Nuclear winter!
Yeah, it seems to me that there will be a lot of
sets. Vancouver in the winter sounds dark, rainy (3rd rainiest city in
Canada) with some snow.
But the director likes doing stuff for real,
that's why they went out of their way to shoot in the forests and traveled to
actual San Francisco for "Dawn". There might be other locations they haven't
announced yet.
If they're planning an epic battle royale I don't
see how they can get away from green screen.

I've been corresponding with the author of the book about Goldsmith's score to PLANET, "Simians and Serialism" By John O'Callaghan, and I've been learning many interesting things that he uncovered from the APJAC archives at LMU. I've asked him if I can share them here, and it's okay with him, so here's something he told me about the script to BATTLE:
Here's a little info I gleaned in the APJAC archives about the screenplay to BATTLE. Jacobs was quite upset when Dehn got sick and couldn't continue (much like the Goldsmith issue on BENEATH). He wasn't thrilled with the Corrington's script (though Fox had no qualms about it) and the story it was based on DID come from Dehn's last treatment before he initially bowed out. Jacobs was ecstatic when Dehn came back and did considerable work to it—way more than a simple John T. Kelley dialogue polish. When the Corringtons filed with the WGA for sole credit (no credit to Dehn OR Boulle at all) Jacobs was mighty pissed off about it. He personally testified to the WGA arbitration committee and was devastated by their final credit ruling. I must say, the Corringtons were trying to take a lot of credit for things they had no involvement in. Their letter to Jacobs (announcing their suit) can only be described as: Hubris. And the kind of trouble they caused Jacobs and
Fox finished their screenwriting careers—word gets around in Hollywood FAST. They were relegated to writing Soap Operas in the late 70's and 80's.
So, the BATTLE script may be more Dehn than we ever thought.
I hope everyone who's interested has gotten this book, for there are lots of such bits of info about the production of not just PLANET but all the sequels too. I'd like to start talking about them but wonder if I should wait. Some of you may still be on the fence about getting the book, or may be reading it now

Here's that picture grab I told you about showing the cornfield growing at the Fox Ranch in the spring of 1967. It's from the Season 4, Episode 3 of "Daniel Boone," called "The Renegade," which was broadcast on NBC on September 28, 1967. Luckily, it's on You Tube, so you can actually watch it, and even more luckily the scene involved comes only six minutes into the episode. You'll be able to plainly see that the area in the background is indeed the cornfield used in PLANET, and as far as I know, the only other appearence of it on film. Most likely the episode was shot in either April or May, but could be as late as June.

I myself never fully bought Joyce Corrington's claim that they completely threw out Dehn's story and started fresh. There were just too many plot elements that were the same or very similar between their treatment and Dehn's.

one and done, Jason Clarke (promoting his new film "Everest") says he definitely
won't be back for "War of the POTA". We can probably assume his family won't be
back either, so perhaps the film will go ahead in time to gain some
mileage. The end of "Dawn" left Caesar saying goodbye to Malcolm (perhaps as
a stand-in for humanity) so maybe it's for the best. But Clarke grew on me
and I was kinda rooting for his return.
Anyway, this pretty much wipes the slate clean.
The movie could take place 20 years later at the end of Caesar's life and offer

Well, now I'm confused. The two I bought on eBay are definitely a thinner
paper and they're also closer to 8 1/2 x 11. The age on the paper seems right so
I strongly doubt that they're reproductions, but I was surprised that the paper
stock was so thin. Better than loose leaf paper, but nowhere near the heavy card
stock used for the other lobby cards I own.

The Simians and Serials is fantastic and this is what I like to discuss being a musician and I would of loved to talk about a error or two about the mix of the music from POTA68 since I have cassette recordings from a Drive In with a missing car window speaker that I connected to a semi pro Panasonic recorder/player hard wired and the first TV broadcast hard wired as well to my parents Magnavox console from 1965 which had an incredible all vacuum tube sound system and so I disagree with the authors premise that the music was mixed very low (since Ive just listened on Oct. 18th) compared to the rest of the soundtrack. An incredible book I must say.
This was an error that happened in the 80s-90s video releases. The Cinemax and HBO showings from 1991-92 were perfect in balance and not to start an argument again but the last three sequels were "Stereo" or "Dual Mono" more likely, and done with care. Many BxW photos from Conquest show two microphones for dialogue only, one above and one below the actors, thats how we did Stereo or D-Mono in college. But it seems that Apes are just like the rest of these incredible silly times and have fallen to the most base (Low) of topics of discussion. Take care, John M. |

nice guy -- and brought up with him this very same subject. I remember
quite well how much louder the music was in PLANET's old mono mix
before Chace Stereo got their hands on it in the mid-'80s. I told him
that the mono mix on the Blu-ray is IN NO WAY the original mono
soundtrack, but just the 5.1 fake stereo soundtrack downmixed to mono.
He didn't deny what I was saying.
If the author, John O'Callaghan is his name, would probably very much
like to discuss POTA with others here, but unfortunately his email
address is a .com address and our lovely moderator banned him.
Whatever.
Anyway, I'm all for discussing stuff other than POTA related
merchandise, I just don't want to debae any longer the worth of BENEATH
or the correctness of the timeloop view. That stuff has been beat to
death.
I don't have time right now to bring up anything else I've talked with
the author about, but I will as soon as I can. Lots of interesting
stuff.

This was an incredible book loaded with facts that Ape nuts like myself and a much more refined fan like yourself have been spouting for ages. The Apes films Audio and Video got destroyed by Chace and others about the time you specified. I remember speaking with Lewis Lagrone and the infamous Bart Pierce about how it was going to be great, blah, blah, blah.. At exactly the same time Im watching on Cinemax Pota68 Conquest 72 and they were great in all ways.
After the laserdisc debacle I asked Pierce why the HBO/Max can have such lovely transfers and the official releases stink and he said, "Well, they do their own transfers from elements we{FOX} give them. That seemed somewhat unlikely but it was done in rare instances. Ofcourse I go on and say then "Why not hire the HBO techs to do your transfers and then maybe you{FOX} can make some money and get some props for doing some good work which at that time Fox did not know how to do. It all ended badly and I never talked to them ever again.
After visiting Joe Russo at his apartment (I found a flyer touting his proposed book back in the mid 80s so I arranged a fan meeting to look at each others collections with my friend in tow. All went well and then I stopped by a friend from college who knew somebody who knew somebody etc.. and just like the author speculated he insisted their was a four track stereo magnetic striped version of Pota68 around. Cause of all the better audio versions Ive heard I sort of beleived him like "The Paul is Dead mystery" I never gave up though that a three strip audio work version or elements are somewhere since the sequels seem to atleast sound like they were mixed from better elements, sans Beneath with the sound being off and missing in a few parts and till this day remnants are heard on the bluray. Pierce said he found better Beneath elements in Spain of all places.
As my old tired mantra is getting long in the tooth the original Apes films still need to be restored properly. With all the money the good new Apes films are making Im sure 100 grand can be found to do justice to a series and esp. Pota68 that is still a monument to Hollywood myth and movie making. I'm afraid I'm pretty much had it with the good fight. The situation is kind of hopeless with Fox now. There's a huge push in the industry to go with digital downloads and streaming services and to start to make all disc media (DVDs, Blu-rays, and the soon to arrive UHD [4K] Blu-rays) very niche markets that will only be available to order on-line and perhaps only as "burn-to-order" special items. This isn't going to happen anytime soon -- perhaps not for another five to fifteen years, but it's coming. I read some depressing news over the weekend at the Home Theater Forum website, where there's a thread (here's the link: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/343570-at-fox-studios-with-the-execs-post-your-fox-questions-here-and-we-will-ask-away/
) that states Fox hasn't yet remastered PLANET in 4K. Well, I take that as only meaning they haven't done it yet, but with the 50th anniversary in 2018, who knows what they have planned (they won't say, of course -- they never do), or if they'll do anything at all? You just don't know, and I'm close to not giving a damn any more, though I know I still will.

.htmlMy whole reasoning for pushing the Apes remasters are simply that their is so much money around and to be made and still to this day FOX treats the original series like orphan children. Sure with the reboots and such and some interesting tidbits on the Bluray extras how can I say this but only those of us that were their since the start-1968- can understand the frustration. Also the same old 'If they can fix that old film why not Apes?' The Beatles promos and more are getting a Bluray orgasmic release and I can only hope one day the original series gets the same before the customers that care die off. Only quibble – these events are obviously taking place on the East Coast in New Jersey. However, your Ape City Chronicles (specifically, referring to the location and details associated with the original Ape City, which was quite close to an agricultural village and located an isolated valley with orchards and vineyards) are clearly happening on the West Coast, which would go along with the location of Central City in the TV series. So you have more continuity with the timeline leading to the first two films, but less so with Battle.

The last DVD release included the extended cut of Battle sought by fans for years. Sure with the reboots and such and some interesting tidbits on the Bluray extras how can I say this but only those of us that were their since the start-1968- can understand the frustration. Also the same old 'If they can fix that old film why not Apes?' The Beatles promos and more are getting a Bluray orgasmic release and I can only hope one day the original series gets the same before the customers that care die off. Thanks. Glad you're enjoying the Hasslein Institute. I've gotten some feedback offline and it has been mostly positive.
In regard to Ape City Chronicles, it took place on the east coast like Battle. I would suggest that you re-read chapter 12 which explains how Central City was a colony in the west of the original Ape City in the east: Ape City Chronicles.

Only quibble – these events are obviously taking place on the East Coast in New Jersey. However, your Ape City Chronicles (specifically, referring to the location and details associated with the original Ape City, which was quite close to an agricultural village and located an isolated valley with orchards and vineyards) are clearly happening on the West Coast, which would go along with the location of Central City in the TV series. So you have more continuity with the timeline leading to the first two films, but less so with Battle.
Of course, you could say that your Ape City Chronicles is an alternate timeline to the story told here J. |

.htmlI don't agree either. In fact, I think Fox has repackaged the DVDs and Blu-rays TOO MANY times, but that's all they've done, just repackaged -- not restored. Fox's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, hardly the seller that the APES films have been I'm sure, has had a DVD release, a Blu-ray release, and then a 4K restored Blu-ray. Both VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and FANTASTIC VOYAGE have had the 4K restoration work for their Blu-ray releases, but Fox has only repackaged the APES films with transfers that are nearing a decade old. Lets just say the films that the original POTA series helped to bring to this world and influence get a much more dignified release of extra footage and "found" footages that do not seem to always take decades to get and hence bring more problems along the way, wrong color, sound mixes, lost frames, aging and etc,etc.. because time ruins many elements and transfer them to digital seems to take forever and when done its by persons who at times do not know their craft, the Apes history or a familiarity with the source materiel or a total lack of respect for the Apes as a whole.
Like some here Ive have seen and heard better elements and because of the smattering of books and such that are bringing to light some of these thruths that full vindication will one day be mine. In other words fans who think the most important element of the Apes films are the Elements themselves.
What you have mentioned is true and that should be applauded but Conquest has special needs cause of the lenses used and the prolouge (which was cannibalized later on in the film when the guards chase Caesar around and under the Century City bridge and if you noticed the cops are changed during this sequence suggesting two different scenes and actors) this of itself makes restoring the prolouge problematic so who knows, oooyyy... its still around somewhere and the Original Version moniker Conquest gets now cause the last three reels are restored is playing with the truth- its just a found Japanese version. The Goldsmith cue at the end should not be as long as it is it should just be as long as the unrestored Conquest.
Im really a decent guy but being a film major, sort of, in school and meeting with Professors and heads of departments in the FOX company proper who I cant mention (J.A. are you alive) I just cant help but hope that we all can have better films to watch in the near future before we are all Ape sh&%. What all the moaning is really, really all about is that much more minor films from the same age get royal treatment and still to me the Apes are not getting this. All in all in the last 10 years when the HiDef trasnfers were being started technology has grown incredibility as it always does so a redo is in order as its done with so many "Lesser" films. Look at the fight that 1776 film had to go through but atlast the fans got what they should have gotten long ago. We are going through a time of hardware and software issues and I know companies dont know what to do with their properties ie. streaming, downloads, and hard collectable Blurays and such so it is convoluted for sure.
Ive went over this a few times so I apologize before anybody says "Ive heard this before, get off your hi horse". I guess so.
One last major transfer with the three strip sound elements, I say they are available, and digitally or better yet the negative elements being transfered properly. Somewhere in the world their has to be something better than these Blurays...has to be.. Take care, John M. |

Well, I don't want to get too into the weeds on this because it's become like beating a dead horse -- Fox is going to do what it's going to do and in the time frame it's going to do it in -- or it may do nothing. Who knows? As I've said before, APES may be the thing we love and really care about, even be passionate over, but it's Fox's property. Hope for the best, but expect the worst, then if the worst doesn't happen, what you do get is that much sweeter.
One thing I think everyone here finally has to wrap their heads around is you can forget any "lost footage" or scenes that didn't make the final cut ever appearing as extras, or far more unlikely, being put back into the films. I don't think anyone that works for Fox cares about this, and I strongly suspect that if it was in the vaults, we'd have gotten it by now.
But one of the things about the book "Simians & Serialism" is that it's so well researched that we now have a record -- without having to unearth it ourselves -- of just what was cut from PLANET (and to a large extent the sequels too), including such things as the scene involving Nova being pregnant. John O'Callaghan has found that besides the "official" version as to why this scene didn't make the final cut, some of it may have involved Linda Harrison giving a bad performance that everyone involved thought could require retakes if the scene were to be left in. If that decision had been made to leave it in, then I very much doubt they would have returned to the Arizona location to retake Harrison's part of it, but instead we would have something inserted shot at the ranch, or worse, a rear-projection set up -- and how crappy would that have been?
I also want to tell everyone here that Mr. O'Callaghan was a projectionist for many years, knows Robert Harris, and has produced and shot 70mm shorts. I've had a few interesting emails on the subject of elements and soundtracks and all that, and, well, in the future I'll share what I can. I kind of doubt he cares about posting in this group -- but he is "lurking."

To be part of a POTA mailing list yet not understand how huge a thing
the Mego toys ("Dolls, etc..") were in the mid-70's OR grasp the fact
that were it not for the four sequels/two television series there would have
never been a POTA phenomena (or said Yahoo mailing list) in the first place
is- at best- akin being stuck in the late 60's and- at worst- painfully
ignorant. We also wouldn't have the reboot trilogy that everyone is drooling
over which- coincidentally- started this thread ("First photo from the
WAR!").
