Just because someone doesn't respond to something right away doesn't they made something up. They could just be remembering incorrectly. Let's face it, the films came out over 35 years ago. Memories can become a bit muddled in that span of time.

I saw that...during the "Ape-A-Rama" that was shown at the old Gage 4 Theaters here in Topeka...that would have been early July 1973.  At that time all five films were shown, back to back.

I don't remember that, but I can swear that when I first saw PLANET it had an intermission and a small "The End" on the upper right of the final image, but although I've since read that the intermission thing did happen, the end title I think I just imagined.

Since we are talking about missing scenes, this isn't a missing scene but during the Go Ape! festival in the early '70s added to the end credits of Planet was something like "This is not the end. The story continues in Beneath the Planet of the Apes". I've never seen it before or since and think it must be something tacted on for a previous re-release, maybe the Planet/Beneath double feature.

Does anyone remember ever seeing this?

Someone here within the last year or so posted a link to some little article about when PLANET first came out.  In it it mentioned the movie having an intermission during its initial runs.  Sorry, but I don't recall what or where this article was, but I saw PLANET just a few days after it opened "wide" on April 3, 1968.  There was an intermission after the escape scene that ends with "Take your stinking paws...etc."  I saw the movie on April 7, 1968, a Sunday afternoon, at a small neighborhood theatre (775 seats) in Wantagh, New York.  Now, two months later I saw PLANET again, on a Saturday night, at another small neighborhood theatre, in Levittown, New York.  The intermission was gone by then, BUT that second showing is here I recall seeing a small "The End" on the upper right of the screen during the last shot.  Anyway, it's all lost to time now.  Just memories.

*** I'm not saying it did or didn't happen, but where was it confirmed that PLANET had an intermission during the original release?

Also, was this intermission in all theaters, or was it just in major cities? And was the intermission included throughout the entire original 1968 run, or was it just during the very beginning of the release and dropped after a few weeks? ***

I would have had them do blue appliances that were removable

takes.  Then they could digitally airbrush out the edges an
airbrush in the skin tones, expressions, etc . . . but since
she's dead what's the point?  Though I guess the technique
would improve the look.  So why not change with the times?

*** As far as memories becoming muddled, I agree with that. However, the way that post was written, the author of that post didn't seem to be saying "I think I seen this, but I'm not sure." To me he was saying that he definitely "did" see it. And the way some people just go on that something "was" though there's nothing to back it up proves to me that they either made it up entirely or they think they seen something, were asked to prove it, and had nothing to back it up. However, they figure it's better to stick with their story to try saving face rather than admitting they may have been mistaken.

Also, sometimes people recall a part made up by an author for one of the films novels and then got it crossed with their memory and they think they seen it rather than read it.My own brother had that happen, but it involved the POWER records adaption of PLANET. PLANET was on TV once and we were commenting on how much was cut out of it. He said "Yeah, they even cut that part out of the hunt where Taylor starts beating on the ground hunter with his beating stick.". Of course that never happened in the film, but it was in the book and record adaption and he had a false memory of it being in the film as well as the adaption. I think that happened with certain things people think they seen but they actually never existed on film or even in a script. ***

How long would a bombed out city remain radioactive? In Planet and
Beneatgh, neither Taylor nor Brent seem worried about radioactivity and
in the tv series humans seem to live in cities with no visible ill
effects. OPn the other paw, Caesar and crew are very aware of the
dangers in Battle, and Reena in chapter 4 of Marvel's Future History
Chronicles rapidly suffers radiation poisoning in an irradiated ship.

    Difficult to answer.

Nitpicking, pretty much everything we can see and touch is
'radioactive' but of course I understand you mean dangerously so.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are now both habitable and thriving communities
and have been for many years. Of course they have had the benefit of
    dedicated 'cleanup crews'.

A bombed city left to 'heal' naturally has, I'm pleased to say, no
precedent but most lethal fall out and radiation from a conventional
nuclear weapon actually dissipates relatively quickly (about three to
five weeks until it's relatively safe to go outside).

Some radioactive isotopes will remain for (current estimates) around a
hundred years. Not enough to kill you outright but the type that will
increase the chance of developing cancers.

So I would say it's treatment in the movies and TV show was pretty
accurate. Taylor and Brent would have been safe after 2000 years,
Virgil was wise not to spend too long in the city in 'Battle' and the
TV cities ought to have been safe from that particular danger after
    1000 years.

All assuming conventional nuclear weapons were used.

    Someone post something cheerful!!!!

Studying Greg's scans of this book, I'm struck with just how lucky Apes
was in its cast of novelists.Through force of circumstance, even though
unwilling in some cases, the novels had a stellar cast of writers and,
with Jakes and Effinger in particular, this was sheer luck, as neither
would ordinarily have taken the gig.Neither may have been thrilled
doing it, but both were too good and to professional to do anything

I think you may be right, John. Although the number of Chernobyl
deaths was listed at some 400, and many thousands more can be linked
to radiation from the accident, Russia has not allowed the additional
deaths to be listed as Chernobyl related. The internet has several
videos floating around presumably documenting the mutations caused by
the fallout. You might actually make some comparisons between those
of Chernobyl and those of the mutants in Beneath, etc. Sad. But
    you're probably right.

Good Luck James... You passed the trouble a while back. 661 is the
real Number of the beast. I learnt this recently from a Smart arse

*** As far as Taylor goes, in PLANET, he doesn't even know he's back on Earth until the final moment, so radioactivity really doesn't come into play in there at all, as he has no contact with the nuked out NYC. And, in BENEATH, Taylor also unaware of the destroyed NYC we see in the film until he is taken captive by the mutants. At that point, once he's in their hands, there'd be little he could have done about it anyway, as he had no way to escape. The original comic adaption and the novel both have him actually seeing the city before he tries an attempt to get to it, and he also says something like "i wonder if anyone lives there, besides radioactive worms." So taking the adaption into consideration, Taylor does at least mention it. But in either film, they never show him seeing the city, so I don't think he even bothered with thinking about it.

Brent on the other hand stumbles across the city via the subway when he ducked into hiding to avoid the gorilla troopers. At that point, I think he must have thought it'd be better to stay down there and keep travelling on so he and Nova weren't captured by the apes. But you're right in wondering why he didn't consider it, unless he thought "well, it's been 20 centuries, it probably died off by now."

In the tv series humans seem to live in cities with no visible ill effects.

*** I think that they might have been "radioactive" at one point, but the TV series didn't have the budget for elaborate nuked out city sets, so they just went with what was available to resemble a bombed out city.

On the other board, one member had a theory that the cities in the TV series might not have been nuked out, but rather the people were killed off by germ warfare. I still think, as with the films, the TV series cities were supposed to have been nuked out, but still, what he said does sort of make sense, though I still argue it was all budgetary. ***

On the other paw, Caesar and crew are very aware of the dangers in Battle

*** My guess with that is because BATTLE isn't set too far after the nuclear war, so Caesar, taking cautionary advice from MacDonald (who knew the city would still be radioactive) got Virgil to go along, as they figured he would be able to detect how severe it still was. ***

The 1968 Topps cards for PLANET were the first things for me.  I think they were out as early as April or early May 1968.  I remember that by the time I went to see PLANET for a second time in late June 1968, I went with either an entire set of 44 or nearly that in the pocket of my shorts.  The next thing I recall getting was the LP, which didn't come out until late summer 1968.  Sometime after that I bought the paperback Signet novel, but I didn't actually read the entire book until I was around 12 years old.

I'm Meg (aka splotchypigg) , and I, too, have been a longtime fan of the
POTA saga. Ever the fan of Cornelius, I also enjoyed watching the
television series back in the 70's.

I don't think this is Heston in the shot, it could be his lighting
double - either way, it could be a shot from a lighting test, or even a
mic check run-through for Maurice Evens.

You're right though about the price - a bit over the top. As is the
same sellers posting of the POTA TV SERIES shot of Galen.

For it my first POTA piece were "hand-me-downs" from my brother who
gave me his POTA LP Soundtrack, and his 67' Topps Card Set - which I

The first piece I purchased would be an 11x14 Lobby Set for BENEATH

Either he forgot about the scarecrows or he must have thought the humans put them up.

I think if he thought about it at all, he must have figured it was the
savage humans. At first blush I think these guys looked "aboriginal"
and not much less than uncivilized. (And, remember, Taylor's group
      had guns!)

Actually, when I finally read the entire novel cover to cover (had to wait a few years until I was old enough to get into it -- I may not of "officially" read it until I was fourteen), I thought it was superior to the film based on it.  I still do think the Boulle novel is much more sophisticated than the film.

You can get the animated series on DVD very cheap from Amazon.com --
and I'm sure the UK Amazon.com will have them in the right format to
play in the UK. Hope this helps you out.

You should get yourself an "All-Region" DVD player so you can just order DVDs from the US (which is Region 1 and can be bought on Amazon.co.uk)

Let's see...my first APES merchandise was the Gold Key comic of BENEATH.  Michael Avallone's novelization followed...I think my next item was the Cornelius figure, where he's standing on the steps of the Stock Exchange building's remains.  This was the assemble-and-paint set.

Can anyone else verify seeing this:  There was a balloon set of some of the APES characters, one in particular stands out in my memory:  It seemed as if it were from the old Power Records series--you know, the comic book/45 rpm record set--and this had Dr. Zaius standing almost in front of the silhouette of the Statue of Liberty, as I recall, this was the same drawing of the Statue that was featured on the very last page of the PLANET Power Records adaptation...let me scan it and include it in this message:

I would bet it is NOT supposed to be ape pelts. ***

I'm wondering if there is any documentation that would indicate
whether the colors of the Apes' uniforms/clothing are meant to
symbolize anything. I don't really have ideas about that. Nothing
really seems to fit, yet most uniforms are colored in a certain way
for a reason -- sometimes symbolic, sometimes functional.

Also, I'm wondering what the specific color name for each of the
colors would be. It's not that I'm color blind. I'm just not very
artistic, and color words aren't a very big part of my vocabulary.
(Probably olive, grape, and pumpkin don't work for most of you?)

The Lawgiver has spoken! If that isn't documentation, I don't know
              what is! ;)

You've answered both of my questions fair enough. The warmth and
light of the sun, the life and growth of the forest, and the strength
and nurture of the rocks and soil.

"Orange," "Green," and "Brown." That was pretty easy!

There was an interview with the costume designer Morton Haack in one
of the old BW Marvel mags. It's been a very long time since I read it
but I think the colours were chosen purely for how they photographed
rather than for any implied 'meaning'.

I'm sure I remember a reference to 'Roman Purple' for the gorillas. If
no one beats me to it I'll pull the issue out tonight and see if it
has any useful info for you.

If you need some kind of industry reference to match colors try going
into your local printers, artist supplies or hardware store, they
ought to have books of colour swatches to match inks and paint to.

Does anyone remember the first item of APE related memorabilia they
                ever bought?

For me I think it might have been issue 1 of the UK Marvel comic. I'd

The novel was okay, but there was a world of difference (please pardon the pun) between Pierre Boulle's novel and the superb film.

I have a pink Punch-o-ball "balloon" that has Zaius and Cornelius pics from the model box art and Zira.  I can't get it out of the package 'cuz they've become one.  This may be the balloon set you're remembering.  I'd send a scan, but the scanner's not cooperating.

I like how the artwork for the punchball was based on the Addar
                        models. Very cool.

I believe my first PotA item was issue 8 of the Marvel magazine,
though it might have been some of the TV series trading cards or the
coloring book with the gorillas on the cover. In addition to those, I
only had some of the Mego figures, the fortress playset, 2 of the
Addar models, and a couple of the novelizations back in the day.

The tall trash can was something I never had, but always wanted. I
finally found one in great condition on eBay way back in '98.

I suppose that is probably what's behind it all. If I recall, popular
appliance colors were golden harvest and avocado. Plumb was popular
for furniture and curtains. My friend's Gremlin (car) was purple.

I read it in eighth grade (about 1974) for a book report. While it was very different from the film I still found it enjoyable. Maybe I should buy a "reading copy" and do it again to see if it stands up 30 years later.
