Kirk WAS sexier, but oddly both men are bald.  Shatner just won't give it up.   Of couse, Chuckels has and still has the same problem.  Shatner and Heston, along with Burt Reynolds, just must be REALLY funny-looking without their rugs.

Why am I talking about this?

Mutant bats is pretty close to something Moench & Ploog would have come up
with, so it's classic Apes in my opinion!

Any chance of someone listing the specifications for the PC game? I'd quite
like to know if I can play it or not!

You'd probably be healthier just playing with yourself, if you know what I mean.

I talked with Joe Russo about this book (He got a copy), and he says most of the info in it was got through interviews with Mort Abrahams.  As such I think it's worth getting, and I will as soon as I can.  Maybe Alan could send me a copy in exchange for that copy of "Planet of Men" I promised long ago?

Sounds pretty good. But once again they presume the makeup test sold it
and that's not true. My local Borders doesn't have it or "Planet of the Apes
Chronicles" but they have plenty of copies of "An Unofficial Companion" and
"Revisited". More than they did when the movie was out (and more copies of
them than they do of the new movie books). They've obviously reordered.
Virgin has a display of the books still. And the DVD and VHS of the original
are in ample supply. (The DVD is like #13 in sales at my Tower video). No
hide nor hair of the video game yet.

I don't know about throwing them off the lot but Zanuck got just as tired
as everyone else hearing about "Apes" from Jacobs and Mort. The ONLY reason
it got made was Jacobs' clout (as told in POTA Revisited). It's not like
every time they walked into Zanuck's office he'd give them a hug and say,
"Someday we're gonna get this made, boys", as perhaps Zanuck would have us
believe. But he does deserve some credit that Fox was the studio that
eventually made it.

"Veetus" was/will be a feature in "Ape Chronicles". There's also a drawing
of him in Luiz Adami's book "The Only Good Human Is A Dead Human", so I
guess he was published.

Yeah, it must be remembered that the March 1966 make-up test was a success BUT Fox still had cold feet.  It was the boxoffice that "Fantastic Voyage" did in the fall of '66 that got the ball rolling on APES.

I gambled on APES today and won.  I was in a local Target store and saw they were selling the DVD of PLANET for $19.95.    Remember that both my DVD copies from last year had the chapter listing from BENEATH in the booklet with PLANET.   Well, I bought PLANET again and helloo! there's the chapter list for PLANET.  Also the lastest pressing of the picture and logo on the DVD looks better --  not as red and contrasty.   So, Fox got a little more of my money today.   I forgot all about looking for the video game.  Maybe tomorrow -- I still haven't seen a certain issue of Starlog.

I picked up the new "Schlock" DVD today, a perfect companion to "American Werewolf". Separated by a decade, both were directed by John Landis with makeup by Rick Baker. "Schlock" is Baker's first movie and it's about an ape (played by Landis) to boot. Also has an extended cameo by John Chambers as a general and a special guest ape-pearance by an actual POTA pullover mask. The DVD has audio commentary by Landis and Baker.

Yeah, "Schlock" is out. There's a big push for "American Werewolf" but
they only had one copy of "Schlock" (it too mentions Baker's POTA on the
cover. The commentary is fun though not very informative, just Landis and
Baker bantering. It's a neat addition to a POTA collection, with a guy
wearing one of the famous pullover "Ape" masks in a scene, and Chambers is
funny as the Reserve captain (I didn't realize Baker plays one of his men).
The movie is actually funny in a corny way and the end reminds me of Baker's
"King Kong" from a few years later.

Just tell Michael to look up "Twilight Zone: the Movie" in a reference book.

    Hi Apemonsterman,

Funny thing, I just answered some questions about this issue last night to a fello making a tv documentary in the UK.

Here's the gist of the e-mail:

    Dev Varma wrote:

       Dear Brian Penikas

My name is Dev Varma and I'm a Producer with Pioneer Productions, an
independent film company based in the UK.  We have been commissioned by the
Discovery Channel to make a 1-hour documentary about the Sasquatch/Bigfoot.
We are a company with a long, award-winning record of scientific films.  I
intend this documentary to be similarly rigorous and not 'fanciful'.

BP:  Very good.  Ever since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by Bigfoot, Nessie, and the Yeti.  They still fascinate me today.
We've made bigfoot suits and footprints for shows before.  I think there is a Taco Bell commercial running now.  They are always fun.
Any help I can be to your project, please let me know.

The reason I am writing to you is because I want to find out more about the
film shot by Roger Patterson in 1967.  I know that some people regard it as
a clever hoax by the designer of the original Planet of the Apes movie.
However I also read that you filmed John Chambers specifically denying this
       charge.

BP:  True.  After the APEMANIA troupe performed at John's 75th birthday party, we went back to visit him
a few weeks later to meet and chat with him out of costume.  Writer Scott Essman video taped the entire visit and John talked
about his CIA days as well as the Patterson Bigfoot suit.

He did state that he could, with all composure, honestly admit that he had nothing to do with the Patterson suit, and if he and his
crew had had a hand in it, they would have made it look more believable.  Then he laughed, leaving us all to wonder.

He did admit to making the Hollywood Bigfoot "BODY" for a traveling carnival "oddities" show.  He explained how he and his
crew made a plaster casting of actor Richard "Jaws" Keil and just modified it into a dead body of a Bigfoot.  It was so heavy, it
took a crane to load the thing onto a flatbed truck to deliver to the clients.

Much of the Patterson / Chambers connection can be attributed to that dead carnival Bigfoot body, as I believe it was made during
that whole late sixties Bigfoot craze.

I don't know if John Chambers is still alive and , if so, whether you can
       help me to contact him.

Unfortunately, John recently passed away on Saturday, August  25th, 2001 at age 79.
I was honored to speak at his memorial service, albeit as tongue-tied as I was.
He was a great man and an incredible inspration to many of us.

Generally, do you know of any designer (of course
it may be you!) who can talk about the difficulty (or otherwise) of creating
       a 'Bigfoot costume' in 1967.

Sure, I could tell you that it was very possible to make such a suit back in that day and time.  We'd already seen many man-ape
suits in 2001 A Space Oddessy, eventhough those were hair suits over regular human forms.  The same type of hair suit could be
made to fit over a "muscle-suit" like some of the great old Hollywood Gorilla costumes from Tarzan and Three Stooges type
films.  The techniques had been in place for decades prior to the Patterson film.  Rick Baker perfected the technique with films
like Greystoke, Gorillas in the Mist, and Harry and the Hendersons (I think it was released as "Bigfoot and the Hendersons" in the UK).

Remember too, that Patterson didn't just "happen" to find Bigfoot while out on a fishing trip, he intentionally set out to find
Sasquatch, the only person ever to actually find one when he was hunting for it.  It's so much easier to find something when you
    bring it with you.

I have always been a believer in the Bigfoot, Nessies, and Yetis of our world.  There is a great romanticism surrounding these
legends.  As a kid, I lost many a nights sleep at my dad's friend's ranch on the edge of Bigfoot country.  Footprints had been found
less than three miles outside of town and the local eatery was even called the BIGFOOT BARB-B-QUE PIT, proudly displaying a
casting from one of the footprints.

I slept on a couch beneath a huge curtainless picture window at this ranch. Everytime a toad, rabbit, or bobcat walked by that
window crunching twigs under its feet, I expected to see old BF himself staring in at me.  There also was a small place upstream
from the ranch that was a sort of wild animal farm.  Every now and then after a strong rain, the lions would sometimes get out of
their pens when the fences gave way and they would wander downsteam  grunting and groaning.  That didn't help my overactive
    imagination and sleepless night any!!!
I could never pray for the sun to come up fast enough on those trips!!!

Anyway, hopefully someday someone will solve the Bigfoot mystery.  Until then, I'll steer clear of first floor picture windows up
    north.

Best of luck with the show!

    .htmlMichael,

Back during the making of "Twilight Zone: the Movie" (I think in 1983), John Landis directed a segment with Vic Morrow, the father of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.  It took place in Vietnam and involved Morrow trying to carry these two little Vietnamese kids across a shallow river while their village was being bombed by American helicopters.  Landis kept directing the helicopter to come in lower.  He wanted a really spectacular shot.  The shooting took place at night and the two Korean kids were working illegally.  Landis didn't care: he didn't want Morrow carrying dummy kids, he wanted real kids.  Anyway, he also wanted the explosions to be bigger, and what happened was the blades of the helicopter melted from the heat of the explosions.  The copter came down and took off the heads of Morrow and the two kids.  It was an accident, BUT Landis, being the director, WAS responsible.   But what outrages me was right away he tried to weasel out of it, taking no blame and ever worse getting all his 'friends' in the industry to defend him.  It seems no one in Hollywood really wants to be too responsible for accidents on the set.  Landis went to trial -- with a snotty, shit-eating grin on his face everyday.  He was acquitted -- some say because the jury was so wowed by the celebrities that came to defend him, and also because he had some very high-priced lawyers.

Landis should have been a MAN and taken responsiblity for what happened and the consequenses.  But the egos of those who are successful in Hollywood won't allow that.  They're special and don't go to prison.  Landis put on quite a performance on the stand, crying like a pussy.   The man is nothing but an overaged adolescent jerk.  It was also reported that on the night of the filming Landis was high on coke.  Also Landis, in keeping with his wonderful character, said at the time that his prosecution was partially motivated by antiSemitism.   WHAT A GUY!

The incident did pretty much wreck Landis' career as a director, but what's that?

Yeah, I've never read of Landis being involved with any of the APES revivals.  If he had been I'd have gone ape-shit!

One of the reasons I'm so hostle towards him is that I really liked some of his early stuff.  Now I have to look at it with very mixed emotions.  Oh well, that's Hollywood!

.htmlTo anyone who doesn't mind spending $15, or can rent it, I highly recommend the DVD of "Planet of the Vampires."  I bought it yesterday, and just looked at it tonight.  This is a low-budget Italian Sci-Fi/horror film from 1965.  The print is beautiful.   The film isn't great, but it's also not bad.  It has the look of "Barbarella," but is a serious film.   Anyway, the title is cool, and the movie is interesting to watch.

There was a magazine around '91 that was mentioned in the "Ape" comics of that era. It said that Rifkin was having trouble getting his "Ape" movie made (which I understand to be true: Fox was hot for it then when Joe Roth became head of Fox he turned a cold shoulder to it). This magazine said Rifkin was bringing in Landis as a producer to give the project more clout. I was wondering if this were true.

I asked Rick Baker about it but he'd never heard of Landis being involved (Baker got involved in the later Stone age). Since Baker and Landis seem to be buddies I would think he would know. Then again, maybe not.

I seem to vaguely remember that either the "Six Million Dollar Man" or "The Incredible Hulk" had episodes back in the seventies where they fought 'Bigfoot.'    Either Richard Kiel or Ted "Lurch" Cassidy played Bigfoot, wearing gorilla appliances from APES.   I may be confused on this.  I'll have to look into it.

Jeff's unsuccessful attempt at humor, albeit well intended, has spooked quite a few ape fans who are flooding us with e-mails asking if the rumor is true.  It ain't folks.

Jeff was just joking about the success of Jeepers Creepers and international interviews we've been getting of late making the
lab too busy to pursue Apemania merchandise and manufacturing.  This is not the case.  If the lab gets busier with feature film work, it just gives us more people to make more apes in their down-time.  We have no plans to abandon Apemania (our true love) and as we speak E Entertainment television and other media sources are talking to us about more tv spots.

So stay calm when Jeff speaks, and like many of you have, go to the source when when the rumors start flying.

All is well and we are looking to have a fun Halloween season, and hope you all will too.

And if Jeff falls for the ol' burning bag of dog poop on the doorstep gag this Halloween, I had nothing to do with it!

    Hey Brian,

I've had some time to do some research on the Internet Movie Database.

You're right, Andre the Giant was Bigfoot on two 1974 episodes on "The Six Million Dollar Man."  Yes, it was just a hairsuit and goofy teeth.   BUT, Ted "Lurch" Cassidy also played Bigfoot in two 1976 episodes of "The Bionic Woman."

As for my memory of an actor wearing gorilla appliances on an episode of a seventies' TV show, this is what I remember. . .  It was a gorilla, not a bigfoot, and it was as if Ursus had just walked out of the sauna scene in BENEATH: an actor in a bulky gorilla suit, but with a John Chambers' gorilla APES make-up on his face.   As for what show it was?   Hey, it could have been "Wonder Woman" for all I know, I just know I saw it.  Maybe Tom Burman did the makeup for the show, so that's how they could use the APES makeup.

Something else I remember from the seventies you might find interesting.  In 1979, CBS did a TV movie revival of "The Wild, Wild West" called "The Wild, Wild West Revisted."  In it, Shields and Yarnell played these two bionic beings belonging to Dr. Miguelito Loveless, Jr.   Part of the costumes they wore were the gorilla black leather vests from APES.  They must have gotten them from Western Costume.  Dr. Loveless, Jr., by the way, was played by Paul Williams.

Some of you may remember that I've reported that the actor who played Dodge in PLANET, Jeff Burton, died on January 18, 1986.   I got that info from the Internet Movie Database.

But I've just learned from Joe Russo, who got it from another APES fan, that the actor who played Landon in PLANET, Robert Gunner, died in September 1992.   He quit the business after doing PLANET, lived in Paris for a few years, then came back.  I don't know yet any further details, like what he died of.  This info comes from his agent.

This fan that Joe Russo has talked to also says that Dianne Stanley, who played the sleeping Astronaut Stewart in ONE SHOT in PLANET, has resurfaced in California, AND IS DOING CONVENTIONS?!!!

Go figure!   I just thought you'd all like to hear something other than the sorry news of the day.

    Just a small tidbit -

UbiSoft is also creating a PotA game for the GameBoy Color (which is
different from the GameBoy Advance). It will be released on 11/28/2001 in
North America and on 11/30/2001 in Europe. So, that makes 4 PotA games - PC,
    Playstation, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance.

Just thought I'd let you know. :) (You can play GameBoy Color games on
    GameBoy Advance, too.)

    Hey,

There is also mention of a very poorly scripted version of an old fave of mine - Planet of the Apes!!!!  You know, the one that was destroyed.....I mean re-imagined (apologies to John Lennon) by Tim Burton.  I think it was Tim's last effort before he joined drug rehab.

Wow!  I didn't read that.  Burton WILL now do a commentary?  Oh, boy!   This is going to be interesting.  Now I'm a little more interested in this DVD.  Who's Burton going to blame?   Well, I can listen to him talk about how great the original was for hours, so hopefully there'll be a lot of that.

Burton commentary is usually pretty bland (he talks through "Sleepy Hollow", "E. Scissorhands" and, with Paul Reubens, "Pee Wee"). Even Burton admits that, that's why he said at first he wouldn't do one for "Apes". But I guess Fox says this is his best commentary ever. Let's see...Burton said he wouldn't do a commentary and now he is. Burton said he wouldn't do a sequel..

Yes, they are extremists, but we're talking apes here, so I have some sympathy.  And I am a believer in that apes should have close to the same rights as humans -- that being mostly the right to be left alone.  I just don't go crazy about it.

The only character that really changes is Daena.

Now hold on I know what you're going to say . . . What about Limbo?
Limbo's change is just more salesmanship. He should work for Fox.
What about Attar? He's still the same guy. Only his point of view changes
      when he learns the truth.
Daena on the other hand wouldn't even drink out of the same canteen as Ari in
the beginning. After she realizes all Ari's done for her, she's willing to
suck the monkey slobber from Leo's face with her fish lips! Okay, maybe her
feelings for him had something to do with it, though I can't imagine why.
      The guy's a bit of a jerk.

TRIVIA: Who was the first person to win an Oscar for makeup?

ANSWER: William Tuttle received an honorary Oscar for "The 7
Faces of Dr. Lao" (1964). The only other recipient of an hon-
orary makeup award was John Chambers for "Planet of the Apes"
(1968). It became a regular competitive category in 1981.

Very much still here, just kept my head down while Rory and Alex
      slugged it out!

PotA 2001 has all but disappeared from theatres here (UK), probably
so that they can push the DVD at Christmas. I hated the remake (sorry
re-imagining) but I just know that some unknown force will make me
part with my hard earned cash for it. Oh sequel please reward my
      undying faith!!!

Had you not given the answer I would have said the Oscar perhaps went
to whoever it was that did Karloffs makeup for Frankenstein, but then
again did they have the Oscars back in the thirties?

Could anyone tell me if there have been any in depth articles
published anywhere such as Cinefex or anything like that, concerning
      the career of Janos Prohaska.
Who of course played and designed some of the monsters for the 1960's
show the Outer Limits and Star Trek as well as various gorillas and
      chimps on television.
