John, you forgot the chimpanzee court stenographer. Also, it wasn't the
high tribunal.... it was the ad hoc Tribunal of the National Academy. And,
Dr. Honorius was Deputy Minister of Justice.
As for Medicoms we didn't get.... well I'm fairly satisfied. What I'd like
to see is more and better resin kits. Like a kit of the Tribunal at their
desk striking the 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' pose. Or a kit
of those three gorilla hunters 'smiling' as they get their picture took with
the one in the middle with his foot on a pile of dead men. YEAH!!! That
would be cool!
Did anybody else here get the Icarus spaceship kit from Monstersinmotion.com?
It's $100, but it's worth it. I also have the smaller Skyhook kit.
They're both cool.

Yeah, I have both of those kits also. The Monsters In Motion one is
sensational. My only complaint is that there are no rockets at the back
and the hibernation bunks are included. But the sculpt and interior

sensational. My only complaint is that there are no rockets at the back
and the hibernation bunks are included. But the sculpt and interior
detail are the best yet.
Best,
KEN
Well, you know I'm really not sure that there should be rockets in the back.
I have a theory and it goes like this....
Obviously there was more to Taylor's ship. Remember in the movie that just
before we see the water start to spray into the cabin from the rear hatchway
door we hear this loud screeching sound? My theory is that this was the
sound of the back half of the ship breaking away and sinking, much as the
Titanic broke in half as it went down. That left the rear door (which would
be airtight and therefore watertight) ruptured enough to begin to let the sea
in.
It would make little sense if there were rockets at the very back of Taylor's
ship as we have with the Monters in Motion resin kit. Where would their fuel
supply come from, and wouldn't they be just too damn near the crew's cabin?
The noise and vibration would be horrible.
Also, if we are to except that Dr. Milo salvaged Taylor's ship (which really
needs a lot of 'suspension of disbelief'), then he must have also recovered a
booster portion of the ship in order to relaunch it into orbit so that the
three chimpanzees could go to.... Oh, yeah...We don't know where they were
going, do we?
Anyway, Ken, I was also a little disappointed with the interior, but how did
you paint your Icarus Monsters in Motion kit? I painted mine with a white
auto paint that gives a very hard surface when it dries, but unfortunately I
did it with a brush, so the surface isn't smooth as it would if I had spray
painted it, but I had no area to spray paint in. But it looks good from a
distance. I also didn't add the scorching burns from re-entry. I wanted the
model clean. The American Flag decals aren't big enough, did you notice?
And if you look at the ship in the movie, there are flags on both sides of
the stabilizer rockets. It was also hard to get the right shade of olive
green for the area in front of the windows, but I think I eventually did
pretty good.
The biggest pain I had with this kit, though, was the amount of filling I had
to do on the nose cone to get it to fit right. For some reason they made it
too wide. Also, I painted the nose cone white. They tell you it should be
brass, and if you look at the movie, the model ship shown sinking does have a
brass nose cone. But I think they must have changed their minds with the
full scale prop ship. The nose cone looks either white or possibly silver,
but it's so covered with scorching it's hard to tell.
With the Skyhook model I painted it to look just like the ship in the film,
scorching and all, though again I painted the nose cone white. I also built
up around the base of the ship where it meets the water, drops of glue and
white paint so you get the look of the bubbling water around the ship.
They were fun kits to do.

I've never gotten any of the Apemania resin kits. I don't know why. I guess
I'm just not too into busts. They look good though.
I've been meaning to bring this up. I've bought two of the Medicom Lawgivers
because I want to try and paint one of them to look more like the movie.
Now, in the film the Lawgiver statue looks like it's supposed to be made of
marble. Does anyone here have any ideas how to create a marble effect with
model paints?

Previews for tomorrows show.
They
say new apes scenes, but they always discribe it as scenes, (meaning trailer)
Also the new trailer comes out on Friday so it's no surprise they'll show the

.html Yeah, your theory is probably right Rory and does make sense. I didn't
actually build my model, I had my sister-in-law build it for me ( under
my supervision). She's an amazing model maker and has worked in a hobby
store for 20 years. We sat with the video on pause just to make sure we
had the scorching and re-entry burns all in the exact places. We did the
nose silver. We had a hell of a time w/ the lettering decals and had to
use lettraset ( of all things) instead. My sister-in-law has an amazing
inventory of model pits and pieces including decals, so we could put all
4 U.S flags on using decals from some other kit.
The fit of the cone was tough and did require a lot of work. The cuss
words I learned that day!
I'm pretty much an annoying perfectionist, especially when I'm not the
one doing the building.
It all quite easily could have ended in tears.
Mine.
The finished ship looks fantastic. I've also had her repaint all seven
of the figural Addar kits. My original efforts look like they'd been
painted with a tooth brush. She has also painted a need Cornelius
"bobbing head" resin kit and a really nice Urko bust. After the first
Icarus model, I didn't even bother getting the Skyhooks version built.
As nice as it is.
A while back there was some posts ( or it may have been on Terry Hoknes'
site) about some really nicely detailed Resin kits of the Astro-apes and
Caesar from "Conquest". Anyone got or seen these?

.html A few days ago Rory posted the first five or so pages of Pierre Boulle's
Planet of the Men Script which contained a scene about Taylor and Nova
discovering a tribe of humans and Taylor swearing to help man rise again. I
am going to move the story along for those who are interested (but not type
the whole script).
The next scene takes place four years later. Zaius and Maximus are concerned
about chimpanzees that are demonstrating about the imprisonment of Zira and
Cornelius. Lucius is leading the demonstration. Zaius blames Taylor for the
whole thing. Eventually the gorilla police break up the proceedings. Maximus
comments on their loyalty, Zaius on their stupidity.
Eventually Zaius has Cornelius and Zira brought to him. He hopes to convince
them not to publicly admit that their errors, just to keep quiet about what
they know about man. Cornelius and Zira refuse. Zaius then reveals that his
spies have learned of several large bands of humans in the Forbidden Zone.
Zaius ordered a raid, in hopes that Taylor will be killed in the process.
The next scene is a flashback of the raid. The gorilla beaters make a
tremendous noise as they raid the humans (only with clubs, no firearms).
Taylor is seen successfully ordering the men around and getting them to
behave in an orderly fasion. Taylor stops them and threatens them with a
rifle and even shoots one of the gorillas in the arm. Nova is seen carrying a
baby. The gorilla's retreat and tell their leader that "The-man-who-talks" is
there.
Cut back to Zaius' office. Zira and Cornelius are grateful that the raid was
unsuccessful, but Zaius asks how Zira is going to continue her medical
experiments if men cannot be captured. Zira just shrugs. Zaius then shows
them another report.
Cut to another flashback of Taylor, Nova, young Sirius (their son) and other
men around a fire. Nova and Sirius speak.
Cut back to Zaius's office again. As they finish reading the report Zaius
appeals to the chimps about the possible consequences of this disturbing
information. Cornelius and Zira are speechless. Zaius frees them both.
The next scene takes place ten years later....but we'll get to that
later......

.html .htmlHere's some of Boulle's 'brilliant' dialogue in the scene four years later
between Zaius and Maximus.
MAXIMUS
The situation has done nothing but
deteriorate over the last four years.
Ever since the appearance of that man
Taylor . . .
ZAIUS
That monster with a human face and the
language of apes, who has caused grave
defection amongst weak spirits like Zira
and Cornelius. Their arrest hasn't done
any good. It's the nephew of Zira, that
imbecile Lucius, who now propogates
heresies and madness.
MAXIMUS
Why don't you have him arrested too?
ZAIUS
They would find another to take his place.
Uproar grows outside. Zaius and Maximus look out of the window again. A
group of mounted gorilla police are in the middle of charging the
demonstrators.
MAXIMUS
Brave gorillas. Happily they keep
a cool head. They are completely
loyal.
ZAIUS
Loyal and stupid. Their truncheon
blows only end by provoking more
riots, which recommence within the
hour.
Yikes!!! Calling the script doctor!!!

I went to a Frightvision Con the other weekend and they had a couple of nice
resin kits. Dr. Milo in astronaut outfit as a bust, and they also had an
awesome gorilla soldier astride a horse with his rifle held up over his
head. I think that one was supposed to look like the gorilla at the
beginning credits of the television series. He was holding his rifle just
like that. Cool as heck, and I'm kicking myself now for not having gotten
it!

Well, I'm going to have
to escape from this e-group come the end of June -- I don't want too much
of the new film spoiled for me during the month of July. Actually,
I go on vacation for the first two weeks of July, and I'll be nowhere near
a computer.
Hey Mez,
How's the weather there in England?
Warming up yet? Nice and warm here in Florida, but dry.
We need some of the rain you Brits get plenty of.

This never came out. It was a prototype that was seen in pictures, but they
replaced it with the gorilla soldier with the "M" on his chest. I suppose you
could make one if you got an old GI Joe jumpsuit and dyed it the right color.
The one with the brown outfit was an online exclusive. I kind of like it.

This also means they've only got 100 days left to
do the CGI effects, looping and foley effects, final sound mix including the
score, oh, and I forgot the editing of the film itself, then the prints that
need to be made.
Does it sound to you like they're going to be rushed?
It does to me. If it meant getting a better movie, I wouldn't
care if they didn't open the movie until Thanksgiving.
I think it would be best to leave the film
making to the film makers.
I trust they know what there doing

Subject: [pota] A book POTA fans should
read.
Hey Gang,
I don't know why I
haven't mentioned this book before, but I'm doing so now.
It's "The
Studio" by John Gregory Dunne. It was published in 1968 and here's
what's said about it at Amazon.com where it sells for only $11.20.
"In 1967, John Gregory Dunne asked for unlimited access to the inner
workings of Twenteith Century Fox. Meraculously, he got it.
For one year Dunne went everywhere there was to go and talked to
everyone worth talking to within the studio. He tracked every step
of the creation of pictures like "Dr. Dolittle," "Planet of the Apes," and
"The Boston Strangler." The result is a work of reportage that,
thirty years later, may still be our most minutely observed and therefore
most uproariously funny portrait of the motion picture business.
"Whether he is recounting a showdown between Fox's studio head and two
suave shark-like agents, watching a producer's girlfriend steal a silver
plate from a restaurant, or shielding his eyes against the glare of a
Hollywood premiere where the guests include a chimp in a white tie and
tails, Dunne captures his subject in all its showmanship, savvy,
vulgarity, and hype.
"'Reads as racily as a novel...(Dunne) has a
novelist's ear for speech and eye for revealing detail...Anyone who has
tiptoed along those corridors of power is bound to say Dunne's
impressionism rings true.'-- Los Angeles Times"
Here's an excerpt
about "Planet of the Apes"....
"That afternoon, Richard Zanuck watched
the previous day's rushes of 'Planet of the Apes.' The scene showed
an ape doctor giving a blood transfusion. The recipient was
Charlton Heston, the donor Linda Harrison, who played Nova, the mute Earth
Girl. In angle after angle, the ape fastened the tube between the
arms of the two Earth people.
"'You don't give a transfusion that
way,' Owen McLean said in the darkness of the projection room. 'You
take blood out of one arm first, then pump it into the other arm.
You can't make blod flow from arm to arm like that.'
"'He's
right, Dick,' Stan Hough said.
"Zanuck was unperturbed. 'What
the hell,' he said. 'Maybe that's how an ape does it.'"
I
first read this book way back in the early Seventies. I read it again a
couple years ago. I highly recommend it to you all.
Check it out.

"The first rule of remakes is never remake a great movie," says
Burton. "But that's part of what appealed to me. I guess I'm kind of perverse

between Wahlberg's astronaut and Helena Bonham Carter's sympathetic chimp? "I

Here's some of Boulle's 'brilliant'
dialogue in the scene four years later between Zaius and Maximus.
MAXIMUS
The
situation has done nothing but
deteriorate
over the last four years.
Ever
since the appearance of that man
Taylor
. . .
ZAIUS
That
monster with a human face and the
language
of apes, who has caused grave
defection
amongst weak spirits like Zira
and
Cornelius. Their arrest hasn't done
any
good. It's the nephew of Zira, that
imbecile
Lucius, who now propogates
heresies
and madness.
MAXIMUS
Why
don't you have him arrested too?
ZAIUS
They
would find another to take his place.
Uproar grows outside.
Zaius and Maximus look out of the window again. A group of
mounted gorilla police are in the middle of charging the demonstrators.
MAXIMUS
Brave
gorillas. Happily they keep
a
cool head. They are completely
loyal.
ZAIUS
Loyal
and stupid. Their truncheon
blows
only end by provoking more
riots,
which recommence within the
hour.
Yikes!!! Calling the script doctor!!!

|
.html .htmlWell, unlike last issue, which seemed it would never come, I got the May/June
issue of Cinescape today. It's got Angelina Jolie on the cover looking like
she's just sucked a lemon.
Anyway, there's a Summer Movie Preview run down, so of course the new POTA is
mentioned. In fact it's given an entire page -- in which absolutely nothing
of substance is said! -- but it does have a photo from the film that I
haven't seen before, and this cartoon of an orang like from the original film
in a bumper car against Jackie Chan in another car. Oh yes, there's also a
picture of Thade across from the table of contents page, but you only see him
from behind, and he looks like he's in need of an enema or something.
But what I liked in this issue is, as usual, Mark A. Altman's The Last Word.
In a piece titled "Who Let The Dogs Out? This summer is full of buzzed-about
flicks. But will they be any good?," the former editor of Sci-Fi Universe
writes about PLANET OF THE APES:
"You remade it, you maniacs! With the original classic, Franklin Schaffner
brought a restrained sense of realism to a potentially outlandish premise.
My fear with Tim Burton, whose style veers toward the outrageous, is that the
original's brooding fatalism will be lost in a kiddie-friendly concoction of
CGI and over-the-top production design. But that won't stop throngs of
fanboys from seeing it time and time again."
He predicts it'll gross $180 million.

This is no lie - - I saw Altman at
the Egyptian Theatre showing of "Planet" last year that Heston hosted - - - damn
fanboy!
What disturbs me is that
"Entertainment Weekly" showing the humans mingling with apes. Once again, like
in "Vanity Fair", Burton is defying nature. Humans should be with humans, damn
it! It ain't right. Perverts.
In my next e-mail I'd like to tell
you all what the Bible says about "Planet of the Apes". Any of you heard of the
Bible? Mr. Burton need'nt worry about a hot summer for he will soon burn in
Hell. Good day.

Subject: [pota] Apes' bits in latest
Cinescape. **Spoilers**
Well, unlike last issue, which seemed it
would never come, I got the May/June issue of Cinescape today. It's
got Angelina Jolie on the cover looking like she's just sucked a lemon.
Anyway, there's a Summer Movie Preview run down, so of course the new
POTA is mentioned. In fact it's given an entire page -- in which
absolutely nothing of substance is said! -- but it does have a photo from
the film that I haven't seen before, and this cartoon of an orang like
from the original film in a bumper car against Jackie Chan in another car.
Oh yes, there's also a picture of Thade across from the table
of contents page, but you only see him from behind, and he looks like he's
in need of an enema or something.
But what I liked in this issue is,
as usual, Mark A. Altman's The Last Word. In a piece titled "Who
Let The Dogs Out? This summer is full of buzzed-about flicks.
But will they be any good?," the former editor of Sci-Fi Universe
writes about PLANET OF THE APES:
"You remade it, you maniacs!
With the original classic, Franklin Schaffner brought a restrained
sense of realism to a potentially outlandish premise. My fear with
Tim Burton, whose style veers toward the outrageous, is that the
original's brooding fatalism will be lost in a kiddie-friendly concoction
of CGI and over-the-top production design. But that won't stop
throngs of fanboys from seeing it time and time again."
He
predicts it'll gross $180 million.

| Subject: The Lost Words of Franklin Schaffner. |
|
.html .htmlHi Everybody,
While I try to get over the terrible trick played on me by a certain person
who said there'd be a new POTA trailer on TV tonight, I thought I'd share
with you all parts of an interview I found with the late, great Franklin J.
Schaffner.
I haven't seen many interviews with him on the subject of PLANET. The best
was probably the one in Cinefantastique, and that didn't say much. Then one
day in a used bookstore I found a collection of old 'Films in Review'
magazines. On the cover of one for Aug.-Sept. 1969, beneath a picture of
Catherine Deneuve, was written "A Colloquy with F. J. Schaffner." I looked
inside. What I found was an interview with Schaffner done by somebody named
Stanely Lloyd Kaufman Jr., a Yale undergraduate. The interview was conducted
by phone and taped. Here's some of the more interesting things Schaffner had
to say about PLANET in what I think is the best interview with him that I've
read.
Kaufman: There were many long shots in PLANET. Were they merely to give
hints of Earth?
Schaffner: Well, in southern Utah and northern Arizonia there are areas and
plateaus where you see for 20 miles and 360 degrees. Also, there won't be a
telephone pole, nor a person, nor a road -- nothing. It's overwhelming, and
it absorbs you, and you can think of nothing but how the camera can get it on
film. It seemed appropriate to me to set the astronauts up for horizon lines
on Panavision, and to represent them as very, very small in relation to the
planet on which they were. First of all, they had lost their spaceship, they
were cut off from everything. Second, these long shots impressed the locale
on the audience, not the personalities of the astronauts. There was another
problem with this picture. Its got this lousy title of 'Planet of the Apes,'
and from the very beginning audiences expect to see an ape. But for thirty
minutes they don't. Therefore, it is obligatory to keep those first thirty
minutes going while you set up the story. That required a combination of
things, both in scripting and in directing. We hoped that at the end of the
thirty minutes the audience would be surprised when the apes appeared.
Kaufman: The crash-down opening sequence in PLANET seemed much more
terrifying than anything in other films of the genre, like 2001, for instance.
Schaffner: Right. A body of water was chosen for the space-ship to land in
because the craft had been programmed to land on a solid surface. When the
space-ship went out of control the astronauts had a chance of survival if it
crashed into water. Obviously, until we got into the lake we didn't want to
wake the astronauts up because we didn't want anybody to start reading tapes
or playing back tapes, to find an answer to why they were where they were,
and so forth. The crash itself, of course, is very definately the bridge
between the men in the rocket going to sleep and waking up in the locale of
the ape society. One thing the crashdown did do, it seemed to me, was to
provide a dramatic coming out of the titles. The prologue for PLANET was
very quiet, and as we came out of the titles we had to get the story going.
To get the aerial shots for the crash-down the cameraman was on top of a
World War I biplane. We also had a B-25 with a camera in its nose. But when
I ran their footage for the crash-down it simply didn't seem to work. So I
said the hell with it, let's shoot the picture and then we'll come back to
this thing. When we finished shooting and I sat down to cut the picture
there was one can of film I had never seen and by cutting wide-footage into
zoomed-lens stuff and mixing things up and reversing footage, literally
reversing footage, and even running some footage backwards, we put together a
sequence which seems to work pretty well for the crash. But it was not
planned at all. What was planned didn't get on the screen. What is up there
on the screen is what was edited together out of desperation.
Kaufman: PLANET has been criticized for being an inconsistent mixture of
social satire and sci-fi seriousness.
Schaffner: There are a number of ways to approach a project of this kind.
You can make it into the blackest comedy imaginable; you can do a straight,
realistic science-fiction piece; horror science-fiction; or straight
melodrama. The situation was exotic enough for anything. But our
over-riding intention was to make, for lack of a better word, a mass
entertainment film. I'm not one who says anything entertaining isn't art. I
think the most successful art has elements that entertain. That is why
PLANET is not all-out satire, why it is not all-out "gallows' humor," why
humor, and melodrama, are mixed with the satire.
Kaufman: Should I assume you're not really interested in the science-fiction
aspect of this film?
Schaffner: Yes. I always winced when somebody called it a science-fiction
piece.
To be continued....

Rory,
Thanks for backing me.You are right,I can say whatever I want to on that

either. And I am not trying to drag you into this Rory, but you did as much
"commentary" on this "new movie" of their's as I did and no one ever got all
pissed off at you.Why they singled me out,I don't know.I guess they didn't
like what else I was saying and they used my "new movie" comments as the
reason to try to silence me.They seem to forget that at least I tried to get
some other topics going.I have added subjects of discussion to the group. So I
guess I am back from my temporary banishment to the Forbidden Zone.
And go ahead and say my word is no good,I don't care.Like I said,I never
promised that I would stay quiet on this. And now that I know at least one

No! Mlccougar, I love the things you have to say

Thanks for backing me.You

Rory's right. "Access Hollywood" was a
bust. But they had some cool footage of the "Final Fantasy" movie (the first
ever photo-realistic computer created humans). Basically, "Access Hollywood" is
a prostitute for NBC's programming. They've had "reports" on the new show
"Weakest Link" all week. Damn corporate
culture!

Hey! I just got an e-mail from Fox.
They've pushed back the trailer a week. Now it's coming out next Friday. But you
can "preview" it this weekend on the website. I'm confused. - -

Come on, man. I'm just kidding. I
look at it this way, either extreme is a moot point right now. I wouldn't want
to say it'll definitely be great because I might have to eat crow. I wouldn't
want to say it'll definitely suck, either. Even if I don't like the movie,
if I can respect it (i.e. they actually create something and not just reap the
rewards) I'll be fine with it. - - - -
Jeff
PS: Fox had alot of opportunities to make
this earlier but they waited until this script. That says to me they aren't just
making a money grab, though obviously that's a prime
motivation.

Considering this group's track record for self control, I don't think
I'm out of line by saying you guys across the pond should really
unsubsribe before July 27. I would never try to ruin someone else's
viewing experience, but there's almost 100 people on this list.
Someone will mess it up for you. Bet you a dollar.
