think Ryan is a fellow Aussie. Ryan - do you have a mulit zone DVD?
If not, you will need it for the "Behind" special edition and the TV
Box Set.

Did you manage to find the 2 dvd set
of the Behind documentary yet? It is twice as good as the one with the box
set....Not only does it include the entire show that is on the dvd included with
the movie box, but also the Nato feature, featurettes, and dailies (out takes,
no audio on these though,) and the kicker, a very extensive interview with
Roddy.

It makes perfect sense. It's a mirror of our

There are none. "PotA & Dracula Lives" was a continuation of the PotA comic,
so kept the same numbering, all the way until the last issue, which was
number 123. The name changed but it was the same comic. Once this comic
finished, PotA continued as a story in Mighty World of Marvel, which was
already going at this point (and in fact had been going since before the
PotA comic). MWoM only changed its name to accomodate PotA's appearance
within its pages, but continued its own numbering rather than adopt that of
the now-defunct PotA comic.

Hi Jeff,
Happy Xmas. A friend at Fox sent me a copy of the TV series DVD box
set, but it was a screener version and not a finished set. Meaning it didn't
have the booklet and it says "for screening purposes only" on each disc.
So I don't know if the descriptions are the same. I doubt it. I advised
a friend at the Fox L.A office that Australia had produced packaging materials
for the TV series on VHS and all elements were sent to L.A but as I think
I've mentioned before, the domestic and International offices at Fox were
quite separate so I doubt the info or materials would have been either
requested or passed on. Not exactly a priority release for Fox. Just a
quickie to cash in on the hype of the movie.
Had I still been working at Fox when they were preparing the TV series
DVDs I would have offered my services and supplied photos of TV series
merchandise from my collection to create a some kind of gallery to show
the extent of the merchandise that was created for a show that only ran
14 episodes.
Best,
KEN

Our dollar is only currently worth about 51 U.S cents. The local
price for a DVD varies between AU$25 ( no features) to AU$45 ( for a double
disc). The DVDs are replicated locally but from European 'masters' which
often means that some special features featured on the U.S versions are
sacrificed to make room for european text subtitles. Shrek was only a single
disc release here. I buy most of my DVDs from Amazon in America as it often
works out to be the same price as it would cost me locally. Plus it's generally
sooner..for example POTA'01 isn't scheduled for a retail release ( generally
Fox release 'vanilla' versions to rental first before a special ed. retail
release) here until Easter next year. Speaking of which, a friend at Fox
sent me the U.S version of POTA'01 for Xmas. The special features certainly
make a shallow film more interesting, but I must admit I actually fell
asleep during the Burton commentary...and I was watching in the afternoon!

Michael
$40 for a DVD?!!
It that the average price? It's around $20 here. Isn't
the Australian dollar tied to the U.S. dollar, or is your money worth less?
And are your DVDs domestic or all imports?

Young Frankenstein is one of my favourite movies. The commentary by Brooks
is funny . Not that he's particularly funny, he keeps jumping around
all over the place and keeps interrupting his own stories. The Doco is
interesting.
Enjoy.

Hi Jeff, Happy Xmas. A friend at Fox sent me a copy of the
TV series DVD box set, but it was a screener version and not a finished set.
Meaning it didn't have the booklet and it says "for screening purposes only"
on each disc. So I don't know if the descriptions are the same. I doubt it. I
advised a friend at the Fox L.A office that Australia had produced packaging
materials for the TV series on VHS and all elements were sent to L.A but as I
think I've mentioned before, the domestic and International offices at Fox
were quite separate so I doubt the info or materials would have been either
requested or passed on. Not exactly a priority release for Fox. Just a quickie
to cash in on the hype of the movie. Had I still been working at Fox when
they were preparing the TV series DVDs I would have offered my services and
supplied photos of TV series merchandise from my collection to create a some
kind of gallery to show the extent of the merchandise that was created for a
show that only ran 14 episodes. Best, KEN

topic) Our dollar is only currently worth about 51 U.S cents.
The local price for a DVD varies between AU$25 ( no features) to AU$45 (
for a double disc). The DVDs are replicated locally but from European
'masters' which often means that some special features featured on the U.S
versions are sacrificed to make room for european text subtitles. Shrek
was only a single disc release here. I buy most of my DVDs from Amazon in
America as it often works out to be the same price as it would cost me
locally. Plus it's generally sooner..for example POTA'01 isn't scheduled
for a retail release ( generally Fox release 'vanilla' versions to rental
first before a special ed. retail release) here until Easter next year.
Speaking of which, a friend at Fox sent me the U.S version of POTA'01 for
Xmas. The special features certainly make a shallow film more interesting,
but I must admit I actually fell asleep during the Burton commentary...and
I was watching in the afternoon! Best, KEN

Hi Rory
and thanks for your concern.
The
bushfires actually came to within a kilometre of my back yard. A lot of my
neighbours were evacuated.
In
Sydney (about 3 1/2 hours drive North of me) things are REALLY bad. Many
homes have been lost - thankfully no lives yet.
Ken's
place would be safe as he is in the city. He is, however, visiting
relatives at a rural property at the moment so I hope his drive was safe as well
as the area he is in and his return trip.
We
still got a lot of trees here in Oz so when things burn, they burn. And
yes, most of the fires are suspected to have been deliberately
lit.
If they
find the bastards, they will have their backs to the wall if they go to
jail.

Hi
Rory and thanks for your concern.
The
bushfires actually came to within a kilometre of my back yard. A lot of
my neighbours were evacuated.
In
Sydney (about 3 1/2 hours drive North of me) things are REALLY bad. Many

.html SOME INFORMATION ABOUT OUR COMPANY:
Parallax Business Services only distributes legal credit repair information and financial business programs to thousands of individuals all over the United States. In doing so, we have developed a work-at-home program for individuals interested in the opportunity of earning an extra $500.00 to $1,500.00 per week working directly from the comforts of their own home, dorm or apartment. Our work-at-home program is an honest opportunity for you to earn a serious extra income without having to sacrifice a lot of your free time. All of the work that you will be doing is very simple and can be done from your desk or right at your kitchen table. As a home worker, you can work full or part time whenever you have the free time, mornings, afternoons or evenings. In addition, there is absolutely no experience necessary for you to participate in our program. Our work-at-home program is perfect for individuals interested in earning a serious extra income to help pay off of their bills! That's
right! If you have car payments, rent, mortgage payments, credit card bills, loan payments, etc...this is an excellent opportunity for you to supplement your existing income and start putting some extra money in your pocket! If you are interested, the following information will help to further explain the very profitable work-at-home program that we have to offer you.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Our program simply involves the folding and processing of pamphlets. YOU WILL RECEIVE A FULL $1.00 FOR EACH AND EVERY PAMPHLET THAT YOU PROCESS! What do we mean by process? It's simple...
FIRST: You will neatly fold the provided preprinted single-sided (8 1/2 by 11 inch) pamphlets into thirds [The pamphlet that you will be processing will be provided to you and will be printed on regular 20 lb. (8-1/2 by 11)
inch paper.
SECOND: You will neatly insert the folded pamphlets into the pre-addressed, postage paid envelopes [These envelopes will be sent directly to your home, dorm or apartment with customers' names and addresses already printed on the
envelopes along with postage already affixed to the envelopes].
THIRD: Lick and seal these envelopes and then send them out, directly to the customers.
It's that simple! You DO NOT have to pay any postage costs to send out these pamphlets. The pre-addressed, postage paid envelopes will be sent directly to your home, dorm or apartment. You simply fold the pamphlets, insert them in the envelopes and send them right out! Remember, all of the processing work can easily be done at your desk or right at your kitchen table! IMPORTANT: We do provide you with the actual pamphlet that you will be processing which is a sales pamphlet for our Credit Repair Manual. Our Credit Repair Manual is a best-selling financial product that many people are ordering and using to legally clear up their negative credit. And since the demand for our Credit Repair Manual is so OVERWHELMING, you will have the opportunity to process as many pamphlets as your schedule can handle! You can process 100...500...1,000 or even 1,500 pamphlets per week, week after week, month after month, year after year ... for as long as you wish to participate!
HOW MUCH MONEY CAN YOU EARN?
YOU WILL RECEIVE A FULL $1.00 FOR EACH AND EVERY PAMPHLET THAT YOU PROCESS! If you process 500 pamphlets you will receive a full $500.00..If you process 1,000 pamphlets you will receive a full $1,000.00...if you process 1,500 pamphlets you will receive a full $1,500.00...Etc! What's even better about our program is that you NEVER have to worry about the sale of our Credit Repair Manual in order to receive your $1.00 per pamphlet. Our program DOES NOT WORK ON COMMISSION! You will receive a FULL $1.00 for each and every pamphlet that you process REGARDLESS if any sales are made! Even if you process 1,500 pamphlets and no sales are made, you will still earn A FULL $1,500.00! It's simple, process 1,500 pamphlets, and receive A FULL $1,500.00 for your time and effort! Processing payments and additional processing materials will continue to arrive at your home, dorm or apartment for as long as you wish to continue participating in the program! That's right, you can always have
money coming in week after week because processing payments and additional processing materials will continue to arrive at your home, dorm or apartment for as long as you wish to participate! Honestly, there is NO GUESSWORK. Our program has been around for several years and is very successful!
FACT: Even working slowly, you could still earn a MUCH BETTER weekly income than most regular 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM jobs!
THERE IS NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR PROGRAM:
Anyone, young or old, male or female, anywhere in the United States can easily earn great money participating in our Pamphlet Processing Program! The reason why our program does not require any experience is simple...it does not take any previous experience to fold a pamphlet, insert it into an envelope, and seal an envelope. Plus, our program is especially beneficial for people who need to earn a serious extra income but might not have the spare time for a second job. As stated, just a few hours per day could possibly earn you well over $500.00 per week... NO JOKE! Just imagine how nice it would be if you could earn an extra $500.00 to $1,500.00 per week working from your home...no more annoying boss...no more hectic rush hour commuting...no more stressful 9 to 5 job...and no more headaches! FACT: Practically every type of person can benefit financially from our Pamphlet Processing Program. IMPORTANT: The information contained in our Credit Repair Manual is 100% Legal and Legitimate!
In fact, there are hundreds of lawyers and attorneys all over the country using this valuable information and charging people big money to remove negative and incorrect items from their credit files! However, our Credit Repair Manual explains how people can do the VERY SAME THING that these costly attorneys are doing except our credit repair manual shows people how to repair their credit FAST, EASY and for FREE without having to hire an attorney! Now is the time, there are TENS-OF-MILLIONS of Americans with bad credit that would probably love to receive our Credit Repair Manual! Therefore, if you are serious about devoting a few hours per week towards the opportunity of earning an honest extra income, our $1.00 Pamphlet Processing Program is PERFECT FOR YOU!
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE:
We will send you a Starter's Kit containing the instructions necessary for you to begin participating IMMEDIATELY in our Pamphlet Processing Program! Plus, your Starters Kit also contains your very own copy of Credit Repair Manual! That's right you can use our best-selling manual to legally clear up and repair any negative credit that you may have! This manual is included for becoming a member of our Pamphlet Processing Program! Therefore, to get started immediately, all that our company requires is a one-time refundable order-processing fee of only $45. Please understand, we cannot afford to send out a package of valuable materials to everyone interested in our program. And also keep in mind that once you process 100 pamphlets you will have already earned your $45 back and are left with an extra $55 profit!!! We must charge a small processing fee to ensure that only serious individuals intend to participate in our program. Keep in mind, you NEVER have to pay us any other fees
and you can participate for as long as you wish! This fee simply assures our company that you are indeed serious about our program and the opportunity to make good money working from your home. Sorry, we CAN NOT process your order form without the one-time processing fee since there are far too many serious individuals willing to pay this small one-time fee in order to participate in our high profit work-at-home program. Hey, POTA is still moving UP at the box
office. Last week is was #30, this week it's #29. "Jurassic Park 3" has dropped
out of the top 60. At this rate it looks like "Apes" will finally pass the $180
million mark. It's like watching paint dry but it's happening.
Video-wise "Apes" can't weather the
competition. For the week of Dec. 16 it was #7 in DVD sales, last week it was
#9. "Pearl Harbor", "Rush Hour 2" (the current #1), "Jurassic Park 3" and co.
are given it a slippery slope. But it still made more than it deserves. We did
our part, Fox, do yours and give us a good sequel.

You're confusing LORD OF THE RINGS with the Harvard
Lampoon spoof BORED OF THE RINGS--they changed "Tom
Bombadil" to "Tim Benzedrine", etc. And, hey, it ain't 300 pages
worth; it's only about 2 chapters or so. The fact that Sauron's ring
doesn't have ANY effect on him whatsoever is more than a little
hint that this Bombadil guy is more than he seems. I think that
Tolkien intended for us to conclude that Bombadil is an earthly
(or, "middle-earthly") manifestation of ERU, or ILUVATAR: the
"god" of his invented universe.
That's the impression I got, anyway, the 3rd or 4th time I read
LOTR.
Incidentally, despite the liberties this flick takes with its source,
it's a fantastic cinematic adaptation. At least we only have to wait
a year for the next movie! <.html

Earlier in BENEATH, Ursus asks Zaius, 'What's more dangerous
than famine?"
The humans in "the jungle" have been "eating up [their] food
supplies in the forest" and "migrating to [the apes'] green belts
and ravaging their crops".
The ape civilization is facing a catastrophe of MASS
STARVATION. Ursus is preparing to lead his army out into the
"once-Forbidden Zone" in order to obtain "new, improved,
feeding grounds", because his people will STARVE TO DEATH
unless they can find more places to grow/acquire food.
It's a matter of LIFE and DEATH. Ursus has probably declared
MARTIAL LAW... and here is a bunch of "peace-niks" barring the
way out of Ape City, dead set on preventing Ursus' emergency
mission.
From Ursus' perspective, the behavior of the protesting
chimpanzees is TREASON. The penalty for treason (in most
countries, including the U.S.A. through most of its history) is
death (remember Zaius warning Cornelius that he'll "hang for
high treason" if he persists in pointing guns in his direction?).
Ursus having his soldiers machine-gun unarmed civilians may
be HARSH, granted; but if he believes their actions are no less
than treason, then harsh or not, it makes perfect sense to
someone with his "bully" personality.
Ask yourself how many average Americans think that that
dumbass who went over to Afghanistan to fight for the Taliban
should be shot as a traitor? Probably more than a few! <.html

"Roddy #1", the famed outfit worn by Roddy McDowall throughout his ape
career. It's the one where the pocket was added for "Escape" so he could
conceal a gun. In the TV show it was Galen's outfit. The insert is vinyl and
you can't get a better look at it than watching the TV episodes on DVD,
there have been no alterations or modifications. It's the original Fox
prototype (hence the use of the vinyl insert instead of leather) with a Fox
label, not a Western Costume label.Has some sun fading but this is normal
for a costume of that age due to use of unstable dyes at the time. But this
is the real deal. Anyone who's interested can contact me at

The costume comes with pants but no feet. Thanks.

.htmlI took a peek at Weekly "Variety" to see how well POTA did. In the big
tussle with the dinos, it's currently the winner but not overall as we
thought. For the week of Dec. 14 - 20 POTA made $96, 922 (this is U.S.
theatres, not video) while "Jurassic Park 3" made $25, 190 . POTA's domestic
take overall is $179, 514, 481, it's international take is $178, 302, 073
for a combined worldwide of $357,816,554. Meanwhile JP3 had $181,171,875
domestic, $182,154,127 international and a rousing $363,326,002 worldwide.
Touche! "Lord of the Rings" has made $154.5 million domestic in what, 2
weeks? It's already almost caught up and I hear it's a better movie to boot.
Lesson learned this year: "FX pictures" (as Mr. Zanuck likes to call them)
can have interesting stories without scaring off the customers. The studios
have learned the right lesson this year, if only they'll listen.
Happy New Year to all and dust off those light sabers.

I was watching the TV series this weekend and in "Tomorrow's Tide" I noticed that the outfit McDowall wore didn't match -- the tunic was a different shade of green than the pants and the shoes were yet a different shade, almost brown. I find it hard to believe that McDowall wore the same complete costume from ESCAPE through to the TV series. Perhaps the same tunic, but I doubt the rest. Besides, Who Cares?!!! It's only his outfit from the original film that's a real prize, made with real leather. That's got to be worth thousands -- if it still exists. It was probably worn by David Watson in BENEATH. After that? I can see the change from leather to vinyl in ESCAPE and that along with the change they made in Cornelius' hair styling, giving him a 'Zira' curl in the back, which also ended up being the gorillas' hair style for the rest of the series and TV show, really bugs me whenever I
look at ESCAPE.
So, anyway. . . how much you think this guy thinks the outfit is worth -- not that I'm going to buy it.

.htmlI saw Lord of the Rings last night and I agree Rory, it had incredible FX
and a great plot which was well transferred to script/screen.
Difference being, they took thier TIME to DO it PROPERLY (they thought about
what they MIGHT do with the POTA sequel for about a decade, but then rushed
the business end).
I categorise POTA 2001 with Independence Day (except, sadly, I thought the
latter was more entertaining) as being a quick money spinner with no real
thought given to plot holes or levels of believability - just make the bucks
and sell the merchandise.
I hope somehow somebody intervenes and shows the reverence towards the
future of POTA as was shown to Lord of the Rings. But I doubt it. LOTR is
more popular and the fans would have strung the bastards up had they ruined
it in filming. Fox knows there are not enough genuine ape fans to make
enough noise about their abortion. Shame that.
I was actually actively comparing LOTR to POTA 2001 for most of the movie
and it was very sad. The visuals in LOTR also shat all over what Burton
came up with.
Anyway, let's hope if they green light a sequel they attempt to go for a
record production time (I think this is currently held by Cleoparta - 3
years in the making??) rather than first day Box Office takings.

Now see here, young man! For the record,
this was the prototype for all the others, the leather ones were manufactured by
Western Costume but the vinyl one was the original made by Fox. I didn't say it
was the only one Roddy wore (he had about 9 in rotation for the first film) but
it's unique, unique I say! And as far as I can tell, the top was the only one he
wore in the TV show, as well as publicity (check out that sweet, cracking
vinyl).
For you, Rory, he's willing to part with it
for $10,000. That's a bargain but a limited time only.

Get your ass to a bookstore: PRONTO!
"Bored of the Rings" is probably the funniest book I've ever read.
Well, maybe not THE funniest... but it ranks up there in the top 25 or
so. BOTR was recently re-issued, probably to cash in on the LOTR movie
interest. Read it! You'll laugh your nuggets off.

$10,000 dollars? Is that all? I better get out my check book.
I just watched the original again (In fact, last night the last movie of 2001 I watched was, what else?, 2001. Then this morning the first movie of 2002 I watch is the original POTA. Hopefully this'll be good luck for the new year.). Anyway, The whatever you call it on McDowall's tunic is a nice brown leather. You can see how much cheaper the vinyl looks starting in ESCAPE. Fox made the leather ones, I would think -- I also noticed how much better the original gorilla leather jackets are from what you start seeing in the mass-produced vinyl knockoffs in BENEATH.
Anyway, enough about this. None of us have $10,000 to spend on a stinky old ape suit.

The Roddy #1 has a Fox label, dear. It

haven't got the remastered DVD yet. Is it really that good? Watched a little
"Episode 1" in the New year, 25th anniversary of Lucas' cash cow, you know.

For you, Rory, he's willing to part with it for
$10,000. That's a bargain but a limited time only.

$10,000 dollars?
Is that all? I better get out my check book.
I just
watched the original again (In fact, last night the last movie of 2001 I
watched was, what else?, 2001. Then this morning the first movie of 2002
I watch is the original POTA. Hopefully this'll be good luck for the new
year.). Anyway, The whatever you call it on McDowall's tunic is a nice
brown leather. You can see how much cheaper the vinyl looks starting in
ESCAPE. Fox made the leather ones, I would think -- I also noticed
how much better the original gorilla leather jackets are from what you start
seeing in the mass-produced vinyl knockoffs in BENEATH.
Anyway, enough
about this. None of us have $10,000 to spend on a stinky old ape suit.

Do you like Shakespeare Joe? The writer I mean....
LOTR is far from boring. It is one of THE best yarns ever spun in the age
old tradition of storytelling. I have read the Hobbit (and I don't think
many new generations would be thrilled by its pace) and the trilogy. There
is much to be learned from how to adapt a fine story to the silver screen!!!
Trust me Joe, or go and find out yourself. I am almost positive you will

It's not that much better than the old one, unless you have surround sound (the mix has been improved) and a 16X9 display, then the new one is a must. The picture has slightly better color on the new version if you're watching it on a regular TV.
Now that 2001 has a 16X9 enhanced transfer for DVD, the original POTA has some catching up to do.

.htmlEarlier I mentioned the "Lord of the Rings" references in Terry Hayes'
POTA script for Oliver Stone. Tonight I was listening to my favorite radio
host, L.A.'s Jim Ladd, and he played a set of Led Zepplin songs that relate
to "Lord of the Rings". In the POTA script the main character (to have been
played by Ah-nuld) was named Robert Plant (like the Led Zep singer). I
thought those choices were random, I didn't know the Zep was into LOTR. I
guess Hayes is a true Led Zep fan to know that stuff. The Ah-nuld character
is also called Will Robinson (as in "Lost in Space") but I haven't figured
out the connection there.
Who cares? I dunno, I just thought I'd throw that out there with all the
LOTR talk. By the way, the Zep songs are: "The Immigrant Song", "Misty
Mountain Hop", "Ramble On", and "The Battle of Evermore". Thanks for your
attention. Peace.

The amazing thing about Kim # 1 is the color. Kim # 2 and even Roddy #1 hasn't got the richness of color it has. It even dificult to discribe it. It sort of a cross between Avacado, Olive, Artichoke and Jade. You might find something close on a Pantone PMS color chart. But it changes with the light, and you can see browns and even orange in it.<.html

.html Hey Rory (and everyone else),
I'm still here! I have a few topic starters that I want to throw out there, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I guess that's my New Year's resolution.
Anyways, I do agree with you Rory, BENEATH is a mess. I've always felt that way. If it wasn't for BATTLE being so lame, BENEATH would be the turkey of the lot. I think BENEATH is more of a mess than POTA 2001.
Despite that, BENEATH is probably the most entertaining mess of a movie ever made. There's a lot going on there. I do enjoy it, even though it makes me cringe at times (the Prayer to the Bomb scene is corny beyond belief). And it is the first movie to ever scare the crap out of me. I was pretty young when I first saw the mutant reveal scene on TV. It freaked me out.
Again Rory, I agree with you about the script. It is the main thing wrong with the movie. Franciscus is OK, but no Heston. Really I blame a lot of what's wrong with BENEATH on Heston. If he would have agreed to star in the sequel rather than do a glorified cameo, they probably could have come up with something much better.

Don't feel lonely, Rory. We're
here.
I'd say yes, "Beneath" is a mess and is
probably the "Apes" movie that reminds me the most of Burton's flick (though as
I said Burton's opus is more like the TV show). The "Beneath" script is
half-baked but has some cool visuals but is also mostly a retread of the
original. And hey, doesn't that describe Burton's effort to a tee? The whole
isn't greater than the sum of it's parts.
As for Cougar, I don't see the point. It's
not like this is a subscription service. This group doesn't get more interesting
if you don't belong to it. It's like with Alex, some people just enjoy quitting
things I guess. Why don't they just stick around and enjoy the good with the
boring?

.html"M'Totsky" (whoever) is absolutely right when he blames Heston for
BENEATH's flaws. Heston COULD have said, "Listen, Dick [Zanuck], you
ponied up the dough for PLANET, and it's a smash, and I know you guys
feel you HAVE to make a sequel. I don't think any sequel can do
justice to the original. However... IF you can come up with a boffo
script that tells a great story and somehow DOES do justice to APES
#1... THEN I'll gladly do it..."
Or something along those lines.
Having said that, let me say here that GIVEN THE LIMITATIONS that Mort
Abrahams (et al.) had to work with, having to 'work around' Heston's
willingness to appear ONLY in a glorified cameo, they ended up making
a movie that--despite its flaws--is still a terrific film. Even
Maurice Evans (and at least one of its original reviewers) thought
that BENEATH was in some ways SUPERIOR to the original movie.
Do I think BENEATH is better than PLANET? Well, no, for obvious
reasons. BUT it IS a movie that packs quite a punch. I was about seven
years old when it first aired on TV, and as much as PLANET riveted me
to the screen, BENEATH gripped me even more. The mutant "Mass of the
Bomb" sequence made going to (or, being forced to go to) church quite
a surreal experience for me as a kid--I half expected the entire
congregation to peel off latex masks and expose their 'Gray's Anatomy'
mutant features!
In PLANET, we had a big hunt scene. In BENEATH we have the gorilla
army mowing down obviously non-animal, robe-garbed humans in the
'streets' of their underground city. When Brent gets blasted with
machinegun fire, it amazes me that the flick was rated G. Nowadays,
it'd be lucky to get a PG rating for that kind of explicit violence.
The 'crucified gorillas' scene, too, was quite a stunner. Lately, I'm
reminded of the footage of a US soldier's corpse being dragged through
the streets of Mogadishu for a similar use of visual propaganda,
intended to horrify the 'enemy'.
Eric Greene's book, PLANET OF THE APES AS AMERICAN MYTH, goes into a
lot of great detail explaining many of the relevant contemporary
themes that BENEATH addressed for its 1969/1970 audience. The
"doomsday bomb" destruction of the world--regardless of the reason it
was given this ending--still gets people talking; in Eric Greene's
book, he calls it a "racial apocalypse"--the perhaps inevitable
outcome of escalating trends in racial hatred/war/genocide.
Is BENEATH truly a "mess" as some seem to think? Structurally, it has
problems--all due to the fact that the screenwriter had to work around
the Heston-minimal-participation thing. At the crux of it, though,
they basically had to get a new protagonist (Brent) into an awareness
of the Ape culture (which has undergone a shift since the ending of
PLANET, with Ursus having taken power and gotten the 'war machine'
ready for an invasion) and then have him exposed to the Mutant culture
prior to the clash of those two forces. The Mutant culture is the
center of BENEATH, which--like PLANET--is, at heart, a satire. As L.
Ron Hubbard said in his intro to the 1st volume of his "MISSION EARTH"
dekalogy ("The Invaders Plan"), satire--in the Chinese language--is
more literally translated from the chinese language as "laughter with
knives". The "Mass of the Bomb" IS laughable... but the laughter is a
nervous sort of laughter. Imagine how the Pope (and other Catholics)
reacted to seeing St. Patrick's Cathedral being used two millennia in
the future as the site where "the instrument of [the Mutants'] God" is
worshipped. The ceremony presided over by Mendez XXVI is a vicious
parody of a Catholic Mass, intended to show--in a way--that the
'official Church' [or 'churches'] of OUR society had somehow been
complicit in the Cold War society's mentality which justified the
construction of thousands of nuclear bombs (in an "arms race") which--
if used--could ONLY result in the total annihilation of our own
civilization. Mendez XXVI's society WORSHIPS the bomb; our own society
seemed to have a similar (if less blatant) opinion: Mendez refers to
the Alpha Omega bomb as "a holy weapon of peace", whereas we have
given the name "peacekeeper" to a class of missiles.
Sorta like "destroying the village in order to save it"!
Yeah, BENEATH could have been better; there isn't as much of Zira &
Cornelius in it as there could have been--though they DO contribute
just what the film's plot requires them to. Brent could have been
given more depth than he had (in contrast to Taylor, whose personality
is integral to the plot of PLANET). But, again, had Heston been
willing to devote himself to STARRING in a sequel (pending script
approval), rather than just appearing briefly, the Brent-shortcomings
would not be an issue.
All 5 films have flaws (I have yet to see ANY movie that is absolutely
perfect--and the sci-fi genre is more prone to flaws than other types
do to the 'science' part of the equation--if the Science is a mess,
than the 'suspension of disbelief' just isn't there); I think we tend
to notice BENEATH's flaws more because Heston (who STARRED in the 1st
flick) is IN this sequel... but only for a little bit at the beginning
and a little bit more at the ending. This flaw is so OBVIOUS that we
tend to notice it more, I think.
I hate to be one of those guys who rate the 5 films in order of "best
to worst" since I love 'em all, despite their flaws. Let me just say
that although they ALL had an effect on me, BENEATH had the most
profound and shocking effect on me when I first saw it... and for
YEARS afterward. Not that this makes it the "best" of the APES films
(I won't play that game), but it does make it (for me) the most
intense.
> I'd say yes, "Beneath" is a mess and is probably the "Apes" movie that reminds me the most of Burton's flick (though as I said Burton's opus is more like the TV show). The "Beneath" script is half-baked but has some cool visuals but is also mostly a retread of the original. And hey, doesn't that describe Burton's effort to a tee? The whole isn't greater than the sum of it's parts.

> In a related matter. . . . Last night I watched 1971's "The Andromeda Strain." I noticed for the first time that ninety minutes into the movie a helicopter flies over Red Rock Canyon, over the very spot where the gorilla army marches in the desert in BENEATH. You get a good view of what the area looks like, and the helicopter then lands and you see more of the canyon.

.html Yeah, It's kind of funny to look back now at Heston's egotistical theory that killing him off ( and the world) would end the Planet of the Apes. The audience wanted more...and more. Remember what they say about wishing too hard for what you want....

.html I agree...Beneath wasn't that bad. It certainly no Battle. In a way it's
like Conquest. They both suffer from some crap looking apes. They're both
built around a race war. Boy! Burton's Apes doe fit nicely in here doesn't
it. But I thought the Bomb worship song was down right creepy. And not
unlike today's Doomsday cults. What was laughable was the Wurlitzer organ
sound effect whenever they used their mind control. That's King Ghidora's
voice! I was nine when it came out and being in the midst of the cold war,
and movies where the world blew up had a profound effect on me, even comedies
like Dr. Strangelove, when Slim Pickens rode that H-bomb.
Of course Linda Harrison liked it . . . She finally got a line. And Evans
had more lines than ever. To this day Kim didn't care much for it, but she
had fewer scenes than Heston, so she did it anyway. The upside-down
crucified gorillas were effective, but could have been more so if they'd done
some full body burns, instead of that cheap fire effect. Trying to keep that
G rating has been an albatross around the neck of ape films from the
beginning. It turned them into the Matinee Serial Stuff that they were
trying not to be when they were first shopping the idea to the studios. Sure
they need the big audiences to offset the budgets on SF films. But I believe
that the Alien pictures had respectable numbers at the box-office. I'd like
to do an Apes film with as much sex and violence as possible. Not only might
the critics take it seriously but the Ewoks factor will be nil. Thank God
Burton didn't use the spider monkeys! <.html

Yeah, Joe Russo, too, has this great love of BENEATH that lets him forgive all of its flaws. But for me, I was 8 when I first saw PLANET and that was the most intense movie for me. By the time BENEATH came out I was almost 11, and so right from the very first I could see that BENEATH wasn't as good as PLANET. Also, I very much like that PLANET is mostly a 'misanthrope's misadventure' with Heston being this very strong presence. He really did cripple BENEATH before one frame was shot.

.html "patrickmichaeltilton" wrote a thoughtful and intelligent commentary
about BENEATH. BENEATH was the first of the Apes movies that I ever
saw. I was relatively young, and it was a bit too bold for my
liking. I thought it was ugly and didn't get the point. If I had
seen the first Apes movie, I may have felt differently. I did see
RETURN when it came out, and LOVED the story. I didn't become an
Apes appreciator until years later, really.
I'm not a sci-fi scholar by any means. This year we've chosen to
take a look at cult science fiction in our art and literature
programs. We began with the Asimov Robot Books and are concentrating
now on Apes. This will be the main focus of our program. The great
news is that the Apes movies are so DEEP, superficially. The
characters are LIKEABLE. The violence is COMIC-LIKE, so although
heavy it is quite watchable. There is an obvious SOCIAL STATEMENT.
They include fine elements of SCIENCE FICTION. We are HUGE Apes
fans.
BENEATH is wonderful material to work with. While the other Apes
movies are Platonian in a way and make for excellent social
discussion, BENEATH is the best (or at least the easiest and most
obvious) example of the social/cultural condition of mankind at the
time of their popularity. Not as watchable, really, but excellent
discussion (as you will note by the length of time and amount of
space recently devoted to this topic in recent weeks.) <.html

.htmlActually there's some interesting developments on DVD re: ratings. For
big movies like "Pearl Harbor" and "Lord of the Rings" (and "Apes") the
studios insist on a PG-13 rating. Some blame that on the watered down feel
of Burton's film. But both "Pearl Harbor" and "Rings" are coming out with
darker, more violent versions on DVD, more like the directors' intention.
DVD frees up the film maker to say, "Let's film it, we can put it on the
DVD". Studios can relate to that, another demographic to buy a DVD. If there
were DVDs at the time of "Conquest" maybe we would have both the theatrical
and director's version.

we're little. The first one I saw was "Escape" so I'm very forgiving of it's

If I'd seen one of the sequels first when I was around 7 to 10 years old, I'd probably like that one best too. I do agree that ESCAPE is the best of the sequels, but only because it has the most clever and literate script. This is what I value more than cool action or characters who are like supermen. I see all the flaws in PLANET, but that was THE movie that did it for me when I was eight, so that's that. The sequels bug me now because their inadequacies bugged me back when they were new! They've been bugging me for thirty years. That's a whole lotta buggin' goin' on!

So, you were a kind of a little Nazi as a kid, but now you've mellowed? Just kidding. I still think Ursus is sort of cool, but in the very same way those Nazis in their uniforms looked cool. Hey, here's another topic: General Ursus, cool or a bone-headed fascist? Imagine sending him after the Taliban -- "Your god didn't save 'ya, did he?"

Just a quick clarifier - when you say you saw "Return", do you mean "Escape"
which is the movie where 3 apes come to earth in the 70's or do you mean the

Hi Kim. Too bad you weren't in the group earlier. There used to be a woman here named JoAndra. She was a big Roddy McDowall fan too, but she left the group because we used a word she didn't like. Anyway, I still talk to her every so often, so if you want to meet another female Roddy fan on the web let me know.
Another DVD you might want to pick up or look for as a rental at Blockbuster, Kim, is the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" Special Edition disc. There's two hours of Roddy just answering questions about APES.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there - Battle was the first one
that I saw and consequently I'm one of the few people who never criticise
it! Conversely I think Escape is the weakest of the sequels - but while I
can usually offer reasons why I think this, I suspect it could be more to do
with the fact that I didn't see it until quite a while after the others, and
probably years after I saw Battle.
For what it's worth, I absolutely love Beneath.

Actually I got it for my birthday, which was at the end of November. But like
you Rory, I have been watching the TV series over a period of time, instead
of all at once. I am up to "The Horse Race" right now.
My son likes APES, but for no other reason than I do. He likes everything I
do: Beatles, Star Wars, KISS, etc. He is like my own "Mini Me." He just knows
about APES because of the toys and stuff that I have around and the POTA 2001
commercials that were airing over the summer. I still think he's too young
for it (he's only 3 1/2), but I will introduce him to it when the time is
right. Perhaps the TV series would be the right thing to start with.
