I'm currently working
on so if you could take a minute or two to cast your vote I'd be very
              grateful.

              Thumbnails for all the covers can be viewed here;

Larger versions can be viewed on both the group sub-site and Hunter's.

CBS is showing another one of those commercial filled AFI movie list specials tonight (Tuesday), which means I'll record it but not watch it live so I can skip to the stuff that interests me, that being if PLANET will be among the top ten SF films?

              It better be.

Well the AFI screwed up again and left POTA off the list of the Top 10 SF films. The list is as follows:

              1 2001

              2 Star Wars

              3 ET

              4 A Clockwork Orange

5 The Day the Earth Stood Still

              6 Blade Runner

              7 Alien

              8 Terminator 2

9 Invasion of the Body Snatchers

              10 Back to the Future

Now these are all good films but some, based on the AFI's on criteria of Impact, Cultural Signifigance and Enduring Appeal, just don't belong. Back to the Future is a good film but it is a joke to include while omitting POTA. Alien is another good film but is more of a horror than SF film. Terminator 2??? I could see if it was the first Terminator which was a ground breaking film, but the sequel? They have got to be kidding.

I would eliminate Terminator 2 and put up the original.  Replace Back to the Future with POTA (not necessarily in the same order as they listed either)

Smells like AFI is kissing ass.  The one film I which I find truly disgusting to be put so high on a podium would be,  STAR WARS.  It may be popular but I still think its hack.  I was board with that major rip-off of everything that came before it, and never fell for that crap spouted by Lucas, “Homage”.  He stole from all that he saw in college and simply built on it.  TERMINATOR is another rip-off stolen from two episodes of the original OUTER LIMITS.  It was another film whose popularity went by me.  Cameron was later sued and lost – the end credits had to be changed to include a legend giving note to the person that won the case.  I know the list had TERMINATOR 2 but really that film was nothing more that supped up re-make of the first – only this time Cameron had a lot more money.  The man can only make even a halfway decent film only if his has a major budget – which means he’s only technical not talented. (Did anyone ever see his no budget PIRINA II: THE SPAWING?)
POTA was, and is an original concept.  Never improved upon, and holds iconic images and dialog which have stood the test of time – not just “in the moment” popularity.  It plays just as well now as it did when it premiered.  Unlike BACK TO THE FUTURE which just comes off as dated 80’s fluff.   In terms of make-up, costumes, set design, and music  POTA excelled and broke ground.

Well the AFI screwed up again and left POTA off the list of the Top 10 SF films. The list is as follows:
              1 2001
              2 Star Wars
              3 ET
              4 A Clockwork Orange
5 The Day the Earth Stood Still
              6 Blade Runner
              7 Alien
              8 Terminator 2
9 Invasion of the Body Snatchers
              10 Back to the Future
Now these are all good films but some, based on the AFI's on criteria of Impact, Cultural Signifigance and Enduring Appeal, just don't belong. Back to the Future is a good film but it is a joke to include while omitting POTA. Alien is another good film but is more of a horror than SF film. Terminator 2??? I could see if it was the first Terminator which was a ground breaking film, but the sequel? They have got to be kidding.

I think ET is dated and doesn't hold up. I think Clockwork and Body
Snatchers are horror as well... And Star Wars should have been
fantasy... There are great films in there, but based on dialog and
performances alone POTA is far better than any of them.

17 is/was my favorite, but, 10 is in my opinion, the best artistically.

And since the guy doing the violence
