I think if mlccougar wants to call the new film a joke he has every right to,
and you have every right to just ignore him.

Yes, let's all play nice.  A little gibe now and then doesn't hurt.  Remember
Pete Harrison?   Escape from the Planet of the POTA Egroup.  That was funny.

I saw the big cardboard standee version of the poster.
It looked pretty cool. No trailer though. I went to see
Enemy at the Gates and being Paramout so were the trailers.
Did anyone else get the feeling this was yet another good movie
ruined by Hollywood. I saw the story on the History Channel.
And they had these two master snipers stroling around, chatting,
Smoking ciggies in the field, having visitors and sex!
How could these two guys not find each other?
Why didn't the kid just tell him yeah he'll be here when I shine his boots.

I liked "Enemy at the Gates."  Sure, it had it's problems, but it was pretty
grim and tense at times, and I actually liked the Horner score, and I usually
don't like Horner.  The love triangle story was no "Dr. Zhivago" that's for
sure.  Ron Perlman was good as usual.  Remember him in "Quest for Fire" and
"The Name of the Rose"?  The guy needs no makeup.  He actually looked better
as the Beast in TV's "Beauty and the Beast" than he does in real life.

This also means they've only got 100 days left to do the CGI effects, looping
and foley effects, final sound mix including the score, oh, and I forgot the
editing of the film itself, then the prints that need to be made.

Does it sound to you like they're going to be rushed?  It does to me.  If it
meant getting a better movie, I wouldn't care if they didn't open the movie
until Thanksgiving.

Well, I'm going to have to escape from this e-group come the end of June -- I
don't want too much of the new film spoiled for me during the month of July.
Actually, I go on vacation for the first two weeks of July, and I'll be
nowhere near a computer.

Hey Mez,

How's the weather there in England?  Warming up yet?  Nice and warm here in
Florida, but dry.  We need some of the rain you Brits get plenty of.

The seller has over 3,000 feedbacks w/ only about 3 negatives. But ask questions BEFORE bidding!
I would think that Roddy probably would have known it wasn't a pic of him but would probably been too polite to point that out to the autograph hound at the time. it looks like an original still. Usually those publicity stills w/ text at the bottom identify the actor/s in the shot. Pity it wasn't autographed by Watson, I probably would have bid on it. I already have Roddy's autograph.

Can I ask both you guys if there was any reason for either of these remarks?

I am really starting to yawn here at both of you.  We KNOW what you think, and I hope we are not having a competition now to see how many different ways (and times) you are going to state it.

This is exactly the sort of thing we need to establish ground rules for and I must say that if it were up to me you would both be on your last warning before asking you both to depart.

Subject: A book POTA fans should read.
.html
.htmlHey Gang,

I don't know why I haven't mentioned this book before, but I'm doing so now.

It's "The Studio" by John Gregory Dunne.  It was published in 1968 and here's
what's said about it at Amazon.com where it sells for only $11.20.

"In 1967, John Gregory Dunne asked for unlimited access to the inner workings
of Twenteith Century Fox.  Meraculously, he got it.  For one year Dunne went
everywhere there was to go and talked to everyone worth talking to within the
studio.  He tracked every step of the creation of pictures like "Dr.
Dolittle," "Planet of the Apes," and "The Boston Strangler."  The result is a
work of reportage that, thirty years later, may still be our most minutely
observed and therefore most uproariously funny portrait of the motion picture
business.

"Whether he is recounting a showdown between Fox's studio head and two suave
shark-like agents, watching a producer's girlfriend steal a silver plate from
a restaurant, or shielding his eyes against the glare of a Hollywood premiere
where the guests include a chimp in a white tie and tails, Dunne captures his
subject in all its showmanship, savvy, vulgarity, and hype.

"'Reads as racily as a novel...(Dunne) has a novelist's ear for speech and
eye for revealing detail...Anyone who has tiptoed along those corridors of
power is bound to say Dunne's impressionism rings true.'-- Los Angeles Times"

Here's an excerpt about "Planet of the Apes"....

"That afternoon, Richard Zanuck watched the previous day's rushes of 'Planet
of the Apes.'  The scene showed an ape doctor giving a blood transfusion.
The recipient was Charlton Heston, the donor Linda Harrison, who played Nova,
the mute Earth Girl.  In angle after angle, the ape fastened the tube between
the arms of the two Earth people.

"'You don't give a transfusion that way,' Owen McLean said in the darkness of
the projection room.  'You take blood out of one arm first, then pump it into
the other arm.  You can't make blod flow from arm to arm like that.'

"'He's right, Dick,' Stan Hough said.

"Zanuck was unperturbed.  'What the hell,' he said.  'Maybe that's how an ape
does it.'"

I first read this book way back in the early Seventies.  I read it again a
couple years ago.  I highly recommend it to you all.   Check it out.

Okay, that's true. I'm not saying it was a bad movie. I'm just saying it
was a good movie, that was ruined by Hollywood. I'm sure no matter how good
the new Apes might turn out, it will not get by unscathed.

Yeah, yeah, rub it in. But look, you don't have to escape entirely.
Just change your delivery options to 'view on web' and don't read the

The only thing concerning me is when we're likely to see the movie
released over here. After living in L.A. for 8 years I'm spoiled and
can't stand the delays.

Well Rory,I did see his little reply.I did say his blind devotion to an
unseen movie IS a joke, but I made no personal attack on him like he seems to
think he is entitled to do at me.I'll let his little comment go this time, but
if he starts with me,it will mean the war has begun. But I don't expect it to
continue as a personal fued between Alex and myself.I'm sure I will continue
with my little comments as I'm sure he will too.

Face it,what we have with Alex and me are the two extremes in this camp.He is
totally devoted to it,I am totally against it.I'm sure we will never see eye

Alan Trachtenberg (Hope I got the name right) On the TV in the waiting room
is "The Nanny". I'm listing out of the corner of my ear. She talking about
some other nanny. I look up. She's reading a newspaper saying words to the
effect "She's some high-priced Park Avenue nanny with way too much time on
her hands." She suddenly looks intently at the newspaper and says in that
beautiful accent "Oh! Planet of the Apes is on at 4 o'clock!" After I we get
back from the doctors, I go to the neighborhood hang out for a quick beer. I
walk in, The Simpsons are on and they're parodying The Hunt. POTA sure was in
the air today. John

Yes - please stop making figures, Medicom. I'm broke.

And why two TV series apes? Could have had some mutants or a Brent
up in this, instead we get those guys.

Fair enough.

As Ken said, I probably should have sent that last one privately, but I want to be sure Alex gets the message too (so yes I should have sent a CC to him).

Here's hoping we can get back on track.

Yes, that's exactly the sorts of questions I want - thank you! Keep 'em
rolling.

I'll also be asking for some test models and loose figures for photos (but I
really have all the photos I need - I just wanna play with one!!).

I'd still wouldn't mind having (at least):

1. Deluxe figure with a gorilla on top of a horse.
2. Honorius
3. Brent
4. Beneath mutants
5. Virgil
6. Julius
7.Kulp
8. Burke
9. Virdon
10.Dodge
11. Landon

And if you really want to break your wallet, how about Medicom doing their
version of the classic 12" line?

Subject: Medicoms Reviewed - Variants
.html
Yes,

The variants are all very unique in their representation.

For example, the Cornelius is in line with Mego variants where they ran out
of a certain costume fabric and therefore made a variant Gorilla Jacket or
mistakenly put two similar looking gorillas on each other's card.

The Cornelius could have been simply because they ran out of green! And
speaking of such, I received my Cornelius "Brown" variant yesterday and I
must say it looks more a dark green - his right arm is VERY brown but the
rest looks like a single coat over-spray (and not a very good one). Anyone
had a similar or opposite experience?

Also, if the Cornelius is an intended variant and not just an error, why no
sticker to identify this? Or was the use of a sticker to identify further
variants due to the Brown Cornelius going unnoticed?

The next variant was more obvious - different head and gun. How many were
made? I think at a guess a lot more than the later variants.

And the last variants - seems to me there was again a different approach -
maybe the thought that this is the only way we will see more figures
represented....who knows? But before the company goes belly up and the
decision makers die of old age (as with the vintage POTA I collect - so many
unanswered questions!!!!!), I intend to find out.

Michael

Thanks Shelby, I agree.

An anyone else add to this list?

Frankly, I would love to see a set of the 3 Orangutans (one of which is
Honorius I believe, is that right Shelby?) in a deluxe pack with the table
and the "See No/Hear No" pose! Or even just all 3 by themselves and not
posing - I just dig the intense glyphs on those costumes!

Also, the Orang played by Paul Williams in Battle (sorry Rory - hey, you can
use it for target practise OK?).

And the mutants - well they made it to the Kubrick figures line up so they
were thinking of them. Maybe they are waiting to do a deluxe removable mask
version - we can only hope!

Anyone else want to add?

Michael

FYI guys,

I was at a KayBee's the other day and they have Statue of Liberty playsets
from the Xmen on clearance for $5 (I believe that was the price). There is
one of the head and one of the arm. A little small for the apes figures
probably, but I thought it wouldn't be bad to pick them up and do a lot
custom work to make a complete damaged Statue of Liberty for a background
diorama. For $5 each how can you go wrong? Sorry if this is been discussed
already :)

Shelby and Michael,

Those are all great suggestions. How about the following:

Young Cornelius from BATTLE
Young Gorilla from PLANET
Orangutan Slave from CONQUEST
Dr. Galen from PLANET
Galen from TV
Lisa from CONQUEST and BATTLE
Lawgiver from BATTLE
Dr. Milo in regular outfit from ESCAPE
Cornelius and Zira in human clothes from ESCAPE
Orangutan Priest from PLANET
Dr. Zaius from TV
Dr. Zaius in riding outfit from BENEATH
Soldier Apes with "V" and "I I" on armor from TV

That's all I can think of off the top of my head (in addition to Shelby's and
Michael's suggestions). I must admit that my top requests would be Julius,
Maximus and Honorius.

What's going on? I hope we don't keep getting these emails until you return
on the 24th. It could cause the whole list to pull a Pete Harrison.
