Looking at John O's great calendar on Hunter's site:
I remembered that it was time to issue the February 2005 calendar
here:
This month's there is the original Planet of the Apes to celebrate
the 37th Anniversary of its release next month.
This file can be accessed:
There's also a great yearly calendar in the Calendars folder by
Rory Montieth.

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes
Turned 34 on Jan 15th
started the day watching the POTA 2001 movie dvd special features
some of that stuff is real great
and gives a person more understanding of the hard work that went into this
movie
You will give the movie more respect after you watch all of the work they
did
Then I went out for supper and had duck
Then as a musician I want and jammed all night with some friends I
hadn't seen in a year playing Beatles, Neil Young tunes etc.

That sounds cool. I like it with orange sauce. And my fave
Beatle song to play is You've Got To Hide your Love Away,
for it is in truth the only one. I gotta learn more Beatles.
I
don't know any Neil Young, but if I had to pick one to learn
it would be Sugar Mountain or Heart Of Gold. Acoustic.
Electric would be Out Of The Blue & Into The Black.

Mixed feelings there. I appreciate them working so tirelessly to
try
and make that a good film, but you can't polish a turd, no matter
how hard you work on it. I just wish the writers would have worked
harder. Or the Suits would have "worked" harder making the
writers
work harder. Suits working . . . Not sure if that's mutually
exclusive.
But they waited ten years to greenlight it. Why not wait a bit
longer
and get it right? And give them more time to get it right, instead
of
moving it up four or five months? That's just bad business
sense.

I don't really feel the movie has any flaws except the actual script
itself
due to that the story has some weak points and i didnt feel a good
connection with the characters
but i dont think thats necessarily the actors faults, or mr. burtons or
anyone else involved
surely they must have known the story could have been better!?!?!

Yeah, but that's a lot. I would have cut Heston's scene, or edited it
down to a cameo. And he would have died a Damn Them and not said "All to
hell!" I would have cut all the cutesy Limbo quips and any and all
references to the original. Thade would have been less snarly. Maybe
they had to do that because of Tim Roth's nose. And with the all that out of the
way I would have put in more character development. And IF they had to
have somebody like Wahlberg in there I'd have got Matt Damon. At least he
can act like he can act.

I agree with all of these, Lord T. Of course, scrapping most of the
script would have been necessary for it all. I did enjoy Limbo,
however. For comic relief I thought he did okay. In fact, I wonder
if Paul Giamatti's orangutan portrayal might have been the best of
all of the ape roles, apart from Pericles.

I think it was the "comic" relief that ruined it.
Apes movies aren't supposed to be funny.
I didn't even like the 3 monkeys bit in the

POTA movies should have tension and are
decidedly downbeat. <.html

.html The Marvel cover paintings have always had a special place for
me. In the UK the cover for issue one (of the British POTA title)
was taken from the US issue 2 and it was, I thought, one of the
most amazing illustrations I had ever seenÂ… and this was the
cover to a comic! (Incidentally the cover for the US issue 1 was
actually reproduced as a small poster and given away as a free
gift).
Not all the US covers were reprinted in the UK but whenever they
were, it was always something a little special. On some
occasions there were even UK versions clearly based upon the
American originals. What with the more expensive US imports
being only from specialist stores (Of which at that time I had no
knowledge) it would be many years until I saw a complete set of
all 29 issues.
My favourites are the covers for issues 2,6,10,14,18 and 26. My
least favourites would be 9 and 24.

Yeah, I thought that. I traced the picture back to its main site and she is
identified as, Ginger "Sugar" Blymyer.
You know those ape fashions are timeless - it's when you see them posing
with crew members you realise how long ago the film was made.

We've discussed this and unfortunately hard-copy reprints are currently out of
the question. For such an idea to work you would need to print (and be
guaranteed to sell) around 250 copies - and sadly that level interest for back
issues, just isn't there.
Each NEW issue of Scrolls currently has a run of around 250 (the magic
number) of which around 200 sell out almost immediately here in the UK.
Some of the others go out to Kass for distribution in the US but Scrolls doesn't
do too well over there, Kass usually has remainders.
It's a cruel fact of life that fanzines generally run at a financial loss to whoever
produces them and Scrolls is no exception, this is why I'm always willing to do
whatever I can to help out. More relevant to your question however is that it
remains why hard copy reprints are not possible.
HoweverÂ… We did an experiment awhile back on making Scrolls 1 available
as a REVISED PDF which was partially successful. Unfortunately the effort
required was almost as much as putting a new issue together. Much easier
will be to scan the early issues `as is' (where possible) and make them
available in the same manner that Greg has trail blazed with the scripts and
comics on Hunter's site.
This is what I am experimenting with right now, making PDF's but with as little
'interference' as possible. If a page doesn't scan too well then I will be doing
what I can to fix it. If some information or an address is known to be out of date
I'll insert a note to that effect.
Hopefully the results will be made available soon.

My favorite cover is from issue #5. Mainly because it was the first
one I ever saw on the newsstand when I was a kid.
I loved how realisticly the apes were painted and how mysterious the
scenario was.
I was so dissapointed that that scene wasn't in the book at all!

The regular Gorilla looks pretty good except for the tan bandolier.
I'll have to either find a way to darken the color or replace it when
I finally get him.
The exclusive version seems like a rip off. No rifle or club, just
the "man-catcher" and whistle for an extra $5. And what's with the
extra ammo pouch on the bandolier? I wonder if they put that there in
place of the glyphs that appear on one of the hunter's bandoliers
early in the movie?

my hope that we can get these issues available to those who might
have missed them in an accessible format.I have no technical ablity

I pre-ordered the exclusive figure because I thought there'd be a chance it had a different head sculpt. It doesn't. I've got it and I had to remove the ammo packs from its bandolier and turn the thing inside out and glue the proper two back on in their proper place. I also whittled a club for it from a pencil! Now I am wondering how to darken the bandolier. Other than that I like it, but I'd like it more if the head sculptor had studied the gorillas from the original more and had included the "fur collar." I think the face is inspired by a shot of Ursus from BENEATH where he sees the Lawgiver illusion.

The Deception IS right up there but IMHO it suffers a little
because of the actress playing Fawna.
And as much as I like Beverly Garland's, Wanda (an evil Zira!) it
would have been cool to see what Kim Hunter might have done
with the role. I'm not too familiar with Kim's career other than
apes - could she 'do' evil?

Kids of the '70's might remember the TV
shows of Sid and Marty Krofft, whether it was their kids shows (H.R.
Puffinstuff) or variety shows ("Donny and Marie"). They were kind of a poor
man's Muppets. Anyway, their shows have been making it to DVD in "complete
series" sets. They've already released "H.R. Pufinstuff" and two seasons of
"Land of the Lost"; on Tuesday their "Lidsville" arrives (one of my favorites as
a kid; I'm THERE!). Anyway, they've announced Season 3 of "Land of the Lost" for
this spring, maybe May. Our own Ron Harper took over the starring role for what
was the last season of this audience favorite. It'll be Virdon battling
dinosaurs (and Tim Burton chided on the POTA2001 commentary that "Land of the
Lost" was a big influence on the movie). And reportedly on a "Lidsville"
commentary the Kroffts mention they are working on a set for their show "Dr.
Shrinker" next, which starred Jay Robinson as the title character. Robinson was
a main ape in the episode "Tomorrow's Tide".
Anyway, there's some DVD ideas while waiting
for the cartoons. - - - Jeff

| Subject: OT: "Blockbuster" |
.html
.html
I picked up U.K. writer Tom Shone's movie
book "Blockbuster" at the library. It's a fun read about that big budget breed
of movie that many say started with Richard Zanuck's "Jaws". Shone did his
homework and it's got insights from guys like Spielberg, Lucas, Ridley Scott and
James Cameron, as well as Tim Burton and Richard Zanuck. The book doesn't really
discuss POTA2001 but on pg. 291:
"mention the summer of 2001 to
most people and they glaze over into a deep, thoughtful trance - - and only the
patient work of a team of blockbuster scholars has made the following
reconstruction possible. Let the records simply show that a movie called "The
Mummy Returns" opened only to see it's box office fall by 50 percent in week
two; that the same fate befell an entertainment entitled "Pearl Harbor", that a
movie known only as "A.I" fell by 52 percent, "Rush Hour 2" by 53 percent,
"Jurassic Park 3" by 56 percent, and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" by 57 percent,
although the film that takes the prize for being the blockbuster that people put
from their minds with the most speed was "Planet of the Apes", which fell by an
astonishing 60 percent. Needless to say, none of these movies caused the studios
much sweat, since they all made their money back, and "Planet of the Apes" and
"Pearl Harbor" in particular were acclaimed as rousing successes, taking in $359
million and $446 million respectively (worldwide). "We seem to be able to sell
almost anything, regardless of quality. It's a little frightening", one studio
head was heard to remark. The system had finally achieved a sort of awful,
inverted perfection: a summer of wall-to-wall blockbusters, and no
hits."
The book also pinpoints Burton's "Batman" as
the beginning of this Pavlov cinema, where people go to movies almost
automatically but don't seem to like them much:
(pg. 197) "'Batman" soon became the
blockbuster to see, unless you wished to announce your recent decision to join
an order of Trappist monks. It opened in 2, 194 theaters and took in $42.7
million it's first weekend, "the biggest opening in history", proclaimed Warner
Bros., and proceeded to take in $100 million in under 10 days - - another
record, breaking Hollywood's four-minute mile. But it also slid from pole
position faster than any movie that has ever made that much money (at that
time), too, taking just $30 million in it's second weekend, a drop of 25
percent. Blockbusters never used to fade like this - - "E.T." had stayed at the
top for 10 weeks, and increased it's grosses as it went along, while "Back to
the Future" had stayed up there for 13. But "Batman" came and went in the blink
of an eye - - that year, even "Look Who's Talking" had greater staying power at
the number 1 spot. The most popular movie of all time was also just the flavor
of the month. Far more so than "Jaws", it marked the beginning of the long, slow
erosion of audience word of mouth - - asked how much influence he thought the
negative reviews in "Variety" and "Time" would have, (producer Jon) Peters
responded, "None" - - and with it, a crucial shortening of the audience's
reaction time, which is to say our ability to respond to a movie, and then
signal our collective approval or dislike by either staying away, or flocking in
greater numbers. Who could tell, looking at "Batman"'s grosses, and their
tail-off, to what degree people had enjoyed the film or not? "The audience can
smell it faster than we can sell it", Spielberg had said of "E.T."'s release. As
of 1989, we had just a little less time in which to do so. The art of selling
bats had caught up with the art of smelling rats.
" "Batman" was the movie Hollywood had been
waiting for. Up until this point, the studio executives had not been under the
illusion that they could manufacture these things themselves. They could, in
(studio exec) Sid Sheinberg's phrase, seek to put lightning in a bottle, but as
that phrase revealed, they saw themselves as being in the bottling business, not
the lightning business. For the llightning, they still had to wait on the talent
- - those erratic creatures, the writers and directors. "Batman" was different.
Peters and Guber had pulled together a great-looking package, sprinkled it with
stars and synergistic tinsel dust, picked the wrong director, ridden roughshod
over him, made an okay movie, and then bulldozed their way into the public
consciousness for long enough to make it, briefly, the fastest grossing movie
ever. THAT got the studio's interest, for that, they knew a little bit more
about. That, they know how to do. The signal it sent out was as clear as the
batsignal above Gotham City: if you build it, they will
come".

I would agree with you here. She over does it in many places. You
get the feeling she's trying too hard to over compensate for the ape
make-up. <.html

.html Jeff,
I think this brings up a lot what's wrong with Hollywood these days.
One of the things I fondly remember about the POTA films was in
anticipation of them coming to our local theaters. Back then most
films were what they called 'platform' releases. Each POTA film
would premiere and run in just a few big Manhattan theaters for a
month or so. Living in Brooklyn, I had to wait until it that run
finished before the new POTA would hit a local theater. Unless you
could get someone to take you to one of the big theaters which I
never could. (The same was true of "Star Wars" a few years later but
I got my sister to take me.) I remember checking the newspaper every
week to see if the new film had come around yet. Of course the gave
the films a much longer life. They all seemed to be around for the
whole summer. <.html

This is the prototype of a possible new regular feature here in the
group. The goal will be to expand upon the known writings from the Sacred
Scrolls and other sources.
Now this is just a prototype so the text is not meant to be part of
the official Scrolls.
Anyway, we'd like to know if this would be something of interest.
Anyone who has any ideas or would like to contribute are also
welcome. <.html <.html

Oh yeah...She did it all.
She was pretty bad in some TV shows.
Night Gallery,as well as Gunsmoke and
Mission Impossible. But not in the movies
though as far as I can recall. Just good.
Beverly Garland's voice through the

I think she was inspired by her, but I also
think that Wanda inspired the Evil Zira
in that early remake script by Terry Hayes.
I glad it wasn't made. As much as I like
The Road Warrior, I didn't think much of it.
The one after it by Chris Columbus or who
ever was good, but didn't get made either.

We live in a much different era of movies these days. Films just don't have the theatrical life they used to. Some movies would be in theatres for several months, then would go out of circulation. They wouldn't get sold to TV right away if they'd done really well at the box office, so you had to wait if you wanted to see them again until it got a theatrical re-release. This helped grow the movie to mythic proportions in the minds of kids. This was especially true with me and PLANET. It would be years between viewings.
This all started ending in the mid-seventies when the GODFATHER movies got sold to TV just a couple years after they came out, then the home video cassette finally killed the theatrical re-release. Now only a few rear films get to play in theatres again, and often only in limited release -- except in L.A. where Jeff gets to go see pristine prints of PLANET on huge screens! D'OOOOOOHHHHHH!!!

In England in the seventies we had a similar re-release system. But we also
had double bill's on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon. We would keep checking the
local papers and months wouls go by before a double bill would be advetised and
then one of our parents would be hounded into taking us, sometimes six or seven
of us crammed into one car. I saw my first Apes movies this way as the films
weren't shown until after the series aired(I think) so I saw Beneath and
Battle as a double and had to rely on the Marvel comics and Horror Mags to put
them in order. We also had a school film club and I remember a gang of us
hounding this poor old English teacher to get hold of one of the films, sixteen
mil prints I think. We saw Battle again and thatÂ’s when I fell in love with that
film in particular. That and Escape which was the final one I got to see and
took on a magical air as it was so unexpected to actually see them interact with
seventies culture.
Ah memories.......

So true. After the POTA films hit the big local theaters, they would
come back again with a second feature (usually an older film) to the
smaller theaters. Then they would come back again months later as
the second feature with a newer film.
I remember I saw Escape again when it was the second feature to the
film "The Hot Rock". Then when Conquest hit the smaller
theaters "The Hot Rock" was its second feature. Damn I must have
seen that film four times.

True, Home Video and Cable have killed re-releases. Back then MGM
would trot out "Gone with the Wind" every 5-10 years in theaters.
There use to be several revival houses in NYC back in the '80s but
most are gone now. At least I got to see the early Connery Bond
films on the big screen back then. Too bad they never did a POTA
retrospective. <.html
