What's sad about the TV series is that if FOX finally wakes up to do anything with it more people will probably had died. While Naughton and Harper are still alive they should move to get some interviews and audio commentaries for the episodes.

Well, in the latest issue of Starlog (I think it's the atest, with Daniel Graig on the cover), some people who were bit players or extras talk about how mostly horrible it was working on the show -- out in Malibu Creek in the summer. It was very hot and bees and other bugs would get in their costumes and masks, and there were several stuntmen who thought working in those masks in that heat was the worst job they ever had. Several tore off their masks, left the set and never returned. It was also a sad thing to work on when they knew the ratings were so low and that they'd soon be canceled. One of the writers said he thought it was a terrible idea to make a show from PLANET OF THE APES.

By the way, I didn't buy the magazine. The article was only four pages and the mag cost nearly ten bucks.

Well, in this case take it back to Best Buy and tell them what the problem is (bring the disc with you). They might be able to fix it right there in then. Firmware upgrading is as simple as popping in a disc and the player loads what's on it. Next time, though, get a major brand (though it's probably one of the majors that really made this player).

I had a similar problem with my Sony. Very annoying! I went on the
Sony website and ordered the free upgrade disc. I got it two days
later and now it works fine. Hope it works out--

I wouldn't be surprised if this Best Buy player isn't actually a Sony.

What a coincidence.  I was at my friend's house watching the "Battle"
Blu-ray on his 96" projection TV during this timeframe. 8-)

We watched the extended cut, and the audio quality of the bomb scenes
didn't quite match the rest of the movie---you could tell that they
were from a different source. But the video for those scenes was
fine.

We've watched all 5 movies, and I thought they all looked incredible.
"Planet" was clearly the best-looking of them, but it's also the
brightest-shot movie. Overall, I think Apes on Blu-ray is a
resounding success, and I've gotten spoiled by being able to watch it
on my friend's setup!

I think the reason the bomb scenes in BATTLE retain the bad sound (dialogue somewhat drowned out by planes taking off at the nearby LAX) was because they never made the final cut, which is the theatrical version. The extended version is a rough cut, otherwise the dialogue in the bomb scenes would have been looped, but I guess when they decided to drop them they canceled that. I think we're lucky the stuff in the extended cut was saved at all.

PLANET looks to have been the one that got further restoration since the Legacy set. The picture is significantly cleaned up from what's seen on the 35th Anniversary edition. The audio seems cleaned up as well. Although the nice remixed for stereo 5.1 mix hasn't been retained from the previous DVD, which I'm very sad about, the audio seems to now have the best fidelity they're likely to get from whatever elements have been retained. I noticed that something has been fixed: In the courtroom scene, in the previous video versions, when the President of the Assembly says, "You must admit that the accused is a non-ape and therefore has no rights under ape law," you alway heard the word "law" repeated faintly. That's now gone. However, I do feel that Goldsmith's score is too often buried under the sound effects. In older mixes, and the Blu-ray still has a terrible Spanish language track that retains this, Goldsmith's score was much more "up front," and so I think Fox still has yet to do the best with PLANET's audio.

Everything I've seen or heard about the new "The Day the Earth Stood Still" gives me no
desire to see it whatsoever, and that's been pretty indicative of many new movies for a while now.

I was looking forward to going to the new TDTESS -- until the reviews starting coming in -- and then it was yet another "wait for the DVD" experience. I'll bet the movie doesn't make more that $80 Mill.

That's pretty much the way it is with me and going to the movies these days -- there's just damn little that I'm interested in, and with what it costs now to go, it's better to just wait for the DVD. Up till a few years ago, I used to see a movie a week. From the mid-eighties until a few years ago I literally went to at least a movie a week, but it's like when Jerry Goldsmith died, the movies died. Yeah, I can pretty much date the decline to the year Goldsmith died -- 2004 -- not that his death really had anything to do with it, but more like Hollywood is mostly interested interested in "superhero" and "video game" movies. I went to the video store yesterday and almost rented IRON MAN, but then came to my senses and rented THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY instead, but holy crap -- it's bleak even at the video store, damn little to choose from. I nearly considered SPACE CHIMPS, but just couldn't do it -- I rented WALL-E a couple weeks ago and thought that terribly overrated. I get so much greater enjoyment now from just simply watching over and over the old movies I love. But anyway....

About Fox.... Is it really news that things at "the studio" suck?!! It's been rather obvious for years now, and it's little better at every other studio. If you care whether Fox makes this new "Non-POTA POTA" movie, you better start praying to the Lawgiver big time -- my bet is it's going to get killed. Meanwhile, keep your fingers crossed -- and go rent SPACE CHIMPS.

I liked both "Iron Man" and "Dark Knight". They're both "comic book movies" but they're different. The cream rose to the top last summer. It's always the story; why studios seem to forget that is beyond me. But I like the artsy stuff. "Dark Knight" is the one I got on Blu-Ray.

Yeah, I thought both were brilliant. Wall-E was also fun...but the
second half lost the magic of the first half, I thought. As soon as
the human characters came into the movie, it weakened.

Sounds like wishful thinking on someone's part.

Good luck trying to get it changed on IMDB, though.  I can't tell you how many submissions or corrections I've made, usually with detailed notes and copious footnotes, and inevitably it will be rejected "pending further evidence."

I would say that, due to that, the standards on IMDB are incredibly high....that is, until I read some of the crap that does get through.  I don't get it.
