Who am I to complain about TNG, DS9, VOY, & now "Enterprise"?

I've watched every episode of ENTERPRISE so far.  I'm enjoying it.

As you well know, Patrick, the Icarus spacecraft is a highly unlikely one to go at nearly the speed of light -- windows that look out toward the front? -- and more likely a landing craft.  It would have to have somekind of warpfield around it to be traveling through space as seen in the opening of PLANET.  I'm assuming a warpfield protects the craft from the debris it's going to be passing through, and counteracts the increase in mass and length that would destroy the human body?

How would you design a 'fast-as-light' spacecraft, Patrick?  I once saw a concept painting of a craft that had a funnel in front and back.  This spaceship would scoop up the matter it passed through and use it as fuel for thrust, of somekind, that would be expelled out the opposite funnel.  Whenever I dream of the film of Boulle's book that I'd like to see, I imagine a craft of this kind for Professor Antelle's spaceship.  Maybe it wouldn't be appropriate but from the painting I saw it certainly would make a spectacular visual impression as the matter hitting the front funnel puts out a huge lightshow.

My local collectibles store has the Kubricks for around $12 now. I guess
they heard the low price ones are coming. I picked up the wagon cage one and
the Ursus with horse one (basically the 2 gorilla sets). And I already had
the ape-o-nauts and ship. Some think they're stupid but I love them. And I'm
not alone. I see there's a lot of American imitators, icluding one company
that's doing "The Simpsons". I'd like to see a version of the POTA musical.

the ape-o-nauts and ship. Some think they're stupid but I love them. And I'm
not alone. I see there's a lot of American imitators, icluding one company
that's doing "The Simpsons". I'd like to see a version of the POTA musical.
Now that's entertainment!                               - - - Jeff

I have a set of the Kubricks, the one with Zaius, Zira and Cornelius, and the Lawgiver.  I thought they looked stupid when all I saw was pictures, but seeing it for real they are kind of cool.  I don't know how many I'll collect though.

Thanks, Brian. That gorilla suit is exceptional. It's
exactly what we needed. Would it be reasonable to believe that the
female orangutan was also similarly dressed, then? Also, we are
assuming that she (the gorilla) would be wearing an additional longer
skirt (such as the brown one that Zira wears) under the outfit in the
picture.
We would love to know if the man who owns this outfit would
be willing to show it. We would love to go see it.

No, "Cats and Dogs" didn't make near what "Apes" did (but it probably didn't cost as much either). But every studio is desperate for a franchise, they know what the last one did and they can budget accordingly. Let's see, from last year, that's "Apes", "Cats and Dogs", "Tomb Raider", "Fast & Furious", "Shrek", "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings", "Jeepers Creepers", "Spy Kids", "Hannibal", "Mummy", and probably "Jurassic Park" that are going to have sequels. Did I leave anyone out?                - - - Jeff

Some of you may remember, like me, the summer of 1971.  ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES was a hit in the early summer, but the rest was ruled by WILLARD, though I've never thought much of the movie.  The summer of '72 saw CONQUEST and a really crappy sequel to WILLARD called BEN.  You might remember the Michael Jackson song from that one.

Well, I'll have to think about that franchise question, but last night when I told Joe Russo about this WILLARD remake thing, his response to it is "Great, now maybe we'll get the original on DVD."  He a fan of it, too.  Me, I still consider WILLARD just so-so.  The book was much better.  I hope the screenplay goes back to the book.

You're probably thinking of Semos, the religious figure of Burton's apes. None of the figures are given names except Haristas in the Boulle book, the Lawgiver in the originals and Semos in the Burton thing. They don't go into religion very much. It's basically a play on Judeo-Christian beliefs using apes instead of people. Oh, and in the TV show they believed in "gods", not God. And though they had the small Lawgiver statue around, they never mentioned him.

Kassidy,

I hope you have a copy of Boulle's book.  If so, go read chapter 22.  What it says in there is about as deep as, I guess, Boulle wanted to go into the apes' social and religious attitudes and beliefs.  The movies and TV show didn't go very far into the apes religion at all, except that man was evil, shun him, and all that huggermugger.

.htmlLest we all forget, February 8th is the 34th anniversary of the world premiere of a movie called PLANET OF THE APES.  Maybe you remember it?  I was going to scan an ad I copied at the library from the New York Times of PLANET's opening day, but it didn't come out well and you probably wouldn't be able to read the fine print.

Anyway, the play times for PLANET on Feb. 8th at Loew's Capital theatre on Broadway and 51st St. were 10:00, 12:10, 2:25, 4:35, 6:50, 8:50 and 10:50.  (It also played at the 72nd Street Playhouse.)  This Friday I'm going to try and watch PLANET at one of those times.  Anyone else?

And I've attached this before, but here again is what PLANET made in it's first five days.

There was also an episode of the old 60's Spiderman series where he

I don't blame Naughton, if that's his attitude.  The TV show was only five or six months of his life, it wasn't Shakespeare, and he's done a lot more he no doubt finds much more interesting to talk about.  Maybe if, like the rest of you, he'd been a kid in the seventies and had watched himself and collected his own Mego figure he'd be more into it.  I saw him recently on an episode of A&E's 100 CENTER STREET and he was excellent.  He's a much better actor now than he was in '74.

Good to know I'm not the only person that scanned through the microfilm of the New York Times looking for old POTA movie ads. I blew off a whole day at college once printing up stuff from all five films, The Andromeda Strain, and a few others. And Rory is right- the quality of the copies you get from microfilm absolutely sucks!! But at least you get to see the ads, which is kind of cool in it's own way.

The Gerry Anderson series 'UFO'. Still a very underrated series in my opinion. And although some may consider it heresy, it think it was better than Space:1999 (and I loved that show as well). I recently found out that a second season of UFO had been ordered, but the Anderson's started reworking the concepts and the UFO eventually morphed into 1999.

Well if it was me, I would take a crack at some of the comics properties. The
Fantastic Four would be at the top of my list, maybe the Avengers or the
Justice League. I always thought the Watchmen would have made a great film
(it is even drawn like a movie in my opinion). I always preferred Marvel over
DC. I hope they don't mess up the upcoming Spiderman, Daredevil and the Hulk
films. I have no idea why the Batman films had to be such a mess. The
creators of the Batman: The Animated Series proved that comics stories can
make powerful tales on the small screen.

I always wondered why they didn't do more Wizard of Oz films. Is it because
the original film is such a classic? I know there was a Return to Oz film of
some sort in the 1980s, but I have never seen it. I used to read the original
set of novels by L. Frank Baum as a kid and thought they would have made
great movies. There were a bunch of crazy characters in those. There's a
franchise waiting to happen in my opinion.

And finally, if I was a director with any sort of influence, I would revive
the POTA TV show and finally wrap the thing up. I would get Harper and
Naugton to reprise their roles. Perhaps hire Lou Wagner to play Galen or
create a new role just for him. The Apemania guys could do the makeup and
Rory Monteith could write the script. It would be grand!

Actually, I've never heard of that one. You want to fill me in or should
I hit up the old IMBD?

I don't even think the IMDB could do it justice.  It's sort of a cheap B&W version of Journey To The Center Of The Earth.  The sort of movie they used to show on TV in the afternoon on the weekend.  But it's right up there with The Deadly Mantis.

hope they can find a place for the theme song in the new movie (with music by
        Danny Elfman).

I didn't like the sound of his voice.  Spiderman's voice was deeper than that.
It's like Batman sounding like Robin.

Good answers, Matt. "Watchmen" was attempted by Terry Gilliam and he
finally deemed it "unfilmable". I hear they are going to attempt it again
(without Gilliam). "Fantastic 4" has been in the works for years, at one

Sounds like they're having trouble getting the budget down. It would be
tough to get the rights straightened out for an "Avengers" or "Justice
League" thing, like the problems they're having clearing an "Alien vs.
Predator" flick. I read they are jumping through hoops just to get "Batman"

Oh, and I believe Fox have the rights for Fantastic 4 and in fact a completed
version made in the early 90's starring Jay Underwood is sitting on the shelf
never to see the light of day because of the more recent Fox deal. It's
        clobberin' time!

I think it's supposed to be Brent falling off the horse that was shot out from under him and Nova.  I'll have to ask Joe Russo when he gets it.  The poster didn't sell at auction, but Russo contacted the guy in Japan who agreed to sell it -- for $250.

If you went to the movies a lot as a kid, it's VERY COOL to go find your local paper on microfilm and look up when movies played and the ads they had for them.  It's the next best thing to having a time machine.

We agree. We're in for the OZ sequels. This was such a cool
breakthrough movie, timeless, and even now the original classic is
sensational. ((Even Burton based his chimp warriors on the gargoyles
in OZ.)) Return to OZ was okay. But a lover of the OZ books will
agree, there is SO MUCH MORE. Baum's imagination was boundless and
the books -- many more than just The Wonderful Wizard of OZ (which I
believe was actually the second?) -- were all fodder for cool
        movies.

We, obviously, aren't big moviegoers. But, our vote is for more OZ
        movies.

Not sitting on the shelf. The early '90's "Fantastic 4" is a popular
bootleg item at conventions. As with "The Star Wars Holiday Special" and
"The Beatles" cartoons, suppression is not making this stuff go away. It's
just that the people who could be profiting from official release

It was a live action TV show that came out between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. It takes place on Chewbacca's home planet and features his family (I think his son's name was Lumpy). Luke, C3P0 and R2D2 show up as well I think (as do TV actors Bea Arthur and Harvey Korman). It is extremely cheesy. I had fond memories of it as a kid, but I saw it again about 5 years ago on a bootleg and it was almost painful to watch. I think Lucas just wishes it would be forgotten, although there is a section about it in the book "Star Wars Chronicles." It is notable because it features the first appearance of Boba Fett in an animated piece. I think you can see part of that right now at starwars.com in a recent featurette about the evolution of the Fett character.

Chewbacca is a Wookie.  He lives on the planet Endor with a bunch of little Ewoks.  That Does Not Make Sense!  If that does not make sense, then you must acquit.

A cool thing called the internet. Umm, eBay would be my call. Wasn't Alex

What happened to Alex?  He was going to tape the chat show interviews for me. I want Helena on Dave!

I do believe he said that he'd like to see every copy destroyed.

That just makes me more interested in seeing it!

I've never seen the F4 film, but as for the Justice League... have you ever
seen the rejected pilot episode for the live action JLA series? Comics fans
are still receiving counselling as a result of that one.

I keep meaning to go to my local library and check out the old papers - I
think, based on a few other details I remember, that I'd actually be able to
work out the exact date and time of the TV screening of Battle that first
hooked me! That'd be nice to know (for me only perhaps).

i hope i dont sound to ignorant or anything, but in case you need proof of
that john huston played the lawgiver in battle for the planet of the apes.
in the movie, one of his human students or whatever refers to him as the
lawgiver. forgive me if this is common knowledge or something
