good displayed with the figures, I wouldn't care what it was made of
or who made it. I JUST WANT ONE!!!! LOL

.htmlActually, this is an interesting question. I always just assumed they were
in a relationship, I guess because how close they were. But there's no real
indication. Unless at that point they were aiming it toward kids and didn't
want any overt kissing and stuff (except ape kissing is alright). Maybe
Lewis was gay (ouch! Quit kicking me, Helen). - - - Jeff

The novelization was written a few years after the fact so I'm not sure if you can really count it. Most likely the writer was just
taking creative license as he did with many other aspects of the
story.
Anyway, they HAVE to be in love, because

Well, I have more new prereleases for tomorrow in the Photo section
Sideshow folder.
This set includes
Brent, Ursus, and Caesar
The Caesar looks like they just used Cornelius' head. I hope that
since this is just a prototype it cahnges. I know Roddy played both,
but they looked different.
Ursus looks more like Urko I think.
What do you all think??

and sculpt all together. Maybe I am blind, but the head for this
Caesar looks JUST LIKE my Cornelius.

The picture of the Brent figure isn't too hot... He doesn't look too much like Franciscus... All I can guess is that they could only make a generic "look a like" figure, and not his actual likeness... <.html

Maybe they are using "generic" names rather than having to pay any additional licensing fees? Or maybe "Negro" as he's called in the films credits isn't "politically correct" for them to use? (And maybe they don't know the name of Ongaro as he is also known?) <.html

|
.html I was watching "The Tyrant" episode last night and I got to
thinking...
the way the humans are treated (portrayed) in 3085 (T.V. Series
years), they are taxed or used as slaves by the apes. Yet, in
3955, about 900 years later, the humans have de-evolved (is that
a word?) into animals, so to speak.
Is this seen as a continued result of the plaque (that killed dogs
and cats in 1983)? I've heard that possibly the radiation from the
nuclear war of the late 1990's may be a factor. Although, if this
was so, then why do some humans mutate while others
de-evolve (there's that word again)?

Interesting, the only thing is that it's not in the script. Nor do
the actors seem to play it that way. Of course I could be missing or
forgeting something from the film that would indicate otherwise. If
so, please point it out.

Except with Battle there are two cuts of the film. One with the bomb
and one without. The cut with the bomb doesn't contradict or change
anything in the cut without the bomb. It just fleshes out the
existing film a bit. The same can be said of final shooting scripts
for any of the films.
However, the novelizations are a different story. None were written
by Paul Dehn or other members of the production crew. I don't know
enough about Beneath's novelization to comment. But at least with
Battle's we know David Gerrod was on the set and wrote his novel
somewhat in concert with the production.
The novelizations of Escape & Conquest are a different story. Both
were written in 1974, long after the films were completed. In the
case of Escape, the writer took many creative liberties with the
story resulting in very different versions of certain events. (i.e.
In the film the spaceship is towed to the beach vs. in the novel it
is brought aboard an aircraft carrier.) Thus, which version is
canon? I'd have to say the film and not the novel. <.html

definitively saying whether it was part of the movie continuity or
not as well as placing the action on the west coast & 900 years
earlier. It gives one the flexibility to fit it together as one sees
fit.
You can either say they are different POTA universes so man's
devolution took place differently. Or that it took place at
different rates on the East and West coasts. Or that by the TV
series is the mid-point of a devolution process that has reached the
end 900 years later.
There really is no right or wrong answer for this.

.htmlOK Let me try my hand at this.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to compliment Sideshow Toys on the wonderful job they
have been doing with the 12" Planet of the Apes figures. Classic
POTA fans have been waiting decades for these. Thank you.
It is my hope that once Sideshow has produced figures from the POTA
movie series that you will also produce figures based on the TV
series characters, specifically:
Galen - the chimpanzee character played by Roddy McDowall. His make-
up and costume were different than the characters of Cornelius &
Caesar McDowall played in the films.
Virdon & Burke - The human astronauts in both their astronaut
uniforms and fugitive clothing.
Chief of Security Urko - The gorilla chasing the fugitives. His
costume was different from that of General Ursus.
Councillor Zaius - The Orangutan elder. Different from Dr. Zaius in
the films. He also had different make-up and costumes.
While there are many fans of the POTA films, there are also many
fans of the TV series worldwide who's first exposure to POTA was
through the TV series.
I would hope that Sideshow will honor these fans with figures I
detailed above. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Feel free to suggest changes everyone.

The art used in the calendar is not from a movie poster but from

I guess I have to open up the timeline can of worms again...
OK, first off many don't consider the TV show in the same universe as the movies, but let's pretend that it is. If so, then the TV is "down the timeline," so to speak from ESCAPE, CONQUEST and BATTLE. The TV show is definitely not part of the timeline, which I call "the original timeline," that lead to the events of PLANET and BENEATH, the "pre-history" of which is told by Cornelius in ESCAPE.
Is that clear?

.html I am going to assume that the images that are on theSideshow website
are going to be the final versions since Sideshow's early images of
the 1st series turned out to be accurate to how they were produced.
If that is the case, then there are a couple of things that don't
look too good.
Mainly, that they are going to re-use the Cornelius headsculpt on
Caeser. I mean, it's one thing when Mego puts out Cornelius and Galen
and use the same figure. That was 30 years ago and things were
different (and cheaper). These days, that kind of thing just doesn't
cut it. That was the great thing about the Medicom figures - they
took the time to make each Roddy McDowell chimp look accurate to
wichever film and whichever character he was playing.
I'm sure other ape fans out there, like me, get annoyed when
manufacturers of POTA products can't it right and think that "all
apes look alike". Grrrrrrrr.
Anyway, aside from the re-used headsculpt, they are re-using
Cornelius's shoes, when in fact, in Conquest, the apes wore those
comfortable looking tennis shoes. Now, granted, that didn't make much
sense, I mean, were did they stick that big toe on the side of their
feet? Still, for the money, they should be ACCURATE.
Ursus looks pretty good. His head looks to be a little too lightly
colored. Almost a brown instead of a black. That can be pretty easily
repainted. The sides of his helmet look very thin. It seems that
instead of one molded piece of plastic or rubber like the Hasbro
Ursus, they are using a molded piece for the top and vinyl for the
sides. It's hard to tell from the picture how well this will work. It
will allow for more flexibility in moving the head at least.
So far, Ursus is the only one that I will definately get.

The thing is, the sub-machine gun really "isn't" Ursus' accessory... He is shown with the pistol, and while riding, he has a standard rifle in his rifle case on the saddle... It's not until the end of BENEATH when he grabs the machine gun from the soldier that he is even seen with one... Ursus with a sub-machine gun makes about as much sense as the Medicom Urko being accessorised with one... <.html

On the Sideshow web site you can log on to a chat and talk with a
fellow who works for Sideshow named Chris. I told him the same thing
you just said. I asked him why they used the Cornelius head over
again? I told him that indeed Roddy played both Cornelius and Caesar
but they look different. You know what he said? "That isn't the
Cornelius head. You better look at it again; that is a total new
head sculpt. Well, I did look at it again and even closer with the
new pics posted on another site and I still say that that head they
used for Caesar is the same head for Cornelius!!! I hope that the
head changes between the prototype and the actual figure.
I encourage all of us in the group to flood Sideshows email with
emails wanting a realistic Caesar head. And for the record, Ursus
looks more like Urko from the TV series to me.

I think the name Ongaro was just added later to the vhs credits, and

I would have thought that the older chimps would have been neutered to prevent this. I thought the problem was that there is an overpopulation of chimps in captivity.

.htmlYes, as with Rittenhouse this is not being handled right. They are
obviously throwing in cheap accessories to make fans pay for a repeat figure
of the same character or to increase the price of a character. Reusing faces
and parts, etc. I understand that has to be done to save money (using the
same shoes, etc.) but it's so blatant, like the small, expensive Rittenhouse
card sets. Maybe companies think POTA fans are born with the mark of the
"sucker" because Burton's POTA2001 did pretty well considering it's quality.
But these companies who complain about poor sales should look within and ask
if they are really up to bat. What happened to the Sideshow quality of
Universal Monsters? I think they need to focus on fewer figures and make
those figures stand out. Ursus is good, but we don't need 4 Taylors, a
Caesar that looks like Cornelius (if they do Caesar, do it right or don't do
it), etc. Without quality and value, sales suffer and POTA gets the rap. The
collectibles market is too competitive today. - - - Jeff

<<but we don't need 4 Taylors>>
I'm guessing that the reason they're making so many variants of Taylor is because the
licensing cost for Heston's likeness was probably quite high as is the cost to sculpt
the figure's head. It is cost effective for them to by churn out variations of the same
character. I don't have a problem with it. If they only made a slave Taylor, then we
would be complaining that we weren't getting an astronaut (or vice versa). I think the
"Beneath" version is an interesting variant and will display well with Ongaro and Slave
Brent (I'm sure that variant is coming).
<<Caesar that looks like Cornelius (if they do Caesar, do it right or don't do it),

Yeah, this kind of bugs me, but I'll hold off on the criticism until the final product
arrives. It could have been some prototype they just threw together for the Toy Fair.
<<Without quality and value, sales suffer and POTA gets the rap.>>
True, but the line has only been in existance for less than a year. It was announced at
last Toy Fair and the first figures didn't start showing up until a few months ago. I
think their offerings have been impressive so far. Sure, there area few things I would
have done differently, but isn't that always the case? Look what they've done with
some of their other licenses (Bond, Monsters, etc). Those are some impressive
lineups. If the sales are there, I'm sure the Apes will be equally as impressive when all
is said and done.
I look forward to Sideshow's POTA line for years to come.

.html Hey all
The Sideshow page has a Toy Fair link. When you click it you will
find a chat area. In the chat area is a guy name Chris who works for
sideshow. I talked to him again last night about them using
Cornelius head on Caesar. He said that so far, I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO
HAS SAID ANY THING ABOUT THIS. He said if more people thought it was
Cornelius' head, they need to contact him and let him know so he can
approach the powers that be at Sideshow to be able to let us know if
this is a mistake or the actual head that will be used. If not, we
will proably end up with Cornelius in a green jump suit. So, my
fellow ape fans, contact Chris along with me and let him know that
the Caesar head is indeed Cornelius so we can get it changed. If you
refuse to contact him, don't cry about getting a Cornelius Caesar. <.html

I was just guessing. I thought in the original movie he was
identified as "negro" in the film credits, anyway that's what he is
called in the original Dehn script. So the name Ongaro came later.
Anyway it seems very similar semantically to "negro" so I just
assumed it was a re-write to mask the obvious racial insensitivity.
Just imagine if Ongaro was the only one with an actual name and
everyone else was named "white guy 1", "white guy 2" , "white girl"
and so on. I'm sure the reverse must have dawned on someone, hence
the name change. <.html
