It's never said exactly who Proteus is. It is just a section of the
Scrolls that Zaius mentions in the cave.

hunter could probably give a better answer, but here is my answer:
the dvd comes from a laserdisc that contains numerous extra scenes that make the movie more interesting.

Yes they were indeed filmed and included in the Extended Version of
Battle. See my earlier post on the subject.

If you wish to see those scenes, clips are available in the Video
section of the Group Website:

It is an extended version that includes scenes with the Alpha-Omega
bomb. It was only release on lasardisc in Japan and in TV
syndication here during the late '70s and early '80s.

A complete listing of what was added is in the Database section
(http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/database) under 'Battle
Uncut'.

Originally had the CBS version of Battle on tape. When a local
station ran Battle is was cut down from the Extended Version and
included the Alpha-Omega bomb scenes. A friend and I edited the two
tapes together for a complete version of Battle.

James,

I remember the comics and novel of BATTLE included the Alpha Omega Bomb but I never knew they really had filmed those scenes.

Are they included on the DVD Rob or Ron was talking about?

are some more accessible than others?

Unfortunately the Carson Website discontinued selling individual
episodes some time ago. I beleive is was $100 per show.

We all hope that they bring that feature back now that Johnny has
died.

Just want to remind everyone that the Marvel covers poll concludes
tomorrow. So far the cover of issue 12 is in the lead, closely
followed by the cover of issue 17. There's just about 24 hours left
to vote so if you haven't yet, be sure and get in there now.

All the covers are available to view on Hunter's site as well as our
own Group Website.

The Medicom vs. Sideshow poll still has a few days left to go and
Medicom is still leading Sideshow by two to one.

I can't believe that I'm the only one who liked the cover to issue #5.
Why does everyone like #12 so much? Don't get me wrong. I like it
too. I liked all the Bob Larkin cover paintings. I just liked some of
the others a little more.

Next, there should be a "least favorite" poll.
I never liked #26 (Viking Apes) too much.

Regarding the Marvel magazine covers, has anyone else noticed the
connection between a couple of the Marvel covers and the POTA Addar
model kits?

Look closely at the background apes on #17. Look familiar?
They are all "modeled" on the Addar Aldo model.

The other one is a little harder to see since it's not an exact copy,
but the Gorilla general on the cover of # 19 ("Demons of the
Pyschedrome") has some bits of the Ursus model in him. Imagine him
minus the pistol belt and if his right leg were bent like the model,
then it would be easier to see.

I have to say the sideshow Apes are the best ever made.
All I have ever wanted since I've been collecting is a full set of
Apes in the same scale and size.I like the 2001 Hasbro alot.Like the
true Apeness.
Imagine a set of original Apes in that style.
Zira with a funky hair do,Zaius as a real orangatang.

I've been tempted to paint the re-issued ones now, as an adult and

I agree with you both. Ron Harper was perfect. I don't know about
the theater bit that you mention concerning James Naughton, but I
think they both exhibited personalities that fit the parts they
played. James Naughton, cute dimples and smile, etc., is a bit of a
strut! Cute, but not the kind of guy that misses his family and
home. Ron Harper just really feels like the buried emotion guy-type
husband/father that has a drive to go home. I think it's actually
    pretty real.

20th Century Fox To Quit India
Twentieth Century Fox has closed down its Indian distribution office in Mumbai (Bombay) after 73 years, citing a decline of interest in dubbed movies on the subcontinent. Fox's marketing manager in Mumbai, Paresh Manjrekar, told the website WebIndia: "It is a fact that the market for dubbed English films is not the same as it used to be once upon a time. A majority of English films, apart from a handful few, have got a poor response at the box-office in recent times. Considering the publicity costs and the efforts involved in releasing a film, it may not be a profitable proposition. And to add insult to injury, these dot heads don't like POTA!"

I've been racking my brains and I can't remember having seen Harper in

Character wise, as a kid I liked Burke best. I guess I responded to his more
'boyish' character. As an adult I find Virdon the more interesting. I've always
thought Naughton was the better actor though. Maybe Harper thought so too

For sheer energy, invention, beauty and enthusiasm, Indian (and more so
Asian) movies run rings around Hollywood. Hollywood knows it too - look how
many movies from foreign countries are being re-made.

Hollywood is losing (has lost?) its way - it should sit up and take notice.

The imagery from 'Hero' and 'Flying Daggers' will live in my mind a lot longer
than that of 'I Robot' or 'Van Helsing'.

Speaking of 'I robot' I found myself experiencing a little bit of a Conquest 'vibe'

Yeah I'm inclined to agree. I saw it in a nice ultra modern stadium seat theatre which tends to enhance one's opinion of the movie and it still SUCKED!

Well the results are in and the cover to issue #12 came in first:
A great cover but I'm still surprised so many voted for it over other great covers.

The cover to issue #17 was second:
Another great cover. No surprise there.

The covers from issues #1, #7 and #16 tied for third. While the covers for issues #13, #19 & #27 got no votes. Maybe we should put these three in a poll for least favorite cover.

One surprise the infamous Ape Viking cover from issue #26 actually got one vote. Well I guess there has to be one in every group;-)

here saw a POTA film (other than the 2001 remake) in a theater?

For me it was the summer of 1974 during the 'Go Ape' festival. Since
then it has been TV airing, audio tapes, video tapes and now DVD.
But they are something I would really like to experience in a
    theater again.

I saw the first film at a neighborhood pub/pizzeria/theater about six
years ago. It was part of their weekend matinee revival program. It
was a beautiful venue... HUGE screen... and the 35mm print was pretty
decent too for being 30 years old!

    I watched BOTH showings.

I've begged them to repeat it... but have yet to be successful.

Funny you should ask. The last time I saw POTA in a theatre was exactly
one year ago (Feb. 4) at the Arclight theater. Afterwards there was a
discussion with Eric Greene, Mort Abrahams and Buck Kartalian. I saw it
about 4 times in the '90's under interesting circumstances. Never saw it as
a kid in a theatre. I've also seen "Beneath" and "Escape" in a theater in
    the '90's, once each. - - - Jeff

The last time I saw any ape movie on the big screen would have been back in
the 70's when they were re-released to coincide with the then popularity of the
    TV show.

I don't recall any marathons where all five were shown. Usually they were split
into double bills, with no regard for continuity. In my regionThe original was
paired with Escape - Beneath was paired with Conquest - Battle was shown
with 'Hell Boats' (James Franciscus... Yayyyy!).

I had the pleasure of once watching the original on DVD on a top-of-the-

Well, the first time, in 1990 it was only me and two other people in the
theater! But when I saw "Beneath" there was a lot of laughter at the film's
expense. But they are older movies and sensibilities have changed (I think
for the worse. I think people expect to laugh these days at action/sci-fi
movies. The heroes throw out one-liners. People want a roller coaster ride,
they don't want to take ideas seriously. And Heston has become a caricature
in the culture with his NRA image. He's an easy target (as is William
Shatner, who has turned that to his advantage). - - - Jeff

I thought Ron Harper and Naughton were a perfect match. Their different
acting styles meshed perfectly. If the show had a problem it was the
scripts, not the cast (except some of the guests).
By the way, Naughton is in a new theatrical movie called "Fascination",

that the POTA collectible market is "soft". It could've been their
"Spiderman" but they needed to hit the new movie out of the park. Plus
"Sideshow" figures are expensive for the average person. Despite that I was
hoping the "Sideshow" figures would mark an upswing but I guess not. Oh
well, Fox saved us a lot of money. - - - Jeff

Heston took advantage of that sense of caricature as well. He did

To be specific, Shatner has had a good career for a long time, even before
"Star Trek". And in the '80's he had the "Trek" movies and "T.J. Hooker".
But lately, maybe less than 10 years he's become "William Shatner", and
that's during a down time for "Star Trek". The Priceline commercials, the
cameos in movies ("Miss Confidenciality"), the ghostwritten books and now
TV. It's "Shatner the industry". It's very instructive on career management
for actors. And it reflects too the "reality show" mentality of the culture
now. Famous for being famous. Maybe someone should jump start POTA that way.
    "The Real POTA". - - - Jeff

Well, they must be selling somewhat decent mo matter what he is

there is still only a buy 2 limit on all the Ape figures. I know, I

I hope they continue on to do the TV series also.

    Subject: Sideshow Soldier Ape
    .html
I just got the Sideshow Soldier Ape today (the regular version).
I think he looks great. The head sculpt looks very accurate to me
although some of the details like the facial wrinkles have been
softend from the prototype sculpt that is pictured on the front of
    the box.
I picked him up in a comic book store (Amok Time on Long Island, NY)
and I got to pick through a couple of them to find the best one. You
can see a hint of his molars on the right side of his mouth. Some
figures had those teeth painted more promiently than others and
    looked a little funny.
The boots look great and are complete with the buckles on the sides.
His leather-like tunic can be removed and he has a full shirt on
underneath. This will make it possible to make a cusom Julius figure.

The gloves are interesting. He has black pleather "cuffs" that taper
at the wrist and molded glove hands to give the illusion of a
gauntlet. The effect works pretty well. They took the time to sculpt
a seem on the inner part of the glove, around the thumb, where it's
less likely to be seen, but neglected to sculpt the seems on the back
    of the hand.
The rifle is beautiful. Very detailed. The bolt even pulls back to
    reveal an empty chamber.
The club is nice. Maybe a little too long? I'm not sure.
I was a little dissapointed in the horizontal seems on the tunic and
gloves. They aren't raised at all, just two lines of stitching.
I mean, if the crappy Hasbro Gorillas could have raised seems, then
    Sideshow could have done it.

For me the worst part of the set is the bandolier. The color looks
all wrong to me (too tan) and it's made from a very cheap material.
It's too bad because the black sculpted "wallets" look great.
I made my own bandolier from some dark brown pleather and used
the "wallets" and "buttons" from the Sideshow bandolier. This looked
much better to me. He now matches the color scheme of the Medicom
Soldier Ape. If I ever get a chance, I'll try and post some pictures.

I put the General's helmet from the Hasbro Ursus on him to see how it
would look. Not too bad. It's a tight fit and it's sculpted so that
the back, bottom edge splays out a little, but if you can push it
down on his head far enough, it's not too noticeable.
So, if they don't get around to making an Ursus, it may be possible
    to customize one.

I haven't seen the Exclusive version of the Soldier Ape yet, but I
hear that it's kind of rip off for what you get. I think I can make a
whistle out of some sculpey clay and there is a pole w/a looped
string from a recent G.I.Joe set- "Secret of the Savage Swamp" or
something like that, that can be the "man catcher".

    Turns out there weren't.
To my surprise and disapointment, it seemed like the majority of

    I was so pissed!

Speaking of theaters, I'm wondering when was the last time anyone
here saw a POTA film (other than the 2001 remake) in a theater?

For me it was the summer of 1974 during the 'Go Ape' festival.

Yeah, me too.  June 1974.  Haven't seen PLANET or any of the others in a theatre since.

    Thanks guys.

The UK cover for issue 16 was another instance where Marvel
UK did a 're-imagining' of an existing US cover (3) (They did it
with the UK issue 11 too (which was based on the US cover,
    issue 6)

Does anyone know WHY they might have done this?

Thanks, John! I'm glad you like them. Now that it's been a couple of
months, I can see a few warts here and there that I wish I had seen at
the time, but overall, I'm pretty satisfied with how they came out.
We were very lucky to get Mike's tapes!

Speaking of Mike, I just received one of his Mego reproduction boxes.
It's *incredible*. I highly recommend his boxes to anyone who has the
    Megos.

1968 was a good year for apes in screen: "2001 a space odyssey"
and "planet of the apes". There was a lot of talk about what make up
was best, but the oscar go to .... I also heard some stories about
two 2001 ape costumes being stolen, some kind of industrial spy
between "2001" and "POTA". I think Chambers and Freeborn have two
different sollutions for two differents problems.
Now, There is a great Stanley Kubrick exhibit in Berlin, and some
ape mask and costume is show.
I made a cry for help: Someone can take pics (as detailed as
    possible) and share?

    Thanks

I saw POTA for a first time in TV possible around 1976,at that time
most of the tv in Spain was B/W so I must wait to learn about plum
for gorillas, green for chimps and orange for orangoutans. I also
saw all the tv series in B/W. POTA and the rest of the pentalogy was
run several times an was some kind of controversy betwen right wing
(I remember one teacher blaming for abomination and heresy, a good
friend for Zaius and Ursus) and left wing. With the late 70´s come
color TV, but I must wait to 1985 to see POTA in full glory, that
was in a cinema in Granada, Spain, next time and last was two years
later in the Rocio cinema in Dos Hermanas Seville. I have my reflex
camera with a 400 asa film but I only can have a blurry Icarus.
I also saw "Beneath" in 16mm in a cineforum, but never saw the rest
in big screen, I think "Battle" never was show in big sreeen in
    Spain, going direct to TV.
POTA have a great apreciation in Spain. There also was fake rumours
about POTA being filmed in Spanish Lanzarote island or Tabernas
desert, Almeria ("Indiana Jones and the last crusade", "Conan", "for
a few dollars more" and a lot of spaguetty westerns).

    Ape rule in Spain too.

I hope they continue. I  would love to see Julius and above all Ceaser in the chains
and green jump suit. Asfar as the TV series A Galen and an Urko would be just dandy.

I just today, spoke with a guy selling them (www.amoktime.com) and he
said that he thought they were selling pretty good.
I have my fingers crossed for them to at least do a few Beneath
    figures.
