.html Yeah, thats what is posted on the Forbidden Zone sight. It's probably tied up
with the reamke. I figure the publisher may want to hold off and wait for
the new film. Just speculating, who knows what will happen. I do however have
a bone to pick with these guys. The original issue of Sci-Fi Universe
magazine printed excerpts from the book back in 1993. They even had an
address to send $15.95 to for a copy. I sent the check, got a cancelled check
back, but no book. The nerve! <.html

Not bad Alan,
My birthday is on the 29th of June.

Five little days....
And now it's on for July 27th.
Sure blew that idea right out of the water!

in my mid 40s. I've gone APE since the 70s when they first came out, and
have loved them ever since. I especially liked AMCs APE day last year,
where Roddy hosted the shows and the making of. Then I'd heard he'd died.
I always thought he was a great actor, whether Apes, comedy or other dramas.
It was like part of me had died too. I really enjoyed his work, especially
as Cornelius.

It was on Sunday or Saturday, I forgot which, I missed it. Supposedly, they
showed some clips of the original series, showed the differences between the
old and new make-up, etc. I can't believe I missed it, I'M SO DISSAPOINTED!
Did anyone catch it, or did anyone else at least hear about it? I want to
know what else was on it that I missed...?
Ross (Dr. Milo)
P.S. Happy B-day to Lynne, and a big welcome to any newcomers.
P.P.S. Is it me, or am I the only young person on this list? Please,
nobody take offense to this, but I consider people in their thirties pretty
old. Am I alone? :)

Dude don't say that, please don't say that.
I can't believe that I missed it too, I've got to start looking out for
these segments. Hopefuly E! channel or ET might have something coming up,
perhaps Fox E as well.
If I catch anything I'll post it on the site.

Eghad! I've worn the Gorilla get-up in that kind of heat before! Yuck!
Gorillas are the hottest and most layered outfits. Tonight was much more
comfortable (50's) here in earthquake country (Northridge, CA).
People do love the APES. We had a really great response from everyone we
interacted with. One kid asked me if I was King Kong, which was funny. I told
him "no", but some of my lady-apes friends have been known to call me that!
Apey Halloween to everyone in the ring!

| Subject: Frederick S. Clarke/CINEFANTASTIQUE |
|
.html Hi--
I just posted this to the B-FILM group, at EGROUPS, but thought this
might be of interest to some of you here, as well.
CINEFANTASTIQUE Magazine--along with movies ike the APES series,, of
course--was part of my mid-1970s exploration of, a "sense of wonder"--
As I suspect the magazine was, for others here, as well.
(To this day--remarkably, nearly THIRTY YEARS later--CFQ's special
PLANET OF THE APES issue--with a particularly nifty long-shot of Heston
and Harrison, at APES' climactic shoreline, on its cover--remains one
of the only sources of information, on the tetralogy.)
I wish, of course, that there had been no need to write the following,
at all...
________________
Last week, when I first read here, in a post, that Fred Clarke, the
publisher/edtor of CINEFANTASTIQUE, had passed away-- I was stunned.
'And hoped it was just one of those stupid "internet mistakes..."
But it bugged me.
A lot.
And because I didn't want to inadvertantly start a rumor by calling a
few of our mutual acquaintances, I did an internet search, for any info.
Nothing was coming up when it dawned on me that, had Fred died, there
would have been an obituary in THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE.
(CINEFANTASTQUE was centered in a Chicago suburb.)
I checked the TRIB, and, sadly, Fred's obit was there...
I don't know if it's possible for today's fantasy film fans to totally
gleem how important CINEFANTASTIQUE was to the history of the genre.
Today, virtually anything and everything you want to know about
movies--not to mention anything else--is just a mouse-click away.
Even before the internet revolution, book store magazine shelves were
filled with several mags on both the current scene, and the history, of
fantasy and horror flicks.
But in the early '70s, there was just about nothing.
Nothing for adults, anyway.
At least, adults interested in in-depth coverage of films of the
fantastic.
And nothing on a regular basis.
(CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN, Cal Beck's wondrous, strange newsprint magazine
was--to this day--the only monster mag that was as likley to have a
counterculture diatribe, as a look at the latest horror starlet, but it
was published irregulary...
(THE MONSTER TIMES, published in a still-unqiue newspaper/tabloid
format, was similarly hip, and fun, but hedged its bets by retaining a
bit of FAMOUS MONSTERS' youthful approach... There was nothing wrong
with that--in fact, for quite a while, iit was a terrific, combination!)
And then, CINEFANTASTIQUE appeared.
Slick, on glossy paper, with beautiful photo reproduction, and
professional journalism standards--
CFQ was really the first mag devoted strictly to science fiction and
fantasy, that, on a regular basis, provided fascinating, in-depth.
articles, with interviews, on the making of the genre's classics.
AND included--and was the ONLY magazine to do so, for many years--full
previews, of upcoming movies.
In the mid-70s, when I discovered the mag, literally, as a kid--
It was a thrilling moment!
And until at least 1980, the magazine remained the BEST source for the
field.
(And, if the editors of STARLOG and FANGORIA, are honest, one of the
places that they also looked to for information--in addition to VARIETY
and THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, in the earliest days of their mags...)
CFQ may have lost its way at some point in the early '80s, when, for a
while, it became too much of a special fects mag, but it was always a
first-class enterprise.
And some of CINEFANTASTIQUE'S "theme" issues of the '90s, were better
book-length looks at their subjects, then many actual books, published
on the same themes!
I don't know how much CFQ ultmately influenced the SF/FANTASY magazine
biz.
STARLOG (and, hence FANGORIA), probably would have been published
anyway, since STARLOG started--oddly enough--as a one-off STAR TREK
magazine, from an outfit that had
been doing soap opera publications.
Other mags would inevitably have come along...
But I DO KNOW that many of today's top filmmakers were heavily
influenced by CINEFANTASTIQUE, and the education they helped get, from
its pages.
And the point is, CFQ was there first--and its mark of quality, endured
far longer than that of most similar magazines.
I wrote for Fred Clarke only once, when he bought an article that had
originally been done for ESQUIRE (and which ESQUIRE had to bump when the
movie that it was about, was released AHEAD of schedule!).
We talked a few other times during the years, usually when he called to
see if I would do a piece for one of his magazines.
Sadly, I didn't have the time.
But I always found Fred a fun, and nice guy, to chat with, on the phone.
(Remarkably, someone just told me that Dan Scapperotti, a contributor to
CFQ almost from the beginning, also had never met Fred in person... All
of their correspondence was by phone, mail, and later, I suspect,
EMAIL...)
I was amazed to read in THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE, that Fred was only 51.
Which means he was only in his early twenties, when doing
CINEFANTASTQUE's earliest issues.
'All of which, of course, makes Fred's achievement, even more
remarkable!
But, what haunts me, is that I hope Fred knew, at the end, how important
his creaton had been, for so many years. to so many people.
I'm pretty sure I shared those sentiments, with him, during one of our
phone calls, years ago.
I just wish I could be sure.
If I remember correctly, Fred was a little embarrassed by the
compliment.
I hope he also knew, of course, that the compliment was true.
CINEFANTASTIQUE will REMAIN a milestone--
In the genre that, here, obviously, all of us hold so dear.

Army Archerd's column in "Variety" comes up with some good stuff. He was
Arthur Jacobs' friend and had cameos in most of the "Apes" (notably as the
boxing referee in "Escape"). This week he mentioned the Heston cameo in the
new "Apes" and that shooting begins Nov. 6 in Paige, Arizona (that's Monday,
site of where the original began). Despite all the talk about a new take, it
sounds like they're throwing the fans a few bones. Remember when Heston said
he'd never play an ape (during the rumors that he would play Dr. Zauis)?
Remember when Zanuck said there was no role for Heston? The more things
change, the more they stay the same. Whoever convinced Heston should win the
Nobel Peace Prize.
Happy Birthday, Lynne! Your e-mails don't look a day over 30. My birthday
is Nov. 8, so if shooting gets postponed a couple days that's fine with me.
I won't say my age but I'm old enough to call "Star Wars" fans
"whippersnappers"!
Mark , I'm so glad to hear your tests turned out OK. Welcome back!
Brian, this dressing up like apes has to stop! When are you going to start

Dreamworks: I don't think there's a chance they're involved. Fox wants
"Apes" for themselves. I think that's even the reason they canned James
Cameron. But Zanuck has signed a deal with Dreamworks for after "Apes".
New Release Date: The move to July 27 is interesting. A big movie like
that needs the summer to make back it's money. At that point they will only
have August. However that takes them out of the pathway of "Jurassic Park
3", which I hear is scheduled for July 4. Any way you look at it, it's going
to be a brutal summer. If they get pushed back any farther they'll have to
move to Christmas '01 or Summer '02.
"POTA Revisited": Yes, it's planned for July 2001 from St. Martin's Press.
Joe Russo called Natalie Trundy first to announce publication since she's
been helping his research since '84. I was there when he called her so he
told us both at the same time. At first it was going to be hardcover but now
they're leaning toward softcover, which Joe is trying to fight.

Yeah,
I'd have to agree with Brian, it all comes down to budget.
It's a shame the films budget went down following the original, in this day
and age they go up. So what was 20th Century Fox thinking about?
There's an old saying, it takes money to make money.
And I believe that was one of the reasons for Beneath's low numbers at the
box office. But still a favorite film for me simply because it's the last
you see of the future ape world in the series.
Damn shame.

| Subject: Suckey Sequels |
.htmlAs a kid, because of the poor sequel quality of the APES saga, I was soured to
the idea of sequels for any film. APES seemed to set a standard of "cheaper
and cheaper" that left theatre going audiences feeling cheated, rather than
entertained by the follow-up films. I remember being in High School and just
dreading any sort of sequel to any film, all because of the precedent the APES
series set.
It wasn't until the incredible success of the ROAD WARRIOR, that I think film
makers woke up and realized that if you put a little effort (and $) into
sequels, that you might actually turn out a good product that people will want
to see.
WRATH of KAHN, ALIENS, and TERMINATOR 2 were also great examples of
successful sequels with a quality that shows.
So nowadays, budget does not seem to be an issue for sequals. Look at the
production value of the Batman movies.
Unfortunately Hollywood was going through such a depression back in the late
60's that the major studios were demolishing their back lots and selling off
the great historical lands to developers. It's kindof sickening, but they had
to do what they thought best to keep afloat. It just sucks that all those
great sets are gone "with the wind", so to speak, and now have condos or
office buildings standing in their place.
Anyway, enuff grumbling...
I just think it would be nice to visit a place like MGM (now SONY) and be able
to walk around some great Hollywood history that is now only that, ...history.

.html It's not so bad,
There's a lot of possible explanations one can come up with for the
"Taylor Dissapearance." Some are not so unreasonable, there are other, more
prominent mistakes. Upon watching the dvd last night (for the first time) I
noticed a couple things. General Ursus clearly tells Dr. Zaius in the sauna
type room that 12 of his scouts went out into the forbidden zone, and only 1
returned. Yet, in the scene where those supposed 11 scouts are being
crucified upside down by the law giver, there appears to be a lot more than
11 gorillas. If you pause it at the right time, I counted up to actually 15
of them, so there's a slip right there. I know it's picky, but it just
shows what happens when for the sequel, you reduce the budget by almost 1/2
of the first, which wasn't large to begin with anyways.
Ross (Dr. Milo)
P.S. I noticed something kind of funny too. As Brent and Nova are dragged
into the compound, before General Ursus says they're marked for target
practice. Watch Zira working on that human laying down on the table, legs
spread apart. What exactly IS she doing...? :)

Or even so, if Fox would open a theme park like Universal Studios.
And apes being one of the attractions.
I believe WB Studios will be the next theme park here in Florida with all of
those looney toons as their icons. I only hope Fox would get into it as

Yeah, that makes sence.
Which come to think about it, Brent's encounter with Taylor was a quick one,
seeing that Taylor is pretty much well shaven when they meet face to face.
Poor Brent, he didn't even have time to play hubby with Nova.
I never really did see Beneath as a B movie, and if it is, it's the best B
movie I've ever seen. B movies are normaly very poorly acted and there
wasn't a moment of poor acting in this film.

Glad you liked it, soon I'll have all of these tunes on the site in "MP3
Stereo" for all to download and convert to a CD themselves.
But for now burn the hell out it if you like.
It's just a fan project, with more to come in the future.

That's cool, I'm glad you and M are alright, I remember you were going on

thought you might of come home from vaction to find no home!

I find one of the most interesting "side effects" of POTA is that it
seems to spark a creative urge in many of it's fans.
Even if I hated the CD I'd still appreciate the hard work that went
into it's production. The same goes for Mark Gould's fantastic
preview of his novel in progress.

I found it disappointing, but still engaging. It's interesting though, many
years later and many series later, that I want the same thing I always did
from an apes sequel - MORE of that wonderful world we see in the first
movie. I don't really feel like we see more of it in Beneath and drives me
to WHAT WOULD I DO ?. I don't have a big detailed outline my head, but the
general answers are there.
I'd see more of the city, other cities, more faucets of the culture and
allow Taylor a safe haven ( temporarily of course ), maybe with other
intelligent humans, ones that could interact with the apes, even safe apes
that could give him a home.More Zira and Cornelius, more Zaius. I'd include
mutated animals for thrills and allow Taylor to investigate this future
world in detail. The more weirdness the better.
I don't really want to ponder what I'd do with a sequel now, I have dinner

Well, in the case of adding instead of taking away, I would add a few
things.
1> Zira & Cornelius being cleared of all charges.
2> Zaius showing Cornelius the sacret scrolls that he later explains in
Escape.
3> Zira, Cornelius and Milo encountering Taylor's Ship.
So I would add, but not take away.

.html As some already know,
I have written a novel revolving around a trial for heresy, and an
exploration of the world that the apes exist within. I too wanted more of
the world to see.
So i wrote it myself.
The novel is finished, and is being polished for the final draft. someone is
also looking at contacting Fox about it for me. There are some who have read
parts (including a published top novelist) and they all concur, with one
notable exception, that it really is worth the candle.
Sadly, every mention on this list of such a thing is ignored (as has been
commented on by some subscribing to this list privately). Now if it had talk
of Gorillas bits...
It ain't no peice of fan fic.

Well personally I'm in the camp that wouldn't alter the film. However, since
we're talking hypothetically here, here's a few things that I wouldn't have
minded seeing:
* Not so much more of the ape world, since I think we saw that in Beneath,
but definitely more of the culture and society.
* What actually happened between Cornelius, Zira and Zaius - the hearing or
whatever.
* And how about Milo while we're at it!
* More of the Sacred Scrolls and what they mean to the apes
More intelligent humans is a no-no in my book (except those lovable mutants,
obviously). This would take the film in a different direction that I don't
think would be a good one. Part of the reason Escape is my least favourite
is that there are too many humans and not enough apes.

The story, the script, the performances, the directing - plenty of other
ideas of how to trash the remake!

Well, I'm not going to start the fan fic debate again, but I think you're
being a bit harsh in saying that it's being ignored. I seem to recall some
discussion about it when you posted the preview here - and since that's all
we have to go on it's hard to keep a discussion going on it.
If you want to tell us more about it, send another extract or whatever, I'm
more than happy to comment on it.
