I see it as short for "answer", as in
they are trying to find an answer to the cosmic question. But probably the
filmmakers were squeamish about using NASA and just used a pleasing combination
that people wouldn't notice right away. Basically they just switched the first
two letters. - - - Jeff

.htmlThanks Goob. I just want to pinch your cheek. The one on your face, dummy.
Kass . These are terrific. Thanks to Kass and the guys. I wondered what was on the Viewmasters. Kind of a disappointment it's the first ep. Thought it would be an original story like the trading cards. But good to know. As for the contact sheets, I asked Bill Blake about the "mystery people" but he didn't recognize them. But Bill took the picture of the gorilla (Lee Delano) in front of the farmhouse (the one where it looks like he's going to wrestle). That's from the scene Bill and Lee did in "The Interrogation" that was cut. Just the two of them. Bill plays the chimp whose wagon Virdon and Galen stole, and Lee asks him about it.
A while back, Bill looked at the "Interrogation" script on Hunter's site, an early one. It didn't have Bill's scene but Bill did have a script with the scene in it when they shot. Unfortunately, he no longer has it. It'd be great if someone can turn up the script with Bill's scene, probably the shooting script. Anyway, thanks for the
continuing great work everybody. - - - Jeff .

.html Whatever they stand for, they had some pretty cool looking outfits.
Very snazzy.
I was just re-watching the first episode of the TV show and I noticed
how faded the ANSA patches and American flag patches are on Virdon
and Burke's costumes.
I can only assume that they are wearing the same costumes from the
first two movies that have faded in the interving years. You can
never clearly see their nametags.
I find it kind of interesting to see how many props they ended up re-
using in the TV show.
I recognized the spiked bars and spiked club from Beneath in the
first episode, as well as the rock partition from the ape church in
Planet.
I think that the arena from the "Gladiators" is the same ampitheatre
from Planet and Beneath.
The spaceship in the first episode, goes without saying.
I'm sure there's more that I've forgotten.

My question is, is there a cover art I can print off for my clamshell

.htmland they look even better when printed out.
btw, although the dvd quality is excellent, i was really struck with how bad the "animation" was.
much of it was simply a picture that a camera moved across.
and then there was a variation where there is a picture and a characters mouth and arm will move.
and sometimes a still picture was moved across a landscape.
i found it strange.
but i enjoyed it.

Me, too. Absolutely incredible! I had a set of VHS episodes but most were
missing the opening credits and were almost unwatchable! Watching the farmer

I always enjoy seeing references to PotA in other mediums and recently
can across 2 more in my recent readings:
The first was in Philip K. Dick's "A scanner darkly". In this future
story set in a narcotic influenced society, one of the characters says
she wants to go to a drive-in to see a marathon of the "Planet of the
Apes" movie series.... all 11 of them! She also goes on to say how she
enjoys how the later movies recount how famous people in our past
history were actually apes, including Lincoln and Nero. (The thought
did cross my mind that the Lincoln reference may actually have been the
inspiration for the cheesy 2001 Burton finale).
FYI: "A scanner darkly" was written in 1977. (It's also currently being
filmed starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder,
but whether the above dialogue gets retained for the screenplay remains
to be seen).
The other reference I found was in book "Godzilla on my mind" (2004,
William Tsutsui). PotA is refered to as one of the first enduring SF
movies series after of course the Godzilla series itself. There are a
few other comparisions made.
Just a few PotA tidbits for a friday......
PS: Happy belated birthday Neil!

discuss a local "retard" who got caught with a MEGO Planet of the
Apes doll up his ass. "Kid had Dr. Zaius half way up his butt and had
to go to the hospital to get it out." Also, one of the victims is
named Jerry Goldsmith as a tribute to the composer who did the score
for Planet of the Apes, The Omen, and countless other classics. He

El Superbeasto tells Otto, "That all you got, Monkey Man? I'm gonna
hit you so hard Dr. Zaius will crap in his drawers. Come and get it,

I don't see nothing wrong with honoring Kim Hunter and Zira. Besides, I
have one in my room along with a 18x 24 oil painting of the good Doctor Zira I

Sometimes a lot can change from the prototypes that are usually
displayed on their website. You really need to see each figure in
person to get an accurate assesment of how it is.
I anticipate really liking Ursus, but a lot can go wrong between now
and it's release.
Maybe the poll should be in 2 parts?
"Best Sideshow figure in first assortment?" or "so far?" and then
another poll after the 2nd assortment is released.

| Subject: Finding Milo Project |
|
.html First, I'd like to thank Greg P. and James and Tim for their
interest in the Finding Milo Project. It was very helpful to find
the name of our chimp, and having pictures and video has been quite
revealing! I'm actually a bit brain dead right now, so any new
ideas would be really appreciated.
Wally Swett, Sarah Baeckler, Marc Beckoff, Robin Dickson and
countless others have kept me focused and offered assistance with
their human resources, and I'd like to acknowledge that any
information that I do have is compiled from bits taken from all of
these sources and more.
Without a huge amount of confirmation, I'd like to share what I have
right now and the direction that my search is going.
It is believed that Kelly was privately owned and "furnished" to the
set by Roy Kabat. There is information in Joe Russo's book "Planet
of the Apes Revisited" that she came from Europe. Kim talks in the
book about her cagemate who died of Hepatitis on the way. It was
believed that our chimp was 6 months old at the time of filming,
having arrived from Europe not long before that.
Wally Swett from Primarily Primates was approached at one point by
her owner to take her, but he didn't have room at his sanctuary. He
referred the ower to Genus pan. It is likely that she went there.
In any case, Wally believes that she went from there to the track
that most chimps used in entertainment go, and that she became a
research chimp. There is a chimp recorded at The ChimpanZoo
database that seems to support this "history".
The database has information on a female chimpanzee named Kelley
that roughly follows the life course Mr. Swett described. Kelley,
stud # 0248 first shows up in the records in 1968; there is no
information on her mother or father. It is believed that Kelley was
sent to the Houston Zoo in 1969 and then transferred to the Detroit
Zoo on February 25, 1972. Kelley then spent a number of years
in research institutions: Lemsep (2/3/76), Southwest (9/10/79) and
finally Bastrop (6/9/81). Kelley would be about 37 now.
We were thrown by the age descrepency, as the chimp in the movie
would have to have been about two years older than has been
recorded. The pictures that we were able to send to Sarah Baeckler
confirm that the chimp in the movie was actually 18 months to 2
years old -- meaning that the chimp didn't arrive from Europe at 6
months old, as Kim's comments would have suggested. That would put
Kelley's age much closer to the age of the Bastrop chimp.
I have finally made a contact at Bastrop and I should be receiving
more information this week.
The bad news is that many chimps at Bastrop were used for AIDS
research. Although chimps proved to be poor models, those that were
infected with the virus have been kept in isolation since their
exposure years ago. If she was used as for this purpose, she would
never be given an opportunity for retirement, as she couldn't be
socialized with other chimps and would always need to be kept alone.
The good news is this... I have been referred to a doctor in charge
of psycho/social research. That is a really good sign because if
Kelley is being used in this way, it is probable that she has not
been used in AIDS research.
I don't really have any answers and until things can be all tied up
in a nice little bow, there are still a lot of gaps. I do know that
in 2002 a list was compiled of chimps at Bastrop and Kelley's name
was on the list. In 2005 that list was revised (unofficially) and
her name was not deleted.
I'm waiting further information -- hopefully this week -- and hope
to make contact with a couple ape trainers. Wish me luck.
Helen
At the risk of annoying some on the list... I'm thinking that it's
good to pray for God's animals, too, so if you are a praying person,
I think it would be good if you'd pray for Kelley. Thanks. <.html

Well, in a way it did... The last episode of season one "was" a wrap-up episode done in an open ended way.. It had a conclusion had they not been renewed for a second year, or "open ended" so they could carry on if renewed... <.html

.html .html.htmlFrom an interview with Kim Hunter in "Filmfax" magazine, No. 79, June 2000:
Question: In the third one, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, you had a baby chimp. Was it difficult working with her?
Hunter: No, she was a darling, absolutely adorable, just wonderful to work with. They had someone in my costume, etc., work with the chimp before I met her. They gave me a cover-up thing under my costume, like cops wear in order to avoid bullets, so if the chimp wanted to bite me on the chest, she couldn't. At one point, the substitute for me, in trying out working with the chimp, did get bitten; not seriously, fortunately. But I never had a problem with the baby chimp. Once in a while, she could be like any little brat, off-screen. But, on-screen, once the camera was rolling, the chimp was paying attention to the scene. It was incredible; a natural born actor, truly.
One problem, she was scared to death of elephants. And we had one elephant in the circus scene. When see saw the elephant for the first time, she nearly squeezed my neck putting her arms around me, handing onto me, just scared to death. After that, the director, Don Taylor, made sure the elephant was not where the chimp could see it when she was on-camera.
We did have another problem when I was on the ship, carrying the baby chimp and looking for Cornelius. There are barriers between areas of a ship. I stepped over that fine, but on the other side, the crew had left a bunch of lighting wires. I tripped on the wires and fell face down. I held the chimp up because I didn't want her to get hurt. I got bruised, considerably. The chimp didn't get bruised at all, but got scared. The trainer came over immediately, to take the chimp away. I said, "No, no! I'm the one who has to calm her down. I'm the mom, here." So I finally did calm her down.
The next time, they got the wires out of the way so I didn't have a problem. Then, we were doing other running around bits in the interior of the ship. And I was ducking under things, trying to get through. I lost my balance, at one point, but I caught myself and didn't fall this time. The chimp looked up at me as if to say, "Oh boy! What have I got there?" It was the funniest look I've ever seen in my life.

Kelley did play both parts. Her cagemate died coming over from
Europe, so she got both parts (according to Joe Russo's book).
As far as the name goes, I figure if someone is checking their
records, they are probably using computers. Greg P. found her name
in the 35th Anniversary DVD -- but of course it isn't spelled out.
I started by spelling it K-E-L-L-Y, but found in the GAP Census
records that there were two K-E-L-L-E-Y's. I figured to get the
best result I'd better be sure that everyone knows we don't have a
specific spelling in case they enter one and the computer doesn't
bring up the other. It looks as if we are looking for a "Kelley,"
but I don't want to miss something. (Spellings are often misleading
in historical documents -- as with the names of Rev War Soldiers.
Often the recorder puts the spelling down whatever way they want to
spell it.)
I received an email from a woman who knew the Census Pan chimps and
she says she doesn't believe there was ever a Kelley. BUT, and I
think this is amazing, at the same time she got my letter she found
an old file from the Primate Institute of Oklahoma. It listed a
Kelley!!!! She says those chimps went to LEMSIP and from there we
could be talking about the same chimp!!! However, in her
recollection most of the LEMSIP chimps went to sanctuaries in US and
Canada.
She isn't too concerned about even seemingly large age
discrepencies. It's impossible to age a chimp due to the fact that
so few records travel with them!

Here's a different version of the same story from Kim's book . .
.
JUST CALL ME "MUM"
With two children of my own, and a long
parade of theatrical
children of all sexes, ages, shapes, and sizes . . .
Motherhood has
become a familiar role. But I hardly dreamed I'd ever be playing
Mother to a chimpanzee. A real live chimpanzee ... in "Escape
from the Planet of the Apes." No John Chambers creation, this
baby.
In the story, Milo was a newborn
infant. In life he was six
months old, just off the boat from the wilds of Africa . . . with
very
large teeth he was well-prepared to
use. A "stand-in" Dr. Zira, complete in my makeup and
costume,
spent days with the chimp and his trainer, Jerry Campanilli, to get
the babe used to the smells and strange look of "evolved" apedom.
Their first contact was not too satisfactory. Milo bit her. In a
very
vulnerable area. The wardrobe department nastily constructed a
large
plastic breastplate to wear under the costume for future
protection.
Jerry also draped Milo in Pampers to eliminate possible mishaps
from
the other end. And finally we were
introduced. Our first meeting was fraught with
trepidation. It took about an
hour (and a great deal of sweet-talk) to get him to leave Jerry's
arms
for mine without his baring great menacing teeth. That step
accomplished, we were on our own. Flung into our first scene
together. No time for palsy-walsies on Company
time. In the shot, I was to carry Milo in my arms and
run frantically
through a derelict ship (moored in San Pedro Harbour) searching for
Cornelius. "Action!" I dutifully ran,
promptly tripped over a mess of lighting cables,
and went sprawling onto the deck. A sixth sense told me this was no
way to begin a meaningful relationship with my "child." Instead of
trying to brace my fall, my arms automatically went up to keep Milo
from hitting the deck, too ... a saving gesture he didn't
immediately
appreciate. I not only got a close and ominous view of every tooth
in
his mouth, he voiced his displeasure and terror in unmistakably
rude
tones. Jerry dashed to the rescue, quite
sure he was going to tear me to
shreds. And with a bravado born of ignorance, I pushed her aside. I
didn't know much about chimpanzees, but I knew if we didn't make
friends again fast, we were in deep trouble. I hung on and played
comforting "Mum" for dear life until his lips finally relaxed and
those lethal ivories retreated. Then I gave Milo to
Jerry. It took me a great deal longer to stop
shaking. And I discovered
all sorts of interesting bruises . . . later. But as soon as I
could
stand
without my knees buckling under, we had another go at the scene
(the offending cables cleared away) and all went well, thank God.
"Print!" We had one more tense moment
the same day. Again, a
complicated running sequence through the ship, under huge, low
pipes and over jagged, rusty debris . . . and, though cables
weren't in
the way, my sense of balance in that hobble skirt was sorely tried.
I
tripped again, this time over my out-sized ape feet, but caught
myself
in the nick and didn't sprawl. Milo was jolted considerably, gave
me a
startled look, and then relaxed. He didn't even bare one tooth.
Trust,
and the beginning of our love affair was underway. I was obviously
some sort of nut come into his life, but
harmless. Except for the latent threat of those
teeth, he was just like any
human baby . . . affectionate, curious, playful. He'd .get testy
when
overly tired or bored. Or fly into a tantrum when denied something
he desperately wanted. But generally he was amenable and charming.
And a natural-born actor. However bored he might be off-camera, he
was immediately alert and "into it" when the camera was rolling.
Only once did he hold up the
shooting. There was a sequence with a lot of circus
animals . . . big cats,
bears, smaller cats, and a baby elephant. Everyone was caged except
the elephant. And Milo was terrified of the elephant. Every time it
crossed his vision he'd cry out in panic, frantically free his arms
from
his blanket and cling to my neck for dear life. Don Taylor, our
director, finally had to settle for positioning the elephant so
Milo
couldn't possibly see it, even if it meant the camera couldn't
either. The making of that third (and for me, last) Ape film was
fascinating, but in one respect, very disconcerting. And for
insight
into human behavior, quite as enlightening as the first, for a
slightly
different reason. In the first two of the series, the apes were
in the majority. We
may have seemed strange to the outside world, but we were familiar
and friendly beings among each other. In
the third . . . except for the brief opening sequences when Sal
Mineo was with us ... Roddy McDowall and I were the only simians.
All the rest of the cast was human. We were unmistakably the
outsiders . . . the odd couple. Oh, we
were treated politely and gently, and there was much of
the easy banter and humor that permeates a happy company, and
ours was that, but the strain people feel in trying consciously to
communicate "unselfconsciously" with the peculiar was always
present. We were "different''' . . . and vaguely repulsive to human
sensibilities. John Randolph (Chairman
of the President's Commission in the
film) finally verbalized it. Johnny and I have been friends for 20
years and I had to know if I was being paranoid. He tried to
explain,
the uneasy look in his eyes belying his jolly laughter: "Kim, I
know
in my mind that behind all that foam rubber it's you, but
the
makeup is so damn realistic I feel as if I'm talking to a creature
from
outer space. It's downright uncomfortable . . . and
dammit,
disturbing."

First, I'd like to thank Greg P. and James and Tim for their interest in the Finding Milo Project. It was very helpful to find the name of our chimp, and having pictures and video has been quite revealing! I'm actually a bit brain dead right now, so any new ideas would be really appreciated.
Wally Swett, Sarah Baeckler, Marc Beckoff, Robin Dickson and countless others have kept me focused and offered assistance with their human resources, and I'd like to acknowledge that any information that I do have is compiled from bits taken from all of these sources and more.
Without a huge amount of confirmation, I'd like to share what I have right now and the direction that my search is going.
It is believed that Kelly was privately owned and "furnished" to the set by Roy Kabat. There is information in
Joe Russo's book "Planet of the Apes Revisited" that she came from Europe. Kim talks in the book about her cagemate who died of Hepatitis on the way. It was believed that our chimp was 6 months old at the time of filming, having arrived from Europe not long before that.
Wally Swett from Primarily Primates was approached at one point by her owner to take her, but he didn't have room at his sanctuary. He referred the ower to Genus pan. It is likely that she went there. In any case, Wally believes that she went from there to the track that most chimps used in entertainment go, and that she became a research chimp. There is a chimp recorded at The ChimpanZoo database that seems to support this "history".
The database has information on a female chimpanzee named Kelley that roughly follows the life course Mr. Swett described. Kelley,
stud # 0248 first shows up in
the records in 1968; there is no information on her mother or father. It is believed that Kelley was sent to the Houston Zoo in 1969 and then transferred to the Detroit Zoo on February 25, 1972. Kelley then spent a number of years in research institutions: Lemsep (2/3/76), Southwest (9/10/79) and finally Bastrop (6/9/81). Kelley would be about 37 now.
We were thrown by the age descrepency, as the chimp in the movie would have to have been about two years older than has been recorded. The pictures that we were able to send to Sarah Baeckler confirm that the chimp in the movie was actually 18 months to 2 years old -- meaning that the chimp didn't arrive from Europe at 6 months old, as Kim's comments would have suggested. That would put Kelley's age much closer to the age of the Bastrop chimp.
I have finally made a contact at Bastrop and I should be receiving more information this
week.
The bad news is that many chimps at Bastrop were used for AIDS research. Although chimps proved to be poor models, those that were infected with the virus have been kept in isolation since their exposure years ago. If she was used as for this purpose, she would never be given an opportunity for retirement, as she couldn't be socialized with other chimps and would always need to be kept alone.
The good news is this... I have been referred to a doctor in charge of psycho/social research. That is a really good sign because if Kelley is being used in this way, it is probable that she has not been used in AIDS research.
I don't really have any answers and until things can be all tied up in a nice little bow, there are still a lot of gaps. I do know that in 2002 a list was compiled of chimps at Bastrop and Kelley's name was on the list. In 2005 that list was revised
(unofficially) and her name was not deleted.
I'm waiting further information -- hopefully this week -- and hope to make contact with a couple ape trainers. Wish me luck.
Helen
At the risk of annoying some on the list... I'm thinking that it's good to pray for God's animals, too, so if you are a praying person, I think it would be good if you'd pray for Kelley. Thanks.

Thanks.
It's not a common book but not rare either.
Alibris has half a dozen copies listed, from
just under $20 to over $50, depending on
the seller and the condition of the book. <.html

That's funny, I meant to ask you guys today if that was him doing the
Cialis commercial, because I knew it was -- had to be. I guess I'm so
used to hearing him doing the Prilosec commercial it didn't really register
until today. I'm glad someone else mentioned it, or I would have forgotten

.html
.html
With the 3rd season of "Land of the Lost"
(where Ron Harper replaced the father in the series) coming out on DVD in a
couple months or so, here's some quotes from Ron about the show. It's from the
book "Fighting Apes in the Kitchen" by Ron Harper. No, it's from the book
"Pufnstuf and Other stuff" by David Martindale (1998):
Ron: "Believe it or not, people still come
up to me and tell me how much they loved that show. I am constantly amazed at
how many people will recognize me from "Land of the Lost" and remember the show.
And they say, 'I was only 5 at the time, but I can remember it very
well'.
"And I think it was primarily because the
stories were so good.I had just finished doing POTA, the nighttime series, which
you would expect to be betterwritten than a children's show on Saturday
mornings. But I thought the stories on LOTL were much more interesting. We
reworked so many old legends, the Flying Dutchman, the Medusa. I remember
our producer, he said that was the most fun that he had, writing stories that
experimented with ancient myths and fables. It
was ambitious.
"I have an eight - year-old daughter and she
has seen them all. It's her favorite show. And I don't think it has anything to
do with my being in them. It's because it's a good show".
Ron: "I was crossing hand over hand on a
rope from some gorge. I remember they had a rope strung up with the blue screen
behind me. And I had a bad back from when I was doing POTA, from a mechanical
bucking horse that they had strapped me into ("The Horse Race"). So I was to do
hand over hand on this rope, but I had a hell of a time doing it, mainly because
my back was so sore. And I remember it was so difficult and finally they put
some boxes under me".
Ron: "You will probably recall seeing the
father in that episode (the first episode of the third season), even though the
actor didn't appear in the third year. I believe they wanted him to come back
and do one episode where he disappeared. But actually it was our producer with a
black wig on. You only saw him from the back. Our producer put on a black wig
and a khaki shirt and he went into the pylon. That was him".

I'd say, no, he's not aware.
I'm working from memory here but at one point doesn't someone
say something like "Do you know the range of thier city, then set
the coordinates"?" Pretty irrelevant given the bombs power. And
when Taylor clues Brent in on the device he (Brent) says
something like "My God, those bloody fools, they don't know what
they've got."
What a man, that Brent eh... I bet he never needed Cialis!
