Don Pedro Colley said the character was named Onogoro. He was so pissed
about seeing him called "Negro" in the credits there's no way the script HE
used had the character called Negro. Fun fact: Colley was in George Lucas'
first sci-fi movie "THX 1138" and remembers Lucas talking about this "Star
Wars" thing he wanted to do. - - - Jeff

If we get enough letters sent, we might, at last, get some really
cool TV Series figures.Whether you are a fan of the TV Series or not,
the characters would be fantastic action figures with some excellent
potential accessories. It's a great opportunity and anybody who can
spare a stamp, PLEASE JOIN THE CAMPAIGN! John, Scrolls.

Lidsville is possibly the earliest show I remember as a kid
I used to stare at a lidsville coloring book or something when I was real
young
Land Of The Lost is my all time favorite TV show but i'm not sure if I
actually saw any of the Krofft shows in their original runs as I was born in
1971 and just a bit too young for these classics

Very good thinking, Elaine. Clearly they were going for descriptive
names, then!

Just curious if any one has ordered the new Sideshow Apes and if so,
which one, or ones?

I have ordered

The Mutant Leader
The Mutant Jailer
Astronaut Brent
Beneath Taylor exclusive
Caesar
and of course, The Mighty Ursus.
I wanted to order 2 of the Ursus figure so I could put one on my
desk at work, but Sideshow wouldn't let me :(

Luke I have ordered every single one and yes it's
costing a lot of money but since they are all spaced
out it's not too bad. It seems that my goal in life is
to own every single bit of POTA material!!. When will
the madness end?? And then there's Palisades!! Poor
house here I come!

I've ordered all of those as well, but only Ursus, Jailer and Taylor through
Sideshow. I ordered the rest through alteregocomics.com (cheaper).

They probably only let you order 1 Ursus because that is the exclusive version with
the machine gun. If you want another (non-exclusive), you can get it from another
source.

Apes seems to be one of those concepts that evolves with the times.
With all that's happened over the last few years and with Guantanamo
Bay being one reaction, I've re-visited Aldo's attitude in Battle.
Here's a guy faced with a vague but real, to him, threat of
destruction, a threat aimed at his people and culture, possibly
backed up by weapons of mass destruction. He has, within his society,
a potential threat, namely humans, who only a matter of years earlier
were torturing and enslaving his kind and might well support humans
attacking from outside. When Aldo locks the humans in the corral, is
he wrong? John, Scrolls.

Hi, folks! My name´s Arthur and I´m from Brazil - Rio de Janeiro, to be more
precise.

Well, the Planet of the Apes TV series were presented for a long time here in
Brazil and the films are cult movies, as well as in the US.

I´ve been pretty much interested in rewatching the tv series episodes and I
know they are available in DVD in the US, but not here in Brazil. That´s a real
pity.

What impresses me the most about POTA is that it is still up-to-date in terms
of how badly man have been treating animals and the way we deal with the danger
of nuclear weapons.

Well, that´s all for now. I´ll be getting in touch again soon.

What Aldo did with the humans may not have been 'right', but I think what he did was just.
His actions were out of panic and reflect what the US government did with the Japanese-
Americans during WW2.

Aren't you able to order DVDs from the US, or won't they play in your DVD player because you're a different region?

I'm surprised Aldo didn't have more of a following. Sure Caesar led
them to freedom, but freedom from the same creatures who just years
earlier had enslaved and tortured their entire race. Now they are to
live together? I think this was one of the many downsides to Battle.
They took a character filled with such emotion and rage from Conquest
and "softened" him for the sake of the family audience. Caesar's
distrust and anger for the human race was justified in Conquest and
that's what made it such a emotionaly driven film. I think their
would have been many who would not have been able to let those
feelings go so easily. Living in peace with man would be hard for any
ape who had been subjected to "reconditioning". Aldo's distrust of
man both in and outside of their ape city is understandable.

I think because the version on the Sideshow site is an exclusive, limited to 500
pieces. The exclusive version comes with a sub-machine gun, while the regular
version doesn't. They probably won't let you order two in order to be fair to everyone.

The maurder (which is the Sideshow exclusive version, limited to 500 pieces), comes
with a pole with a noose on the end (for capturing humans around the neck). The
standard gorilla soldier (called an enforcer) is the same figure, but with a rifle.

My friend, Michael Crawford, did a review of both figures on his toy site. If you wan't,
you can check them out here. If you search the site, he also has reviews for Zaius,
Cornelius, Zira and Taylor:

Thanks, Elaine. POTA makes me remind of my childhood, when I used to watch the

in Brazil by Globo TV Network.

I´d like to know something: is there any CD available with films soundtrack? I
just love it. Does anyone know?

Hi Arthur,

I have a cd with the Original motion picture soundtrack for the
Planet of the Apes. It also has "Suite" on it from Escape. Is that
what you are looking for? I don't know what else is out there.

What´s your opinion about some of the mistakes people could find in POTA, the
first movie? Here aresome of them:

The first exterior shots of the spacecraft in the desert lake show the
spaceship's hatch door already gone... before the astronauts blow it off with
an explosive charge minutes later in the movie.

Other: This is a mistake between the first 2 Apes films. In the beginning of
the first Apes movie as the ship is sinking Taylor looks at the Earth time
chronometer and it says 11-25-3978 as the date. In Beneath the Planet of the
Apes Brent tells his skipper that the year is 3955. They were following
Taylor's trajectory and Brent does meet Taylor but according to the second film
Brent got there 20 years earlier than Taylor.

Continuity: When the 3 of them are swimming and one sees foot prints, he calls
to Taylor - when Taylor starts out of the water his hair is wet, but when he
stands up out of the water it is dry.

Continuity: At the end of the movie, just before discovering the ruins of the
Statue of Liberty, the horse and riders are traveling along the beach. If you
look closely, you can see a parallel set of hoofprints in the sand. Apparently
the surf didn't wash away the evidence of a previous take.

Continuity: Towards the end of the movie, at the cave, you can see that the
rifle Charlton Heston has been firing has no magazine inserted.

Continuity: Shortly after the astronauts crash land in the desert lake, they
discover that the female crew mate is dead, her body is mummified due to an air
leak in her cubicle. The mistake is that when her body is first seen, the arms
and hands are folded across her chest. Seconds later, when the water starts
rushing in, the point of view from inside her cubicle shows her arms at her
sides.

Revealing: At the beginning of the movie, when the hatch is blown on the ship,
you can see both windows blow off the ship and a piece of the nose by the
window almost blow off. Looks like the special effects department got a little
carried away with the explosives.

Continuity: At the end of the movie when Taylor and the woman find the ancient
ruins of the Statue of Liberty, their distance from the statue seems to change
between shots. In the first shot (when it only shows them and the torch) they
seem to be almost next to it. In the next shot (when it only shows them and the
crown) they are farther away. And in the last shot (when it shows Taylor
kneeling from behind and the full torso of the statue) he is even farther away
from it.

If you check ebay they have CD's for the other films as well. Film
Score Siver Age Classics put out a limited to 3000 pressed copies CD
containing the original Beneath the Planet of the Apes soundtrack by
Leonard Rosenman, containing the LP version and a complete score
version never before availible. There is also a CD for Conquest by
Tom Scott and Battle by Leonard Rosenman on the same disc. It also
has the TV theme by Lalo Schifrin as a bonus. Both disc's come with
really informative booklets with lots of photos. Both can be found on
ebay for about $20 dollars each. I have both and they are amazing.

This is the only one that I'll tackle.

In Planet the clock says 3978 vs. Beneath where Brent stated he took
a time reading before reentry and it was 3955. In Escape the time
clock is noted as also 3955. Why the mistake? Simple error on the
part of the filmmakers. How can it be explained? A clock like that
could work serveral ways. One way would be to measure the relative
positions of several stars to determine the passage of time. Now the
reading in Planet was taken on the surface of the planet where there
could be some distortion of the reading from the atmosphere. The
clock readings refered to in both Beneath & Escape were both taken
while the ship was in orbit, thus ensuring a more accurate reading.

Hola Arthur,

There are plenty of CDs with POTA movie music out there.
For the first movie there are 4 that I know of and that I have:

Company
11 tracks Intrada
10 tracks Project 3
18 Tracks Varese Sarabande (The one that includes Escape tracks)
+ another one that I don't have the info for right now.

The Varese Sarabande on is my favorite not only because it has more
tracks, but also because they used the colorfull French movie poster
as a cover.

There are also CDs put out by "Film Score Monthly" for the following:
1) Beneath CD (I still don't have this one. )
2) Conquest & Battle the Planet of the Apes CD (combined) -31 tracks

For Escape, there is no 'official' release, but there are bootlegs
floating around:
1) Escape from the Planet of the Apes - 16 Tracks
2) Another that is a 'Gerry Goldsmith' CD that has Beneath tracks and
another non-ape movie (I don't have this either)

You can get ALL of these of EBAY. Some are very cheap ($3 ~ $4),
others are harder to get (Beneath) for cheap prices but you can still
get them if you want to pay more. (Beneath always seems to be
available for $25).

There are also some japanese CDs (at least for the first movie), but
there is no new tracks on them.

Welcome to the group.

Let us know what is available from Brazil. We know there are spanish
magazines from Mexico and Spain. Anything that was only available in
Brazil?

Thank you all for the precious information givem about POTA soundtrack.

Well, Dario, you ask me about magazines here in Brazil. I know there are comics
which can be bought from collectors. I´m also trying to get some, but they are
usually very expensive. I don´t know of any other special material.

You know what? POTA was such a great hit in Brazil that it continues to be
remembered even by the new generation. Last February, during the famous
carnival parade in Rio, one of the samba schools presented hundreds od people
wearing apes costumes. It was awsomo. The costumes were just perfect, very
similar to the ones worn at POTA. Did anyone see that on TV there in the US?

really informative booklets with lots of photos. Both can be found on
ebay for about $20 dollars each. I have both and they are amazing.

Thanks to Chris L. and Greg P., my page now hosts an ad for the
re-release of the Apes movies on VHS back in the '80s (when they were
released at an affordable $19.95 instead of the $100 each the first
time they were released). You can find the ad in the "Misc" section.

Some great stuff you posted, I have a few of these things too. I have quite a few of the
Apes inspired FUCT t-shirts from the early 90's, now faded from wear. The House wallet
and t-shirts from House Industries are must haves. I think they still sell the wallet for $40.
I got it free when I purchased the fonts.

Interesting . . . Except that, aside from a couple of tunes. Adam and the Ants, suck!  I should know I had an album.  But it you want to cover a good band, try Redd Kross', Zira (Call Out My Name)  But you need a gospel chior backing you to do it right.

Is John Landis, the director of Animal House, the same person
who's listed as "Jake's Friend" in "Battle For The Planet Of The
Apes"?

I keep trying to see if I can even figure out who "Jake's Friend" is
in the film, but all I can come up with is the guy with the afro, who
looks nothing like John Landis just after Aldo helps the humans
put the wheel on the cart.

Jeff, it's interesting how more recent reviews of the series have
been a lot more sympathetic than the old 'formulaic','hackneyed'
cliches thrown at it.Alex Stewart, in his 'Cult TV' booklet for SFX
Magazine in 2000 said 'The makeup effects are still impressive, and
some of the stories surprisingly sophisticated for the format;the
episode where a blind chimp falls in love with Burke, believing him
to be an ape like herself, is touching without becoming mawkish, and
refuses to kop out at the end'.Another review(I can't recall the
reference)used Apes as a TV example of 'quality doesn't sell'.Apes
stands up well, in my humble opinion, agains any similar TV Series
and just because it was cancelled doesn't mean it wasn't good.John.

No!  I though his uniform would be dirty, but it's not! (Of course, I can make it dirty if I want to.  In fact, I have red sandstone rocks from Lake Powell and may just rub those on the uniform!)  He does come with all the accessories of the regular version, the only difference is the beard, which I'd rather it had since Heston mostly has a beard throughout the movie.

The only thing I'm disappointed about with this figure is you can't roll up the sleeves.  Also, the backpack, though wonderfully detailed, is too large.

Other than that I'm pretty happy with it.  Now, if I'm waiting for the Lawgiver statute.

Yeah, I have that review. It's "Halliwell's Television Companion".
Halliwell, who does the famous film guides. He said, "Clever retread of a
powerful movie in a format somewhere between "The Fugitive" and "Gulliver's
Travels". Unfortunately it was badly scheduled, and the usual public
indifference to quality merchandise caused a sudden cancellation". - - -

Thanks for the info on your Taylor, I hope mine arives soon. I am
still hoping since the Taylor and Nova pack is still a prototype that
they release the Taylor with a beard. If not, I will have to buy a
bearded version off of Ebay and make my own.

He's a skinny long-haired guy.  You can see him in the main titles, then again when Aldo starts rounding up the humans to take them to the corral.  I think Landis yells, "Hey!"

      Welcome, Barb!
You are absolutely right. I received my whopping great Lawgiver a
week or so ago and he is truly amazing. He's huge but he doesn't
take over the place. Who wouldn't want a Lawgiver in their living
room to pontificate from his podium every now and then! Love that
      Lawgiver!

I have ordered a few other Sideshow Collectibles as well, but none
so far can compare to our bookish Lawgiver. Beware the beast man!

Hi there. I've got them, they're ready for ordering. If you want a
copy, send $6 cash or check to me, Kassidy. Email me for my address
      at valwp@....

Our James has provided a free copy of the Ape Herald, so if you
mention you're a member of this group in your email to me, you'll get
a $2 discount. The magazine will be only $4 for members of this
      group.

      I can't accept pre-payments for future Simian Scrolls. I make a
      lousy accountant.

The magazine's getting better all the time, you'll enjoy this one, at
      roll-back prices:)

Yeah, it's kind of a bogus name. It is referred to by the CC as a
roadside zoo. The pictures were from PETA, I believe. Although, I
have to disagree with some of the ways PETA portrays animal cruelty,
these are pictures and they do go with the other pictures we have
seen of Chubbs. These pictures make me really think about the use
        of chimps in the movies.

You will not believe this, but the Amarillo Wildlife Refuge has just
updated their site (which is rarely accessible) and posted Chubbs as
their animal of the month. You HAVE to check this out!!!
        http://www.amarillowildliferefuge.org/

Don't think they don't listen to us!!

This is the link to the [PETA] pictures I posted of Chubbs.
        http://www.peta.org/feat/awr/ .

        Hmmm...

After having replied to this with a link to the site, I just thought
it worth mentioning that the page that displays first will be a page
looking for contributions. It might be helpful to find out from
another one of the overseeing chimp rescue organizations whether it
is felt that a contribution would be used to benefit the animals or
line the pockets of the Amarillo Wildlife Refuge. I would hate to
see a lot of money going to the wrong place. Maybe a gift of an
enrichment activity or a fruit basket or something special directed
specifically to Chubbs would be more of a benefit.

These are just my random thoughts. I think a bit of research would
be helpful and personal notes to the Refuge asking what would go
directly to Chubbs -- as a token of ape-preciation to an actor in
one of your favorite movies. If the Refuge turns out to be
legitimate and in dire need of funds, then a donation might be
helpful. There is a bit out there if you Google Amarillo Wildlife
Refuge. Some of it is horrifying. It might take some work to find
        the truth.

someone else gets to it first. (BTW, if you are
concerned about seeing it before buying, don't worry
too much - if you order direct from
sideshowcollectibles.com they are VERY good at
customer returns, no questions asked - although they
do like it if you tell them what you don't like so
they can fix it for the future - I'm pretty new at the
collecting thing, so I always buy from them directly,
as I've heard some horror stories about retailers not
doing returns, damaging the items, etc. etc.) Anyway
        - I'll let you know when I post the pics...

P.S. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
