.htmlTGIF! The final entry of CORNELIUS' JOURNAL is now available. Thank you to Chris Lawless, who came up with the original concept, and thanks to all of you for all your kind words of support during the past year.
To read the JOURNAL entry either click the banner on the Yahoo home page or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/CJ.htm
And now to introduce the Group's new weekly feature (drum roll please):
This comes to us courtesy of the great Dave Ballard, THE ILLUSTRATED MONKEY PLANET. This is a Hungarian comic adaption of Pierre Boulle's original novel. Dave has replaced Hungarian text with English and each page is accompanied by related passages from Boulle's novel. Each new page of the comic will be available every Friday.
To read the first page use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/MPC.htm
Finally, this Sunday marks the 10th Anniversary of the founding of this Group by Dave Pasco. To celebrate, come back tomorrow for a special Anniversary LESSON FROM THE LAWGIVER (and some other surprises) as well as on Sunday for...well you'll just have to wait until Sunday to find out.
Have a great day everyone!

Journals in one continuous session. :)
The Monkey Planet idea is a great one, and I definitely look forward
to seeing it unfold. Nice concept!

Not to give anything away, but all I can
say is “wow”! You really tied some loose ends together nicely.
On a different note, it’s a pity
that the Mr. Comics’ series Empire on the Planet of the Apes wasn’t
possible (wasn’t there a licensing issue involved?). Filling in some of
the missing years after the Ape Revolt and the events of Revolution would have
been fascinating.

Cornelius Journal/New Weekly Feature
Congrats, guys, on the milestone! Now I can read all
of the Cornelius
Journals in one continuous session. :)
The Monkey Planet idea is a great one, and I definitely look forward
to seeing it unfold. Nice concept!

This demands explaining - After Mego had sent someone to my house to see my Ape City and other things for their figures they came out with some stuff very close to some of the things I had made. I was invited to the toy fair and treated like a king. They asked me for a pair of pants and one of my shirts and they had made to my size a Corneilus costume with mask - the same that was used for their in store, in person appearances. They also sent me the new POTA items that were forth coming. For the hell of it they included a bunch of lose stuff like on Star Trek wakie talkie communicator, a few Star Trek figures and a Star Trek Bridge Playset. Not liking Star Trek I proceeded to trans form that bridge playset into a BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES PLAYSET. I made the mutant costumes, painted panels for the outside and in. Made an Alpha & Omega bomb (non-radioactive of course), and dressed up the rest with pieces from
various models. The bomb control panel from the Addar Dr. Zaius model An organ from Pirates of the Caribbean model series And finally a stalagmite/stalactite and a portion of cave both from "Prehistoric Scenes" models. The transporter became the tunnel Brent uses to go "beneath" into the mutant world. This has been packed away for over 30yrs and I'm surprised to say it's held up pretty good - although some of the scotch tape is coming off. Anyway, I hope it brings a smile to your faces if nothing else being a fun piece of my past and a proto-type for something that never was. Hell, when you're a kid ANYTHING is possible. - Scott <.html

On a different note, it's a pity that the Mr. Comics' series Empire on the Planet of the Apes wasn't possible (wasn't there a licensing issue involved?). Filling in some of the missing years after the Ape Revolt and the events of Revolution would have been fascinating.

.htmlGood morning! Tomorrow is the group's 10 Anniversary. To mark the occasion we have a special LESSON FROM THE LAWGIVER. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
To view the LESSON use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/LFTL.htm.
But that's not all. Due to the popularity of the Film Programs, one for the Go Ape! festival has been created. It can be downloaded from Files Section, Programs folder: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Programs/
And if that's not enough, a PDF of the first issue of Marvel's Planet of the Apes Magazine is now available from the Downloads page of the group website: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/Downloads.htm. This premiere issue includes both the first chapter of Marvel's Terror series and the first chapter of the comic adaption of Planet. There is also an interview with the late Rod Serling, an overview of the film series and an article on the creation of the Ape make-up.
Have a day weekend everybody and come back tomorrow to celebrate our 10th Birthday!

If there's anyone here who gets Showtime on their cable/satellite and
would be up for recording something once a week from September to
February and then mailing it to me (all expenses covered by myself,
naturally), please contact me off list. A DVD recorder would be
preferable. because there'd obviously be less of a postage cost involved.
Thanks!

The last time I spoke to someone at FOX they said both versions of BATTLE, the theatrical and longer edition, would be available on the Blu disc via branching.
I personally won't believe it till I see it sine it was not mentioned on the press release. It's didn't take much room for me to mention to you - so then why was it so hard for FOX to include that info on the press release. The same holds true for CONQUEST. All we've heard about is the "Un-cut" more " violent" edition, what about the original. There's enough room on a Blu disc to provide both; and certainly enough room on the press release to say so.
Just another sloppy mess-up.
Scott B.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed there's more to the Blu-ray release than what's mentioned in the press release. That release seemed a little early to me anyway.

For the newbies around here, Alex ran one of the best POTA multi-media sites in the late-90s. So his new site should be a real treat for fans.
I guess Alex can also restart his countdown to the POTA sequel, if this "Planet of the Apes: Genesis" thing gets greenlit.

Ok,
This demands explaining - After Mego had sent someone to my house to see my Ape City and other things for their figures they came out with some stuff very close to some of the things I had made. Made an Alpha & Omega bomb (non-radioactive of course), and dressed up the rest with pieces
from various models.
The bomb control panel from the Addar Dr. Zaius model
An organ from Pirates of the Caribbean model series
And finally a stalagmite/stalacti te and a portion of cave both from "Prehistoric Scenes" models.

But as far as counting down this new Terminator trilogy I'm really not interested.
Planet of the Apes: Genesis?
If Fox comes out with a new Apes film I'd say I'd be about 99.9% sure I will. :)
At this point I'm hosting one other site (besides potacollective.com) based on my favorite rock band "Disturbed" at www.werdisturbed.com

Yes it's been a while. I'm opening up a new POTA website at: www.potacollective. com
The site's content will be mostly based on all the rare POTA footage we've all had for years along with some POTA Movie Stills, Behind The Scenes Stills and POTA Web Site Links. Short but sweet. I figure, what's the point in having all this great rare footage if you can't share it with other ape fans.
The server is now online with a whole lot of construction to be done. Should be complete by late September. Again it's at www.potacollective. com
All the best. Al

I'm sure most of you remember what a heady time it was for POTA fans 10 years ago this very weekend; the 30th Anniversary was being celebrated, James Cameron was doing the remake and AMC was was hosting a Labor Day weekend marathon of the original films with the premiere of the 'Behind' documentary. It was during this POTA renaissance that Dave Pasco founded this group.
If anyone would like to read the group's very first message, posted exactly 10 years ago today, it is still available in the archives: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/message/1. A tribute to 1968 presidential candidate Hubert H. Humphrey;-)
I'd like to thank our great moderating crew; Glen, Mark, Dave, John and Donna for all their hard work in keeping this place running these past few year. And thank all of you for making this the best POTA group on the web.
To celebrate our anniversary several additions have been made to the Group Website:
If anyone has trouble accessing here, all the new additions are available on the mirror site: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/
Thanks again to all of one for making this such a great group! Looking forward to the next 10 years!

Glad you liked Cornelius' Journal. It was a great experience doing and I'm sad that it is now over. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin once commented how when she wrote a historical biography she would really get to know her subject, like Lincoln or FDR, and often missed spending time with them when the project was over. I think I understand that now. During the past year I got to spend one afternoon a week with Dr. Cornelius. I'm going to miss him.

Dear Scott,
You have to photograph these wonderful projects. It
seems many of us had very similar childhoods. I used to build huge structures
out
of cardboard boxes and paint etc, for my Mego
figures. I also use to make-up my action men (GI Joe's) as apes with hair
and everything.
In fact on a Saturday morning, a queue would form
at my garden gate, as the kids fro the street brought there plasticine and
action men
to be made up. We all would then spend the week end
lost in an apes world. We must have been seven or eight whatever...
Great memories
Can't wait to see the photo's
Have a great weekend

Beneath the Planet of the Apes Playset by Mego...sort of...
Ok,
This demands explaining - After Mego had sent someone to my house to
see my Ape City and other things for their figures they came out with some
stuff very close to some of the things I had made. I was invited to
the toy fair and treated like a king. They asked me for a pair of
pants and one of my shirts and they had made to my size a Corneilus
costume with mask - the same that was used for their in store, in person
appearances. They also sent me the new POTA items that were forth
coming. For the hell of it they included a bunch of lose stuff like
on Star Trek wakie talkie communicator, a few Star Trek figures and a Star
Trek Bridge Playset. Not liking Star Trek I proceeded to trans form
that bridge playset into a BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES PLAYSET. I
made the mutant costumes, painted panels for the outside and in. Made an
Alpha & Omega bomb (non-radioactive of course), and dressed up the
rest with pieces from various models.
The bomb control panel from the Addar Dr. Zaius model
An organ from Pirates of the Caribbean model series
And finally a stalagmite/stalacti te and a portion of cave both
from "Prehistoric Scenes" models.
The transporter became the tunnel Brent uses to go "beneath" into the
mutant world.
This has been packed away for over 30yrs and I'm surprised to say
it's held up pretty good - although some of the scotch tape is coming
off.
Anyway, I hope it brings a smile to your faces if nothing else being
a fun piece of my past and a proto-type for something that never was.
Hell, when you're a kid ANYTHING is possible.

.htmlWas there last night too Rich. Too bad we didn't get a chance to meet.
Anyway here's my report. The theater was a bit small only holding a few hundred people. The sceen was a good size though. The place was almost full for Planet and the audience was into the film. About half didn't stay for Beneath. Although those who did stay seemed to enjoy the film.
The print for Planet was good but uneven. Some reels were exellent and others were a little grainy & dark. There were also some visble scratches and splices. But still a better than the print at the Ziegfeld earlier this year.
Beneath's print was excellent. Very sharp with vivid color. It only got grainy where it was supposed to be grainy such as the forced close up of Mendez's eyes. Also, all the sound elements were in tact.
The highlight of the evening was meeting Charlton Heston's daughter Holly who was there with her son. She said how delighted her dad would be that his films were being honored.
I've scanned and upload some pages from the program book. They can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Programs/Heston1.jpg and here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Programs/Heston2.jpg

I think I understand that now. During the past year I got to spend one afternoon a week with Dr. Cornelius. I'm going to miss him.

Ok,
This demands explaining - After Mego had sent someone to my house to see my Ape City and other things for their figures they came out with some stuff very close to some of the things I had made.

Thankfully that all pin holes when I got them from being used in theaters. If you look real close and 1/4 of the way down on the right-hand side you can see the tip of a POTA glider. It had about a 3ft wing span and flew very well. It's long since been gone after a fatal crash while playing with it when I threw it out the upstairs window. That's one thing I haven't seen since.
So how much do you thing the suit would fetch if I sold it? BTW - the arm extensions are my own the suit didn't come with them (the brown material that sticks out from the green sleeve). I also bought these POTA slippers that were big yellow ape feet and
covered them with the same brown cloth to wear with the suit. Ah, the good ol'days. - Scott B. <.html

I had posted the pics as a mailing to this group. A few here
suggested I do the same on the Mego Central Board. I did but it was
a bigger hit here. Anyway. Here is the like to that Borard...

That mask is awesome! That's an outfit you would take to Antiques Roadshow and have them approve it on tv.

Okay, POTA peoples (and don't snicker), found a shot taken of me in my room wearing the Cornelius costume given to me by MEGO. The cartoon like wall up to my elbow is part of that APE HOUSE which I posted a pic for previous. Yes, those are all original posters too.
I also bought these POTA slippers that were big yellow ape feet and covered them with the same brown cloth to wear with the suit.
Ah, the good ol'days.

Scott,
Here's another great website that would LOVE to see stuff like
this...it doesn't take the 70's and its various toys as serious as the rest of
us do!

.htmlFunny site. I had the same pair of plaid Toughskins as the kid in the 1979 Spiderman photo.
I think the photo is from an earlier year though, unless they are hand-me-downs.

Prices on one-of-a-kind objects are always subjective, at best. I had a
left-over poster from a hobby shop I got in about 1969 of the Aurora
Batmobile ("On Sale Now!) model. I started the bidding at 19.99...got over 2
grand for the friggin thing!!!

I like that site because it reminds everybody of some childhood memory. We
can all use that once in a while.
