I just pray to God it's not Thade arriving on earth, and the
"genesis" of his takeover of earth resulting in the end of POTA2K1.

Hi Everyone,
My first post ever here- really glad to be part of the group. I'm
kinda wondering why it took so long for them to make a sequel? We
could have all probably written several sequels in the timeframe of
seven years. But I'm really glad something new is possibly on the
Apes front for us all to share and I think the stories in the films
really and truly are part of myth now and It's really weird how it
seems to come around for the new generations. If they took it back to
simpler stories and the kind of social commentary in the first films
it would be awesome. Animated done properly would be interesting as
well. Whew. I can't get my hopes up too much! Let's all bow our
heads to Semos and hope it gets through well and raises a whole new
generation of Apes fans. :)

and to keep it on topic he makes a POTA reference in the film!

Remember, Fox told the guys at Mr. Comics, they could write anything
pertaining to classic apes, but nothing in regard to Burton's.
Yeah, that's a mess Fox made and needs to get itself out of.

I would say the same was true of APES in the seventies. Only seven years between the release of a Sci-Fi classic motion picture and a very short-lived badly animated cartoon. Fox whored out APES.

Even though the Cartoon was very different from the film series I always found a place for it in my heart because it went the way of showing the APES in a modern society, like the novel.  Aside from that I fully accept other changes after all it was and is a Saturday Morning Cartoon.  ... in the end I very easily sit through it without rolling my eyes and shaking my head like the Tim Burton bastadization.  The strange thing about that film is upon my inital viewing thought the ending was the best part of the whole film - not because it made any sense up rather it was a true nod to the original novel.  Otherwise, it just a very sad and typical musing of film produced today.  Thank God we grew up with something better.

Don't sweat it. I still have several years worth of recordings of The 4:30 Movie, plus one or two other pre-Playhouse Video broadcasts so I have more than ample proof if it's needed. I would *hope* that the Magnetic Video VHS is enough. Thanks for looking though.

If you ever find that audio cassette of CBS's first BENEATH broadcast, I'd be interested in hearing it. I'm curious how much was/wasn't included, plus old commercials/bumpers are cool to hear as well. Out of curiosity, what shape are CONQUEST and BATTLE in?

Since these Blu-ray discs will sport isolated scores in 5.1 Dolby Digital, I'll assume they'll use whatever true stereo masters they have. <<

Which make you wonder if there are any true stereo masters for any of the sequels.

>>A final word about PLANET....  This movie was
originally prepared for a 4-track (center, right and left front channels, plus mono surround) magnetic stereo surround release, but because DR. DOLITTLE was bombing big time jut prior to PLANET's release, APJAC only distributed mono (optical) prints (including premiere theatres).  The original stereo tracks were then lost.  I've never, ever read that they were found, so I therefore believe what we have on DVD (in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS) is a "reconstruction" of the original stereo.  The music in this latest version (the '04 35th Anniversary edition transfer) is true stereo and the sound effects no longer have that fake stereo taint -- far superior to the previous Chase efforts.  (The Dolby Digital 5.1 actually has better separation (expansion) than the DTS.)  However, I still think the Goldsmith score has been mixed at too low a level.  I remember that the music used to dominated the soundtrack.  Now, sound effects are more clearly heard, but at the expense of the score. (Check out the scene right after the hunt and where we first see Ape City and the surgery.  Goldsmith's score is almost buried.)

Ask this guy at Fox he can say anything about what is and isn't truly stereo, and congratulations for making contact! <<

Thanks. Honestly, I'll be more happy to accept kudos if this actually results in the problems getting corrected.  :-)

Chris,
The audio cassette recordings of CONQUEST and BATTLE seem to be in excellent shape.  I used very good audio tape (Scotch Gold Master - came packaged in a plastic draw which attached to other creating a kind of draw unit) I patched into the TV's speaker for a direct connection so the sound is whatever was broadcast.  (Unlike my very early recordings made as a kid with only a mic in front of the TVs speaker and the family having to tip toe.)
For some reason I have two different recordings of BATTLE (One with the CBS bumper leading into the film) CONQUEST also has the bumber.  I have look, but I also must have the same for ESCAPE - it was recording I used to prove to FOX that one of their releaes on home video had cut off baby Milo's last "Momma!" at the film's end.

Chris,
I was the one who brought the out of sync audio issue on BENEATH to FOX's attention on the PLAYHOUSE VIDEO release.  I knew several people at FOX and the head of KEY VIDEO at the time.  BTW that was the first time ESCAPE was done in a fake stereo for release.  Although there was rumor and debated by me and those at FOX that ESCAPE was actually mixed for stereo but never released that way.
Then again when they were looking for the elements to remaster CONQUEST for laser they came across at least 3 different FOX logos at the head of CONQUEST - one that said CINEMASCOPE.  Although I was only connected with the PLAYHOUSE releases after that were released it was with the Laser editions I had more of a hands on during element searches and mastering.

Chris I did check for the other sound issues you posted but only posed what I found.  If there is any confusion over that we can speak about.  Contact me via my website through that email and will forward my number to you.

No...my Playhouse Video version had the wrong audio effects:  the sounds of the wind blowing through the tunnel sounds even after Brent and Nova touched the lower rung on the ladder...and especially the scenes out in the desert not far from the above-ground ruins of NYC where the Ape Army confronted the bleeding image of the Lawgiver...the explosion effect occurred after the statue hit the ground, there were horses' whinnies in a couple of places that didn't match, when one horse reared and panicked, dropping a soldier's gear in the process...

Here's review with screengrabs comparing what was released in the "Ape Head" and how much better it is as a stand alone.
        Scott B.
        I like these comments:

This foray into the franchise harkens back to the original novel by having the Apes live in a somewhat modern society complete with automobiles, and electronic convinces such as TV and radio. It also freely takes from other past representations by way of characters and the use of an underground race of men with mind powers. In many ways it offered more than the previous live action series did in terms of a multi-layered and continuing storyline between apes, and humans (both those who live under and above the ground). Themes touch on were very ambitious for Saturday morning TV considering subjects mentioned, are or intoned were genocide, global war, medical experiments, slavery, and political unrest. Although it used limited animated for its characters it did present one of the most well drawn and most detailed backgrounds used on any Saturday morning children's animated show. Aside from the story content, the series used a 46 piece orchestra for th e score composed by Dean Elliott. Produced by David Depatie and Friz Freleng the show was directed by JOHNNY QUEST creator, Doug Wildey, who also acted as the APES Associate Producer. It's not that these episodes are well done in this release, it simply that FOX has chosen not to due much with them. Worse, they that blatantly ripped off those who invested in what was dubbed THE ULITIMATE COLLECTION – which contained below standard quality release of this series… among other poor studio choices. If you purchased the ULTIMATE COLLECTION you should contact FOX and complain. They never should have released the animated series in such a state in a collection priced so high. Don't let them get away with it.

I would *hope* that the Magnetic Video VHS is enough. Thanks for looking though.

If my memory serves, I think there were actually two transfers done for Magnetic Video (which was eventually bought by Fox and became for a short time 20th Century Fox Video).

There was the original transfer, done in 1978, 16mm of course, but then they remastered it sometime around 1983. I know this because I bought both of them. I remember the second transfer looked slightly better than the first, but I think it was still from a 16mm source, but it could have been 35mm. Anyway, those had the original mono soundtrack and I would think would be the best reference choice for finding what sound effects should be there or not.

I unfortunately haven't kept any of the old home video releases. As soon as a superior transfer or medium comes out, I throw out the old. (Have saved some of the covers though.) Too bad too, because I'd love now to look at the original Magnetic Video release (1979) of PLANET -- just to marvel again at how bloody awful it was! I remember that by 1983-84 it would depress me to look at it, then came the wonderful (I thought then!) 35mm transfers of the Playhouse Video release in 1985! But, I thought those were crap within only a couple years!

Do you recall how the problem [with the 1985 "Playhouse Video" transfer of BENEATH] was brought to Fox's attention? Did people who purchased the videocassette write in, or did TV stations point the problem out?

I wrote them a letter about it. I remember very well. I sent it to them in the fall of 1985. That was just after I moved to Ft. Lauderdale from New York.

        - Scott B.
What was strange was that the Playhouse Video and the first laserdisc release of ESCAPE had the Chace "Fake Stereo" soundtrack, but with the remastered THX laserdisc ESCAPE was back to mono.

As for ESCAPE originally being mixed for stereo, I believe that it's probably true. The clue is in the stereo recording of the scores on 35mm film. The studio probably wants to cover its bets just in case they think the film will be good enough to merit a stereo release, but in the case of APES, I think all the films got screwed.

I was told for a fact from someone connected to the magazine "Widescreen Review," and who worked in the Hollywood film industry back in the late sixties and early seventies, that PLANET was mixed for stereo and that Todd-AO (which Fox partially owned) prepared twelve "4-Track MagOptical" prints of it -- but that they were never picked up (and later lost) and only mono (optical) prints were distributed! I was never told why, but I now suspect that the failure of APJAC's DR. DOLITTLE had something to do with it.

BENEATH was produced when the studio was in very bad shape because of the box-office failure of STAR! (the direct reason BENEATH's budget was cut), and later the failures of HELLO DOLLY and TORA! TORA! TORA! So, BENEATH got a mono only release. Of course, the films that bombed all had wonderful 4-track or even 6-track soundtracks!

ESCAPE was produce when the studio had only one other film in production, THE MEPHISTO WALTZ, for the entire '70-'71 year! Both got mono releases, yet it seems some of the cues for ESCAPE were recorded in stereo (I think because they may have planned for a soundtrack LP that never happened).

The studio was still in dire financial straights when CONQUEST was made and, as you can tell from the CD release, a lot of CONQUEST's score was recorded in mono.

I think the success of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE turned the studio's fortunes around a bit, and BATTLE had more money for a score done with a larger orchestra than what CONQUEST had, and it was all recorded in stereo, but then the movie didn't turn out to well and BATTLE got only a mono release.

        Oh well!

        -- Rory

Then again when they were looking for the elements to remaster CONQUEST for laser they came across at least 3 different FOX logos at the head of CONQUEST - one that said CINEMASCOPE. Although I was only connected with the PLAYHOUSE releases after that were released it was with the Laser editions I had more of a hands on during element searches and mastering. <<

I think the original laserdisc had a CinemaScope logo on it, which was stupid since the movie was shot in Todd-AO 35!

Shortly before the announcement of the Blu-ray set, I had received an e-mail from the first person I contacted at Fox who said to "Stay Tuned". Looks like we got the answers, some good, some bad. Isolated scores will be cool, but the recycled commentary is uninspiring.

The recycled commentary (and I use the term loosely) is depressing. This is such a wasted opportunity. I guess people have to be paid for such a thing and Fox is just too damn cheap, but then maybe they'll have it on the 45th Anniversary editions!

        Rory,
I don't know how they decided which logo to use.  I was never asked just told what they found.  Years ago when the home video depts of each studio stated is was all very new and everyone was flying by the seat of their pants.  The only good thing about it all was it was populated by run overs from the theatrical division.  At least there were people who somewhat knew "something" about film and its history.  Now for years they have been replaced by college grads who simply fill a position devoid of "film smarts' - which is why there are so many screw-ups. Not to mention really bad call in terms of good taste.

That's strange with the different logos at the beginning of CONQUEST. How did they decide which one to use?

I think the original laserdisc had a CinemaScope logo on it, which was stupid since the movie was shot in Todd-AO 35!

I also believe that original LD of CONQUEST had sound elements missing!

        Oh well!

        AUDIO
The sound is probably from a 4-track mix which pre-dates the Dolby System. This translates to a simple 2.0 mix, or Dolby Pro-logic compatible. In the end you'll get a MONO surround that is very barely noticeable, but a front image that is wide and has an "on the stage" quality. Dialog and singing are panned. Music swims and has depth. Dynamically it isn't the most impressive; however what it lacks in that vein it gains in placement and separation.

        Scott,

HELLO DOLLY originally had a 70mm release, so the soundtrack masters should be 6-track with stereo surrounds. Everything 4-track that Fox did back in the fifties through to 1970 or so had mono surrounds -- and they generally weren't that spectacular (in fact, I have a book titled "Memo from Darryl Zanuck" were he complains that the sound20department isn't doing enough with the surround track on their 4-track magnetic releases -- and the memo is from 1954! I guess the Sound Dept. never got the memo).

I don't own it, but if the sound on the DVD to HELLO DOLLY is only in Dolby Digital 2.0 -- and it should be at least DD 4.0 -- then shame on Fox, and if it's only 2.0 Dolby Pro-Logic surround, then that's a really big shame. However, I'll bet if Fox ever gets around to putting it out on Blu-ray, they'll do a 5.1 remix from the 6-track masters. I'll bet because of Barbra Streisand having a gay following, Fox will put such a thing out. Look what they did with VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.

        Hey Scott,

I've never run across your site before, so I'm in the process of reading your reviews of DVDs, like this one for PLANET's 35th Anniversary release:

        http://www.geocities.com/ditcin4/pota35anniversary.htmlbr class="ygrps-yiv-1050886573webkit-block-placeholder">

"The new anamorphic transfer was long over due and is welcomed to the format. It may seem a bit faded, and it is when compared to what it really should be. There is a bit of edge enhancement, with some combing. The keen viewer my also notice a slight flicker – noticeable when looking at set background walls. This might be due to digital restoration which may have been used to procure a good image. From what I was told when working on the Beta/VHS and laser releases the original elements have deteriorated quite a bit. State of the art technology of the day was used but could only secure one color balance. For the then widescreen laser release skin tones were first secured but that left all greens washed out – for those who remember the gray corn field you'll know what I mean. Strangely, the pan & scanned negatives were fine and yielded a better image. Now, with innovations with digital restoration a complete palette can almost be obtained as was used on PARAMOUNT'S THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (for more info on that proc ess check out that review). The color is here, but a tad shy. I don't understand why it wasn't done better. Aside from that… "

Whenever I watch PLANET I make sure to turn the Brightness down till I get true blacks, lower the contrast and turn the color up a bit, then it's pretty good -- not perfect, of course, but OK. I believe that an actual archival restoration has been done on PLANET, so I'm hopeful the Blu-ray will deliver the kind of transfer PLANET has always deserved. I'm told the Blu-ray of THE SAND PEBBLES looks amazing, so I've bought that disc, though I still don't have a player, so when APES comes out in November and I do get a player I'll have something to compare it to.

"A new DTS and Dolby Digital mix has been made for today's home theater enthusiast. Much better than the past DVD 5.1 mix this one is pretty faithful in re-creating a mix of the era with a wide frontal image and hardly any in the surrounds. However, if you listen to the 2.0, Pro-logic mix there is much more a surround based presence in terms of music. In the 5.1 mix there are miss placed (sided) pans in the t rack. Other than that this is a decent mix and heads above the past disaster. "

Well, have you noticed that the Dolby Digital 5.1 is better than the DTS (in terms of separation and panning)? I agree about the better surround in the 2.0 Pro-logic mix, but unfortunately, the front three-channel separations of the Dolby Digital remix is just so much better, however Goldsmith's score is still way too low in spots. BTW, I doubt that if the original 4-track stems from PLANET were found, we'd be really wowed by the surround (mono) track, but the music would have a much greater presence for sure. Get yourself a copy of the Fox DVD of BANDOLERO! (1968) and marvel at how good the 2.0 Pro-logic stereo surround sounds. (Why Fox apparently has the original 4-track stems to this but not PLANET I'll never understand.)

I didn't see anything "nice" in there unless you count backhandedly saying that the scores add a lot to the films... But to sit there and say the films are "cheesy" without the music is a bunch of bullsh8... I mean PLANET itself is a pretty quite film (and that's echoed by Goldsmith in his all too brief commentary from the 35th a\Anniversary DVD) so in that case alone the writer's comment really doesn't make the smarta*s statement he thought he was...

Either way, I don't think I can describe how much I hate the term "cheesy/cheesiness"... Not only when it's applied to APES but all around...

        Chris,
I had suggest that when BATTLE was given the green light for a widescreen Laserdisc release I had brought it up that there was a longer version currently playing in syndication on TV.  The person I knew at FOX in Mich. who did the element searches and transfers was amazed to find this out.  He did a search but at first nothing came up.  I then duped my Beta copy I had made of the film (Yes, Beta!) when in aired on a local station.   Once getting it he was able to ID cut footage stored.  Most exciting at the time was that he was able to find the elements in their original 2.35;1 aspect ratio - unlike the pan & scanned ones used for the TV print.
Knowing what to look for he dealt with the L.A. vaults and put together a complete widescreen master.  Remember, back than it was ONLY widescreen not anamorphic.  The master was struck and awaiting a pressing date.  Due to the poor performance of the previous films especially CONQUEST on LD  BATTLE was canceled.  The elements for CONQUEST used for the LD released were horrible.  Quality and price simply put consumers off and the when the numbers fell so to was BATTLEs release from the slate.
Another factor was, at the time FOX had decided to use a UK company for manufacturing the disc.  That company had a huge run of disc that were defective.  There was a problem with the glue process of the two platters - air had gotten in between the pressing which in turned caused a lot of micro bubbles which visually caused multi-colored flecks to appear when the disc was played.  Also, there was a problem with laser rot - as it was commonly called.  Those discs would just get worse and visually breakdown completely with multi-colored static-like noise in the picture.  I know FOX also had huge problems with THE FINAL CONFLICT and IMAGE ENT. had the same problem with SPACE: 1999 on LD (I was a consultant for that too)
Another factor in this mess was pricing.  FOX was asking premium amounts for the APE films $50 - $60.  When PLANET was first released there was the corrupted color.  The technology wasn't what we have today in terms of digital restoration for color and the like and the original element had really gone south.  The color timing was soooo bad they had to make a choice between having proper skin tones or achieving the color green.  This shows in the corn field sequence where the corn leaves are SILVER GREY!  It was horrible.  This color issue was only in the widescreen elements since newer pan & scanned elements and prints were newer and preserved.  Year ago those elements were the gold the studios cared for since back then there wasn't a use for widescreen elements after theatrical runs were done.  No one would have guessed that the original widescreen elements would eventually become a standard again.
Having been connected with this stuff with several studios for over 30 years (I started very young) I've seen and experienced the complexities of the evolution of how elements were treated and now preserved.  One thing it's not, and that is simple and clear cut.  Even now I have been fighting with WARNER BROS. over the current DVD release of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE which has problems with it origianl Dolby Surround mix.  It's amazing how what appears to be the simplest thing can be screwed up by a hack and people in the studio who have no respect for the art that makes a film.  What can make it worse is when those who worked on a film either simply forget or carry grudges and re-write history to suit their own damaged egos.  In the end it's just the consumer and fan who is short changed.

        Rory,
You are ABSOLUTELY right about the volume level for the music in PLANET!  As you mentioned it most noticeable just after the hunt during the gorilla clean-up of the human bodies.  Yes, I blew my stack when I first viewed it.  Being a Goldsmith fan it ruined the scene for me and bothers me everything I view it.
It's amazing how these techs don't bother to view a mono print to better understand the mix.  Everyone thinks they can improve what already been done instead of just presenting it the was it was intended.  We may never know what the original stereo mix was like for PLANET due to FOX's sloppy storage but at least there is a guide in terms of sound levels for the effect, dialog and music from mono prints that were over-seen by the director and mixer.

Actually, the whole sloppy audio commentary thing is just a reflection on how FOX completely missed the boat on treating these films right.  Bottom line they woke-up realized what they had and everyone was DEAD.  Simple.  They screwed up.  It gets me pissed because there are idiots at sites who get "x" amount of clicks a month who forge a campaigned for a film like  OFFICE SPACE and FOX listens.   Stupid execs. in a company who have no real background to call shots on what the consumer sees because they have no real knowledge of the company's film history.  That's why it's an amazing crap shoot when something real good comes out of the offices that isn't for a movie which was produced and released in the past six-months (showcased the true depth of film knowledge of the execs.)
A prime example of this stupidity taken to extremes is the idiot who decided to package this forth coming release with fan based impostors as this classic cinema characters!  Talk about spitting in the face of the dead.  There are excellent publicity photos, in excellent quality, of Evans, Hunter, and McDowell, and the like that have never been used - and could have been used in the same manner.  This the ultimate distasteful and "hack" handed way the APES have been treated by FOX.  It bad enough every release past has suffered horrible, simplistic and artistically flawed, not to mention inaccurate layout and design.  Now they use a rack jobber's approach of representing legendary actors in the same way a porn film box represents a know film knock off.
But you know what, who cares these people are dead.
So what's next?  Holding auditions for the best drag queen to play Bette Davis on the Blu-ray edition of  ALL ABOUT EVE?!

Yeah, I know you have to have techs and suits to run the studio,
but they should only be there to facilitate the artists, not run roughshod
over them.  Just like Labels in the music industry.  They are replace able.
Artists are not.  Without artists all they can sell are T-Shirt and Bumper
Stickers!  Brian Wilson went back to supervise the remastering of his mono
mixes, and he's deaf in one ear!  I find it incredulous that these chumps let
people who are little more than interns re-master the mixes of these films.

You're absolutely right.  Interestingly, when you brought up about how Brian Wilson is deaf in one ear - the same is true for composer Derek Wadsworth (deaf in one ear)  who wrote the score for the second year of SPACE:1999  But when it came time for his music to be prepared for release on CD via  a UK fan club they ignored him and mixed it to their liking.   The end result was off completely contrary to what Derek would have wanted.  So I guess this happens a lot, and not just here in the U.S.

Why not put out some new info on a new release?
For example; Kim actually gave up on eating altogether.
She found that looking into the mirror didn't do much for
her appetite.  So at lunch she opted to sip a breakfast
shake threw a straw and catch up on the sleep she'd
missed from the early make-up calls by taking a nap
in her trailer.  She found that she didn't lose any weight
however, as the lack of calories was made up for by
the lack of activity, since she was saving her energy
for the camera in the scenes shooting that day.

The last time I spoke to someone at FOX they said both versions of BATTLE, the theatrical and longer edition, would be available on the Blu disc via branching.
I personally won't believe it till I see it sine it was not mentioned on the press release.  It's didn't take much room for me to mention to you - so then why was it so hard for FOX to include that info on the press release.  The same holds true for CONQUEST.  All we've heard about is the "Un-cut" more " violent" edition, what about the original.  There's enough room on a Blu disc to provide both; and certainly enough room on the press release to say so.
        Just another sloppy mess-up.

        What's up everyone? Alex here.

Yes it's been a while. I'm opening up a new POTA website at:
        www.potacollective.com

The site's content will be mostly based on all the rare POTA footage
we've all had for years along with some POTA Movie Stills, Behind The
Scenes Stills and POTA Web Site Links. Short but sweet. I figure,
what's the point in having all this great rare footage if you can't
share it with other ape fans.

The server is now online with a whole lot of construction to be done.
Should be complete by late September. Again it's at
        www.potacollective.com

        All the best.

Welcome back Alex. Can't wait to see the new site.

For the newbies around here, Alex ran one of the best POTA multi-media sites in the late-90s. So his new site should be a real treat for fans.

          My bad on that one.
          I had, for some reason
          confused Write King with
          David Watson.  So it wouldn't
          really work, since Watson was
never in any scenes with Heston.
If so it'd been Zira, Chuck & Dave.

          What's up everyone? Alex here.

Yes it's been a while. I'm opening up a new POTA website at:
          www.potacollective. com

Again it's at
          www.potacollective. com

          All the best.

I recently submitted a planet of the apes parody t-shirt to a t-shirt contest on www.torsopants.com and I won. I don't receive commissions if they sell more or less of them. I created the shirt since I'm a big POTA fan and thought you might be the guy to share it with, who could let other fans know about it.

You're right, it is a good interview.  But I think even better is unused footage that is in that collection.  I think it's very revealing when Roddy loses his patience with those behind the scenes conducting the interview.

All fan contributions are welcom. Whith this new gallery software I can expand on the galleies and ad sections for scans items, magazine covers, fan art work of any kind and so on. So for anyone who wants to contribute, all pota related images are welcome. I'm even thinking of making a TV Series, Toons and Behind Planet of the Apes capture sections as well
