-- I think all the
over analysing of Apes is ruining it for me. Who cares if there are
inconsistencies? So there is a dog in the TV series and 'that page' in the book
that they look at and all the other cock-ups they made throughout the movies.
As far as I'm
concerned the TV series is part of the same looped timeline as the movies (which
is a circle for me) and I really don't care about little things that are
'wrong'. A little bit of imagination and creative thinking can overcome all the
faults if one wishes to really make the effort but I just can't be bothered
anymore. I just watch the movies etc. and try to enjoy them as much as I used to
(which isn't easy these days).
Neil
like there is a dog in the tv series.

Scrolls does have some great interviews and things like the latest fantastic
strip by their artist Mike McColm but they also pad it out with a fair amount of
rubbish.
All those
interviews with Apes related people who spend the whole interview saying how
they don't really remember a lot about it or it was 'just another job' etc.
Or that
awful Janet of the Apes thing.
I know they must
put a lot of time and effort into it but luckily for them they have had little
or no competition over the years.

I've actually found most (but not all) of those interviews interesting
despite that.

On the contrary, its the over-analysis that makes this forum so
entertaining. Looking for reasons why the dog could exist in the TV series, or
the variances in Cornelius' testimony and the events that actually play out in
CONQUEST and BATTLE are the backbone of this group - remember its a POTA

 What does
recession, large-scale financial institutional collapse and currency devaluation
bring to mind?
Of course: Planet of the
Apes, where
Giant Apes - Capitalists ruling the Jungle through asset
management
Orangutans - Puppet leaders in power positions, yet controlled by Apes
Gorillas - Enforcers whose brute strength protects the Apes power
Chimpanzees - Masses of workers manipulated like the Humanoids
Flying Monkeys - New high-tech species immigrated from Land of
Oz
Even though MarketWatch columnist Paul B. Farrell goes way overboard with the
damn-dirty-apes motif, he does present a crazy-quilt cast that somehow makes
sense. Take, for example, the Wall Street equivalents for one simian class:
Orangutans: Puppet Leaders
8. Politicians, Congress & Executive. Follow lobbyists' orders; love
perks, status
9. Securities and Exchange Commission. Always favors industry over
investors
10. Mutual fund directors. Paid over $250,000 annually, favor their
insiders
I guess the appropriate d'enouement to this monkey business will be

I think a lot of great stuff is put out there and I like seeing people take the time to create new things that bring interest to POTA
Yes I agree maybe not everything is always great but I would still rather see people try then not bother at all.
My comment wasn't about Ape Chronicles specifically. I just feel a lot of negative comments posted every single day on all the POTA message boards.
People dont seem to like anything 99% of the time
If you dont like Ape Chronicles, thats totally fine. You can't please everyone and yes you should only buy what you like whether its fanzines, action figures, comics etc etc etc.

One thing about Rich's timeline: after a few years trying to find out
about the plot and stories carried in the Adventure comics, his was
the only site to give any info on these. Almost all I know about the
Adventure comics I got from reading his timeline (and buying the odd
issue when it turns up in my local shops - I've only got about ten

For me, it had nothing to do with being part of a clique and
everything to do with how certain people treated others here (and yes,
we all know to whom I'm referring). I saw no point in pointing people
to the PotaDG when I couldn't stand to be a member of it myself.
Since I've been back, I just forgot that it wasn't listed. Now it is.

But adding unrelated elements just for the sake of making them "related" isn't really neccessary. It's grasping at straws to make everything one neat little package. ***

Are not timelines the crux of the entire POTA saga? How can this be called
a Discussion Group if people dont want to discuss certian topics? Now lets stop
complaining and lets talk apes!

It seems it is always referred to as being by Dave Ballard and me
which is not quite the full story. Michael is listed as 'editor' but
in reality he was much, much more than that to the project.
The original story was changed quite a bit to work as a comic strip.
Some stuff was dropped and extra scenes added, some of which were
Michael's original ideas.
If it were being done again today I would have the credits read
something like: Adapted from the Dave Ballard short story 'Last Stand
in the Forbidden Zone' by Dave Ballard and Michael Whitty, Pencilled &
inked By Neil T. Foster, Lettered by Dave Ballard, Edited by Michael
Whitty. I think that would be more accurate.
As well as the creative input, the scanning of all the original
artwork and hawking around the chapters to various web sites etc. the
comic would never have even happened at all if not for Michael
actually putting the team together in the first place. And then
keeping it together as well as continually offering invaluable support
and regularly giving me a kick up the backside to keep me motivated
and focused. I for one could not have done it without him.

*** I've seen "ROLLERBALL" and "DEATH RACE 2000" only once each, and
didn't particularly care for them. I'm not saying that they were bad
films, just that they didn't do much for me. As for them "exist[ing] in
the same universe"... well, why not? The crux of it would be the
timeline: when did "ROLLERBALL" take place? The other flick took place
in the year 2000, of course.
As for other business... what the bejeezus happened to Mikey? I've been
busy as hell dealing with a financial matter that has tied up my time
these last few weeks, and I get back and see that Mike has gone apeshit
like the gorilla that strangled Milo. What happened to him? I should
say, first, that I'm slogging my way through the most recent 100 to 200
posts here, and it's possible that I'll read one that answers this
question I'm posing, so bear with me. Right now, though, I must say
that I can understand him being frustrated regarding lack-of-
participation (just about every time that I post a lengthy and relevant
message about POTA, I wait for somebody to respond to it, either
positive or negative, and usually hear crickets chirping, if that).
But his "f--- you all" line was outta line. If he wanted to ditch POTA
and end his participation in this group (which he co-founded), he
could've done it with grace.
One last thing. So far (with about 100 more posts to slog through yet),
I must admit to having a suspicion that "Mandy" is actually Mike in
drag, (re-)joining the group just to screw with our heads. I mean,
c'mon, the supposedly "phallic" shape of the ship? How many schlongs
have a tip that friggin' pointy? Go rent "FLESH GORDON" to see a
phallic spaceship!

I've always ment to ask Neil , how did you work with Michael and Dave on Beast ?
Did you get a "full" script with panel break downs, dialogue and directions or was it more of a plot which you did the break downs and visual pacing and then go back to Michael
to discuss and work out the final dialogue, captions after the pages were penciled ?
Did some scenes get added at a latter stage ?
Feel free to go into details

(I love to here about technical stuff like this!!!)

To follow up with the post(s) yesterday, I wanted to say that I found out the following regarding the in-store APES appearances:
In Canada, the store promotions were done by Parkdale Novelty, the distributor for Mego, they gave away photos with the Mego logo on them.
Likewise Neal Kublan himself travelled with Nimoy and Shatner for the Trek promotions, so it seems likely that Mego had a hand in the Apes.

-- We did start
with a full script and after extensive editing and re-writes we came up with one
that we were all happy with. I did start off using panel
breakdowns/directions from Ballard at first and we started with each page having
a set number of panels. As it progressed though I was using what he wanted
more as a guide and ended up putting in extra stuff and deciding for myself
things like how many panels to use per page etc.
One prime example
is the revealing of the space ship. That was originally scripted as just another
panel and I came up with the idea of making it a full page instead plus the
pacing of the panels leading up to it on the previous page. Another example that
I can recall off the top of my head is where a whole series of panels of Gideon
beating the crap out of the humans was changed by me to just one montage
panel.
After I completed
drawing and inking each 3 page chapter (as I didn't have a scanner back then) I
would mail the pages to Michael who then had to scan them and send the copies to
Ballard who added the words. We would then all review the finished pages and on
a few occasions I would suggest better locations in the panels for the dialog
and with Michael offer any suggestions we could think of to improve things like
the wording, pacing and any other changes we felt it needed. Most of the
time changes were readily agreed on by all and we got on with it with no
problems. It worked both ways as well with Ballard on one occasion not being
happy with the panel of Gideon holding the 2 humans by the throat as he was
standing too still. I completely re-drew that panel and sent it to Michael
to scan for Ballard to replace it.
And yes, scenes
were added latter, in fact eventually whole pages were added! As you know it was
originally an online project but when we decided to make it available in printed
form we decided it was too long for a single issue but not quite long enough for
two so decided to script some additional pages which could be fitted in
without changing the story. Michael was always keen to get more than just a
gorilla in the comic which is why a few of the added pages featured things like
what was happening elsewhere at the time such as in Ape City, the 'Escapeonauts'
blasting off and things like that.
Neil
I've always ment to ask Neil , how did you
work with Michael and Dave on Beast ?
Did you get a "full" script with panel break downs,
dialogue and directions or was it more of a plot which you did the
break downs and visual pacing and then go back to Michael to discuss and work
out the final dialogue, captions after the pages were penciled
?
Did some scenes get added at a latter stage ?

With latter strips like "With-in" I take it you worked with Michael on the plot more before you started drawing?
I seem to remember that there was a number of things you wanted to draw from the start?
It is fascinating how the process of making a comic strip comes about, it's not as easy as some assume. (Just look at a copy of Previews to see how many bad comics are
published each month)
As you said, Michael as the writer, can be "Forgotten" which is great shame. (I know i've done it myself.) but the process is a collaboration.
I sure when working on the latter stuff you were looking for ways to streamline the process... forinstance cutting down on re-drawing?
(I've just read a quote from Kirby where he's supposed to have said "Every time you erase you lose money" now I know there was no money ...but you know what I mean
)
It seems there was alot of different approaches on the strips and y
ou both went through a number of methods on each of them was their one which suited you both more than another?
(As I say just random thoughts of the top of my head... I'd stop at the rough break down stage if I was doing it !!! of course no one would be able to tell what was
going on just a lot of marks and lines but the pages would have a lot of energy !!!

a description of what was to happen in the panel. I would then try to leave
enough 'dead' spaces in the panel for any dialog balloons / boxes.
There were
occasions when reviewing the completed pages I found that Ballard had placed
text over parts of the art that I felt should not be covered and I recommended
an alternative place in the panel for it and had him move
it.

that saved a lot of time was the decision not to ink the new strips and just use
the pencils. The first 4 or 5 pages of Going Home were inked but none of the
pages after that and it saved a huge amount of time (and also saved my ink
supplies!)
I am now also
doing all of the lettering myself which takes a fair amount of time and effort
and probably uses up any time that I saved by not inking!

the method we eventually ended up using which became a lot easier when we

Basically we came

thing and added Michael's text. We then reviewed the pages and changed anything

.html Saw this today! Seems like a strange worls this original prop
collecting thing. A Bit like the number of "original Roddy costumes"
that seem to be about. Lee Hemstock is a premier ape fan and is
totally into POTA so this is a bit strange!
What do you think?
Planet of the Apes Statue of Liberty Prop - Update
By jdebord | December 17, 2007
As discussed previously (see "Planet of the Apes Statue of Liberty
Prop"), a Statue of Liberty prop head - attributed to use in Planet
of the Apes (1968) - was consigned with Profiles in History (where it
failed to sell) and, subsequently, Heritage Auction Galleries (where
it was pulled prior to auction).
This piece has generated much discussion in the hobby, yet many
questions remain unanswered.
Les Hemstock purportedly consigned the Statue of Liberty piece to
Profiles in History for their Hollywood Auction 28, held August 2-3,
2007.
In the last article, I posted a series of files (images and text)
that were circulating among collectors, which illustrated an
extensive restoration and reconstruction of the piece. Even assuming
the piece is original and was from the production (which has not been
publicly proven), those elements which would have been seen on screen
(the back of the head and the spikes), per these files, they appear
to be replicas (the spikes) or not exist (the back of the head).
This update is to provide additional facts and information.
As noted in the last article, Mr. Hemstock had started a topic under
his "ansanaut" alias on the Movie Prop Forum to address public
concerns from other hobbyists about items offered for sale through
his kcotsmeh ("Hemstock" spelled backwards) eBay account. The Movie
Prop Forum topic was titled: "PROP COLLECTORS!". Another topic
directly related to the Statue of Liberty prop was titled: "PIH
Auction whatsit?"
With his own "PROP COLLECTORS!" topic, Mr. Hemstock identified
himself and had posted a scan of a print feature published in
SciFiNow magazine (about himself and his collection), but deleted the
file after the discussion got underway. I did recall it had a photo
of the Statue of Liberty prop, but failed to save the file before he
deleted it.
SciFiNow Magazine Online Discussion Forum
I did find a topic started by Mr. Hemstock, under the same Movie Prop
Forum alias of "ansanaut", on the SciFiNow Magazine discussion forums.

I found this topic while cleaning out
my posts. The question of whether Paula Crist could've played a background ape
in "Battle", and the fine line of "playing an ape" meaning a speaking role. I
mentioned this fine line to Bill Blake and he said No, she did NOT play an ape
of any stripe in any of the movies or TV show. He lived with her and saw all of
her pictures. There's plenty of her as the human (as seen in "Simian Scrolls")
but she had not one picture of her as an ape on the set. Bill says if she did it
she would've had the pictures.
Anyway, since I came across this post, I
thought I'd finish this topic. Jeff

What I was getting at is this: When she met Arthur, he was impressed
enough to offer her a role in BATTLE... When time for filming came along,
Arthur was sick so she wasn't just a shoe in... The casting director
didn't give her a speaking role as an ape (or a human for that matter)
because she lacked the SAG card...
She was an ape, albeit a background
extra (who did not speak). That's why I kept trying to differentiate between a
background ape as being a non-speaking role. A non-speaking role equates to no
need for a SAG card because you're technically not "acting", you're a
prop/atmosphere piece.

Yes, Bill says she's lying (though I don't
know why anyone would bother to lie about being a background ape). After all the
time they spent living together (in the POTA business, no less) I think Bill
would know something about this.
It's possible she didn't take a picture, but
if that was her career goal (to be an ape in a POTA movie) I doubt
it.
