Thanks,
I've got some pics of the Addars which I'll post in the next day or so. They really don't do them justice but will at least give you some
idea.

I kinda like the new novel cover, it's better than the previous version w/ the generic film canister.
Don't ya think?

Subject: [pota] Apes' bits in latest Cinescape. **Spoilers**

Well, unlike last issue, which seemed it would never come, I got the May/June
issue of Cinescape today.  It's got Angelina Jolie on the cover looking like
she's just sucked a lemon.

Anyway, there's a Summer Movie Preview run down, so of course the new POTA is
mentioned.  In fact it's given an entire page -- in which absolutely nothing
of substance is said! -- but it does have a photo from the film that I
haven't seen before, and this cartoon of an orang like from the original film
in a bumper car against Jackie Chan in another car.   Oh yes, there's also a
picture of Thade across from the table of contents page, but you only see him
from behind, and he looks like he's in need of an enema or something.

But what I liked in this issue is, as usual, Mark A. Altman's The Last Word.
In a piece titled "Who Let The Dogs Out?  This summer is full of buzzed-about
flicks.  But will they be any good?,"  the former editor of Sci-Fi Universe
writes about PLANET OF THE APES:

"You remade it, you maniacs!  With the original classic, Franklin Schaffner
brought a restrained sense of realism to a potentially outlandish premise.
My fear with Tim Burton, whose style veers toward the outrageous, is that the
original's brooding fatalism will be lost in a kiddie-friendly concoction of
CGI and over-the-top production design.  But that won't stop throngs of
fanboys from seeing it time and time again."

He predicts it'll gross $180 million.

can do something new and creative, but for money.Thats all they see in it.

Hey Mr Whitty,

Just an FYI for you,I meant the films made by college students for their
classes.

I really don't care that you do,but let me ask you something, why do you have
it in for me anyway? Is it because I told you that I dealt with the eBay
dealer that allegedely said you didn't know what you are talking about, and
that I had a good transaction with him?Or is it because I don't care what you
and Alex (or the rest)say about me and my views on the movie? It sure seems
that if anyone else said what I said, you'd be ok with it,but because its me
then you damn me to hell.Just tell me why.Not via private email either.I want
you to post it here so everyone can see it.Of course since most of the group
says nothing I'm sure your backers will be right behind you,and I'll be left
alone. But you know what,I don't care.I sure as hell don't need or want your
approval.I just want to know why you are singling me out.

I just am going by the prices that show up on eBay. The Soldier Ape B is
always high. The lowest I have seen it go there in recent months is around
$80 (I have checked in the last few weeks since I completed my set). Felix
from FantasiaToyz lists it at $120. Before I found mine for $40.95, I asked
him if he would sell me one for $80 seeing how I bought all of my other
figures from him (except the Chimp Land Ape and Caesar) and he said no dice.

Here's the quote Linda Harrison gave me this morning for "Ape Chronicles"

"The timing is just right with the right creative team beginning with

I just got a call back from Fox Consumer.  I was at work of course and so
only a messege was left on my machine, but a Jane (as in "Me Tarzan, you
Jane") there says that PLANET OF THE APES will be out on DVD August 21st.

Now that's all she said, so I called back to find out if she's talking about
the TV show, or a special edition of the original, or what?

If you want to give her a call and ask her yourself, it's Jane at Fox
Consumer at 1-888-223-2369.

I'm expecting a call back from her -- she was out when I returned her call.

Screw Monday, "Entertainment Weekly" is out today. I just picked up a copy at Tower video (I don't know if they got it ahead of time). "Apes" is the star of their "Summer Preview": the cover, the contents page (we get to see what Lisa Marie looks like as a chimp- - - she looks like Bonham Carter). There's a nice 2 page illustration that plays on the 30th Anniversary poster and a 5 page lead article with new photos all the way. I don't two copies of magazines, not even the recent "Cinescape" but I'm getting 2 of this, one to look at and one to save!

Medicom: Does the Lawgiver have loose parts? I want to open it but not if there's loose parts to loose. It looks like it's 2 pieces.

New trailer premieres tonight on the website, 7:30 PM Pacific, 10:30 PM Eastern. Rule the Planet! Bow Your Head! and whatever they coin tonight.

Yes. There is the table with the scrolls on it and another set of scrolls to

Good news on the TV show, but it doesn't automatically mean DVD. Look how long it took the "Star Trek" series to come out on DVD and the 'Apes" is considered lesser.

Topps: There are 4 promo cards coming out. #1 will be in next week's issue of "Wizard". #2 will be in the next issue of "Previews" in a week or two (both are available in comic shops). #3 will be at sci-fi conventions this spring. #4 will be in one of the upcoming "Dark Horse" comic books. The cards themselves will probably be out around the time of the movie.

Topps is OK but I wish Inkworks had the license since they did such a good job with the "Archives" (Set #2 is probably out of the question now). By the way, Inkworks went to that Arthur Jacobs archives I mentioned for their rare photos. Eric Greene did a ton of research there for his book.

Dear Rory,
Just talked to Jane at Fox Consumer and she said planet series will happen at
the end of  the year maybe Nov. She didnt speciefy dvd or video but I would
imagine both formats. It looks like we twisted their arms, the higher ups got
the message from fans Call Jane and verify what she tells you.

PS does anyone know about topps new movie trading cards set coming this

Does anyone have an extra ape binder from inkworks ape card set last year?
I have the card set binder sold out.

You can also find details of all the above in the latest issue of Previews.
I haven't seen the above mentioned magazine, but Previews certainly has

Also, the issue of Dark Horse Extra (#34, April 2001) with the PotA comics

My only thought is that this show would bomb. Anthologies can be good,
especially with a high calibre of cast and crew (you're talking to a big TZ
fan here) but I can't see people tuning in to an anthology show based only
on one concept. It'd be like the Twilight Zone only making episodes about
flying saucers.

If a new Ape series were to come out, it would have to have a regular set of
characters, but I can't see it happening. What I would bet my money on
however, is an animated spin-off series from the new movie, with even more
merchandising. In fact, they're probably thinking about it right now.

I find it fascinating in the most part, but like most other readers I found

I've no idea, but I love that sequence! I doubt it was particularly
expensive, but it works really well with Jerry Goldsmith's music.

And as for the spaceship - I've said it before and I'll say it again, there
is one major design flaw in the way the ship is built... no ashtray!
Honestly, if you're going to let your astronauts smoke on board, at least

Where is Fox coming from? All these books will do is help them promote their
franchise. As far as I know Fox isn't planning an "Official" book about the
originals. Unauthorized books that look bad because there's no pictures will
reflect badly on the series to the general consumer and maybe they'll buy
less DVDs and "classic" items Fox wants to sell. These books will still come
out.

Here's the quote Linda Harrison gave me this morning for "Ape Chronicles"

How hard will it be to put "SPOILERS" on the subject lines of our postings?
I just think we RUDE Yanks should show some consideration to our fellow
English-speaking allies.   When I wrote you Aussies and Brits beware, I meant
beware of the typical "F**k You" attitude of US Yanks when it comes to things
    like this.

Well, we'll see how it goes at the end of July.

.html Yeah, I believe Fox's strategy would be to keep the focus on the new movie and it's merchandise first, and THEN exploit the "classic" products ( most likely when the new movie hits home vid and DVD.). With regard to unofficial books, Fox take the same stance as unofficial merchandise. Why should Fox miss out on potential revenue from a property they own? Like I've said before, it IS a business. I'm sure the proposed books will be good ( God, the "POTA Revisited" one better be after the 15 plus years build up!) but the publishers were probably too cheap to pay the liscencing bill to use official photos.

.htmlWell, the footage went by so fast you could hardly get a good look at
anything.  However, I will say that the makeups look fantastic.  You get a
really good look at the orangs and they are wonderful.  Tim Roth's Thade
looks fantastic, too.  But I think Ari looks kind of cartoonish and will be
the one element we original fans will find hardest to take.

The action looks good.  There's a great shot of the ape army facing the human
army.  Lots of leaping apes, of course.

Sorry, if I'm not making much sense, but it all went by very fast.

Yes, your DVD cover ruled the planet. It's on my DVD. Looking at this less cynically, maybe Fox saw the 30th anniversary stuff as being "for the fans". I consider the previous DVDs as part of the 30th Ann. since they had the same artwork. Maybe they assumed the old fans know the ending. Now this new DVD is for the new people brought in by Burton's movie, and they don't get "Behind the POTA", which was "for the fans". I have a feeling when the new movie hits the lemmings will be driving up the price of Medicoms even further.

There will definitely be a novelization but I don't know who. But the
"making of" book is by the guy who did the U.K. book "Burton on

        .html Very nice Rory!
It would be nice if Fox were to issue the 5 movies on DVD using their original poster art.
Are you planning to make new covers for the other 4?
        Best,
        KEN

With the news that Fox is going to be re-releasing APES on DVD, I want to
bring up again how bad I think it was that Fox decided to spoil the
conclusion of the original by putting the Statue of Liberty on the cover.

I hate the 30th Anniversary PLANET cover so much that as soon as the DVD came
out last August, I had a new cover all ready.  Here's the DVD cover for
PLANET I had done for me on a computer using the original posters.  I sent
one to Jeff Krueger.  I do believe he liked it very much.  It fits the DVD
        case perfectly.

I'm sending it as an attachment, so sorry to any of you this might
        inconvenience.

You know, Mike, in the last twenty-four hours I've been wondering if you've

        Start making sense, Whitty!!!

        .htmlKen,

All I got with this was a zip or something.  Why do I get these from you
sometimes?  I won't open them because I've already got too many somewhere in
        my computer.

So, if you were saying something to me about my DVD cover could you please
        try again.

        Thanks,
        Rory
