I didn't think of that.  I guess 2,000 years would be enough time for the garbage dump to turn into sand :)

Why Florida?  I was thinking more in terms of we all work out when we can all watch POTA at the same time, then we all start watching it and get on line to check with each other to make sure....  What am I thinking?  This is silly.

I thought all the REAL ape fans lived in Florida...

      Like Alex - remember him?

      Alex...where are you?

Are you really Rory, created as a pseudonym? Hmmm....... Rory is
      very good at posting pitures.

How did you get Taylor to flip the bird?

Problem is, I am reading at work from a server, so links don't link
etc. All I got in that email was about 7 attached photos, so I
assumed you were referring to them. I will check the site/story when
I get home. It sounds kinda funny.

I get NO time to myself at home, so it could be a while......

I do work at work, but I manage my time a little better (and an email
to the group only takes a few seconds).

That's a good theory about when I get home, but there are far worse
consequences if I don't pull my weight there.

I would have thought it was supposed to be part of the frame.

I think the ship was coming down nose first on an angle around 45
degrees then lost control and the "stomach" of the ship dragged,
          leaving the pilot area intact.

Hmm....maybe this is a bad angle, but isn't there wreckage where the
          suspended animation bays should be?

No, I mean worse consequences as in the kids get to bed without a
bath at 2am and the babies starve to death. There is a lot of hard
work in raising babies, and twins are even more demaning.

We should all write to AMC and ask them to re-run the marathon weekend again.

Judging by the lifting body shape, and the small control surfaces, I'd guess that it's supposed to land like a space shuttle.

OK, nows here's a picture of Brent's ship after it has crashed.  How do you think this ship was landing?  Vertically or Horizontally.  I think it might have been vertically and it landed hard and fell over.  We really don't know how the "Icarus" was supposed to land.

                Script Review: I AM LEGEND
                Written by Mark Protosevich

                MINOR SPOILERS!

NOTE: The screenplays we review are often in development and may experience many rewrites, some could end up being completely different than what is reviewed here. It is our hope that our reviews generate more interest in the film. Thank you.

Mark Protosevich's I Am Legend script is based on the novel by Richard Matheson, and is quite simply one of the better screenplays I've read in a long time. It's easily one of the best sci-fi screenplays I've ever read.

Despite the script being very good, it most likely has little chance of ever being seen at a theater near you any time soon. In 1996 Warner Bros. optioned Protosevich's spec screenplay The Cell, and were so impressed with the writing they offered him the opportunity to do the adaptation of Matheson's novel, which they owned the rights to.

Since 1996 numerous Hollywood icons have considered starring, directing, or producing the project. Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to star and Ridley Scott wanted to direct. Somehow Arnold thought he would be better served doing End of Days and The 6th Day (oh well) and Ridely Scott decided to do Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, which were obviously good moves. Others who were once rumored to be considering the project include Kurt Russel and director Rob Bowman. Last year Will Smith said he was interested, Schwarzenegger now wants to produce, and Michael Bay wants to direct. So what does all this mean? I don't have the foggiest idea. But what I do know is that at least one version of the script is very good.

During the last six years the script has experienced numerous rewrites, apparently most of them by John Logan who Ridely Scott hired (later he would bring Logan in for work on the Gladiator script.) But the script that everyone keeps turning back to is Protosevich's first draft. According to reports, Ridley Scott and John Logan had a very different view of the material than Protosevich.

Warner Bros. almost gave up on the project at least twice since 1997 due do financial problems, budget projections, and script concerns. Other writers rumored to be involved in rewrites include Neil Jimenez and Tracy Torme.

With the prospect that maybe the stars might align for I Am Legend, and the fact that the script just blew me away, I was compelled to write this short article about Protosevich's excellent script.

Richard Matheson's novel took an interesting point of view in regard to vampires, making it one of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century. Written in 1954 one could say it was almost revolutionary as a horror story. In Matheson's book a lone human being is left on earth (Robert Neville). He is being hunted by pale-skinned, white-fanged creatures with an insatiable thirst for blood. Much like typical vampire legends, they were susceptible to garlic, water, sunlight, crucifixes, and of course a wooden stake through the heart. Neville was very much the tortured hero having lost his wife and daughter to a blood disease that afflicted the entire planet. Neville spends his days gathering supplies and armaments, and his nights confined to his fortified home while the creatures harass him non-stop until sunrise.

Matheson's novel inspired many films (The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man for example) and he himself even wrote an adaptation of the book. The idea of some kind of blood condition that turns people into these creatures is a plot element that many of the stories share, including Protosevich's script. However, none of these previous efforts equal Protosevich's haunting, mesmerizing, and poignant screenplay about a man who believes he is the last surviving human being on earth, and every night has to fend off demons (both physically and psychologically) and avoid literally going insane or being killed.

The story opens with what I can only guess would be some superimposed text telling of the advancements in Genetic Research that have allowed scientists to use viruses linked to healthy cells to destroy and replace diseased cells in patients afflicted with cancer.

Then a video image, Robert Neville talking, documenting the date "October 17th… 2002." He goes on to tell us when and where he was born, about his wife and his previous life.

The script is set in San Francisco, which is refreshing since everyone seems to want to set it Los Angeles—as if we haven't seen that city destroyed enough times. As Neville does his morning routine we notice he is a physical specimen covered with noticeable "SCARS." Some of them look like bites. He has seen his share of fighting. We later learn he is AB Negative and immune to the virus.

Neville's only companion is his dog. Together they leave the fortress in a highly modified Range Rover and enter the ruins of San Francisco. Protosevich gives us a haunting and eerie description of a defunct civilization.

Neville enters the city and stops at a radio station for his daily broadcast: "Big Bob Neville here this morning, as I am every morning. Traffic? There is none. Weather? Who cares. News? I'm still alive. What about you?"

He leaves the station and continues his rounds. He tells anyone who is still alive to meet him in the park at high noon, but no one is ever there. He is for all practical purposes, the last man on earth. Surrounded by death, waiting for death, and in a way looking forward to it.

Neville is heavily armed with automatic hand guns and an M-16 machine gun. He stops somewhere downtown to check traps he sets for the monsters—which we come to know as "Hemocytes." In one trap has a dangling human body ensnared, or so it seems. Upon inspection Neville realizes he has fallen into a trap when a sniper in a nearby building opens fire on him. Somehow he avoids being shot and scurries into the building. Unaware that Neville is close by the sniper is cornered in the room. Neville subdues the sniper who is strangely bound up in heavy clothes and has his face almost completely covered. After pinning the sniper to the ground Neville removes a scarf revealing a ghastly sight:

"A demonic visage. Ghostly white flesh so devoid of pigment we can see the blue and purple veins beneath the surface. His eyes are an unearthly cold blue/grey and white. He is completely hairless--nothing on his pate, no brows, no facial hair. His lips a deep ruby red. This thing was once human, but now…"

These creatures are not your typical vampires -- they are not zombies either -- but something horrific and fierce. They posses superhuman strength, are intelligent and fairly sophisticated. Don't think Night of the Living Dead, think more aesthetic. These creatures can regenerate when not mortally wounded. One description after a female Hemocyte drinks the blood of a fallen comrade is chilling: "Dark blood covers her chin and chest, but as she walks, the liquid crawls across her skin into her mouth. It seems to give mass and power to her body and rich color to her translucent skin."

When these creatures come at night they surround Neville's compound (his modified house that stands on a hill) and begin chanting and beating drums. The screenwriter describes it as, "AN EERIE MOAN. Low, resonant. A CHANT. Far in the distance. Beyond the walls, beyond the fence. The MOANING INTESIFIES." Then slowly and methodically they try to get into the house.

Neville is effected by their persistent cries. He plays loud music. He keeps tabs on his visitors by watching monitors while his dog patrols an inside perimeter protected by a barbwire fence and a moat. Whenever an intruder is detected the dog alerts Neville.

The Hemocytes have a leader, a kind of king, who is called Cortman. Not a very demonic name. But as the story unfolds we learn more about him and who he was.

The screenwriter had to overcome some significant obstacles to make this story work. Much like Tom Hank's character in Cast Away, a lot of this story is a one man show. Neville is almost always alone. Whether in his house or roaming the empty streets of San Francisco, he has no one to talk to except his dog. The exposition has to carry the story, and this is a hard thing to pull off.

Protosevich had to keep the narrative moving with a lot of action. He cleverly establishes character by showing us how Neville lives, and what he deals with on a daily basis. The effect is an enthralling story of one man's plight into near madness while trying to avoid death. All the while you wonder why he just doesn't give up and spare himself all the anguish? But the answer to that question reveals one of the themes of the story.

The screenwriter crafted a strong narrative that is engrossing. Neville is the classic tortured hero who discovers that he isn't alone, and by trying to save others he risks his own life. He discovers a women, Anna, who is also AB Negative (as any survivor would have to be) and he takes her in. But he learns she's not the only one. There are more who are kept by the Hemocytes in their underground lairs as a food source.

How Protosevich slowly injects the backstory via video recordings and other materials that Neville makes or watches is effective and actually helps move the story along. Sometimes flashbacks can grind a story to a halt (or pull you too far out of the main narrative) and he avoids that problem. Because the question is so consuming ("How did this happen?"), the slow introduction of the background served to heighten the suspense. I thought Protosvich's interpretation of the virus and how it infects everyone, and how it mutates and spreads, was convincing and almost disturbing. Some very effective writing.

Without revealing major plot elements and other details (which I won't do) I can't really do the entire script justice. I think I have been able to give you a sense of how inventive and dynamic the story is. It's not just a horror story about vampires—for they aren't really vampires at all.

The script is vibrant and literally comes alive on the pages. The screenwriter sets the mood and tone of the story and neatly constructs a theoretical future that is poignant. This script is further evidence that a script need not be just a blueprint for a movie. It can be visual and lucid. It can become something much more.

                Until next time.

We should all write to AMC and ask them to re-run the marathon weekend again.

There's a guy here who says that AMC already has something like that planned for next year, but I think he's pulling our legs.  His name is James and we haven't heard from him lately.  I think because we all knew he was BSing us.

This sounds like a great story.

I'm sure T would agree on my preference for Director - Terry Gilliam.

The unfolding of the script and many elements of the story reminds me
                  a lot of 12 Monkeys.

Recently Rory asked a question about where you could have gone in the
TV series that had not already been covered.

I actually made a lengthy response that was lost in the electronic
                    domain.

Essentially, I believe the first movie contained cues for a sequel
that were not addressed. One that WAS addressed was the Forbidden
Zone, but I feel there is still much that could be uncovered there.

One that was NOT addressed was the trial of Cornelius and Zira.

                    Anyone have any more?

Any ideas on what could have been in the Forbidden Zone other than
Mutants? Obviously, it was a hot spot for "in your face" evidence of
mankind's prior dominance, so what might you have included in the
Forbidden Zone if Beneath had not yet been scripted?

I still like the idea of a sequel to the original movie. Maybe there
could be a twist at the end where Brent's ship lands.....

Here I am answering my own question....sort of.

The big question for me was "How did apes overtake mankind?".

I much prefer the idea of manking devolving as "lower" primates
                    evolve.

How would you have explained it?

                    With gentics? Nuclear mutation?

Remember, I'm thinking in terms of no sequels yet existing.

                    Michael

Remember a while ago we were talking about I AM LEDEND and the movies based on it.  The idea of doing yet another version seems to still be alive and at Dark Horizons.com this was posted today, a review of the script that started it all.  It would be cool to see this movie made, but these days you know somehow they'd screw it up.

                    Script Review: I AM LEGEND
                    Written by Mark Protosevich

                    Reviewed by Christopher Wehner
                    (9/24/02)

                    --Chris

came to be. Boulle doesn't get very detailed. - - - Jeff

Yeah, the last time I read some of the book I was a little bothered by how little Boulle went into details, but I guess he wasn't trying to start a cult or something.  Boy, I wonder what he'd think of this bunch?

SOCK MONKEY: THE GLASS DOOR KNOB ships from Dark Horse

Acclaimed cartoonist and illustrator Tony Millionaire's most recent book, SOCK MONKEY: THE GLASS DOOR KNOB, hits shelves today from Dark Horse Comics. The book features Millionaire's characters Sock Monkey and Mr. Crow as did a prior book, SOCK MONKEY: A CHILDREN'S BOOK. The characters are also featured in the Dark Horse comic book title SOCK MONKEY. Millionaire is also the author and artist of the syndicated alternative feature strip, DRINKY CROW. Millionaire's work is characterized by detailed, old-fashioned-seeming pen and ink drawings. The plot of this book, which is intended for children, concerns the Sock Monkey's interest in and concern over a glass door knob as the seasons of the year change, shifting the lighting conditions within the house. The book is hardcover, 40 pages long, and priced at $14.95.

Well, I think I've done my bit in attempting to get you guys back on
                      to POTA chatting.

Rory, James is probably getting shitty about the absence of any
substantial chatting on topic going on here. I know you have been
trying to get us yapping on topic, but face it, when you have to
resort to the Sock Monkey for news, things are getting bad.

I have said it before and I'll say it again...in times like these a
bit of structure is called for. Even if we drag up old topics, we
are ON topic and that is important.

I think the mothership got hold of the 2 new guys!

OK - I'll type this again because it got lost in cyberspace.

The topic is the first movie.

Could it be tidied up by a Special Edition (a la Lucas' Star Wars)
                      treatment.

eg fix up the problem with the hatch.

Are there any other obvious ones?

Like the (damned) map for example.

Does anyone debate that it SHOULD show New York? I mean, the Statue
of Liberty is featured at the conclusion, so it sure as hell is
reasonable that the map shows the New York region.

                      What else is there?

James, could you throw in one of your notorious maps please?

Mr Cougar, can you throw in a few comments or are you being probed in
                      the mothership too?

Well, I think I've done my bit in attempting to get you guys back on
                      to POTA chatting.

Rory, James is probably getting shitty about the absence of any
substantial chatting on topic going on here.  I know you have been
trying to get us yapping on topic, but face it, when you have to
resort to the Sock Monkey for news, things are getting bad.

I have said it before and I'll say it again...in times like these a
bit of structure is called for.  Even if we drag up old topics, we
are ON topic and that is important.

I think the mothership got hold of the 2 new guys!

Alright, first off there's not a lot going on in the world of POTAdom these days.  The Medicoms don't seem to be coming out on time, there's no new DVD news, new comics news, sequel news or anything except the original series cast and crew who are now dying off.  I'd like this group to be open to discussing anything as long as it in some way can be related to POTA.  Why limit ourselves and why bother hashing out the same old debates on timelines and maps and such.  The arguments usually end up with everyone just keeping to their own opinions and then I start to go crazy and rag on everybody, which I do anyway just for the fun of it.  Now, POTA is a movie, a DVD, and a TV show, and a cartoon, and comics and books, SOOOOOO I think we can talk about any movie, DVD, TV show, comic, cartoon or whatever.  The connection to POTA doesn't even have to be that big.

Anybody got a problem with this?

James is probably still ignoring us, but here's the map with somebody's idea of where things are.  I think this is crazy, that the Atlantic Ocean is the body of water at the bottom and the map is being held sideways.  It's the map in PLANET, so it doesn't work for BENEATH because they didn't know there was going to be a sequel.  And for the benefit of the new guys I think the "inland sea" that Taylor's spaceship crashlands into is what's left of Chesapeake Bay, and that Ape City is in what was north North Carolina.

OK, let's thrash this out again.

The big DVD of the week is "Grease" (Word!) But don't look for anything special or new about it. It's basically a rehash of the 20th anniversary VHS release a few years back. And the director says on www.dvdfile.com that a spec ed. is planned for 2004. There's a huge promotional push for it, as if it weren't just DVD filler in the meantime. Of course the continuing rerelease of movies has already been a topic here but studio greed is always a fun topic. Another edition of "Apes" coming soon? Why soitainly! Space Chimp Descendants Rescued, to Retire in Florida

A court ruling has allowed the Florida Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care to take over a facility in New Mexico that houses 266 chimpanzees, including 16 Air Force chimps descended from the first of their kind that went into space. Conditions at the primate testing facility, called Coulston Foundation, were said to be less than stellar, according to an article in Discovery online. Animal rights groups had accused the facility of mistreating the primates.

"They had hit the bottom of the barrel," Carole Noon of the Florida center told Discovery. "Their entire existence was just sitting in cages, staring straight away, eating monkey chow. It's very sad."

Noon's center has sought custody of the chimps for five years. Noon hopes the animals can eventually join 20 other Air Force chimps in Florida that have been "rehabilitated" from a lab-rat lifestyle and now live in a cage-free colony.

I don't think the rides on horseback were long enough for the inland sea to be Chesapeake Bay, or for Ape City to be in Carolina.  The trip on horseback from Carolina to New York would takes weeks.

                            Do go on.

I think it is a poor map and the film-makers were not thinking in a
lateral geographical sense at the time - they just wanted something a
bit New Yorkish and forgot to address where certain things would have
to be according to cues from the movie.

The big DVD of the week is "Grease" (Word!) But don't look for anything special or new about it. It's basically a rehash of the 20th anniversary VHS release a few years back. And the director says on www.dvdfile.com
that a spec ed. is planned for 2004. There's a huge promotional push for it, as if it weren't just DVD filler in the meantime. I read that same commentary at DVDfile.com today, too.  All it makes me wonder is why is Fox not releasing more stuff?  Home video now makes more money (thanks to the DVD craze) for the studios than theatrical exhibition, so why am I still waiting for some Fox titles?  I have on laserdisc a great Fox western called THE COMANCHEROS! with John Wayne.  It's got commentary by most of the surviving stars and John Wayne's son, Patrick.  I also have a laserdisc of THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES with a director's commentary and a bunch of extras.  Both these discs have beautiful picture transfers and stereo surround sound.  How hard would it be for Fox to put them out on DVD?  Now, I have recently read that starting in January Fox is going to start putting out little Special Editions of its classic titles like HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY and ALL ABOUT EVE, and that there will be new releases of the special editions every month, so maybe this stuff is on the way.  I still don't have a DVD of Fox's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.  The laserdisc I have of it is great, but I want DVD!

I know that part of the appeal (and rightly so) for all of the POTA films has
been the ape makeup and the actors who have worked with it. But given the
technology today, is it really necessary?

How about a new film (let's say it's a faithful version of Boulle's novel)
with CGI apes that look just like the ones you'd see at the zoo? I'm sure
this is what Boulle intended when he wrote his book. The costumes and the
look of the film would be very close to the drawing and sketches that Arthur
Jacobs used when pitching the original film (as seen in the "Behind"
documentary). In addition, the apes would not speak English, but rather an
original language (with subtitles) created specifically for the film. Also,
the film would be rated R, so nudity and extended violence would be fair
game. Who's with me on this one? I'm particularly interested in hearing the
opinions on the CGI apes, rather than makeup.

Well, we don't know how far Cornelius' cave is up the Atlantic shore, and just because the movie only shows Taylor's final ride up the shore in a few shots doesn't mean we, or at least me, has to accept that it's only a one minute horse ride from Cornelius' cave to where the Statue of Liberty is.   Personally, I wish PLANET was a longer movie and l'd like to see a lot more footage of the astronauts crossing the desert -- which was supposed to take "many days and nights" --, the trek to Cornelius' cave (a three or four day journey with horses, and then Taylor's ride up the shoreline.

I'm all for another POTA film, but for the love of god please don't use CGI anything. It's too expensive and still looks fake. Computers, though great for web surfin, don't have the ability to create anything that looks truly real, YET. Give it 50 years and we'll see.

documentary). In addition, the apes would not speak English, but rather an
original language (with subtitles) created specifically for the film. Also,
the film would be rated R, so nudity and extended violence would be fair

Thank you for that, Mr. Lucas. I still think they have yet to make a CGI
character that's as engaging as, say, Zira or Caesar. The makeup in the new
one worked fine for me, the problem was the script and all the CGI in the
world wouldn't cover that. As for doing it in the apes' original language,
Me lGibson is trying to get a movie made about Jesus called "The Passion",
which would be in the original languages of the time, I think Greek and
Latin. With no subtitles. He feels people know the story well enough and he
can convey what's going on visually. - - - Jeff

If I were doing it I wouldn't have "name" actors playing the apes.  I'd have Rick Baker make some really good looking animatronic apes -- that looked like real apes, but that stood erect and had larger craniums -- to be the main ape characters.  They could have human performers in them, but would be like Baker's work for GREYSTOKE.  The voices would be performed by name actors, though.  The background apes, or apes in the distance, as during the hunt, could be CGI, but you know CGI isn't cheap, so having the background apes being just cheaper "suits" would also work.

Anyway, I don't think Fox will ever make a Boulle version of POTA, at least not in our lifetimes.  It would be too expensive and the studios just aren't that brave anymore.  Every BIG movie these days has to be something that a cool ride could be made from.

I'm not saying tht I have a problem with the makeup (in the originals or in
POTA: 2001), it's just that they don't look like "real" apes (like at the zoo
or on Animal Planet). The only way it you could do that would by CGI. It
would be a true "reimagining." Actors and makeup will always draw comparisons
                                to the original.

I'm with you all the way, but we don't work for Fox.  They way I would work the language thing is that as Merou (or whatever his name is) is first captured he hears the apes speaking in a strange tongue that I would have sounding something like structure simian hoots and grunts and such, but as his captivity stretches on he picks up some words, which we would hear in English.  Eventually we'd start hearing the apes speaking more English, which doesn't mean they're speaking it, but means that Merou is translating it in his mind, until finally the apes are speaking nothing but English when Merou completely understands the language.

I would also have the humans naked animals as they are in the book, but I would use CGI to create shadows on them all the time so you don't have to look at everyone's private parts.  I would also love to see that mating sequence from the book when the males have to dance around the females.

I would make a very adult, meaning intelligent, movie, but would that bore the kids that the studio wants to go see the movie again and again?

Haven't you seen "Babe" Jeff? :)

I am still thinking about this one.

One thing that terrified me about the new movie was the portrayal of
the Orangs looking so realistic. I think it worked OK in POTA 2001
but I still like my apes as per the original make ups (well, prior to
the poor old rushed TV Series versions). In liked the 2001 Gorillas
and Chimp MALES (the females...well, enough said).

But yes I would even be happy with a Cartoon of Monkey Planet a la
Boulle, or even a comic book.

You know, I loved Iron Giant and I would be against a remake with
real actors - it would lose its heart.

And the cartoon could be an enjoyable, lower budget production.

I wonder if Boulle did intend the apes to be "real apes"? Did he
ever comment on the actors' portrayals/makeup?

How many think the area below Taylor's hand is supposed to be Long Island?

Well, I think it's a totally different area.   That's Chesapeake Bay on the right.  Taylor travelled north along the shore to find the Statue of Liberty, and just how far up the Atlantic coast is Cornelius' cave?
I would also place the city in CONQUEST someplace around the Chesapeake Bay/Washington DC area.

How about a new film (let's say it's a faithful version of Boulle's novel)
with CGI apes that look just like the ones you'd see at the zoo?

Well, I don't think you'd want the looking exactly like real apes.  With ape eyes and knuckle walking.  It'd be too Lancelot Link!  It would be laughable.  And The Kiss and the end would be a little creepy.
