.html Hey Daniel,

Jack Pierce was the much over looked make-up master who career began in 1927 and designed most of the classic Universal monsters like Frankenstein.  One of his last professional gigs was doing the horse's make-up on Mr. Ed tv series in the 1960's, which he wasn't too thrilled about from what I'm told.  How soon Hollywood forgets.

Had you not given the answer I would have said the Oscar perhaps went
to whoever it was that did Karloffs makeup for Frankenstein, but then
again did they have the Oscars back in the thirties?

Pericles changes: At the beginning, Leo makes a monkey out of him. By the
end, he's a better pilot than Leo.

Thade changes: At the beginning he believes humans don't even have a soul;
judging from the end, he was able to embrace human technology.

Of the first 3 makeup Oscars given out, two were for POTA makeup creators:
John Chambers and Rick Baker.

One of the things John Chambers said is we should petition for retro-Oscars
for the greats like Jack Pierce ("Frankenstein") who didn't get the
recognition they deserved but made the Oscars that are being awarded today
possible.

Hey, Brian..

I was just gifted with a pull-over mask. It was sold in the store, I think...my source isn't too helpful.   On the back it has: 1968/1995 POTA exclusive release...ahh, I can't remember the rest!!!  I'm at work right now.  Any clue as to how much this is worth?  More importantly, how do I restore it (it's not in too bad of shape), and how do I keep it restored?  Has anyone else seen this gorilla mask?  Maybe it was sold for Halloween or something?  The only thing open ifs the eyes, the nose and mouth are sealed and there are sponges inside.  Now all I need is a standing 'head' to put it up!!

.html Hi Lynne,

Does the mask have paint on it or is it just gray latyex and hair?  Image Exclusives put out two very cheap Gorilla Warriors that I believe were made in Mexico in the 90's.  Slightly over-sized and little to no paint at all, one with hair, one without.

If that's the one, people un-load them from time to time on e-Bay for $15-$40.

Yeah, and one of the problems with their using their own suits is that the naked orangs in CONQUEST don't match the orangs in jumpsuits.

I think Brian is right that it is one of these.  I too have one and it has those little foam squares.

I saw one on ebay a couple of years ago selling for $750!!!!  I emailed the bidder with a link to a site where they were selling the same mask for $55 (John's Collectibles or something).  There was some serious targeting and bid inflating going on.  Anyhow, the guy withdrew his bid and the mask sold for $22.

This guy has turned out to be a great pal and has sent me a lot of pressies from Japan.

Hi Lynne,

Does the mask have paint on it or is it just gray latyex and hair?  Image Exclusives put out two very cheap Gorilla Warriors that I believe were made in Mexico in the 90's.  Slightly over-sized and little to no paint at all, one with hair, one without.

If that's the one, people un-load them from time to time on e-Bay for $15-$40.

1927 - 28.  There must be a website someplace with everything you'd ever want to know about the Academy Awards.

As for Movie and Video guides, without question Leonard Maltin's is the best.  Back before 1985 they only credited Rod Serling with the screenplay for PLANET.  Of course I wrote them a letter reminding them of who Michael Wilson was and that the final screenplay for PLANET was his.  They started crediting both writers the next year.

I can't wait until next year's issue to see how many stars and what they say about POTA (2001).  For me, that will be the final word on the movie.  I predict it will only get two stars.

And if anyone plans to visit and take the statue home with them you'll need to bring the following:

    • several jack-hammers
    • a large crane
    • a large flatbed truck
    • an army battalion to fight off security
    • and $2.00 for parking
    Good luck,

    Hey Daniel,

Jack Pierce was the much over looked make-up master who career began in 1927 and designed most of the classic Universal monsters like Frankenstein.  One of his last professional gigs was doing the horse's make-up on Mr. Ed tv series in the 1960's, which he wasn't too thrilled about from what I'm told.  How soon Hollywood forgets.

The news paper here gave it a C+. I've found that seems to be the consensus
all the way around. About a * * 1/2. The only time it's been given a three

The "Batman" DVD is okay, not great.  The history of the Batmobile could have been better.  It's nice that Fox has put out this DVD, but it's also appearent they didn't want to spend too much money on it, so while it's nice, I wish there was more.  I'd suggest trying to find someplace where you can rent this DVD, however if you really love the old Batman show it's a DVD you'll want to own.

Believe it or not, gang, I went and saw "Rock Star"!   Not a good movie, but I will tell you this. . . Wahlberg was WASTED in APES!  The guy can act.  Oh, he's still green, but there's something there.  Why he was given nothing to do in POTA 2001 I don't know, but then I'm still in shock really about how mediocre the new APES was.

If you want to pay for the "Making of" book, it has the script in there
(including stuff that got cut out). You can buy it for what it would cost
you to get the actual script. There's even a "Go Ape" poster in there
creditted to Brian Penikas. I'd like to find the original William Broyles

Ironically that same year, 1968, "Life" magazine did a cover story celebrating the 150th anniversary of the "Frankenstein" novel. That had a picture of Karloff on the cover with a cake and a bunch of candles. Arthur Jacobs had this issue, which is in his archives at Loyola Maramont University. He used it as research for his own planned "Frankenstein".

I am slowly re-reading and re-watching my POTA collection and wanted to be
sure I am not missing anything. If anyone notices anything missing from
list in terms of officially licensed POTA stories, I'd be very grateful if
you could let me know so I can track it down. Thanks!

    · The six movies, filmed TV series, and cartoons.
    · Pierre Boulle's source novel, plus novelizations of same.
    · Scripts to unfilmed episodes "Hostage" and "A Fallen God."
    · Gold Key Comics' adaptation of Beneath the P.O.T.A.
    · Marvel #1-29, plus...
    - Apeslayer storyline in U.K. issues #23-30, and
    - Adventures on the P.O.T.A. #11.
    · Adventure Comics #1-24, plus...
    - Ape City #1-4,
    - Urchak's Folly #1-4,
    - Ape Nation #1-4,
    - Ape Nation Limited Edition,
    - A Day on the Planet of the Apes Annual #1,
    - Blood of the Apes #1-4,
    - Terror on the Planet of the Apes #1-4,
    - Forbidden Zone #1-4, and
    - Sins of the Father #1.
    · Power Records' adaptations of four of the films, plus...
    - Mountain of the Delphi,
    - Battle of Two Worlds,
    - Dawn of the Tree People, and
    - Volcano.
    · British P.O.T.A. hardcover annuals, 1975-1977.
    · Dark Horse Comics' ongoing series, plus...
    - Film adaptation,
    - Dark Horse Extra #36-38,
    - Toys'R'Us Collector's Comic, and
    - The Human War #1-3.

In terms of fiction -- not reference or non-fiction books -- am I
overlooking anything? Specifically, does anyone know of any foreign
P.O.T.A. comics aside from the Apeslayer comics and the three hardcover
annuals (original stories, not reprints)? Anything else? Thanks!

It looks like you are missing the 7 tv series and cartoon novels. There are 4
from the TV series and 3 from Return. The 4th book from the tv series is hard
to find but you can eventually come across it. The 3 Return books are also
hard to find. I found all of them after looking online for 2 or 3 months at
www.abe.com (advanced book exchange), ebay.com, and amazon.com z shops. Good
luck if you don't already have them.

    OK

There was an Aussie Marvel series that stopped around the end of Escape. It
had the "Terror" and other associated stories but nothing completely
original. All the covers are from the

Also the UK did something similar but had a whole lot of original covers and
went to the end of Battle (I think).

Ken Taylor has an Argentinian (I think - it could be from Finland or
somewhere else) foreign language comic that has an original story line using
the TV Series characters. Ken, tell us more!

    DVD Releases:
Just got Terminator Special Edition and Mummy Returns.
Terminator is outstanding, two great behind the scene features and tons of production snap shots, storyboards, screen play, t.v. spots, the works!

Mummy Returns is great as well, a lot of extras, and a lot of promos for Scorpion King including scenes. But I have a feeling this movie is going to suck big time so no doubt I'll be waiting for the cable release on this one. I'm not to crazy about CONAN Sword play movies, they were okay with Arnie a couple of decades ago but I've pretty much out grown those macho sword flicks.

Yeah, I thought he wasn't too bad in the films he was in with Clooney.
I don't know what happened in Apes. He seem out of it. On the other hand,
Giamatti seemed way over the top. So was Roth but with a character like that
to play how can you not go nuts with it. Duncan just over enunciated too
much, but maybe he had to. There's a good argument for voice overs, which I
think they did a lot with Tokagawa. Warren was perfectly cast as a bitch
dumb blonde. Did anyone else notice that Ari's father was an albino? No
    pigment in his nails.

Wahlberg is good as young turks or rebellious characters. Plus his past
helps. I think he gets lost playing a conventional hero (come to think of
it, Burton gets lost when he has a conventional hero). Plus Leo was written
very bland. It's a no win situation.

Your really going to like this DVD Jeff.
It's not presented in the grander scale as T2 Special Edition but it has just as much content in a more simple interactive menu. One of the features felt like it was about 2 hours long and they cover every little aspect towards the evolution of the film itself. Really AMAZING stuff. Cameron was living off of McDonald coupons when gearing up to T1, (he's sure come a long way since then) and it interviews everyone involved in the film, from the actors to the makers 15 years later.

It's great to see another great DVD release like this!

          5.1 EX none justice:
Jeff when you have a chance listen to the Terminator scene when you see Reese shooting the Terminator through the glass window of the disco tech.
You'll notice that the original mono sounds a lot better than the 5.1 EX Surround Sound. Which only goes to show that not always 5.1 EX Surround is better than mono when it comes to sound effects. So for anyone who complains about the Original Planet of the Ape films in original sound, from the sequels to the T.V. Series, believe me it's not always a bad thing. If not done well, mono will always have the upper hand. (the only scene in Terminator that sounds bad in 5.1 by the way) the rest is pretty great. But never the less a key scene in the film that really sounds better in mono.

Also the deleted scenes are MIND BLOWING!
You'll find them as TERMINATED SCENES on the DVD.

Okay, enough for Terminator, I just wanted to clear up this dispute about 5.1 EX Surround transfers.

back to the theater to jack up the box-office receipts like a good little

even dozen now. You're turn! Though I fear time on this game is running
out. I had to drive to GrAPEvine to catch a showing. Soon I'll have to look
for it at the dollar movies. But even though it was the late show there were
more people in there than last time. So there's hope it may make 180 mil
yet! Who knows? It may have made the magic 200M domestic mark by the time
it leaves the dollar movies. Though even the 190s will be a tough climb.

I remember that issue.  I made my mother buy it for me at the grocery store.  "Life" magazine was great.  As I've said before, too bad Jacobs didn't get Karloff as a guest star for POTA.  Imagine if he'd played the President of the Assembly.

One of the reasons I was so hostile to this movie when I first saw it, I was nearly sure it was going to bomb at the boxoffice -- and I was pissed, BUT it's done fairly well.  It didn't set the world on fire, but it wasn't a bomb!  Praise the Lawgiver!

No, the Aussie ones are the same in content just thinner - similar to what
the UK did but not as small and no original covers.

I know that this "Terminator" Special Edition was released in Europe about six months ago, so YES it's probably what was released in Auusieland, too.   GET IT!  If you're so inclined.

The "Terminator" DVD was released in France first. I hear they remastered the sound and it doesn't work as well. For the U.S. release you can choose from either the remastered sound or the original. In stores Tuesday. What's this have to do with "Apes"? Well, Cameron, Schwartzenegger and Stan Winston were all involved with the new "Apes" at one time or another. So there!

One thing I noticed in the script is they give Attar lines that show he's
struggling with his faith and make him less of a one- note villian. When
Karubi (Kris Kristopherson) is killed in the movie, it's just a "monster
moment". In the script it's shown that Attar is impressed with his bravery
(Karubi is sacrificing himself so the others have a chance to escape). There
is a line that even made it into the talking Attar figure but not the movie:
"Why do you not tremble before me?" (Karubi's reply: "I'm done being
          scared").

The scene where Ari offers herself to Thade also includes an exchange
showing Attar questioning his society. I remember a reviewer commenting that
Attar's sudden change of heart at the end was too abrupt. These added
moments wouldn't have saved the movie but they could've helped. Fox is
promising 5 extended scenes on the DVD so I guess we'll see what might have
          been.

          Alex,

I finally have you beat, at least on theater screenings, unless you've been
back to the theater to jack up the box-office receipts like a good little
monkey.  Though I can only find eleven ticket stubs, I'm pretty sure it's an
even dozen now.

Well, you finally got me there T, I've only seen it 10 times.
May the great Semos forgive me. Last time I checked it was at 343 million worldwide. Not bad. By the time it's all said and done it should reach as high as 350 to 375.

Well, according to this POTA 2001 is almost at the $180 million mark.  T, you and Alex better get out to the theatres a few more times.

One of the reasons I was so hostile to this movie when I first saw it, I was nearly sure it was going to bomb at the boxoffice -- and I was pissed, BUT it's done fairly well.  It didn't set the world on fire, but it wasn't a bomb!  Praise the Lawgiver!

          So. . . Think there'll be a sequel?   LOL!!!!!!

          Yeah I saw that.
I wouldn't doubt there will be a sequel, I just hope it's as equel or better than the first. Not that the first was bad, it's just that sequels most of the time make less than their original. At least now they have plenty of time to think about a good sequel and plenty of time to make it without being rushed. If Burton doesn't do the sequel, I hoping Cameron would consider it.

          Best.

As I understood it, it had something to do with the same logic where they
wouldn't let Joe use any of the officially released publicity stills, or
sections from the original scripts, and so forth. But one can never be

Is that the same chronology that (for BENEATH) they used a still from BATTLE showing Kolp and Alma with the Alpha-Omega bomb? The same scene that isn't even in the U.S. version of BATTLE? This has gotta be the same person who put the Statue of Liberty ending on the cover of PLANET.

          Hello,

I would like to nominate the original 1968 version of PLANET OF THE APES for the National Film Registry, as I believe the film was very reflective of the American social and political climate of the time. What sets this film apart from others is that the political/social allegories are worked into the film rather than forced upon the viewer. You have to think about what you're seeing, and often the subtext becomes more apparent upon repeated viewings. I believe these elements make PLANET OF THE APES "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" as your website states.

I fully support any efforts that preserve American film heritage, and I thank you for your time and consideration.

So there!

I'm sure Burton has final cut by now but I think Fox would be pushing more
for a time limit. In the script it says that Attar is shocked by Karubi's
"nobility" and doesn't kill him; Thade comes by and finishes the job. In the
film Attar apparantly has no qualms about killing him. It's a "monster
moment", Burton has no concept of subtlety in villians, which is the
opposite of the original films. In that scene, the script was better than
          the final film.

I think part of it is Burton likes to avoid dialogue. In the scene where
Leo and Daena arrive to free Karubi, the writers had Karubi ask "Who are
you?', etc. Burton filmed it just with facial expressions, which I thought
was a good moment. It's give and take on the small points.

I think they will do the sequel because it's a bird in the hand. It's
shown there's an audience for it, and if it performed lower than hoped for
they can blame it on the movie, which it's no secret people were
disappointed with. Even Fox can figure that out. And filmmakers DO listen.
Anthony Daniels (C3PO) says the new "Star Wars" is much darker than "Episode
1" and Jar Jar is kept to a minimum because Lucas heard the fans.

Of course, that doesn't mean they won't come up with something else they
think is great and still disappoint. Great movies are accidents.

From what I understand, they were going to release Spielberg's "Minority
Report" as their big movie for 2001. At the last minute, Spielberg decided
to do "A.I." for Warners first, which left a hole in Fox's schedule. They
bumped up "Apes", announcing at ShoWest 2000 "Apes" would come out in 2001.
They didn't even have a script. Schedules rule the planet.

Someone said 2003 for the sequel. Again, that's a tight schedule. However,
I would grit my teeth and say it would be cool if they could make that, the
40th Anniversary of the book. Especially if they take their cue from the
film's ending and do a modern society. If it weren't for that I would say
don't even try, make it 2004.

Check this out. After Ari buries Krull's face with sand, and the screen

Yeah, it's usually a good idea to say things with a look instead of making
the film too wordy. It is, after all, a visual medium. But I didn't pick up
on the Attar/Karubi eye exchange until I read it in the book, which is based
around the script. Attars internal struggle is kind of a tough to read
without knowing what to look for and little exposition.

I'd sure like to agree with you.
But Fox has proved time and again they are no brain-trust.
I'm sure there are some smart people there, and they may listen to them.
But then they go ahead and do whatever stupid thing the were going to do.

Maybe it just didn't play well. Speaking of things that don't play
well...I'm glad they left in Heston's cameo. As much as I like Chuckles, the

          I gotta say I really liked A.I.

Maybe I am going soft but I thought it was brilliant. There was a very
obvious Kubrick influence and it was a very Spielberg movie too. Lots of
          people were reduced to tears.

It was chilling to see the 2 World Trade Centre buildings. Amazing, but
just like lady liberty in POTA, there is an assumption that such structures
          will always be there.

I hope they are going to rebuild the twin towers.

Yeah - that's what amazes me about deleted scenes.....just leave them there
so we can buy popcorn and take a whizz!!!

You know how they have the dots at top roght to change reels? Well, maybe
there should be two dots in the top right hand corner for scenes that are
not necessary so we know to rush out.

The people working at Fox Video just aren't knowledgeable APES' fans.  Twenty-three years ago I should have moved to California and tried to get a job with them, but I had no idea then that APES was in the kind of hands it's in.  At least the Aussies had Ken "Taylor!" (as if Nova were saying it).  As for the Statue of Liberty on the PLANET cover, I've talked about this before, but I was just thinking the other day that we really should blame the Fox of 1969-70.  I think it was a mistake to start BENEATH with the ending of PLANET.  That classic final image should only be seen at the end of the original.  But then, I don't think anyone had an idea PLANET was a classic back then; it was just one of Fox's bigger hits.
