Answered your own question there. The DVD doesn't enter into it. It
costs $25 for a couple to see a flick and have a damn beverage during
that film. Projection is subpar at most theaters (lower wattage
bulbs), the audience usually forgets that they're not in their living
room and talks through it (if not to each other, then on their
phones - swear to God, I heard this one - (ring) "Hullo? . . . I'm at
the movies . . . Shrek . . . it's pretty good so far . . . "). I
love my DVDs, but I woudl much rather enjoy films in the theater. I
have it down to a science now:

I go on a weekday afternoon (lower price, not crowded, though still a
risk for chattering senior citizens)

I have blacklisted certain theaters that I know draw too many kids
(no longer limited to kids' movies - I watched Cider House Rules next
to a 2 year old). Stadium seating is also near-mandatory at this
point. If a film is not playing at "my" theater, I don't see it.

Phil, like me you have going to see a movie almost down to a science.  Movies
I don't get to see in a theatre I know I'll catch on DVD or cable or
whatever.  It's getting almost impossible NOT to see a film these days.

Okay I did like the new movie and all .But I'de have to give it
four and a half stars . It semes as though Burton didn't try nearly
as hard as he could have .

Sure he got the script late in the game .But I still think he should
have waited untill Holiday season to relise it . Even if it ment
going aginst Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings .
The script is in bad shape . I got the behind book and the movie
tie in book . So much is missing in the movie . From both sorces .

What I did like though . Was the races in this movie . The Apes
acted like thier classes . Chimps in general are auctly more wiled
then Gorillas . That part I really liked , and yah the make up was
amazing . Though I'm still used to the classic make up .

But another thing is that Burton took out a lot of comerical
sceans ! That was anoying . That ticked off some people
to .Specially the " Get me the space man " scean .

Now about that sequal . If Burtan and none of the other cast
members wouldn't to return . I wouldn't be heart broken . The only
character that I really liked was Tim Roth' Thade .So I'de miss him
and MCD .But I could definetly do without Carter and Walberg . There
relantiship was intersting . But they didn't do enough with it .

is blood .

Silent of the Lambs is even more fasnating . I love it cause you're
scared more sycologicaly . Rather then every one being betten up all
the time . Okay so people do get beaten up in it .But you know what I
mean .

Yeah! Where was the "get me the spaceman!" line? That's the best line in
the trailer.

As for the comment : how can Wahlberg crash two ships and the chimp lands
his perfectly? Back in "Batman" people complained when Battie strafed the
Joker with his batplane and couldn't hit him. Then the Joker shoots Battie
with one shot and sends the plane crashing to the cathedral steps
(reminiscent of one of Wahlberg's crashes. People complained about that and
Burton said he did it for crazy humor. It's kind of the same here. I admit I
laughed when the chimp lands and his pod ssssslowllly opens. We know
exactly who that is. Not believable but an amusing moment.

Ultimately, the film is consistent with Burton's past films.

H B-C is simply wrangling for more dough. Can you blame her. If you spent
the equivalent of 10, 24 hour days in a make-up chair, not to mention the
amount of time in makeup, you'd want a raise too. In any case. Given fact
that the pods weren't two seaters, and the state of the relationship between
her character and Thade, I doubt he brought her with him.

I just got back from my third screening, and I have to say, I like it better
every time I see it. To clarify, Thade calls him the trouble maker, and this
human, not spaceman. And it's 1:59 and not 1:50 minutes long. That aside, I
think it's as good if not better than Conquest and definitely better than
Battle. And a damn good film considering it was made in well under a year.
I think it should have been a prequel and shot after the next one. Why you
may ask? You should always open on a strong note, and I think the next one
will be it. It'll be more like the book and H B-C can take a break. She
doesn't even have to been in the next film, unless they end up back on the
other planet and then in just a cameo at the end. The other planet had three
moons by the way, but once he lands you can only see two of them at a time.

I don't auctly have problems with the landing of the chimp and Leo .
I kinda liked that auctly .
Yah the " Get me that space man " line was my Dad's favoriet part
and he was disapointed that it wasn't in the movie .

What's the first line in your e-mail refer to?

I hope they do but I don't think they will stay on Earth in a sequel.
Cost -wise it'll be cheaper to go back to the other planet since they've
already designed and built stuff (though I know for a fact Ape City was torn
down as soon as they finished with it). I think they will bring back H. B.
Carter and explore that relationship more.

Like I said, I think people will re-evaluate the movie when it's on video
and they've gotten over the sting of it not being perfect. And no, that's
not a load of hugger mugger, Rory!

exactly like the opening of the MiB sound track? And not dissimilar from
Apes. Talk about a one trick pony!

performance I first thought! His family are said to be direct decendants of
Semos, the ape that lead the original revolt against the humans. And though
no doubt that's where Thade gets his temper, he would have historically
considered a savior of his people. That's just the sort of megalomainia that
drives Thade. And since it was the gal who talks to Leo in the beginning who
raised them by hand, and they doe seem responsible for their own chimps, then
Pericles was Semos' father, and the great great, great, great, great great
great, great, great grandfather of Thade!

I was watching a show about real chimpanzees last week on the Discovery
Channel (or maybe Animal Planet?), anyway they talked about how chimps faces
turn black as they become adults.  I also noticed that it was only the young
FEMALE chimps that had the white beards like what Thade has.

No wonder Thade had a terrible temper -- he has a baby girl chimp face!!!!

.htmlOkay, here's one for you primates to ponder.  I don't think this has ever
been brought up in this group before.

I was just on the Internet Movie Database, and the latest comment left on the
ORIGINAL movie, by someone in Hull, England, wants to know what happened to
the moon in PLANET?

Remember Dodge (or was it Landon?) talking about the 'cloud cover at night,
that strange luminosity, and yet no moon'?   What happened to the moon?!!!   
I've actually thought about this over the many years, and of course the
filmmakers had to get rid of the moon otherwise the astronauts would know
where they were right away, plus they had to have that 'cloud-cover at night'
so they couldn't see the stars, too.

Well, I've made up a theory to explain the lost of the moon, but I'd like to
hear what some of you come up with first.  My theory is rather unlikely, but
then it's rather unlikely that the moon wouldn't be there in the first place.

So, let's hear what you have to say.  Hey, this beats talking about who'd
Thade's daddy, or how did he get back to earth, doesn't it?

Okay moon theory. Well here's a lame idea . If you go from a
scientific pov . Then the moon could be at a diffrent poition . The
story is what ? Three thousend years in the feauter ? That is a long
time from now , and then . So if the conitents of earth can change
over short perioeds of time , and if we keep on screwing up Atrica
with the ice . And pluse what is the word I'm looking ofr ---- dang .
Okay with frozen people . When people become frozen and every thing .

The Moon was either destroyed or thrown out of orbit by the war.
Since it was probably used as a base for missile launches.
Another interesting point is they sau the Sun is to white for Beletrix.
Though that makes you think of it's neighbor, it would definetly be too white
for that one. Which was the Sun for the planet in the book! In case you
haven't guessed yet, it was the other shoulder of Orion, another Tim Burton
tie-in, Betelgeuse !!!

Finally, Planet of the Apes is coming to the lowlands of the Netherlands. I
read an article about the movie and i wanted to get some more information
about John Alexander. It was mentioned in the article that he nowadays has a
kind of "monkeyschool" or "apeschool" or something where actors learn to
move and behave like, you'll never guess, monkeys. Does someone has a
website or an e-mailadres of that institute. I would like to interview him
for a televisionshow in the Netherlands,

I would think Fox would want to release the new film on DVD before the TV
series.   At this point I have to say, "What difference does it make?"   
Sooner or later they both will be out.  After that then what will have have
to look forward too?  It sure was a lot more fun waiting for the new film to
come out than it was to see it.  So, relax and enjoy the wait.

The cartoon series takes place later than "Beneath". In the TV show the
apes take over later than in "Conquest". The only way it would all fit is
alternate timelines. It's all lies!

Peter Staddon, you'll find towards the end of the conversation that he says,
"We are releasing the Planet of the Apes TV series in the not too distant
future for all the apes fans out there."

Well, finally something I have to agree on with Jeff "hugger-mugger" Krueger.
 It's silly to try and come up with POTA timelines.  When the chimp-o-nauts
landed off the coast of California -- and got one look at Krueger wandering
the beach looking for a cigarette butt that Arthur Jacobs may have dropped in
'67 -- the whole course of future events in the universe changed.

Yes, this is probably true, as well as we'll all be buying the PLANET OF THE
APES Five-Star Collector's Edition DVD in a couple years, then the Five-Star
Box Set of all four sequels, PLUS the 5-Star Collector's Edition of Burton's
POTA as we all get ready for that film's sequel!

I kept waiting for Keanu to end his sentences with Dude! Any comment from
our Brit friends on this topic? After all, a large percentage of both casts,

That seems to be Fox's SOP lately. Sit around thinking and talking about
doing a project for ten years and then rush it out in less than one! Someone
ought to shake things up over at Ape Management.

What is this unreadable crap?

It's already old news but I finally got the "Behind the POTA" special
edition DVD. The sights! The sounds! Heston's buttocks! It's all there.

One thing I noticed is they changed the chapters from the first edition.
But somehow they both end up having 22. What they did was take 4 away from
the original movie , giving both Jacobs and Boulle their own chapter. Then
they broke up "Escape", "Conquest" and "Battle" into 2 chapters each. This
is the one saving grace for having both DVDs. If you want to find a section
of the original in a hurry, go to the first one. But the new one makes it
easier to find a fave moment in the sequels. Important? I guess not, but I
had to give myself some consolation for buying it twice.

The makeup test looks incredible. I've had it for a decade bootlegged but
it's like seeing it for the first time. I also dug the Don Taylor thing.
Excellent quality on the NATO presentation, less so on "A Look Behind...". I
kinda got bored with the dailies, didn't watch the whole thing. Having a new
DVD is like being a kid at Christmas, I wanna go from one thing to the next!

But if you want them to take another crack at it you better get back to a
theater and support it. And it's really not bad. I give it two feet thumbs
up. Maybe the next one will be a four thumb movie.

Ape school was only put together for the film.
I suggest contacting him through Fox or Circ de Sole'.

It's a sad comment on the public school system when the guy from Holland's
English is better than some of the members of the group who use it as their
first language. We'll become dirty dumb beasts before you know it. Sorry,
couldn't resist.

Sorry, but if I'm not getting paid, I'm not watching it again. My time is
too valuable to spend on a film of only so-so quality. You really would
have to pay me to sit through it again, and if it's something I have to grow
to like, again it's not worth my time.

Well, again I see I'm not alone in this feeling.  When I think maybe I should
go see it again, I remember what I saw and I just can't do it.  And yeah, the
damage has been done.  I can only hope it's soon forgotten, like 1976' "King
Kong" remake, or else we're all in trouble.  I, too, really would like to see
NO sequel.

It's made $148 million in 3 weeks. That's not chump change. Right now it's
the 5th biggest movie of the summer. There will be another one.

I heard 2 moons in the advertising. Anyway, no matter how many moons, one
of them is from future Earth, that's way Taylor and pals didn't have one.

Maybe you can't polish a turd, but I still think it could have used a couple
more months of polishing. Or better still a rewrite. Well, it's released
now so, all I can do it hope for sequels, and better ones at that. Either
that or a true remake. Though I still think that the sequel can be an
adaptation of the book.

Well, goody, goody.   The new "Planet of the Apes" may be an embarassment
critically, but at least it's not at the boxoffice.  It is rather heartening
to know how many were interested in a new APES, just too bad the baboons at
Fox couldn't have delivered a better product.

And it's spelled sequel, not sequal.

I forget where it was that I read recently that a film's domestic gross is
only around 20% of what it does worldwide these days!

Hey!!!   Are you so full of hugger-mugger you just got it coming out of your
ears these days?   A valiant group effort?!!!  Everybody's laughing all the
way to the bank with this, and the poor original film has yet another blemish
to it's reputation as a serious, adult science fiction film.  Well, it lived
down it's sequels to be recognized as a classic, so I guess it can survive
this.  Hell, Burton called it a perfect film.  I agree with him there.  He
sure as hell doesn't know how to make one, though!

Just a quick note to say goodbye for now. Too much else going on (none of
it good) and there's just way too many posts to deal with.

If things get better I'll join again. Hopefully by then all the movie
talk will have petered out and the list will be a little more manageable.
