| Subject: Super 8s (second version) |
.html.html Just purchased a second set of Planet of the Apes Super 8s on e-bay. Got all 5 films Color/Silent/Subtitles for $61. and change (including shipping).
Great deal, couldn't resist. I'll now have all 5 Super8s Color/Silent/Subtitles (with sound) as I'll be dubbing in the sound from my sound Super8s.
The end result will be that I'll now have both Color/Silent/Subtitles and Color/Sound (when you rasie the volume). Having two version in one.
Also the quality will be much better as these Super8s are all complete and in their original boxes. Unlike the ones I have now which are all spliced together (one film after another) by it's previous owner. So now all original headers and Super 8 lead film will be seen before the show begins.
And for the price, I simply couldn't resist.
I'll keep you all posted once I have them online. They'll be replacing the ones I have online now.

I did read that some of POTA was supposed to have been filmed around Page, Arizona, which is an area that has a large Indian population. Navaho to be exact. In fact, they own the land Page is built upon and in a few decades it's due to go back to the tribe.

I didn't know she was married to Culp I met him at a convention once-he was kind of crabby that day...maybe I would be, too if I had to sign autographs and listen to fans all day. Bruce
France Nuyen and Robert Culp were married for only about four or five years in the late 60s/early 70s. As I told you, she met him when she signed to do an episode of "I Spy." I found this out listening to Culp's commentary on the Season One DVDs for "I Spy." He sounds to me like he's got or had a huge ego and was very full of himself. Anyway, he tells the story that his first "date" with Nuyen was to show her the beach location in Southern Cal. where the episode of "I Spy" was going to be filmed. This was in October 1965. He asked her to meet him at the beach at 8 A.M. the next morning. What he didn't know, and wouldn't find out until years later, was that Nuyen was unaware that the next morning was the first day of Daylight Savings Time. She didn't know to put her clock back an hour the night before, so she got to the beach an hour early and had to wait for him all alone.
He said that she didn't say a thing about it at the time but was secretly furious over it, and years later when she divorced him, she cited this incident as one of the reasons why.
I also believe I read someplace that France Nuyen and Marlon Brando had an affair in the late fifties or early sixties, and that when he dumped her, she tried to kill herself or had a nervous breakdown at least.
Also, do you folks known that France Nuyen once played Charlton Heston's mistress in a 1962 movie called DIAMOND HEAD? In it, she dies giving birth to his baby.

Just went to www.foxhome. com and typed in "Planet of the Apes" on the their search engine.
This is the information it gave me on the blu-ray features for each disc (took snap shots). It gives the running time of BENEATH as 100 minutes. That's five minutes longer than the version we all know.
OMG!!! This is a longer version of BENEATH!!!! What else could be included? Maybe those scenes with Cornelius sorting the humans and Ursus, Zaius and the Minister talking politics, and the fat mutant doing whatever it was the fat mutant did that we didn't get to see!
OMG!!!! OMG!!!!
On the other hand, it's most probably just a typo.

What eyeshadow?
The Oraganutan in question looks androgynous enough so it is impossible to make a determination. Anything in regard to the filmmakers' intentio ns is complete speculation. That's a girl under that makeup, James. Just look at those eyes. Can't you tell these things, James, you silly? -- Rory | | |

Well it's just a writer's trick to keep the series going, but wasn't
Brent's ship
smashed and burnt beyond recognition? Here's an idea. Taylor's
ship hit
a layer of high salinity and popped to the surface waterlogged but near
intact.
That means that after Milo dried it out all he needed was the hatch that
they
blew when the abandoned ship. Which was supplied by the wreckage of
Brent's ship which he found in the desert by retracing Nova's horse's
track.
It's either that of the army was going around in circles for weeks while
Milo
put Brent's ship back together piece by piece without an assembly
manual.

My point exactly. Even with the time dilation of film,
Beneath seems to entirely happen in only a matter of
days. At least in Planet Taylor says, "It's been weeks!"
There's no such indication in Beneath at all. Unless
you want to make leaps that just aren't there. Then
you may as well say it was a spare ship from Patrick's

Yes it is a male in the script.
But it also says a female chimp was on the auction block.
I don't remember any such chimp, do you. It also has a scene
where they were putting their heads through the arm holes of
their clothes and, if shot at all, it was cut. Lots of things in
the
script are changed during shooting. If you find a script that
is
line for line, shot for shot accurate, then chances are it's not
a script, but a transcript. Even shooting scripts aren't that
accurate. You're always shooting more than you use.

Also, the ship may not have sunk completely. We don't know what kind of underwater current may have caused the ship to float off to the other side of the basin while still underwater. We don't even know if the dept is even all around that area. Truthfully there's even a possibility the mutants may have gotten even part way out of the water with the intention to study it and leaving with all that started. It's interesting to note that they never really doubt what seems to be a fantastic story told in simplistic terms by Brent. Even if they did get the same story from Taylor maybe since questioning him they had found the proof they needed for his story to be true. I'm not saying they brought the ship all the way up and out of the water but perhaps they brought it up to level where it was half out of the water and in a
portion of the lake more shallow making it unknowingly easier for the apes. We know the mutants have tele-communication abilities might some/a few have telekinesis?

I've always thought the events of BENEATH take place over the course of not more than three or four days, and that the time between the end of PLANET and the beginning of BENEATH isn't much more than a week and a half.
Now, how did that pine tree in the center of Ape City die in that short a period of time, and how did eleven boneheaded gorilla scouts all manage to get themselves captured?

I love the one where it's the mutants making the lightening during the astronauts' trek n PLANET.
If the mutants were so bright, why couldn't they protect themselves better? I mean for nearly two thousand years they're living right next door to the apes (if you go along with James and others idea about the size of the area Cornelius' map shows), and the apes know nothing about them -- then eleven bonehead gorillas get took and "Whoops, Apocalypse!"

**** When they are questioning Brent, they don't neccessarily believe him... Even if they did get the same story from Taylor maybe since questioning him they had found the proof they needed for his story to be true.
*** They would not have gotten any proof of the validity of Taylor's story from Brent, at least not regarding Taylor's ship... Brent wouldn't have known where Taylor's craft landed any more than his Skipper would have... What Taylor told the mutants wouldn't have jibed with what Brent told them, because Brent didn't tell them anything regarding the whereabouts of Taylor's ship, because Brent didn't even know where it was. *** Whatever anyone's personal theory is regarding the raising of Taylor's ship, it is pretty safe to say that it's resurrection had to have started during the events of PLANET... One could guess that Milo went searching for it shortly after Taylor tried telling his story to Zira and Cornelius in Cornelius' office. After that meeting (which was ended by the arrival of Zaius), Cornelius could have met up with Milo, told him Taylor's story which would have piqued Milo's curiousity leading to Milo's discovering it's location and ultimately getting the ship raised. Milo had to have been working on this undertaking while the events of PLANET were still happening, because as you pointed out in your other post, there was not enough time between the end of PLANET and the events of BENEATH for any of the raising and reparing of the ship to have
occured... ***

Well it's just a writer's trick to keep the series going, but wasn't Brent's ship
smashed and burnt beyond recognition? Here's an idea. Taylor's ship hit
a layer of high salinity and popped to the surface waterlogged but near intact.
That means that after Milo dried it out all he needed was the hatch that they
blew when the abandoned ship. Which was supplied by the wreckage of
Brent's ship which he found in the desert by retracing Nova's horse's track.
It's either that of the army was going around in circles for weeks while Milo
put Brent's ship back together piece by piece without an assembly manual.

BENEATH has a few sections in the film that aren't on the FSM soundtrack
CD- most notably the congas that wrap the music as Brent and Nova come into the
subway. Actually, that whole piece is somewhat different in the film (at the end
of the scene) than on the soundtrack CD as a part of the music was looped
in for a fifth measure (I know I'm not explaining that the right way). It's a
muted horn sound/short but slightly sustained note. You hear it five times
in the film before the aforementioned congas, but only four on the CD. Plus
there's at least two cues on the CD that weren't' included in the film, but part
of one of them ('Underground City') was used during the final scene. Apparently
there was music (unused) written for that scene but the tapes were
unusable. I wonder what it sounded like?
Found a couple of reviews BTW:
Out of curiosity, why would 'Milo's Death' be absent?
Chris L.
>>That may or may not be true! I'm not sure exactly what Fox is
going to do. For instance, the "Crash Landing" cue in PLANET has more to
it on CD than what's in the film. If I were in charge of this, I'd put the
entire cue on the DVD. Most probably Fox won't do it, but maybe they will.
Same thing with BENEATH. Also, what about the "Preview Version" of
CONQUEST? The movie has more score than the final edited version.
Will all that be isolated too? <<
*** Yes, but the isolated score wouldn't be the complete score to the
film... "Milo's death" will be absent... *** <.html

And how could our three chimp friends possibly have the know-how and the technology to raise Taylor's ship off of the bottom of that lake, somehow clean it out, repair it and launch it right in the nick of time? Besides, this third ship is much smaller than Taylor's; it even had a side hatch where Taylor's didn't. In addition to this, there has been several stills from the deleted scenes on ESCAPE that clearly showed three seats sitting side-by-side, whereas in Taylor's, there were four...two in front and two in the back. You did see that he ended it by saying it probably was just a typo didn't you?
In any case, this alleged scene that nobody else has ever mentioned, it's not even in the script, never existed on film. It was not on the screen in 1970, nor was it on any of the subsequent home video releases... So unless APEMANIA took your false memory and decided to film a fake scene you'll never see anything like the supposed gunning down... This scene no more existed than the proposed "underwater scene" from BENEATH... Saying this scene was real with nothing to back it up is about as productive as saying that Ursus shot a protestor... *** And what about ESCAPE? This "Secret Behind ESCAPE" section the disc listed...is that where one could finally see the deleted scene about the third ship taking off right before the AO Bomb exploded, Zira, Cornelius and Milo witnessing the nuclear destruction of the planet, hitting the time warp and landing back on Earth in 1973?
*** You want to know the Secret Behind ESCAPE? The secret was they blew up earth in BENEATH and they used Taylor's raised from the dead ship to jettison back in time. There was no third ship, that's just total bullsh*t. I'll go with James' way of thinking on this for sure by saying "If it was meant to be a third ship, Dehn would have made it a 'third ship' in the script". The script and the film clearly indicate that it was supposed to be Taylor's ship from PLANET. I don't know what Monsters HD showed, but technically no satellite or cable HD transmission has the HD resolution of Blu-ray. So when the Blu-ray DVDs come out, they'll be the best the movies will look on video -- that is assuming Fox has done a good job remastering these films.

I actually saw him walk right by a line I was standing in (Ventures

One of the things I hate about getting older is watching kids grow up. They just remind you of how fast time can pass. I remember Seth Green best as the young "Woody Allen" in RADIO DAYS -- now over twenty years old. Of course, in his case he hasn't grow up that much.

Ah, I remember those days too. Laserdiscs were just so damn exciting. Couldn't wait to get a new release. DVDs just aren't the same, not even Blu-ray. Everybody gets DVDs. And how could our three chimp friends possibly have the know-how and the technology to raise Taylor's ship off of the bottom of that lake, somehow clean it out, repair it and launch it right in the nick of time?
*** Did you not read some of the other posts regarding some of the possible ways the ship was raised? Apparently not, because there were some ideas thrown out which did not include an outlandish idea of a third ship... They may not be something everyone agrees on, but at least they stuck within the established facts of the first two films...
Let me ask you, how could Milo know where this alleged third ship was supposed to be? Did he talk with the crew members? Did they say "We left an operational ship lying around in what your people call 'The Forbidden Zone'... Sure, we could use it to get the hell outta here, but we've decided to just leave it around for you to use..."
And, you should be asking yourself the same question you asked above: Whether it's Taylor's ship (as we all know it is), or the pretend third ship, how would Milo have known when to launch it? Asking a question like this in questioning how it could be Taylor's ship is totally pointless and is no defense to your POV. ***
*** I am sick of hearing about the side hatch and smaller size... You want to know why it was smaller: Because in ESCAPE, they used the nose prop from PLANET... The different interior was made up with three seats because it suited their needs for the unused opening sequence and the side hatch was put on there because it too was redressing for what they felt was needed for their opening scene...
When they were making that film, I'm sure they didn't sit there thinking how this ship would be analyzed years from then. At the time of ESCAPE's release, repeated viewings of the films weren't as accessible as now so the general public probably wouldn't have given any thought to it looking different, if they even noticed it at all... They knew it was supposed to be Taylor's ship because everyone in the film said it is...
Saying there was a third ship makes about as much sense as someone saying "That can't really be Zira, after all, she doesn't look the same in this film as she did in PLANET... That has to be a second female..." Or someone saying "There has to be a different ape that was named Cornelius because in BENEATH not only does that ape not look like he did in PLANET, he is also taller, so that can't be the same character..." These two examples hold about as much water as your redressed prop theory hold... Visual differences aside, we all know that regardless of the film, it was still Zira, BENEATH's Cornelius was supposed to be the Cornelius from PLANET, and the ship in ESCAPE is still Taylor's...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wait, I just thought of an idea: The ship in ESCAPE really is a third ship after all... It was the ship from the TV series... Councillor Zaius really didn't have that ship blown up, he had it preserved for study... And after 900 years, it managed to work it's way across the continent perfectly intact, never giving way to age or the elements... After 900 years, it ended up on the east coast where Milo got his hands on it and used it to get Zira and Cornelius back in time to give birth to their peoples new savior... It was all part of Councillor Zaius' master plan... He knew there would come a time when a three seated prop ship with a side-hatch door would come in handy... Good thing he talked to those astronauts, they knew the score... |
I'm not so sure. There was certainly enough time for Cornelius &
Zira to get married
knew too much to
But pre-orders for the boxset I'm sticking with Amazon.. There's no guarantee that the boxsets will be offered at all Best Buys, so if I have to rely on shipping, I feel that Amazon is a lot more reliable than Best Buy.
I believe that $91.99 price at Best Buy is a pre-order price. If you do find it at Best Buy, most likely it's going to be more expensive than that.
Although the BB pre-order price is a good, I prefer to do business with Amazon when it comes to shipping merchandise. Best Buy is infamous when it comes to putting people on waiting lists.
It focuses on the visuals for so long, I think Kubrick
was masterful. He was often self indulgent with a camera.
I noticed that too...and I'd be willing to bet that it also includes the scene where the three mutants--Caspay, Adiposo (the Fat Man) and the Verger of the cathedral--being gunned down via orders from General Ursus in front of the ruined Radio City Music Hall marquee!
*** I'm quite sure that Rory was just being sarcastic with his comments... You did see that he ended it by saying it probably was just a typo didn't you?
In any case, this alleged scene that nobody else has ever mentioned, it's not even in the script, never existed on film. It was not on the screen in 1970, nor was it on any of the subsequent home video releases... So unless APEMANIA took your false memory and decided to film a fake scene you'll never see anything like the supposed gunning down... This scene no more existed than the proposed "underwater scene" from BENEATH... Saying this scene was real with nothing to back it up is about as productive as saying that Ursus shot a protestor... ***
And what about ESCAPE? This "Secret Behind ESCAPE" section the disc listed...is that where one could finally see the deleted scene about the third ship taking off right before the AO Bomb exploded, Zira, Cornelius and Milo witnessing the nuclear destruction of the planet, hitting the time warp and landing back on Earth in 1973?
*** You want to know the Secret Behind ESCAPE? The secret was they blew up earth in BENEATH and they used Taylor's raised from the dead ship to jettison back in time. There was no third ship, that's just total bullsh*t. I'll go with James' way of thinking on this for sure by saying "If it was meant to be a third ship, Dehn would have made it a 'third ship' in the script". The script and the film clearly indicate that it was supposed to be Taylor's ship from PLANET.
The "secret" behind ESCAPE?The secret was the apes from the future came back in time carrying the saviour for their kind.
This is the information it gave me on the blu-ray features for each disc (took snap shots).
It gives the running time of BENEATH as 100 minutes. That's five minutes longer than the version we all know.
OMG!!! This is a longer version of BENEATH!!!! What else could be included? Maybe those scenes with Cornelius sorting the humans and Ursus, Zaius and the Minister talking politics, and the fat mutant doing whatever it was the fat mutant did that we didn't get to see!
OMG!!!! OMG!!!!
On the other hand, it's most probably just a typo.
.htmlPersonally, I was never told which or what masters were used in terms of Japan. In fact I was never told anything concerning Japan. Those decisions were being made by a different group of people within FOX who I didn't have dealings with. I just worked with two different people in Michigan where there was a vault and that's where they pulled elements from. A few years later that office was closed and all element transfers were done in L.A. It was at that time I dealt with a different group of people - and dealt mostly with the office at Fox in NY.
I remember that Image Entertainment was distributing FOX laser releases at the times directly to stores and even smaller distributors. In fact I was writing for a East Cost distributor in NJ in those days and remember the problems both from withing FOX and the local distributor with discs coming back with laser rot and some being recalled, while other always being pushed back for release. It all went back to a UK company and problems the were having in the production of the discs.
All this came in the middle of another release I worked on (SPACE:1999 for Image) which had it's problems due to the massive release schedule of 24 discs of that series. This took place over a year and ruined that release with only a few hundred discs release on certain volumes due to another problem with a warehouse disaster - I 'm not sure if it was fire, or rain but I seem to remember the roof fell in or something. Titles affected by both the warehouse disaster and the laser rot were CONQUEST, SPACE:1999, OMEN III: THE FINAL CONFLICT, SUSPIRIA, ZARDOZ, and many more. Image lost a lot of money in that time; Fox's release schedule was ruined. The laser format was already showing signs of weakening and it was very costly to produce the discs. The disc also selling for ridiculous amounts. But this was forged by all the disasters befalling the format and Fox was trying to make it up.
Probably, the Japanese market was a saving grace for Fox due to them not having anything to do with the manufacturing of the discs. They could simpy sign a deal, provide a master and then just wait for the royalities. All the preparing and manufacturing, as well as the distrubution, was done in Japan. ...and the Japanese excelled in preparing laserdiscs. I still have my "V" box set and it is spectacular, along with "V" the Series box set.
OK, Scott and I aren't the only ones who remember the LDs were released out of order... :-)
Do you recall during any of the 'Studio Days' where BATTLE was specifically mentioned? Were you aware of the Japanese Box Set at that point?
Chris L.
>>Studio day was a Q & A format. I was surprised to find Escape released early, I bought each title on release date, but by the time studio day came around, I didn't really care enough to ask why. All I cared about was getting the extended cut of Battle released... <<
>>From what I remember I think it was more of a production problem as to why the films were release out of order. I remember at the time there were plants producing disc that had manufacturing ordeals. Whole runs were produced and then recalled do to laser rot. Some stores got the copies while others didn't. Then they were all recalled and a new production run was ordered. <<
Thanks to that Ansanaut site
Michael McColm's Milo, Rider at World's End
Gives just about as good an account if
Between the Planet of the Apes as any.
And has as few plot holes as an actual script.
