I was
just thinking that they would make some cool stylized
"glyphs"....
They would. In fact I always got that kind of vibe from them.
That's probably why Burton based much of the costumes
for the new one on Asian armor. But even the Japanese
have trouble with them. In kids newspapers they put furigana,
which is tiny hirigana, over the kanji characters to help them
read it. And just today my teacher, who is a native Japanese
herself, had to ask some of the Japanese students from a
particular region in Japan about the correct radicals for the
name of a temple in that area. When some one gives their
name, people will ask what Kanji they use to write it, since
two or more characters may have that same pronunciation.
The Japanese actually have different counters for different
things. Flat things, tall things, things with wheels.
Dozens
of different counters. You can't even use the same counter
for small animals that you use for larger animals, the lion
being the size divider. And often the counter changes,
depending on the number. 3s with a B sound, 1s, 6s, 8s
& 10s with a P sound, and the rest with an H sound. Even
a three year old will not mix them up. I've had this for
three
years and I still mix them up. Counting 10 small 4 legged
animals, you can't just say ich, ni, san, shi, go, roku, shichi,
hachi, kyuu, juu You count them like this . . .
i-piki
nihiki
sanbiki
yonhiki
gohiki
ro-piki
nanahiki
ha-piki
kyuhiki
juu-piki
Luckily for larger animals you just add tou, but it has to be
spelled to_o in hirigana, because tou means something else.

I did that too. Man, the lengths we'd go to before home video.
Anyone try to shoot movies or take stills of the screen? Didn't

Yeah, I tried that with my Super 8 camera. Terrible flicker.

By change Dghprobe, do you have any of these on video?
Hi: To answer your question, the only rare item I have on video so far is the 9-6-77 airing of "Escape" on the CBS Late Movie that night, the audio of the opening has been posted in Files.
The 1974 Apes TV series clips I have are audio only. I only have the CBS premiere showing of "The Liberator" and the CBS rerun of the first episode on audio cassette, if anyone is interested, but without commercials, except for the Bicentennial Minute at the end of "Liberator."
However -- someone could take the CBS audio of the closing credits of the first episode and re-match it with video of the closing credits of the first episode and basically "create" a vintage 1974 CBS item that can be included in any forthcoming Apes rarity DVD project.
Will send to Files any other rare Apes audio or video I run across. Thanks for enjoying. :-)

for all practical purposes, him in pajamas, I am however, very
excited about them continuing the line.
If they are branching into "Beneath" then they have to make a Ursus.
Maybe even another version of Nova (w/dogtags) that may be sold

the fewer they have to pay for likeness rights.
By coincidence, Carrie Fisher commented on this on Dinner for Five

they don't have to go to the expense of doing someone else. Second,
Heston is really the most recognizable human star from the film
series. No one of the other human actors (except maybe Ricardo
Montalban) even come close to him. So for marketing purposes it is
easier to market a figure with an known actor's face on it.

Dave
Not a Brit, but I wanted to say that I've never seen this show. I don't think it's been shown here in the States since its original run in 1967. The show was not successful and only lasted for 26 episodes. Here's a comment left on IMDB.com:
"Combat!" went off the air in 1967 after a successful, five year run. "Garrison's Gorillas," also from Selmur Productions, took over Combat's same time period on Tuesday nights on ABC. Where Combat had a great character actor in Vic Morrow leading a strong supporting cast, Garrison had Ron Harper in the lead, and by time he got to the "Planet of the Apes" TV series some years later, he was still just as wooden and one dimensional as he is here. Only Christopher Cary and Cesare Danova(you know him as the mayor in "Animal House") are any good acting-wise, and the writing wasn't nearly good enough for a show that was TV's attempt to cash in on the success of "The Dirty Dozen," released the same year. CBS's take on the genre, "Jericho" (1967) was slightly better but was also filmed on the same MGM back lot just like
Combat and Garrison's Gorillas were. By now you would see the same sets and backgrounds on three different war shows. And by the late 60's war was a little too real on the evening news and these type of WWII shows looked unrealistic and had run their course. "Garrison's Gorillas" was canceled and replaced by "The Mod Squad" in 1968.

I snuck an audio cassette recorder into the theatre when I went to see the PLANET/BENEATH double feature in 1971. I remember I was very paranoid I'd get caught. The audio wasn't great. You could hear the echo from the theatre walls, but I had a recording of most of PLANET with all the audience responses, laughs and cheers and such. That's one tape I wish I'd saved, but it got mislaid long ago.

<<
YIEEEEEEE! EVERYBODY'S GETTIN' ON ATOP TRIGGER!, 31 July 2001 Author: witrack (witrack@...)
from USA
This amazingly bad film stars a young Tyne Daly who's married to an older
farmer dude who ain't got no wind in his windsock, dig?
So since Tyne
ain't gettin' any, she gets it on with a young drifter played by Eric B.. This
leads up to one of the most twisted love scenes in the history of cinema. Tyne
and Eric get it on ON A HORSE. I bet most woulda thought that wasn't humanly
possible, or even horsely possible.
There are some hilariously bad
scenes. Like the part where Tyne's limpo hubby starts goin' psycho when he
learns his young wife is gettin' it on wit a younger, more virile Aryan studboy.
So what does the hubby do? He gets so ticked off when he's doin' chores on his
crapola farm that HE LOPS OFF A LIVE CHICKEN'S HEAD. I can't be sure if the lop
scene was faked but it sure as sheat looked like a real cluck, Daddy
Warbucks.
And the climax where one of the three main characters gets
smoked is so lame it's a laff riot. Yes, The Adulteress. The one movie Tyne Daly
wishes she could live down. Not to mention everyone else involved with this
flick. >> <.html

Hi Rory,
I remember Longstreet well, but I haven't seen it since it first
played on tv, I guess. I don't imagine it ever did reruns. I seem to
remember liking it when I was young. I really enjoy Marooned with
Franciscus as the astronaut with rocket troubles again. For a POTA
fan, it makes for a good prequel to Beneath. I hadn't seen it for
years, but taped it off the tv a year or so ago. I thought it was
suspenseful, and well written. Worth viewing if you can find a copy.

Oh, and by Suits, I'm talking about the soulless scum
(insert F***s) that claim to be making a movie "better"
by forcing the creative talent to change their vision,
when really all they care about is the bottom line, and
just want to increase profits. I just wanted to clear up
any confusion there. There is a special hell for them.
It consists of being forced to watch an endless string
of bad movies (and I don't mean good bad). But it
doesn't work very well on them, because in addition
to being soulless, they're also brainless. So not only
don't they realize just how bad the movies are, but as
they're watch them their taking notes in their head to
suggest for the next film project they're assigned to.

| Subject: [Planet of the Apes] Re: TV series cancellation |
.htmlThe POTA series only lasted half a season. Unfortunately it was a
victim of network politics. Fred Silverman never wanted the show but
it was forced on him by William Paley's wife. The original time
period was to be Tuesdays at 8PM. However in the Spring of 1974 it
was moved to Fridays at 8PM.
CBS had not had a hit show in the Friday 8PM time period for a
number of years. The two sitcoms that had premiered there in the
Fall of '73 had both failed. But the mid-season replacement 'Good
Times' (a spin-off from 'Maude' and 'All in the Family') had held
its own up against 'Sanford & Son'. 'Chico & the Man' was a new show
for NBC in the Fall of '74 in the 8:30 slot and had a lot of buzz
around it since Freddie Prinze was a hot comic at the time.
The logic of switching POTA's & 'Good Times' time slots was
that 'Good Times' and 'Sanford & Son' appealed to the same ethinc
audience; thus, why spilt that audience. The POTA films had done
well on Fridays, so the TV series was likely to do the same.
So 'Good Times' was moved to the Tuesday 8PM time period,
against 'Happy Days' which had yet to take off as a hit, and the
POTA TV series was moved to Fridays.
While the series did not do well in overall ratings it did very well
with children & teens. But it did not do well with adults,
particularly Adults over 50. CBS at the time didn't feel children
and teens were an attactive audience and went after older Adults (a
decision they are still regreting to this day), thus the POTA TV
series was canceled. The series was replaced with two forgettable
sitcoms that also lasted less than a full season.
Now the question is would the POTA series had done better against
'Happy Days'. 'Good Times' beat it for the first year but then 'Happy
Days' exploded during the '75-'76 TV season. 'Good Times' continued
to limp along for several years, being shuffled around the CBS
schedule starting in 1976, losing audience each & every year till it
was eventually canceled at in the spring of 1979. (Who knows if POTA
had been a hit and forced 'Happy Days' to be canceled, we might have
been spared 'Laverne & Shirley', 'Joanie love Chachi' and numerous
other terrible spin-offs.)
CBS continued to struggle to find a hit for the Friday 8PM slot for
years. Even moving MASH in the fall of 1974 to that slot did no
good. In 1977 CBS scheduled Wonder Woman there to moderate success
mostly due to Redd Foxx walking out of Sanford & Son and Freddie
Prinze committing suicide. Wonder Woman lasted two years in the slot
and was followed there by the Incredible Hulk which was also a
moderate success. CBS didn't have a true hit on Fridays at 8 until
it moved the Dukes of Hazzard, which was already an established hit,
there in 1981.
Now if you look at Burke & Virdon they do resemble Bo & Luke Duke.
So maybe if they gave the astronauts a suped up car, Urko a dopey
deputy, had Zaius wear a white suit and put Galen in cut-offs; the
TV series might have been more successful.

Dr. Zaius recalls this passage in PA68. Perhaps not one of the
Lawgiver's more magnanimous moments towards humans. Still, it would
be interesting to know more about who Proteus was.

I just heard that Johnny Carson has died. One of my earliest POTA memories is when Kim & Roddy went on the Tonight Show. They brought along Baby Milo and he bit Johnny's finger. Beyond that the POTA films always premiered on Friday nights and we were allowed to stay up to watch the Tonight Show on those nights. So in many ways Johnny is loosely linked to POTA in my mind. I'm sure everyone's thought and prayers go out to his wife and children and of course his protg, David Letterman.
James,
Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter were on the Johnny Carson Show on June 2, 1971. Baby Milo was on too and sat on Kim Hunter's lap. Milo did misbehave a bit and Johnny lectured him on treating big stars with respect if he wanted to get ahead in Hollywood. It's very funny.
A tape of the show can be ordered from Johnny Carson's web site. I bought it several years ago but it was very expensive.
