My local Target store is clearance pricing their ape figures. 12" Attar is
$13 (they don't have the talking one) and so is Thade. The Hasbro 7"ers are
$7. 'Tis the season, start looking around. Looks like stores are making even
MORE room for Harry Potter.

You speak wise words Rory.

My main gripe with PotA 2001 was how it all felt so rushed, 10
minutes into the movie we have gone from the Oberon spaceship to Leo
crash landing onto the planet. Then in under 3 minutes of escaping
from his capsule he's already encountered humans and apes alike,
another 5 minutes later he's caged in ape city! All this happening
and not hardly a change of expression or sense of bewilderment from
Mr Wahlberg.

How I yearned for more of a Taylor, Dodge, Landon type scenario
whereby he would at least spend some time exploring his new alien
surroundings, so that we the audience could start to sympathise with
his predicament and share his horror when he does finally encounter
the inhabitants of this world.

But no, it's a 2001 blockbuster so we have to have apes and action
straight from the off, just in case any of the younger members of the
audience start to get bored.

Having been a lifelong apes fan as most of us are I had waited for
this movie for over 10 years, I knew that to expect a truly wonderous
cinematic experience like the original would be expecting too much.
So I was happy to hope for a half decent, well written and
competently acted spectacle of a movie about my favourite subject
matter.

Oh well, nevermind. At least the kids are happy!

Point well taken, Daniel. What surprises me is that it's the longest
"Ape" movie ever but it seems like one of those 90 minute "get to the point"
movies (like "X-Men", which was about 95 minutes). It doesn't feel like a
full meal, but where does the time go? And truly, Wahlberg is the biggest
disappointment, and he's a good actor. That's why it kinda gets my goat that
his name is so emblazoned on the poster and now the DVD. Even Burton didn't
seem that interested in him.

  Hi Charlie, welcome!

People's opinions and favorites run the gamut here. I can see the flaws in some of the sequels and the TV shows and especially Burton's movie but I'm more forgiving than some fans. The best is the original Heston flick, but my personal favorite is "Escape". That was the first "Ape" production I ever saw but I also really love the story and the acting. That's the antithesis of Burton's movie, since it has the least production value yet manages to be one of the favorites for many. The Tv show was formulaic but I love the cast and just the wide variety of stories they were able to tell (in the time it took to do one movie). I'm looking forward to those DVDs more than the Burton one. I'm also more forgiving today because I got a lot of the "stuff" at clearance prices. High five, Alex!

Welcome to the group, Charlie. ;) Have a nice stay.

Anyway, my favorite Ape (although, some may not agree) movie is the newer
one. I'll probably get yelled at for saying that, but oh well. Next comes
Conquest, the original (yes, the ending is brilliant) Escape, Beneath,
Battle.

As for the TV shows, I'd have to go with the live-action one. It's more
'Apish' if you know what I mean.

I am hoping there are a LOT of deleted scenes that are PLACED in the DVD
where they were cut out and that these give the movie more length and make
more sense overall. I am also hoping that I direct the sequel and the
chances have about the same odds!

Joe,

I doubt that one was directed at you personally.

I am 36 and I liked ALL the ape films a lot more when I was younger. Upon
re-watching them recently (they only came out on video in Australia in
1994!!!!!), I was looking at them from an older, more critical angle and I
was ALMOST embarrassed by some of the films (and quite BORED by Conquest).
I was bitterly disappointed by the Burton effort, but as I have said before
my standards are low because I am a POTA fan and we are used to getting
rushed rubbish. With a budget like that, Burton directing and all that time
to get it right though, there was no excuse this time.

The only film I could get on video in younger years was Beneath in around
1978 and that was in Beta (I still have it!). I ordered the complete set
from a video add in a US magazine, but 3 months later my dad's cheque came
back with a note:

It would cost too much to cash this bank cheque as it is not drawn on a US
bank. You cannot play the tapes anyway because they are recorded on a
different system.

That hurt.

I spent much of my youth scouting toy stores, book stores and other weird
places (like Bike stores would you believe!) for anything apes. We got very
little around here. When I began to collect apes again a few years ago, I
was under the impression that it would be quick and easy because while the
average price of anything POTA was around $100US, there was not a very big
list. WRONG!!!

I think I'll keep this e-mail as my "Welcome to the group" blurb.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the group, Joe and Charlie.

Hey Charlie. . . . How did you manage NOT to know the ending of PLANET when it's right there on the cover?

Anyway, PLANET is my favorite because IT'S THE BEST, OF COURSE!!!   Also, I saw it when it first came out in '68 (when I was eight), and so it's my all-time favorite film.

I would rate the films this way. . . .

1. PLANET
2. ESCAPE
3. BENEATH
4. CONQUEST
5. BATTLE
6. The TV Show
7. The cartoon series

I think Boulle's novel is better than the original movie, and if you've never read it, well I suggest you do.

As for the new movie. . . only saw it once, trying to forget, will probably look at it again on DVD -- RIGHT AFTER I WATCH THE ORIGINAL AGAIN!

Now that Alex is bored to death reading this, I'll close.

  Quit nuking Alex, Rory!

Here is the top films of 2001, according to "The Hollywood Reporter" (through last weekend). They consider films released at the end of the year part of the next year's, since that's when they do the most business. I guess that means we don't have to worry about such heavyweights as "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" (wouldn't it be funny if everyone was sick of "Harry Potter"?).

 1. "Shrek"                 - - - - $263 million

 2. "Grinch" (Rick Baker)      - - - - $260  m.

 3. "Cast Away" (William Broyles)      - - - - - $233 m.

 4. "Rush Hour 2"                                  - - - - $206 m.

  5. "Mummy Returns"                       - - - - $ 201 m.

  6. "Pearl Harbor"                   - - - - - $197 m.

(Note: worldwide, "Pearl Harbor" is the top movie of the year with $432 million)

  7. "What Women Want"         - - - - - $182 m.

  8. "Jurassic Park 3"                 - - - - - $177 m.

  9. POTA  (if you don't know what those initials stand for, you haven't been paying attention)          - - - - $174 m.

 10. "Hannibal"                               - - - - - $165 m.

The same "Hollywood Reporter" says "Apes" has collected $143.3 million outside the U.S. so far (that creates a combined "he he he" - worthy $317 million). Maybe it would have done better, though, if it was "What 'Apes' fans Want".

The new "Star Log", though with emphasis on "Star Trek"'s 35th Anniversary, has Burton and Wahlberg interviews, plus an article about what celebrities think of their action figures. Linda harrison likes her Medicom's body but doesn't think the face is a good likeness. Says her friends and family get a bigger kick out of it than she does. Cary Tagawa notes the Krull figure (not yet released) is the only one with 2 swords and dubs it "very cool".

U.K.'s "Sight and Sound" has a good 4 page analysis of Burton's film. More on that later.

I'm sure he meant Beneath the Planet of the Apes, but of course we get the
reference.

It was on sale at Suncoast for about two weeks, now it's not. The sale is
at Target now. I'm a sale hopper (but I'll probably never buy the 12"
Wahlberg even if it drops to $1! ). I like the 12" Attar (not the talking

anyone seen any pictures of the upcoming 12" Thade. Rory, please forgive me!

I saw this film in a theatre and kept waiting for the payoff.  Unless I missed something, it never came, and so all the rest was rendered a waste of time -- for me anyway.   A forgettable film.

You should clean that out with some bleach. Throw some some ammonia in to

My local Toys R Us still has the Hasbro 7" original figures (Cornelius, Zauis, etc.). Never had a clearance sale. They've just sat there for 2 years. Target sold them off at the end for $2 a pop. I was able to build a gorilla battallion.

Hey, where have those "Apes" Band-Aids been seen?

I really haven't seen much "Apes" this summer, not that I've been scouring the countryside. Back before the release, back when I still had hope it would be a great movie, I was looking forward to "Ape" notebooks, knick knacks, etc. But there wasn't the amount of stuff that accompanied "Star Wars', "Godzilla" and now "Haarry Potter".  I was thinking we could do a round-up of the merchandise people have seen for the new movie, whether in stores or on e-bay. I guess I'll start:

action figures: Hasbro 7" (Leo, Daena, Limbo, Attar, Ari, Thade on horse; Wave 2 coming). 12" (Attar, Leo; Daena and Thade coming); 12" Talking Attar

cards: Topps has a set plus many subsets

Tower exclusives: Attar cookie jar, Attar 10" bust, lunch box

Suncoast : 2002 calendar, wall clock, Attar snarling key chain, various shirts and hats, coffee cup, sticker set, shot glasses, mug, another lunchbox

Lunchbox: besides the Tower and Suncoast lunchboxes, I think there's 3 more (5?)

CD Cardz: Don't know what these are but they're $25 each and are like CD Roms. Limbo, Daena, Leo, Attar, Krull, Thade and Ari (7). Available at www.serioususa.com

books: Making of, novelization, kid's novelization, Leo's log (sounds like a "Boogie Nights" book)

high end: There's a slew of high end stuff that I've seen order forms for (letter openers, statues, "wall scrolls", etc.). Easy enough to track down. Here I'm more interested in the off -the -beaten track things.

Dark Horse: comic book series, graphic novels, "Pop Up People" (they even did a "Simpsons" set for the "Apes" parody)

That's just off the top of my head. Anyone who has items to add, I'd like to do a listing of Burton "Ape" collectibles. I know there was suposed to be a line from Applause that was unveiled at Toy Fair but the company had troubles and cancelled it.

Hey everybody!
Just got back from my trip. Although it seems someone broke into my house and used my computer, and I received a bomb threat from Rory, everything here seems to be fine. Pretty strange uh?

You do believe me don't you?

Well anyway it's good to be back.

Best.

It came in the form of a postcard shaped in the image of an Alpha Omega Bomb and delivered by some guy in a mutant costume. Pretty scary stuff.

You won't find them everywhere yet like JP III and Star Wars, Jar Jar
bandages. I found them at Walmart. They were on the top shelf, so if
someone has grabbed the first 2 or 3 and they haven't restocked, you can't
see them but they're back there.

For those who want to experience the original for the first time, there's
always the Landon School of Film Appreciation taught by Dr. Zauis. It'll
just leave a little scar, hardly noticeable.

Back on February 8 1968 a little movie called "Planet of the Apes" premiered. Since then the big sci-fi movies have become too important to release on such a insignificant day. Instead we get them during the peak months of summer and Christmas, when kids are out of school. Yet, the remake of "Rollerball" (postponed from August) and the remake of "The Time Machine", originally supposed to come out at Christmas, are now scheduled for February 8 2002, POTA's 34rth anniversary. Who'da thunk it?

I'm sorry to hear that "The Time Machine" now won't be out until Feb. 8th.  I'm kind of looking forward to this one.  I know that the "Rollerball" remake got pushed back because it's supposed to be REALLY BAD!  I hope that the reason for the postponement of "T.T.M." is because the competition during December was too great.

The reason "The Time Machine" got postponed is they have to reedit. It ends with stuff raining down on New York. If the original POTA was going to come out now they'd have to postpone it too.
