    Well in the Cornelius' Journal one possible scenario was presented to explain this.

    It's not much smaller. It is the exact same prop. And who says that Taylor's ship doesn't have a side hatch.

    I just bought another player and 210 movies for a song on ebay.
    Laserdiscs are still fun, because they are so cheap now. I got that lot
    for less than half the cost of renting movies, I had never seen half of
    them. Once I watch them, I'll resale them... I know what you mean
    about the dvd experience not being the same though...
    I just can't go back to watching laserdiscs, with the lower resolution, side flips and the "speckelings."

    DVDs may not have the same weight as getting out a laserdisc, especially ones with gatefold jackets or boxed editions, but they sure give you a much better video experience than laserdiscs then. Of course back in those days, which ended just ten years ago, I didn't know any better.

    I just worked with two different people in Michigan where there was a vault and that's where they pulled elements from. A few years later that office was closed and all element transfers were done in L.A. It was at that time I dealt with a different group of people - and dealt mostly with the office at Fox in NY.
    I remember that Image Entertainment was distributing FOX laser releases at the times directly to stores and even smaller distributors. In fact I was writing for a East Cost distributor in NJ in those days and remember the problems both from withing FOX and the local distributor with discs coming back with laser rot and some being recalled, while other always being pushed back for release.

    Wasn't there a company out in Michigan called "Technodisc" that was notorious for producing bad laserdiscs? I remember writing Fox and begging them not to use them for APES.

    I believe PLANET's 1991 laserdisc, which of course had a terrible transfer, was pressed in Japan and at least as far as I know never rotted.

    What evidence do you have that could even back up such a claim as it being Brent's ship or a "third ship"? You've offered up nothing to substantiate your claim(s) as to how it could be either of your ideas... If it's Brent's ship in ESCAPE as you're saying below, how did Milo and company get the ship, which was half destroyed in the crash, repaired, up, and flying? Or if it's a third ship as you claimed in your other posts, who was the crew and what was their mission: To find Brent who was "lost" trying to find Taylor? What became of the crew of the alleged third ship, and exactly where did Milo stumble across this third ship?

    Seriously, if you're going to throw out such wild theories, at least tell what your theory is, how you came about it, and what could possibly be in the films that could even justify your POV on it being that it totally tosses aside all "evidence" from the films... ***

    I noticed that too...and I'd be willing to bet that it also includes the scene where the three mutants--Caspay, Adiposo (the Fat Man) and the Verger of the cathedral--being gunned down via orders from General Ursus in front of the ruined Radio City Music Hall marquee!

    *** I'm quite sure that Rory was just being sarcastic with his comments... You did see that he ended it by saying it probably was just a typo didn't you?

    In any case, this alleged scene that nobody else has ever mentioned, it's not even in the script, never existed on film. It was not on the screen in 1970, nor was it on any of the subsequent home video releases... So unless APEMANIA took your false memory and decided to film a fake scene you'll never see anything like the supposed gunning down... This scene no more existed than the proposed "underwater scene" from BENEATH... Saying this scene was real with nothing to back it up is about as productive as saying that Ursus shot a protestor... ***

    And what about ESCAPE?  This "Secret Behind ESCAPE" section the disc listed...is that where one could finally see the deleted scene about the third ship taking off right before the AO Bomb exploded, Zira, Cornelius and Milo witnessing the nuclear destruction of the planet, hitting the time warp and landing back on Earth in 1973?

    *** You want to know the Secret Behind ESCAPE? The secret was they blew up earth in BENEATH and they used Taylor's raised from the dead ship to jettison back in time. There was no third ship, that's just total bullsh*t. I'll go with James' way of thinking on this for sure by saying "If it was meant to be a third ship, Dehn would have made it a 'third ship' in the script". The script and the film clearly indicate that it was supposed to be Taylor's ship from PLANET.

    The "secret" behind ESCAPE?The secret was the apes from the future came back in time carrying the saviour for their kind.

    This is the information it gave me on the blu-ray features for each disc (took snap shots).

    It gives the running time of BENEATH as 100 minutes.  That's five minutes longer than the version we all know.

    OMG!!!  This is a longer version of BENEATH!!!!  What else could be included?  Maybe those scenes with Cornelius sorting the humans and Ursus, Zaius and the Minister talking politics, and the fat mutant doing whatever it was the fat mutant did that we didn't get to see!

    OMG!!!!  OMG!!!!

    On the other hand, it's most probably just a typo.

The disc, as described in the TV show and where he had to have gotten the idea from, recorded the ship's flight record, not Mankind's history and downfall... It would have been recording glitches in the ship's computers or if they hit turbulance and things like that, it wouldn't have been doing audio recordings of what occured on Earth in 1982...

    It's not much smaller. It is the exact same prop. And who says that Taylor's ship doesn't have a side hatch.

    *** Well, in fairness, I will say that Taylor's ship was actually supposed to be a lot larger than just that front nose... In PLANET they showed a sinking ship with the nose sticking out of the water, that coupled with the fact that the interior scenes show a roomier vessel do say that the ship in PLANET was a lot bigger than it was made to be in ESCAPE... But, I know that the shp in ESCAPE is still supposed to be Taylor's ship from PLANET, it's difference in appearance is/was supposed to be disregarded... It was a quick doctoring job so they'd have a prop to get the apes from "there" to "here" and once that was done the story could move on, that's all there is to it... ***

    And how could our three chimp friends possibly have the know-how and the technology to raise Taylor's ship off of the bottom of that lake, somehow clean it out, repair it and launch it right in the nick of time?

    *** Did you not read some of the other posts regarding some of the possible ways the ship was raised? Apparently not, because there were some ideas thrown out which did not include an outlandish idea of a third ship... They may not be something everyone agrees on, but at least they stuck within the established facts of the first two films...

    Let me ask you, how could Milo know where this alleged third ship was supposed to be? Did he talk with the crew members? Did they say "We left an operational ship lying around in what your people call 'The Forbidden Zone'... Sure, we could use it to get the hell outta here, but we've decided to just leave it around for you to use..."

    And, you should be asking yourself the same question you asked above: Whether it's Taylor's ship (as we all know it is), or the pretend third ship, how would Milo have known when to launch it? Asking a question like this in questioning how it could be Taylor's ship is totally pointless and is no defense to your POV. ***

    Besides, this third ship is much smaller than Taylor's; it even had a side hatch where Taylor's didn't.  In addition to this, there has been several stills from the deleted scenes on ESCAPE that clearly showed three seats sitting side-by-side, whereas in Taylor's, there were four...two in front and two in the back.

    *** I am sick of  hearing about the side hatch and smaller size... You want to know why it was smaller: Because in ESCAPE, they used the nose prop from PLANET... The different interior was made up with three seats because it suited their needs for the unused opening sequence and the side hatch was put on there because it too was redressing for what they felt was needed for their opening scene...

    When they were making that film, I'm sure they didn't sit there thinking how this ship would be analyzed years from then. At the time of ESCAPE's release, repeated viewings of the films weren't as accessible as now so the general public probably wouldn't have given any thought to it looking different, if they even noticed it at all... They knew it was supposed to be Taylor's ship because everyone in the film said it is...

    Saying there was a third ship makes about as much sense as  someone saying "That can't really be Zira, after all, she doesn't look the same in this film as she did in PLANET... That has to be a second female..." Or someone saying "There has to be a different ape that was named Cornelius because in BENEATH not only does that ape not look like he did in PLANET, he is also taller, so that can't be the same character... " These two examples hold about as much water as your redressed prop theory hold... Visual differences aside, we all know that regardless of the film, it was still Zira, BENEATH's Cornelius was supposed to be the Cornelius from PLANET, and the ship in ESCAPE is still Taylor's...
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~
    Wait, I just thought of an idea: The ship in ESCAPE really is a third ship after all... It was the ship from the TV series... Councillor Zaius really didn't have that ship blown up, he had it preserved for study... And after 900 years, it managed to work it's way across the continent perfectly intact, never giving way to age or the elements... After 900 years, it ended up on the east coast where Milo got his hands on it and used it to get Zira and Cornelius back in time to give birth to their peoples new savior... It was all part of Councillor Zaius' master plan... He knew there would come a time when a three seated prop ship with a side-hatch door would come in handy... Good thing he talked to those astronauts, they knew the score...
    *** Hey, you're supposed to be on my side...
    Seriously, you're entitled to your opinion, but you asked so I'll ask you what does make sense in ESCAPE, so here's a few things:
    The fact that the apes are treated as a curiousity (and later a "possible" threat) by some and an absolute threat by others from the get go makes sense...
    It makes sense that science would want to dissect Milo after he was killed. They wouldn't have seen him as an equal or even a creature with rights but some type of speaking freak to be poked, prodded, and cut up as an oversized "lab-rat".
    It makes sense that the apes would be kept behind bars and under wraps upon arrival. It doesn't make sense though that they went on that stupid shopping spree and fell in love with human fashions.
    It makes sense that Hasslein would blow a gasket and take it upon himself to try having them killed because he seen them as a threat and used the death of the orderly as justification for his cause. He was down on them from the start and when he seen a chance to do them in, he did.
    It makes sense that when they needed help, Stevie and Lewis would call upon someone they more or less knew would be sympathetic to Zira and Cornelius and their plight... Armando filled this void.
    It makes sense that Cornelius was killed by the authorities... They would react to him as they'd react to any other armed and dangerous suspect, even more so because they seen him kill Hasslein and they'd have no idea who else he might kill in his rage.
    This is very disturbing, not only because of the horrible racist
    Regardless of the political preference of anyone here, I hope that we
    Good Point!
    I have a feeling that soon now one will
    even be able to question Obama's point
    of view without being called a raciest.
    And since one of the founding principles
    of this country is the right to decent I
    believe it may have a chilling effect on
    free speech.  As Tommy Smothers
    said at the Emmys Freedom of Speech
    must also include Freedom to be Heard.
    What good is Freedom of Speech if
    everything you say is shouted down.
    And still no mention of a standard DVD format release huh? Disney is
    doing this also with the new version of Sleeping Beauty....however if
    you buy the Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray set you get a FREE standard version
      I'm going to ask everyone to please refrain from political discussion unless it is directly relatable back to POTA. Especially discussion of the current U.S. election. It is boring for members from Europe, Canada and other countries. And stirs high passions on both sides of members living in the U.S.
      This is not meant to be a current events debate and discussion group. There are plenty of them out there already.
      This group is to discuss and celebrate POTA. While we recognize that POTA was a political film and welcome topics to discuss the political commentary in the POTA films, discussions of politics and elections that nothing to with POTA should be done elsewhere. Thanks.
      DVD release review for the week of November 3rd. Planet of the Apes and Star Wars?
      "Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary Collection"
      Holy moly! This is an amazing collection. All five movies are digitally remastered, including a director's cut of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" featuring more footage than the original release. There are tons of special features, commentary tracks, a lovely booklet, archive footage and "making of" documentaries.
      "Star Wars Trilogy" and "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy"
      Apparently, George Lucas is down to his last $50 billion and is rereleasing the two trilogies in their respective boxed sets. The original trilogy boxed set contains the Special Editions and the older, original versions of the films. There's nothing new here; no new special features. So, if you've already got the movies in your collection, you can give these two boxed sets a pass.
      Speaking of George Lucas, Spike TV's "Scream 2008 Awards" honered Lucas at the end of the show with a ComicCon Award.
      In his speach, Lucas mentioned Planet of the Apes as one of the great sci-fi films of the past.
      Very cool.
      He mentioned that he was from the generation of Planet of the Apes and 2001.
      And thanks to Star Trek, the conventions came to be which latter lead to ComicCon (Being that it was a ComicCon Icon Award).
      But samething. Lucas has always been a POTA fan.
      Cool of him to mention POTA.
      DVD release review for the week of November 3rd. Planet of the Apes and Star Wars?
      "Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary Collection"
      Holy moly! This is an amazing collection. All five movies are digitally remastered, including a director's cut of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" featuring more footage than the original release. There are tons of special features, commentary tracks, a lovely booklet, archive footage and "making of" documentaries.
      "Star Wars Trilogy" and "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy"
      Apparently, George Lucas is down to his last $50 billion and is rereleasing the two trilogies in their respective boxed sets. The original trilogy boxed set contains the Special Editions and the older, original versions of the films. There's nothing new here; no new special features. So, if you've already got the movies in your collection, you can give these two boxed sets a pass.
      Speaking of George Lucas, Spike TV's "Scream 2008 Awards" honered Lucas at the end of the show with a ComicCon Award.
      In his speach, Lucas mentioned Planet of the Apes as one of the great sci-fi films of the past.
      Very cool.
      Of course, the irony, as I'm now seeing, is that I teased you about
      misspelling "dissent," but thinking you said "descent," when in
      actuality you wrote "decent"...which means my joke about going down
      made no sense whatsoever.
      Judging from the image I've just uploaded it looks to me like the UK
      release may not include the book that's packaged with the US version.
      UK releases have always been inferior to the US versions and if this
      follows the trend I won't be buying.
          Thanks Chris but I can't take credit. All but one of the Century City pics were taken by Tim and the Malibu Creek & Point Dume pics were contributed by Glen and Rory.
          I requested a Blu-ray of THE OMEN set figuring it's perfect for
          Halloween on my site. The box set contains newly re-mastered
          editions of each of the original film, and the the newer remake as
          well. The original OMEN films are presented in 5.1 from their
          original MONO mix. They are presented in DTS Master Audio.
          Okay that sound real nice but FOX has F*%KED the consumer! They took
          the simple fake stereo they used on the older standard DVD release
          from about 4 - 5 years ago and dumped it on Blu-ray! To them re-
          mastered audio on these titles were simple putting them through an
          equalizer to extend and or lessen any hiss. This is real re-mixed
          audio like the BOND films.
          My concern now is that this is what they may have done with POTA.
          Even with the 3rd OMEN film which was the only one theatrically
          released in stereo (aside from the new re-make) THE FINAL CONFLICT
          was a pre-5.1 movie. So FOX went ahead and made 5.1 - which looks
          good on paper, but only if a REAL re-mix from origianl elements are
          used. NOT. They instead pumped it through a box that streches out
          the mix without any rhyme or reason. (UNIVERSAL did this with FLASH
          GORDON and XANADU). This is becoming a cheap standard amoung a lot
          of the studios.
          I'm not even going to get into how cheap the packaging is on THE OMEN
          film. The discs attach to the cardboard via a round "Sponge' like
          rubber thing. There isn't even a plastic insert for the discs to fit
          into to - all for almost $90 buck. Yikes.
          After seeing this release I am now on reserve and holding back my
          expectation for the APES due to not being disapointed. ...and what
          pisses me off most is that not one reviewer has had the balls to
          mention any of this.
          I can't wait to post my review on my site with pics.
          Subject: [pota] Now I'm concerned...
          I requested a Blu-ray of THE OMEN set figuring it's perfect for
          Halloween on my site. The box set contains newly re-mastered
          editions of each of the original film, and the the newer remake as
          well. The original OMEN films are presented in 5.1 from their
          original MONO mix. They are presented in DTS Master Audio.
          Okay that sound real nice but FOX has F*%KED the consumer! They took
          the simple fake stereo they used on the older standard DVD release
          from about 4 - 5 years ago and dumped it on Blu-ray! To them re-
          mastered audio on these titles were simple putting them through an
          equalizer to extend and or lessen any hiss. This is real re-mixed
          audio like the BOND films.
          My concern now is that this is what they may have done with POTA.
          Even with the 3rd OMEN film which was the only one theatrically
          released in stereo (aside from the new re-make) THE FINAL CONFLICT
          was a pre-5.1 movie. So FOX went ahead and made 5.1 - which looks
          good on paper, but only if a REAL re-mix from origianl elements are
          used. NOT. They instead pumped it through a box that streches out
          the mix without any rhyme or reason. (UNIVERSAL did this with FLASH
          GORDON and XANADU). This is becoming a cheap standard amoung a lot
          of the studios.
          I'm not even going to get into how cheap the packaging is on THE OMEN
          film. The discs attach to the cardboard via a round "Sponge' like
          rubber thing. There isn't even a plastic insert for the discs to fit
          into to - all for almost $90 buck. Yikes.
          After seeing this release I am now on reserve and holding back my
          expectation for the APES due to not being disapointed. ...and what
          pisses me off most is that not one reviewer has had the balls to
          mention any of this.
          I can't wait to post my review on my site with pics.
          - Scott B.
          The TV show locations will be a lot harder to pin down....I'm sure most of it was shot in the same park but a lot of the area looks the same...
          SOme of the show was shot on the remains of Ape City...
            I have noticed a growing number of Google alerts leading to websites that unfortunately are using Planet of the Apes to slur Barack Obama. This is very disturbing, not only because of the horrible racist aspect, but it is also using our beloved POTA for negative purposes. Regardless of the political preference of anyone here, I hope that we can continue to spread positive aspects and not let it get drawn into becoming a slogan sound bite like poor Joe the Plumber. Stuff like that stays around forever and personally, I'd rather have POTA stand on it's own merits!
            ...and I do not mean or want to start any huge political debate....
            it was just a thought....
            Using POTA this way has unfortunately been around for a long time. The only thing to do is ignore it.
              Even with the time dilation of film,
              Beneath seems to entirely happen in only a matter of
              days.  At least in Planet Taylor says, "It's been weeks!"
              There's no such indication in Beneath at all.  Unless
              you want to make leaps that just aren't there.
              I've always thought the events of BENEATH take place over the course of not more than three or four days, and that the time between the end of PLANET and the beginning of BENEATH isn't much more than a week and a half.
              Now, how did that pine tree in the center of Ape City die in that short a period of time, and how did eleven boneheaded gorilla scouts all manage to get themselves captured?
                I noticed that too...and I'd be willing to bet that it also includes the scene where the three mutants--Caspay, Adiposo (the Fat Man) and the Verger of the cathedral--being gunned down via orders from General Ursus in front of the ruined Radio City Music Hall marquee!
                In any case, this alleged scene that nobody else has ever mentioned, it's not even in the script, never existed on film. It was not on the screen in 1970, nor was it on any of the subsequent home video releases... So unless APEMANIA took your false memory and decided to film a fake scene you'll never see anything like the supposed gunning down... This scene no more existed than the proposed "underwater scene" from BENEATH... Saying this scene was real with nothing to back it up is about as productive as saying that Ursus shot a protestor... ***
                And what about ESCAPE?  This "Secret Behind ESCAPE" section the disc listed...is that where one could finally see the deleted scene about the third ship taking off right before the AO Bomb exploded, Zira, Cornelius and Milo witnessing the nuclear destruction of the planet, hitting the time warp and landing back on Earth in 1973?
                *** You want to know the Secret Behind ESCAPE? The secret was they blew up earth in BENEATH and they used Taylor's raised from the dead ship to jettison back in time. There was no third ship, that's just total bullsh*t. I'll go with James' way of thinking on this for sure by saying "If it was meant to be a third ship, Dehn would have made it a 'third ship' in the script". The script and the film clearly indicate that it was supposed to be Taylor's ship from PLANET.
                The "secret" behind ESCAPE?The secret was the apes from the future came back in time carrying the saviour for their kind.
                This is the information it gave me on the blu-ray features for each disc (took snap shots).
                It gives the running time of BENEATH as 100 minutes.  That's five minutes longer than the version we all know.
                OMG!!!  This is a longer version of BENEATH!!!!  What else could be included?  Maybe those scenes with Cornelius sorting the humans and Ursus, Zaius and the Minister talking politics, and the fat mutant doing whatever it was the fat mutant did that we didn't get to see!
                OMG!!!!  OMG!!!!
                On the other hand, it's most probably just a typo.
                Beneath clearly takes place over a few days, not months. Brent tells the Mutants that he had been in Ape City only two days before.
                UK releases have always been inferior to the US versions and if this
                I've been meaning to mention this. I doubt this book thing is anything to get excited about. It'll be a glossy surface overview of all the films, but don't expect great depth or any new revelations. POTA REVISITED and that "other book from England" told you nearly everything there is to know.
                I've read much by Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall at Cinemaretro, website and magazine, and they're OK, but they always leave you wanting more.
                I'm not surprised by this. The only thing that's better about some of these Blu-ray is that he PCM audio isn't compressed as it is on standard DVD.
                I do have to wonder though... if Fox is going to give us isolated scores for all the APES sequels in 5.1, are they only going to give us "fake" stereo when these scores are on CD in true stereo?!!
                I find that hard to believe.
                How would they have gotten Taylor's ship out of the water without salvage equipment, especially since the apes had such a low level of technology?
                I noticed that too...and I'd be willing to bet that it also includes the scene where the three mutants--Caspay, Adiposo (the Fat Man) and the Verger of the cathedral--being gunned down via orders from General Ursus in front of the ruined Radio City Music Hall marquee!
                In any case, this alleged scene that nobody else has ever mentioned, it's not even in the script, never existed on film. It was not on the screen in 1970, nor was it on any of the subsequent home video releases... So unless APEMANIA took your false memory and decided to film a fake scene you'll never see anything like the supposed gunning down... This scene no more existed than the proposed "underwater scene" from BENEATH... Saying this scene was real with nothing to back it up is about as productive as saying that Ursus shot a protestor... ***
                And what about ESCAPE?  This "Secret Behind ESCAPE" section the disc listed...is that where one could finally see the deleted scene about the third ship taking off right before the AO Bomb exploded, Zira, Cornelius and Milo witnessing the nuclear destruction of the planet, hitting the time warp and landing back on Earth in 1973?
                Just went to http://www.foxhome.com/ and typed in "Planet of the Apes" on the their search engine.
                This is the information it gave me on the blu-ray features for each disc (took snap shots).
                It gives the running time of BENEATH as 100 minutes.  That's five minutes longer than the version we all know.
                OMG!!!  This is a longer version of BENEATH!!!!  What else could be included?  Maybe those scenes with Cornelius sorting the humans and Ursus, Zaius and the Minister talking politics, and the fat mutant doing whatever it was the fat mutant did that we didn't get to see!
                OMG!!!!  OMG!!!!
                On the other hand, it's most probably just a typo.
                Maybe the ship IS a zebra. That would explain everything.
                  Good Point!
                  I have a feeling that soon now one will
                  even be able to question Obama's point
                  of view without being called a raciest.
                  And since one of the founding principles
                  of this country is the right to decent I
                  believe it may have a chilling effect on
                  free speech.  As Tommy Smothers
                  said at the Emmys Freedom of Speech
                  must also include Freedom to be Heard.
                  What good is Freedom of Speech if
                  everything you say is shouted down.
                  In Escape, when the President meets with the other staff members and
                  informs them of the Apes landing, he mentions that the ship that
                  landed on the coast was indeed Taylors ship.
                  I know James doesn't want us talking politics here, and has insulted Europeans by saying our Presidential elections bore them, which I believe the exact opposite is true, but I'm going to talk what I want to talk -- dammit all to hell! -- and I doubt any Europeans will find it boring.
                  Remember a couple weeks ago I posted a bio of Michael Wilson (Planet's co-screenwriter), well, that reminded me of a book I ran across years ago in a bookstore but didn't buy because I thought it cost too much. Anyway, I looked on Amazon recently and found a used copy for $4.00. It's titled "Blacklisted: The Film Lover's Guide to the Hollywood Blacklist" by Paul Buhle and Dave Wagner. It lists nearly every movie made that had any contribution by anyone who was blacklisted back in 50s/60s and a commentary. I thought I'd copy out what it has to say about PLANET OF THE APES even if it is political, and with the recent mentions of the tasteless comparisons between POTA and blacks (anyone here remember Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING?), I thought I'd remind everyone of the only thing controversially related to POTA that's black -- the blacklist!
                  But before I get to PLANET, here's a paragraph from what the book has to say about another Wilson scripted film classic, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI:
                  "(David) Lean's work was highly praised by American left-wingers and did his best work on this film. More than a little credit for that went into the sharpness of Wilson's writing. As in the later Planet of the Apes, also based on a Boulle novel, Wilson managed to drain some of the worst colonial attitudes from the original; it had not eluded literary critics of the novel that the Japanese played much the same role as captors in the original narrative that the gorillas played in Planet. By the time Wilson was done with the screenplay, all traces of this sort of thing had been removed."
                  OK, now to the entry on PLANET OF THE APES:
                  "One of the most popular sci-fi films of all time, Planet is also a landmark film of the blacklist because screenwriter Wilson, perhaps the most talented Marxist in the history of screenwriting, recast the action film into a powerful satirical allegory of the blacklist itself.
                  Three astronauts from the past arrive on earth, are captures by apes and become the center of a political struggle between ruling orangutans, whose government and religion are suspiciously similar to that of U.S. southern conservatives (right down to the coiffed hairdos and investigating committees), while the liberal chimpanzees are scientists who are on the verge of proving that ape creationism is a superstition and that humans might actually have possessed an early civilization. When this dispute erupts into a show trial for the astronaut Heston and the chimpanzees act as his defense attorneys, the deeper theme is revealed. The chief orangutan growls at the chimps: 'Let us warn our friends that they are endangering their own careers by defending this animal.' The chimps' exchange of shocked glances at this threat of blacklisting had a knowing glint, for the actress in the monkey suit was in reality Kim Hunter, who had been named in the red-baiting publication, Red Channels, and blacklisted for four years in the mid-1950s. Later, when Heston and the chimps come across one of the astronauts and discover that the orangs have lobotomized him, Heston shouts, 'You cut out his memory, you took his identity, and that's what you want to do to me!' This is Wilson's metaphor for what happened to the 'friendly witnesses' who cooperated with HUAC. The famous (and brilliant) final scene in the movie was written by Serling before Wilson made his contribution and contains an additional political warning, this one against nuclear war.
                  There may have been no more devastating revenge in the fight against the blacklist than the image when Heston, stripped naked before his accusers, watches the orangutans of HUAC cover their eyes, ears and mouth in the ancient image of determined ignorance. Critics and the public did not get the joke in 1968, and so the film became Wilson's literary time capsule, buried deep in the imagery of popular culture, to be excavated in the twenty-first century. All of this was anticipated, eerily enough, by Bertold Brecht in 1947, when he emerged from his HUAC testimony and remarked to Joseph Losey that his experience was like 'a zoologist being cross-examined by apes.'"
                      THE OMEN also has an isolated score.  The isolated score is mixed differently than the music on the film.  The OMEN music in the film leans to the right front channel, with very little tha that is noticable in the surrounds.
                      The isolated score is more evenly spread and sound normal.  I can only hope all this is different for the APES films.
                      Okay that sound real nice but FOX has F*%KED the consumer! They took
                      the simple fake stereo they used on the older standard DVD release
                      from about 4 - 5 years ago and dumped it on Blu-ray! To them re-
                      mastered audio on these titles were simple putting them through an
                      equalizer to extend and or lessen any hiss. This is real re-mixed
                      audio like the BOND films.
                      I'm not surprised by this.  The only thing that's better about some of these Blu-ray is that he PCM audio isn't compressed as it is on standard DVD.
                      I do have to wonder though... if Fox is going to give us isolated scores for all the APES sequels in 5.1, are they only going to give us "fake" stereo when these scores are on CD in true stereo?!!
                      I find that hard to believe.
                      As far as the packaging goes... well, we know what we think of the graphics.
                      Thanks for that update, James.
                      I just finished my site last night. I would have updated it with Linda's appearance at the L.A. screening but because it's already this Sunday (tomorrow), it would make very little impact on my part. Would have been nice to be there. Hopefully some here goes and provides us with photographs of the event.
