I don't know. The box office is
just brutal . Next week a Nicolas Cage flick opens. I hope Fox puts this stuff
into consideration.

I
really think Box Office will head back up next week and I am positive the
$200mil will be achieved in the US. Even if they get close the sequel is
a given me thinks.

They're
not going to pull the plugs on the DVDs. Fox probably expects
Burton's POTA to be a huge Christmas Video, and the TV series will only
help.
Stop teasing Jeff, you mean Aussie!!!

Eight years of development and eight months of production. What the hell
were they expecting on a rushed film with that half-assed writing? With the
opening numbers it should be obvious to even those Hollywood idiots, that had
they made a better film they would be packing them in. The interest was
certainly there. You can't have legs on a film that's as hollow as a
chocolate Santa. Enough soulless films have been made that we don't need
more. This should be a wake up call to Craptown that even with a popular
concept you can't force mediocre movies down the publics throat. <.html

The site is being relocated to another server with better
prices.
5021 is the year the Spacestation crashed on the planet, for all
who don't know.
Opps, that's the year that Leo lands on the Planet.
The year is seen in the script and comic adaption by Dark Horse. well,
never the less you all now know what 5021 is. Just got notice from my new
server. The server is now on line. All I have to do now is upload...and
upload...and uplaod...and upload. :o( Plus there's going to be a bit of a
new look. As the theme is Oberon = Camila.
Menus will consist of Oberon crews and aftermath to Calima. (Well, you'll
know what I mean once you've seen it) Cool concept, just some time to put it
together. So it will be a little while.
I'll be taking a vacation in late August so it won't be up until MID
September.
As I've said, I NEED A BREAK.
Best,

Cougar IM'ed me after the Memphis festival and haven't heard from him since.
I told him about spending the last night in the lobby when there was a power
failure. Kim got very little sleep and I didn't get any, what with the staff
shining flashlights around and pounding on doors for wake up calls since the
phones were out. Need less to say I had a very long drive home. I talked to
Kim after the reported success of the book signing and B & N. She was almost
caught up on her sleep. I'm still trying to get on a proper schedule. No
luck so far, but it's only been a week. I woke up today at 5:30pm and my
alarm was set for 1:30, but I'm still hopeful.
As far as all the talk about the new film, I think H B-C said it best, when
asked if she watched the original or if she felt it would detract from her
performance, "Oh no no no, I went back, and watched it, just to get all my
ideas, you know, crib Kim Hunter. But um, no I watched it, and it's a really
great film. And our film can't ever pretend ever to be as good as that, but
it's a very different film." <.html

Well, I've been prepared for that eventuality since late '99. But no offense
taken. There are plenty of walking brain-dead here, especially in Texas.
Howard Stern and Jay Leno often do street Jeopardy, and the number of people
who haven't a clue, even on common knowledge questions, never fails to amaze
me. And there are plenty who over estimate the US' size and influence on the

Director Tim Burton's POTA has spun $148

And after eight years in development

.html 'PLANET OF THE APES'
Anyone watching the new movie "Planet of the Apes" and
hoping to see an on-screen mating between British actress
Helena Bonham Carter's passionate human rights activist
chimpanzee and Mark Wahlberg's heroic human astronaut
are out of luck. Although Carter admits there is a strong
attraction between their characters, she insisted rumors
that director Tim Burton ("Sleepy Hollow," "Batman") cut a
steamy inter-species sex scene out of the final version of
the movie is completely false. "I would have been up for
it, absolutely, but I don't think this movie is a manifesto
of bestiality," she exclaimed. " ... This is ultimately a
family film." Carter might not know where those nasty
rumors about monkey love got started, but Wahlberg ("The
Perfect Storm," "Boogie Nights") certainly does. "What
happened was me and Tim (Burton) talked about this
relationship early on before I saw the script. I had
seen it on paper and there was a potential for it to go
further. And I just started talking in interviews, 'Yeah,
it's hard-core. We're just bleeping away.' I was messing
around and people started to believe it," confessed the
30-year-old actor. "So next we're at the press junket
and people started asking, 'So why did you cut out the
scene?' And Tim is saying, 'What are you talking about?'
(and they say) 'Mark said ... ' (and Burton replied)
'Well, if they shot it, I wasn't there that day and I
don't know what the hell he's talking about.'" <.html

Uhh...true. But most isn't always best. Hollywood thinks if the do
something big they can shove it down everyone's throats. Hence Apes. Too
bad it wasn't a smaller independent film. IMHO the best film of 2000 was
Crouching Tiger from China. Hence Apes. Oh well, get out and support it!

According to today's "Variety", "Apes" is opening well in countries and
then dropping. Read between the lines Fox, even if you need glasses. You
have a potential franchise but you need to provide more than cool looking
monkeys.

Uhh...true. But most isn't always best. Hollywood thinks if the do
something big they can shove it down everyone's throats. Hence Apes. Too
bad it wasn't a smaller independent film. IMHO the best film of 2000 was
Crouching Tiger from China. Hence Apes. Oh well, get out and support it!

Firstly, I wanted to change the subject line to the better one above.
Secondly, I've just heard on E! News Daily that with all the success of
sequels and remakes this summer, the thinking in the industry is that we can
expect more of the same. About APES specifically they said, "The question
for Fox now is (since this was made to start a franchise), 'Can we make a
sequel for a decent amount of money, and still MAKE money?'"
So, I'll bet that if we get a sequel it will be a cheaper movie than this
one, but hopefully the spend what they need to for a better script, otherwise
I think Fox can kiss this APES franchise goodbye. <.html

He probably loves it more than anyone in here, enough to make a great website

respect everyone else's opinion on how they felt about the new film, even

respect those of others. That's all. I'm off my soapbox now.

opening. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, the director
of "Sleepy Hollow" and "Mars Attacks!" wondered: "How is
this news?" According to Burton, last-minute fussing over
a movie is par for the course -- not just for him, but for
just about any director. "What person who's working on a
film isn't, like, going crazy or working on it right to the
end?" he wondered. Most often, said Burton, the studio has
to "grab the film can from your clenched fist." Asked
about speculation on the Internet earlier this summer that
studio suits shot down a love scene between a human and an
ape -- played by Mark Wahlberg and Helena Bonham Carter --
Burton was incredulous. "Oh, my God!" he said. "What kind
of people are on the Internet? I mean, animal sex scenes? I
don't know if that's even possible in a Hollywood American
movie." Burton also talked about the ending of "Planet of
the Apes" -- but he didn't go so far as to give it away, as
Internet gossip Matt Drudge did. "It's totally out in left
field," said Burton, "and reminded me of those 'X-Files'
episodes that end so crazily, you're compelled to watch the
next episode to see how ... they'll explain it." According
to various reports in Hollywood, a sequel is contemplated.
------------------------------------------------------------
'PLANET OF THE APES'
Mark Wahlberg was at FAO Schwarz in New York Wednesday to
help Hasbro launch the action figures based on "Planet of
the Apes." Wahlberg greeted fans and autographed the action
figures, which are now available nationwide. The line features
figures based on the film's major heroes and villains,
including characters played by Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena
Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan and supermodel Estella
Warren. The movie opens in theaters nationwide this Friday.

Yes, I'm probably looking forward
to this more than anything involved with the new movie (this, the new "Behind"
DVD and Joe Russo's book). Waiting for extras is cool, I just don't want them to
put the new movie out on DVD first, decide it didn't sell enough and cancel this
(though I'm sure it will sell through the roof, the new movie is perfect for
DVD). I was blown away by how good the TV show clips looked on the documentary.
Yeah, yeah, I'm sure it'll be the same old show, but I liked it and so did
Roddy.

There's some interesting stuff in a
Burton interview with Empire Online yesterday (can be accessed from
Movieheadlines.com.
Of the DVD, he says 'no comment': "
I realise I do terrible commentary (tracks). I like a lot of extras on DVDs but
I'm of the era that like to watch things again and not know everything about
it."
Sequel? "I did think about it, but
the idea of me doing any of that right now, I'd rather jump out the window. I
swear to God!"
What he'd do differently: "I'd have
them give the f***ing greenlight at the goddamned beginning so that we're not
spinning our wheels for 6 months where there is no positive work being done.
That was the problem...That's why I love studio execs...literal minded people in
the movie industry, are the biggest joke of all. They're in the wrong business.
Making movies is like childbirth. You forget the pain of making a movie because
if you retained it, you'd never do it again".

Don't believe the new "Apes" DVD
will be out soon? Well, "Final Fantasy" come out, what, 2 weeks before? And it's
DVD is due Oct. 23. Even though it was a flop, they are going all out. They
reportedly even did a satire of the M. Jackson video "Thriller" with the F.F.
characters for it. Box office champ "Shrek"'s DVD will reportedly have ELEVEN
HOURS of extra stuff. Videos are no longer just an
afterthought.

Personally speaking, I know this is the case for me. I have a 3 year old son

it is a tiny one. There have been many times that my theater doesn't even get
a movie, like with the Exorcist Special Edition even though that movie was
number 2 in the box office for a week. So, absolutely I skip movies and wait
for the dvd. I don't really feel, however, this hurts the box office success
of a movie. I think the time a movie is released has a lot to do with its
success. Summer movies do the best then followed by winter releases.

I don't think DVDs hurt the boxoffice. First off, there really aren't that
many people with DVD players as compared to those that go to movies. Also,
VHS rentals have been around for over twenty years and they haven't hurt the
boxoffice.
The studios know how to hype movies as if you're really going to be missing
something if you don't see it right away, and today's multiplex theatres
almost guarantee you'll get a seat to the film on some screen.
When it comes to theatres, DVDs, video. . . . It's all good.

People who talk during the film and kick the backs of chairs and bring

I think Roddy was probably too busy
to do home movies on the TV show. Those schedules are brutal. I agree that video
cuts into the "have to see" factor of movies. That's why studios lure with FX
and epic scale, stuff that's diminished on video. But video also brings in a
tremendous amount, so perhaps it evens out.

I can imagine the casting director at the pre-production meetings: "Let's
get that guy who was the king of the Apes in all those Ape moves!" I'd
hate to think that Roddy's later career would emulate that of his screen
charecter Peter Vincent from "Fright Night".

Well, Roddy usually gives a good performance but his name in a movie is
not always a mark of quality. The guy was a workaholic and would take anything.
Did you see him in "Jungle Book 2" where he's this crazy leader of a chimp
society.

I saw
this movie last night called "Shakma" from 1990. In it a murderous
baboon
escapes from a lab and roams a research building, killing teenage
students.
Roddy McDowall played their teacher and he got cornered in a
elevator
where the baboon got him and ate his face off.
Poor Roddy!!

.htmlYou can blame the video age for the way people behave ( ahem) during movies. I
tend to think most people are use to talking during movies like they do at home
during a video. People with crying babies don't hear their own babies cry. We
never took our son to the movies until he was old enough to sit still. Even THAT
was a challenge when we took him to see the new APES film.

Oops. Not only can I type faster than I can think. I type faster than I
read.
But then again, no. I remember some rude people before they had video.
I don't know if there are more rude people or just less emphasis on manners.
I blame the break up of the home. Don't these people have fathers who'd
smack 'em when they get out of line? I'm sure mister cell phone in Canada
didn't. <.html

| Subject: Kevin Smith on Tim Burton's stealing...SPOILER!!!! |
|
.html SPOILER....
Some of you may have heard that Kevin Smith claimed that Tim Burton stole the
"Ape Lincoln" idea from one of his comic books. Here's what Kevin Smith has
to say about it....
BURTON
Lest anyone think some sort of holy jihad is brewing betwixt me and the
mighty Tim, I'd like to set the record straight here.
I've always enjoyed the films of Tim Burton to varying degrees. Nothing's
going to change that.
Yes - I worked on a 'Superman Lives' script that he shit-canned when he got
the gig helming it. Yes - I've told a very long-winded story about the saga
of 'Superman' at college gigs, comic book conventions, the Stern show, and on
Conan O'Brien (only when asked about it, though). Yes - I've signed many a
bootleg copy of my 'Superman Lives' script "Fuck Tim Burton," (with tongue
firmly planted in cheek).
But, no - I do not think the 'Planet of the Apes' ending was stolen from the
Jay and Silent Bob mini-series 'Chasing Dogma', nor am I thinking about
taking anyone to court. I called the similarities (which I believe are simply
coincidental) to the attention of my good friend Lou Loumenick over at the NY
Post and made a few jokey comments about being pissed and litigious that seem
to have been taken seriously by a slew of other news outlets (doesn't anybody
pick up a phone to confirm shit anymore, rather than just poaching a piece
out of another paper?). This story has gotten way out of hand.
If Tim, indeed, made that statement about never wanting to read anything I
created (although, in truth, the statement didn't come directly from his
lips; it was provided by the office of his publicist, Bumble Ward), that's
fine. I'll still be there on opening day for any Tim Burton movie, and I urge
you all to do the same. Because, whether he tells a coherent story or not,
he's still one of the most interesting (albeit testy, apparently) directors
working today. And that should always be supported.
So please, folks - let's drop the call to arms against the guy who gave us
'Beetlejuice' just because he's not a fan of my stuff. Shit, if you're gonna
go on the war-path against every motherfucker who doesn't care for my
particular brand of whimsy, you'll never have enough energy left to get your
asses to the theater on August 24th when 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'
opens. <.html

Well put Rory.
And who would want to own Shrek and all it's DVD added features if
they hadn't seen it first at the movies?

While
we're on the subject of DVDs, here's a question for the group.....do
you think
that DVDs are in any way hurting the box office performance of
certain movies?
For example, do you think that people will be inclined to
skip a movie
in the theater because it is so expensive, crowded, etc and
people know
that they will be able to watch it on DVD (probably with a
bunch
of extras)
in a matter of months.
Personally
speaking, I know this is the case for me. I have a 3 year old
son
and another
baby on the way in October, so I rarely get a chance to get out
and see a
movie. I had to make an exception for POTA and before that, the
last one I
saw in a theater was Hannibal. I am lucky to have a pretty nice
home theater
set up, so I am of the mindset that I can just wait to see
films
on DVD rather
than go out. Do you think that there are enough others like
me
to cut into
a film's box office take?
Matt
I don't
think DVDs hurt the boxoffice. First off, there really aren't that
many people
with DVD players as compared to those that go to movies. Also,
VHS rentals
have been around for over twenty years and they haven't hurt the
boxoffice.
The studios
know how to hype movies as if you're really going to be missing
something
if you don't see it right away, and today's multiplex theatres
almost
guarantee you'll get a seat to the film on some screen.
When it
comes to theatres, DVDs, video. . . . It's all good.

| Subject: Get Carter? |
.html
.html
Movieheadlines.com says that at
last night's U.K. premiere of "Apes", H.B. Carter said it would take a lot,
specifically money, to get her back for a sequel. For some, that's like Jar Jar
Binks being iffy for a sequel. Last I heard, the cast is required to do a sequel
if Burton signs on. Who knows anymore?
Given "Apes"' box office, Fox might
want to play it cheap. How about this? Stick with the location the first one
ended on and go with a whole new cast. Get a fresh new director in there, an up
and comer who's ready to blast off. Bring in Wahlberg for a few scenes to
establish continuity and hand the ball to another actor (like in "Beneath").
It'll be cheaper, Fox can spend the money on the movie and it might be a better
movie to boot.
