As a matter of fact, the images posted there were taken from the PDFs
on my site. Check out the bottom right corner of the front cover,
which is bent. If you extract the images, you get the exact same
150dpi images....

LT,
Sorry for the delay response.
Was that book Next of Kin? I've have visited Washoe and her troop by participating in the Chimposium. I even had the privilage of eating lunch with the chimps. They can really sign. Poor Loulis, he has such a fetish for shoes and packpacks. I miss Moja. She died few years ago from a twisted intestant.
To add to your trivia; The chimp's brain is fully developed when born, whereas a human baby's brain has some growing to do. Because the human brain is larger, the human infant soon surpasses the chimp's intellegence.
All of this has to with the brithing process, which (thanks to evolution) is very different between that of humans and apes. Fasinating stuff.

.html YOWZA! Awesome is the word for it! Every movie (unfortunately including
the Tim Burton Planet of the Travesty, but hey, I don't have to watch
it, eh? Just like Temple of Doom), the entire TV show and the entire
run of the Toon. Some very nice stuff here and I'm pretty dang happy
with it. In fact, I have only one problem, that perhaps someone on this
list can help with. Due to the size of my apartment, I really have no
room for the very nice Ceasar bust. If any apeophiles out there would
like it, give me a line off group and we can discuss it. I'm not
looking to rape anyone, just cover the cost of postage and handling.
It's a really beautiful item, I'd say the scale is like 1/2.
As for the set, I'm very happy with it. I like the packaging and the
films being letterboxed (does anyone watch Pan and Scan anymore unless
forced to?). I'm really looking forward to seeing the two eps of the
Series I never got to see (the finale and the blind ape girl) as well
as the entire toon (this kills the Ebay cottage industry where the toon
was getting sold!) which I really barely remember. <.html

.html OK, since the people on this site are like the Ape Council from Planet
(wise and full of knowledge), here's a question. For years I've heard
and read that Cesars speech at the end of Conquest was heavily edited.
OK, is there anywhere, perhaps even here or does anyone have an
original transcript of this speech? I'd like to compare it to the
speech in the film, which is one of my favorite scenes in the film.
It's just a great movie, really Fox should have pumped some more money
into it. Too bad they didn't release an uncut version of this like they
did with Battle (I'm still amazed that they did this and yet there is
no fanfare on the DVD box at all!).
I'll assume that many members have the awesome apes Archives card set
that came out a few years back. Was there ever a sequel set?

.htmlYou don't need an original transcript...it's not so much that it was edited, as there was a bit tacked on AFTER the speech, to make it sound less militant and revolutionary. It's basically all the stuff after the line "And that day is upon you NOW!" All the bits about laying down weapons and building peace were added later, and you'll notice you never see Roddy's mouth for any of that part, since he added it only as a voice over.

I often wish I could take a step back and enjoy each issue without the
'baggage' of having helped produce it but even so, I have to say this
has turned out to be a winner.
Up until publication I only ever get to see Scrolls in a very
fragmented state and it's only when a new issue slides through my
postbox that I get to see the big picture and that's the moment when
it all becomes worthwhile.
Individual copies are already on thier way to Non US subscribers and a
supply is bound for Kassidy Rae for distribution in America. An
announcement will be made just as soon as Kass is ready to start mailing.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped put this issue together and we
look forward to hearing your feedback. Issue 13 is already in
production so we'll be around for awhile yet.

Sorry 'bout the "damned"part...
Those are lost moments only to haunt us (or perhaps, our
grandchildren, in time).
I do believe "science" hides fact.
Did we really see "Oliver's" DNA?
Or only what "THEY" wanted "US" to see...?
Pierre Boulle had a vision as did H.G. Wells...
Who knows...
We F***ed this world up. It's time for a revolt...
What better fitting than our ancient cousin: the chimpanzee?
They think and they FEEL...
Cutting off, now...
I tend to ramble...

None taken... And you make a good point, it just shows that 'one man's
meat is another man's poison'. I get that he's supposed to be
something of a force of nature but I feel he's also supposed to be
intelligent, cunning and crafty and those aspects didn't come across
for me. Compared to the other apes in the movie he seemed too bestial,
like he only evolved the day before.

Thade was as ill-conceived as the entire film. I didn't agree with the entire approach of having the apes behave more like primitive primates than as civilized beings. It was anti-Boulle. The character really jumped the shark for me when he beat to death the two gorillas.
Oh! What a horrible movie!

I though he looked great and that he was the most
interesting character....I guess my only problem was
that Roth , who overall gave a fascinating
performance, did make him too
one-dimensional....ALWAYS mad....it would have been
interesting to see him maybe at the dinner scene to
relax and be himself, then perhaps get upset when Leo
comes in .....something to break up the
snarling....although seeing him shivering and scared
at the end was interesting..

That was Burton's idea, that the
progressives are becoming more human-like, and Thade's camp wants them to stay
ape-like. The most obvious contrast is between Thade and Ari. But otherwise the
idea got watered down, like everything else in the movie. - - -

it just shows that 'one man's meat is another man's poison'. I get that
he's supposed to be something of a force of nature but I feel he's also

If you've seen the out takes, the snarling Thade was actually
an improvement. I'm amazed they could even use Roth with
his enormous neb. Baker did an admirable job working around
his schnoz. But his character has only two speeds, angry and
psycho nuts. One of the flaws that riddle the film like

in the overall mess that was Burton's Apes.Thade was originally going
to be an albino gorilla(and still is in the junior novel of the
movie!) but I think Tim Roth made the point that, in reality, chimps
are the real bastards.Tim Roth is possibly my favourite actor ever(as
Archie in Rob Roy he's just astonishing) but I feel the make-up in
Apes just smothered his performance.Thade really evolves in the
junior novels, oddly enough, but probably only a handful of people
have ever seen those. The best bad guy by far is still Urko.John,

.htmlAnd uncalled for. Having had a few conversations with Joe several
years back, I can recall repeated complaints from him about how
disappointed he was with POTA fandom for not contributing to his
book. Remember that Joe? Or how you were upset with Don Murray
because he really didn't show that much of an interest when you told
him about the book? Yet when someone else makes a similar complaint,
they're supposedly spouting sour grapes? How exactly does that logic
work?
I doubt Heston was being "loyal" to you OR ANYONE ELSE he granted an
interview to over the years. He was doing so because of an
appreciation he had for the project. For the most part, actors are
more inclined to promote their current projects because that's
what's making them money.
Aside from the one published in Brazil, I own all the different
books that were written about POTA and all of them have had some
interesting things to offer. And you may complain about
Pendreigh "slapping a book together at the last minute to capitalize
on Apes 2001", but let's not forget that's the ONLY reason your book
(which according to a certain Starlog article was supposed to come
out circa 1986/87) was ultimately released.
You want to talk about "outstanding and honorable"? How about
letting people hear that audio recording you made of Ted Post (the
only surviving Apes director) watching BENEATH and commenting on it
instead of complaining about how the POTA rarities tape that's been
floating around fan circles for years is something that was "stolen"
from you and how people had "no right" to make copies. In case
you've forgotten, all that material is owned by 20th Century Fox.
You know- the same company that told you what you could and couldn't
put in the book. And just in case you try to claim that I'm simply
spouting sour grapes as well, let me add right now that I'm glad the
article I put together for the book (at your repeated request, by
the way) wasn't included. The reason you gave ("Fox told me I
couldn't include it.") was BS, because other books released at the
same time had similarly themed articles. Still it worked out for the
best, because I'd be embarrassed to be associated with you at this
point.

Even though it appears our script archive is now complete, with scripts for all five films and all 14 TV episodes as well as early versions of film scripts, unfilmed sequels and unproduced TV episodes, we still have more scripts to be added in the coming weeks. A first draft script of The Legacy is ready to be scanned, and a later version of Escape From Tomorrow than the one currently available is also waiting to be scanned.
Also available on Hunter's site today is issue 91 of the Marvel UK series. I believe that fans of the brains in the jars will particularly enjoy this week's installment. Letter column fans will also rejoice at the return of their favorite feature.

Film stock degrades over time,

One of the nice things about Fox releasing the Ultimate Apes DVD set is
that they included the 13 episodes of the cartoon. When I was younger, I was
much more fanatical about my devotion to things like Apes and Star Trek. But now
30 years later, thousands of hours of movies/toon/etc. under my belt, I can look
at this with a less jaundiced eye.
It's obvious that the Apes Toon was made simply to make some more money off
the Apes Franchise. Apes predates Star Trek in its mass marketing and the monies
Fox made off licensing everything to do with the series. Watching the toon now
it did have some good points, they were just overshadowed by the bad. It's clear
that some writers took a bit of care in their story telling, but a little bit of
attention to continuity (although who would have ever expected DVD and such to
bring such things back to the veiwing public?), a mistake started with Beneath
with the 3955 comment...
Anyhow the main problem with Apes is laziness or possibly cheapness.
Depatie-Freeling were a horrid animation department, right down there with
Filmation (who I'd rate a little higher than DF). Giving the apes technology was
just a lazy way out. Watch when the vehicles move. It's obvious that the
animation practice is of a kind not seen since Marvel did their early shows; you
know the one with Captain America and Iron Man, where images were just moved
across a static background. There is no consistency with the illustrations
either; the main humans look like they came from Jonny Quest (thanks to Doug
Widley being involved) and at other times all characters look grotesque. The
same backgrounds are used ala Hanna-Barbera, the kings of cheap animation, over
and over. The studios use of a Gemini style spacecraft for the astronauts is
just atrocious! And some of the later episodes, with giant monsters are just
laziness on the part of the scripters as well as underestimating the
intelligence of the veiwers.
The opening of the show, which lifts some scenes from Beneath is pretty
interesting as is the main title music. I could do without the guy saying
"RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES!" quite so dramatically, since it sounds
corny.
The names used are a mish-mosh from the films and the TV series; Urko,
Zaius (how many damn Zaius are there? Is that name like Smith is today?),
Cornelius, Zira and Nova. The color schemes are horrendous. An orange suited
Urko doesn't frighten anyone, although Zauis white suit reminds me of Picard's
in Star Trek: Insurrection. The time line is smashed here as well, since the
three astros landed on earth 2 years (3978) after Taylor has blown it up!
(Perhaps the AO only wiped out the east coast? I'm not even going to think about
this).
The underdwellers were a good idea gone haywire. Turning U-S-A into USA was
well done, but what's up with them? Are thier powers real or hypnotic? Some of
them shoot raybeams out of their eyes (the ricochets of which sound like
bullets) other times its illusion. They have a much higher technological base
than the Apes making mountains rise and fall for protection. If they have this
much tech, why do they need a prophecy to be filled to retake the earth? Likely
a writer thought it sounded cool.
Overall, I do like the toon. It takes a great many liberties, mixing in the
films, the TV show, the Boulle book - but it isn't dull. If DF had taken a
little time and thought, it could have been a really great toon rather than just
a sideshow of the franchise. Still, I do like it more than Burton's travesty of
a film! A few more voices would have helped...

series nonetheless. One
minor correction, though -- "The time line is smashed here as well, since the three astros

(3978) after Taylor has blown it up!" Putting the 3955 error aside, this series doesn't take
place after Taylor blows
up the Earth. The first film takes place in 3978, and many fans place the second film in
3979 to allow for enough
time to pass to have the trial, the marriage and other events that must pass between films.
So although the cartoon
is a continuity nightmare on other levels, the year is okay. The bigger issue is that it just
doesn't fit what we see in
the films for that era.

watched Escape when Hasselein was talking to the president and the
president said that NASA experts were going over the ship with
microscopic scrutiny, not ANSA. I don't think that the timeline was
smashed, I think that what Hasslein said during the television report
that apes jumped from their timeline to the timeliine that we saw on
Escape.

Thade was as ill-conceived as the entire film. I didn't agree with the entire approach of having the apes behave more like primitive primates than as civilized beings. It was anti-Boulle. The character really jumped the shark for me when he beat to death the two
gorillas.
