Baker said it worked out, though, and Thade is one of his favorite makeups. Maybe I should remention that a while back "Makeup Artist" magazine did a poll of it's readers for the best movie makeups of all time. "Frankenstein" was # 1, the original POTA was # 2, and...POTA2001 was in the top 10. And this ain't "Entertainment Weekly". So Baker's makeup is well regarded. - - - Jeff

To preserve them.
Film stock degrades over time,
especially if not stored in a cool
dry place.  However, even when stored
properly it will still deteriorate.  If they're
going to preserve them, the sooner the
better.  But film preservation is expensive.
Many films have already been lost because
they were not considered good enough to
bother to save them. Sometimes a print will
turn up that in good enough shape to run
through the machine once or twice before
it turns to dust.  But unless it's considered
a classic, or has historic value, the studio
won't bother saving it if they can't make
their money back on it. That's Show Biz.

The chronology I did assumes two timelines (one with the TV show and the first two movies, and the second with the last 3 movies and the cartoon show; plus the comics where applicable, the idea was to include everything). Because the cartoon series was so different it made sense (to me) to use it to show what happened to ape society in Caesar's timeline. Yeah, it's a bummer apes and humans don't get along (hinted at at the end of "Battle", the pulling of the ponytail) but the world got past 3955 and the world wasn't destroyed, so Caesar succeeded to a degree. An excellent review of Return! I agree with many of your points, though I do enjoy the
series nonetheless. One
minor correction, though -- "The time line is smashed here as well, since the three astros
landed on earth 2 years
(3978) after Taylor has blown it up!" Putting the 3955 error aside, this series doesn't take
place after Taylor blows
up the Earth. The first film takes place in 3978, and many fans place the second film in
3979 to allow for enough
time to pass to have the trial, the marriage and other events that must pass between films.
So although the cartoon
is a continuity nightmare on other levels, the year is okay. The bigger issue is that it just
doesn't fit what we see in
the films for that era.

I also agree. Not to sound like a violent psycho, I'd love to see the more violent version of Conquest. Based on what I saw in the old Marvel Comic (which I wish they'd reprint verbatim) as well as the Apes Archives Volume 1 (was there ever a volume 2) the Ape rebellion must have been something to see. I'd like to know how the Chimpanzees lost their power base to the Orangs and Gorillas as well and how the Orangs finally took polictical control. I'd guess it started through their control of religion which seemed to be a big thing in Planet. Control Religion, control minds...

I thought Taylor landed in 3976! Oops. Perhaps Return took place in an alternate reality (like Entersuck) where the Apes weren't afraid of technology. I always felt that the reason they kept themselves primitive (pre-Cornelius and Zira going back through time to open that entire can of worms again) was that they had such bad memories of Man and his Tech that the Orangs (remember Zaius terror at the A/O Bomb) kept things down that way. Who knows if Zira and Cornelius and then Ceasar changed their opinon. Since we have to include the TV series, I'd guess not.
(Unless yet another time line is formed!)

Today is a bit of an anniversary for me. Thirty-three years ago today, I saw Battle for the first time. A few weeks earlier, I had seen the Battle poster up in the theater lobby under 'Coming Soon' and it looked so damn cool. I was there to see 'The Poseidon Adventure' (the first time I had seen Roddy without the makeup) and asked when Battle would be opening. They told me Friday, July 13th.

I spent the next few weeks counting the days until the film opened. A wait made easier by a trip to Disney World the week prior. (We got back on the 12th, which was my first time on an airplane.) I remember going bed the night before and trying to fall asleep as fast as possible so morning would come quickly. Sort of like on Christmas Eve.

The next morning I ran to get the newspaper to see the full page ad for the film and check the time of the first showing. At noon, my big brother took me to the theater and we found out there was a second feature playing with Battle, the original 'Planet of the Apes' (which I had only seen 1 time before when I was 6). WOW, two Apes for the price of one. I was in heaven.

Brian's book often appears on eBay - particularly the UK branch,
(although, sod's law, there's none on offer right now) and can be
picked up for a modest price. IMHO it's an essential purchase. It's
focus is on the original movie, not the whole franchise. Personally I
find it sits quite happilly, side by side with Joe's book (an equally
essential purchase).

I would add to that "The Planet of the Apes Chronicles" by Paul Woods.
It contains many interviews and articles that were written back in
the '70s while the films were being produced. Plus it has a kick ass
timeline.

  Happy anniversary, James.
On the 27th is the 10th anniversary of Bill Blake turning me into an authentic POTA chimp for an Eric Greene signing, a pretty cool memory (only drag, I couldn't eat the POTA cake). As it turned out, 5 years later to the day, POTA2001 came out. Plus it's Kassidy Rae's birthday. July 27th, a day that will live in infamy. - - - Jeff

I saw it the same way, with Planet (which was the first time I'd seen it) but it was earlier, in June just before I graduated from Junior High School. I saw it at the Beverly Theater in Brooklyn (long gone). Then the same day I graduated from Junior High a friend and I went to the Walker Theater to see all five at the GO APE festival and they showed them in this order:

Escape
Conquest
Battle
Planet

While I haunted the Beverly and the Walker, my favorite theater in Brooklyn was The Oriental. it was a grand old place that, even when it became a Triplex, was still huge inside. I only wish I'd seen some apes there.

I saw Planet, Escape and Battle at the Beverly.
I saw all Five (second run) at the Walker
I saw Conquest at the Sunrise drive-in! (Thanks Pop!) The second feature was The Hot Rock with Robert Redford!

And that pizzeria is still there almost exactly as it was in the '70s.

      Let's see.

I first saw PLANET at the old Fox Theater on SE Croix Street in the southern part of my hometown in early February 1968 (Topeka, Kansas).  It went out-of-business in 2003.
BENEATH was first seen July 1970 at the Grand Theater (now demolished.)
ESCAPE was seen the summer of 1971 (it may have been June or July) at the Dickinson downtown theater (also now demolished).
CONQUEST was seen late 1972 at the Jayhawk Theater (they were thinking of renovating the theater).
And BATTLE was seen at the "Ape-O-Rama" at the old "Gage 4" theaters July 4, 1973 (the building that housed the theaters was made into a cocktail lounge and bar in 2004).

Saw Planet at the Walker sometime in 1968. The second feature
was 'One Million B.C.' with Raquel Welch. A fur bikini double
      feature;-)

I saw both Beneath & Escape, seperately, at the Marboro. Now closed.
      Neither had a second feature.

Saw Conquest at the Kingsway. I think it's closed now too. No second
      feature either.

Went to the '73 & '74 'Go Ape' marathons at the Walker.

I remember the Oriental. Saw many films there after the Walker hit
the skids. I don't remember the Beverly though. Where was that?

And I audio recorded them, tapes I held onto for years!

I audio taped them too on those old pink "Ampex" tapes for 99 cents each. Even taped the TV Guide blurbs to the boxes.

Yeah the Oriental was a gorgeous old theatre. And a block or 2 away was the DeLuxe Theatre which during the day showed 'adult' movies and rock n roll classics at the midnight shows.

Some of the younger people here might not remember that theatres used to have ushers and that kids not accompanied by adults could only get into matinees and had to sit in a certain section.

This really used to piss me off as a kid because I was often just dropped off at the theatre by my mother.  I remember when I went to go see PLANET by myself once in 1969 that I wanted to sit right in the middle of the theatre to watch it, but the "kid's section" was on the right side facing the screen and so they made me sit over on the side.  Bastards!  I'll still pissed to this day!

I also remember that once I wasn't able to get into a theatre to see the John Wayne movie RIO LOBO because the "Kid's Usher" had called in sick!  Man, was I made, almost as much as I was when I got turned away from DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE because it was rated M!

I too first saw CONQUEST at a drive-in (in upstate NY), and THE HOT ROCK was shown on CBS the night before PLANET premiered in 1973.

I first saw BENEATH on June 13, 1970 at the now gone Loew's State 2 theatre in Manhattan.  Leaving that theatre and taking a city bus back down to the Staten Island Ferry was a strange feeling I'll never forget.  I actually believed I'd seen what would happen to NYC in the future.  Back in those days you really believed nuclear war would happen soon.

Not possible!  PLANET was only playing at two theatres in Manhattan in February 1968 (also possibly in LA too).  It didn't open nation wide until April 3, 1968.

I really wish you'd try to prove that you saw it in February '68, because I think you memory is faulty.  Is the Topeka, Kansas paper from that time on microfilm at your library?  If so, you should try looking up the ads for when PLANET opened in '68.

By the way, going to the library and looking at those old ads is a lot of fun.  I recommend it to everyone!

Isn't that the truth, Bruce!  The Grand and the Dickinson theaters in my city were those old-time movie houses that had a balcony...the thick, plush seats...and a HUGE screen...my idea of a real theater.  Where they once were are now parking lots.  The Fox theater was like the Gage 4...as I recall, it had several small theaters in the large building that housed it...and the Jayhawk is supposed to be on the list of national historic sites from what I'd been told.  Yes, we just have multiplexes now...the Hollywood Theaters on the west edge of town, that hold 10 mini-theaters, and the Westridge 8.  I'd been in both facilities in the last three years and, even though they're nice, they still can't hold a candle to the old-fashioned movie houses.  My three favorite movie palaces here in Topeka would have been the Jayhawk, the Grand and the Dickinson.

There's one classic theatre left in Brooklyn but its been closed for many years and a group is fighting to restore it before it falls apart completely. The Loew's Alpine, an 85-year old classic is still open and has been redesigned into a 7-theatre multiplex. The only thing that looks the same is the marquee.

OK That explains why I don't remember it. Church & McDonald was a bit
out of my range in those days.
I do remember the Benson which was 86th & 20th. That closed sometime in
the '80s. There was also a theater on 18th & McDonald where the Chase
Bank is now. I believe that closed in the early '70s but I can't
            remember its name.

The Alpine almost closed this year but was saved at the last minute.
            The Fortway closed last year.
Right now Brooklyn has the lowest number of theaters per capita in the
country. The problem: no parking. Most of old theaters were built in
the middle of shopping districts and there is no where to park close to
the theaters. That's why the Sheepshead Bay multi-plex has expanded
over the years while most other Brooklyn theaters have closed.

They should build the theatres on the tops of multistoried parking garages.  You get out of your car and take an elevator that opens directly into the lobby.

                Hi.

Well, Rory...I admit that you, along with other Apesters, were right regarding the world premiere of PLANET...and yes, my memory is faulty.

I went down to our Library yesterday and spent quite a bit of time researching the newspaper's archives on microfilm and discovered that the opening date here in Topeka was April 10, 1968.  But one thing that I do recall is that it was a very cool, overcast day, which probably got me to thinking that it was in February.  It was unusually cool for around here at that time of year.

But, once again, you and others were right...and I was wrong.  Pass the crow.  I'll take another helping.

.html.htmlThanks Zach for clearing that up, I just knew you couldn't have seen PLANET in February of 1968 -- unless you went to Manhattan!

I first saw PLANET on April 7, 1968 on Long Island, NY, and I remember it as being a sunny Sunday afternoon (I know I saw the movie at 1 PM because I looked up the theater's play times in the paper on mircofilm in the library back in the late seventies).  I can't remember if it was warm, but it couldn't have been too cool because I also remember going for Carvel afterward.

Anyway, we now all know that PLANET opened up for most everyone in the country in APEril of 1968.

I first saw the POTA movies on the TV. However, later on, I had the privilege to see all five films for a movie marathon at the Highland Movie Theatre in Albuquerque New Mexico. (Albuquerque is where Bug Bunny always makes that wrong turn ending up Looney Tune Land.)  The movie theatre at that time had the biggest screen in town. It's where Star Wars and it's sequels premiered and played. The marathon was great opportunity to see all five films on large silver screen. I was also delighted to see all those deleted scenes you all have been talking about.

Watching POTA from dust to dawn was a very interesting experience. When it was over, I, ready to take a good long nap, stepped outside the theatre and watched the sun rise. It indeed was a profound moment,  like a Space Odyssey moment.

The old movie theatre is on Route 66---Centeral Ave. A historical land mark, the theatre is now a musical theatre.

                Wendy

a big regret.I'd love the chance to sit through a marathon of all five--
that is pretty close to my idea of heaven. I wangled tickets to the
premiere in London for Burton's Apes, back in 2001(where do the years
go?) and you know how you hear at some premieres people applaud and
cheer? Everybody just quietly walked out from this one! The only
applause(apart from when Burton, Zanuck et al took the stage at the
start) was from the guy behind me who applauded Boulle's name in the
credits--and I joined in.Planet on a big screen must be wonderful.

I never saw the "Ape' movies in a theater until the 90's, then I made up for it. I saw the original in 1990 on a double bill with the remake of "The Fly". There were literally two other people in the theater. I've seen it in better circumstances later but you can't beat your first time.
Then in '96 when the Eric Greene signings started, Bill Blake screened it at one of the signings; I think it was 16 mm. Later that year I saw it in a theater with Eric on a double bill with "Beneath" (which had turned pink). The next year I saw it with Eric and some friends on a double bill with "Escape" (which was in decent shape). Before the screening they asked Eric to go up and introduce it, since his book had come out.
In '98 I got to go to the 30th anniversary party and see it again. A new print with the ad for "Behind the POTA" on it. I saw it at the Egyptian in 2000 with Charlton Heston the special guest. Same print with the "Behind" ad. And then I saw it again in 2004 at the Arclight with a Greene/ Abrahams/ Kartalian Q & A. They said this was a brand new print that they made after the 35th anniversary DVD. I gave a recap to the groups afterward, I think it was Feb. or March 2004. So that's, what, 6 times. But I haven't seen "Conquest" or "Battle" in a theater. No violins, please. - - - Jeff

Thought I'd wrap this up since this was a topic when we were debating whether the "Ape" cartoons would get a release.  www.tvshowsondvd.com
reports that the "Star Trek" cartoons from the '70's will be on DVD Nov. 21st. A while back when these were first announced some thought it would lead to the "Ape" cartoons getting an official release. Instead, "Apes" beat it to the punch. Well, kinda, since they're still only available in the "Ultimate Collection". "Trek" isn't a trick, all 22 eps are being released in a set. Nothing else to buy. Time to do the Vulcan Hustle. - - - Jeff

Wrong. Long Island is part of Brooklyn, which was settled by the Dutch first.

You know, being too young to get Apes first time around, I've always
kind of envied John's stories involving stealing pictures from
waiting rooms, having fights in front of nuns over TV series trading
cards, etc. but at last I can claim one small victory, as I have seen
the original PotA in the cinema (albeit not on a massive screen, but
                big enough).

It was Sunday the 31st October 1999, and was part of a season of cult
movies at the Filmhouse, Edinburgh. At 12:30 I saw Logan's Run,
followed by Apes at 15:00 and then rounded off at 17:15 with The
Omega Man. I went back later in the week to showings of The Warriors,
Shaft, Silent Running and Soylent Green as well. Yes, I do still have
the tickets in case you're wondering how I remembered all that.

                Magic.

The prints weren't in wonderful shape, but thankfully the PotA print
was in the best condition of all of them. Great stuff.

It's a shame that we're all so geographically far apart, because
actually it would be relatively easy (I believe) to hire out a cinema
and get hold of prints of all five movies.

Finally, does anyone know roughly when each of the PotA movies
premiered in the UK? I'd like to go back and try to dig out adverts
for them at my local cinemas of the time.

                Alan
