Well, in the latest issue of Starlog (I think it's the atest, with Daniel Graig on the cover), some people who were bit players or extras talk about how mostly horrible it was working on the show -- out in Malibu Creek in the summer. It was very hot and bees and other bugs would get in their costumes and masks, and there were several stuntmen who thought working in those masks in that heat was the worst job they ever had. Several tore off their masks, left the set and never returned. It was also a sad thing to work on when they knew the ratings were so low and that they'd soon be canceled. One of the writers said he thought it was a terrible idea to make a show from PLANET OF THE APES.
By the way, I didn't buy the magazine. The article was only four pages and the mag cost nearly ten bucks.

Well, in this case take it back to Best Buy and tell them what the problem is (bring the disc with you). They might be able to fix it right there in then. Firmware upgrading is as simple as popping in a disc and the player loads what's on it. Next time, though, get a major brand (though it's probably one of the majors that really made this player).

I wouldn't be surprised if this Best Buy player isn't actually a Sony.

Some are also, NOT upgradeable. It seems one certain players deemed by their companies are actually being considered for firmware upgrade based on the sales. Even Sony has done this. They've release 3 and at time 4 different models at a given time and see which will sell and have that as a deciding factor for firmware updates. PS3 is always top on the list for this to happen.
Panasonic has one of the better track records for player upgrades. Sony has showed several problems with some discs.
It seems the companies making the players and those doing the discs aren't working together on this. The software companies keep making changes to how the discs are encoded with new features requiring the player manufactures to do firmware upgrades.
There are probably going to be a lot of disappointed consumers come Christmas morning who can't play discs. It a horrible situation in which the public is most not aware of.

I had a similar problem with my Sony. Very annoying! I went on the Sony website and ordered the free upgrade disc. I got it two days later and now it works fine. Hope it works out--
I wouldn't be surprised if this Best Buy player isn't actually a Sony.

Magazine prices are based mostly on how much
advertising is in it. The more advertisers pay for space, the cheaper the
magazine.

Virtually all magazines are around $7 or $8 now (excepting People, EW,
and a few of those). But genre magazines and music magazines have
gone up a lot (and have just as much advertising as ever, if not
more).
They've pretty much caught up with paperback book prices, which is why
I didn't buy it. I can't bring myself to spend that much money for
something I'll read in an hour or two.

In a movie first, Fox's remake of "The Day
the Earth Stood Still" will be beamed from Cape Canaveral into outer space on
Friday, when the movie opens on Earth. They're joking that it's the widest
release ever, but really, is this the kind of message we want to send out there?
Don't give them any ideas, Fox! Wait until the remake of "E.T.".
The movie is scheduled to hit Alpha Centauri
in 2012. Maybe they can aim the next POTA at a black hole and hit a time warp.
Something for Virdon and Burke to watch.

I'd rather have non-talking apes then
talking apes with bad dialogue. The guy doing it is a talented writer so I'd
give him the benefit of the doubt. His plan is realistic apes for the first one
and then (presumably) talking apes down the line. And if it sucks, well, as Tim
Burton says, we always have the originals.

I agree. Like I posted before, a dame hack is using what has been done successfully before just to stroke his ego. Of all the names he had to choose one that was used from CONQUEST. Yet it's NOT a remake. Yet he is basically tell part of the story, but reworking it. He's use FOX to get his way of taking from something else but stressing it NOT like the APES we and everyone knows. It will be about talking APES but not at first. Who the hell wants to sit through a film that going to portray animal cruelty for 120mins showing CGI generated facial reactions on a real chimp?! That will not be enjoyable. The APE films were made by people who had REAL talent. They knew not how not only to present an idea that had not been previously presented, but how not to stress the more unpleasant parts of a story
via exploitation but keep the narrative moving. Points and issues were made with the APE films without making them a poster child. Not one person who work on them became the center of attention. They were a combined effort. Now we have a 'HACK" who with a few credits, which probably won't stand the test of time, and doesn't even measure to anyone person who worked on an APE film, roll over from his bed and take elements from a successful franchise to make what he think is better than what came previous. If he is that talented why can't he just create a new segment that honors the film before which fits into place. Truthfully, his ego would get in the way of being crushed by what followed previous. FOX USED the fans one more to get them to play into their hands. They gathered those interested pumped them up on an APE festival like kids let lose in a candy store and while they were high on sugar
announced a new APE film. If this was done any other time it would have dissipated like a fart. They knew what this new concept was and it was never a real APE film. Do you think I care if it eventually leads to a film where apes rule. That many years down the line we could all be dead. Flies got to crap and this is yet another load dumped by FOX.

What a coincidence. I was at my friend's house watching the "Battle"

I saw a magazine called "The Unofficial Guide
To Star Trek Collectibles" (I don't know if it's a one time thing or what) that
had an article about the Mego repros. Technically it's about the "Star Trek"
ones, but it's about how they got into it. I didn't know it's actually Dr. Mego
that started it, went from repairing Megos to deciding to make reproductions.
The name "Mego" is owned by LEGO so he called his company EMCE (MC, as in Mego
Corp.). Got the license with Diamond Distributors. Talks about the early
versions that weren't quite right, etc. Only mention of "Apes" is that the '07
lead paint controversy led to tighter safety controls and delayed shipping of
the first set of apes.
There's also the Jan. '09 issue of "Toy
Fare", which has a short interview with Jackie Earle Haley (Kraik in "The
Legacy"). He's in the anticipated "Watch Men" movie in a couple of months and
was jazzed to be an action figure (there's going to be a limited edition of his
character Rorschach in an unmasked version).
And it's already been mentioned about
"Starlog" (December). Some interesting stuff:
Don Murray says he rehearsed as Breck by
speaking in German because of the character's Hitler quality.
Bobby Porter talks about both "Battle" and
the TV show. He said on "Battle", "I was allowed to have my makeup altered to
mimic Roddy's, but only after I swore not to reveal the secret and convinced
Roddy that Cornelius should have the same range of expressions as his father,
the great Caesar". He says "The Good Seeds" paid his book costs for a semester
at college. And that "'Good Seeds' was well written, and it may have contributed
to my desire to write. I later co-authored an episode of "Land of the Lost" of
which I'm proud". Porter supplied photos of being made up in "Battle" and also a
shot of him getting into the Andy the Robot costume in the "Quark"
article.
Jaqueline Scott said Dr. Kira would've been
a recurring character if the show continued.
Marc Singer was up for the role of Virdon
but got Dalton in "The Gladiator" instead. Says John Hoyt (Barlow) was a nudist
and remembers seeing him in ape makeup and nothing else. "It's hard to forget a
sight like that. But he was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid hooked on
TV and the movies. Working with him was like stepping backward into my childhood
and forward into a new world all at the same time".
It says James Franciscus was offered the
Virdon role but turned it down.
Eileen Dietz (Jilla in "The Good Seeds") was
in "The Exorcist" as the demon, those quick shots. So she had makeup chair
experience. She says, "Everyone loves the TV series now. When I'm a guest at
conventions, people can't wait to talk about it. I'll say, "Look, I was only on
the show, not the movies" and they'll go, "It's the TV series we want to know
about. We love it!".
And there's stuff about guest actors ripping
off the makeup and going home because of the heat, getting attacked by wasps.
Says stuntman George Robotham: "I nearly suffocated playing a sea monster on
"Outer Limits", and I almost drowned on "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" but
they were cakewalks compared to dressing up as an ape". He walked off the
set.
And there's also an ad for the Mego repros
and a POTA gag cartoon. POTA lives.

James was a real intense actor. He would have taken the character of Virdon to a whole other level in the series.
What a shame.

I thought it looked great. Lots of makeup details I've never seen
before (most of which probably shouldn't have been visible ;-)). We
watched the extended cut, and the audio quality of the bomb scenes
didn't quite match the rest of the movie---you could tell that they
were from a different source. But the video for those scenes was
fine.
We've watched all 5 movies, and I thought they all looked incredible.
"Planet" was clearly the best-looking of them, but it's also the
brightest-shot movie. Overall, I think Apes on Blu-ray is a
resounding success, and I've gotten spoiled by being able to watch it
on my friend's setup! We're watching the documentaries next week,
then after the new year, "King Kong" on HD-DVD, and more. ;-)

.htmlWe watched the extended cut, and the audio quality of the bomb scenes
didn't quite match the rest of the movie---you could tell that they
were from a different source.
Hunter
I think the reason the bomb scenes in BATTLE retain the bad sound (dialogue somewhat drowned out by planes taking off at the nearby LAX) was because they never made the final cut, which is the theatrical version. The extended version is a rough cut, otherwise the dialogue in the bomb scenes would have been looped, but I guess when they decided to drop them they canceled that. I think we're lucky the stuff in the extended cut was saved at all.
PLANET looks to have been the one that got further restoration since the Legacy set. The picture is significantly cleaned up from what's seen on the 35th Anniversary edition. The audio seems cleaned up as well. Although the nice remixed for stereo 5.1 mix hasn't been retained from the previous
DVD, which I'm very sad about, the audio seems to now have the best fidelity they're likely to get from whatever elements have been retained. I noticed that something has been fixed: In the courtroom scene, in the previous video versions, when the President of the Assembly says, "You must admit that the accused is a non-ape and therefore has no rights under ape law," you alway heard the word "law" repeated faintly. That's now gone. However, I do feel that Goldsmith's score is too often buried under the sound effects. In older mixes, and the Blu-ray still has a terrible Spanish language track that retains this, Goldsmith's score was much more "up front," and so I think Fox still has yet to do the best with PLANET's audio.

It was the first movie I'd seen on my friend's setup, and it was
literally jaw-dropping for me. I've never seen any of the Apes movies

It's been a bad box office year for Fox.
This summer, and now recently with Marky Mark's "Max Payne" and they took a BIG

$30 + million this weekend but it's not doing the numbers a big sci-fi movie is

GOOD. That pool needs chlorine. Bottom line they make shit films. Bad choices. truthfully, most of the studios have been make garbage. A clean sweep is in order. Maybe they will get better decision makers with better taste. Max Panye was doomed to fail, Marky Mark sucks. He think creasing his brow is acting. He's not an actor. The studios deserve what they get. As said in POTA TV series, THE GOOD SEEDS - you can't expect tall ears of corn when you use the smallest seed. If FOX or any of the studios want to reap higher profits they have to start with better and original ideas. REAL actors and well written scripts. NOT KNOCK OFFS. Leave the comics to comics. Start researching good novels.

The name "Mego" is owned by LEGO so he called his company EMCE (MC, as in Mego Corp.). Got the license with Diamond Distributors. There's also the Jan. '09 issue of "Toy Fare", which has a short interview with Jackie Earle Haley (Kraik in "The Legacy"). He's in the anticipated "Watch Men" movie in a couple of months and was jazzed to be an action figure (there's going to be a limited edition of his character Rorschach in an unmasked version). And it's already been mentioned about "Starlog" (December). Some interesting stuff: Don Murray says he rehearsed as Breck by speaking in German because of the character's Hitler quality.
Bobby Porter talks about both "Battle" and the TV show. He said on "Battle", "I was allowed to have my makeup altered to mimic Roddy's, but only after I swore not to reveal the secret and convinced Roddy that Cornelius should have the same range of expressions as his father, the great Caesar". He says "The Good Seeds" paid his book costs for a semester at college. And that "'Good Seeds' was well written, and it may have contributed to my desire to write. I later co-authored an episode of "Land of the Lost" of which I'm proud". Porter supplied photos of being made up in "Battle" and also a shot of him getting into the Andy the Robot costume in the "Quark" article. Jaqueline Scott said Dr. Kira would've been a recurring character if the show continued.
Marc Singer was up for the role of Virdon but got Dalton in "The Gladiator" instead. Says John Hoyt (Barlow) was a nudist and remembers seeing him in ape makeup and nothing else. "It's hard to forget a sight like that. But he was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid hooked on TV and the movies. Working with him was like stepping backward into my childhood and forward into a new world all at the same time". It says James Franciscus was offered the Virdon role but turned it down.
Eileen Dietz (Jilla in "The Good Seeds") was in "The Exorcist" as the demon, those quick shots. So she had makeup chair experience. She says, "Everyone loves the TV series now. When I'm a guest at conventions, people can't wait to talk about it. I'll say, "Look, I was only on the show, not the movies" and they'll go, "It's the TV series we want to know about. We love it!".
And there's stuff about guest actors ripping off the makeup and going home because of the heat, getting attacked by wasps. Says stuntman George Robotham: "I nearly suffocated playing a sea monster on "Outer Limits", and I almost drowned on "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" but they were cakewalks compared to dressing up as an ape". He walked off the set.
And there's also an ad for the Mego repros and a POTA gag cartoon. POTA lives.

That's a shame. I saw the new DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL last night ans
was pleasantly surprised. Its actually a pretty intelligently done SF
film-- and that's why it will not do so well at the box office, I
fear. I was afraid they would 'stupid' it up with what has become the
standard fro BIG SF MOVIES- you know- explosions, chases, gun fights,
fist fights, cartoonish villians, etc.
Happily- although the film is exciting- the story is brainier than
average with the big action moments actually serving the plot instead
of vise versa. And I was thrilled to see that didn't shoehorn in a
romance sub-plot too.
So, I can understand why younger audiences will turn up their noses at
this film but more mature viewers might really like it. Its the most
intellectually interesting genre movie since GATTACA even if it isn't
as touching or well written as that brilliant movie. Certainly I think
POTA fans might enjoy it. Its not as good as the 1951 film but it is
quite a solid bit of SF that is not at all like the summer style film
I was fearing.

And I swear, I couldn't sit longer than 15 minutes through those films before stoping my DVD player and sending them back to NetFlix (both really did suck). The best CGI film I rented lately and enjoyed quite a bit was "Horton Hears a Who!" with Jim Carrey and Steve Carell. It's really good, funny, and the graphics on 120Hz are jaw dropping. I'm very much considering buying Horton on Blu-ray.

You put into words what was in my heart. When Goldsmith died future films lost something. True the man could only write for just so many film anyhow, but his incredible presence is so missed. Films, the few I've have liked still seem cut short from being more without his touch. I listen to what is being composed and it's missing something, there's no heart in these newer scores. It's so sad.
Then again, everything has it time, and I think of empty he might feel forced to compose for such dreck being made today. Perhaps fate is kind.
Getting back to what's going on at FOX - in going through the POTA book from the Blu-ray set the only consistent thing I found was how badly that studio has made choices through the years. They really have been led by men flying blind. Clueless. ...and since the development of home video it has spilled over. It's amazing they haven fallen completely in the passing years.

I saw it in the theater and was bored by it. The animation was pretty
spectacular, but the story is very overrated. I put it just above
Ratatouille, which is at the very bottom of my "favorite Pixar movie

1- How many discs in the POTA Blu-Ray set? 5 discs, each for any POTA

2- HOW are the extras documentaries/features "divided" and "arranged"

3- What about BEHIND THE POTA?
Many thanks. <.html

I liked both "Iron Man" and "Dark Knight".
They're both "comic book movies" but they're different. The cream rose to the
top last summer. It's always the story; why studios seem to forget
that is beyond me. But I like the artsy stuff. "Dark Knight" is the one I got on
Blu-Ray.

Yeah, I thought both were brilliant. Wall-E was also fun...but the
second half lost the magic of the first half, I thought. As soon as
the human characters came into the movie, it weakened. <.html

.html Starting at 7:30 PM on New Year's Eve, all five movies will cycle through
three times, ending with the third showing of BATTLE at 7PM on January
1st. Interestingly, CONQUEST has a run time of 90 minutes and the first
showing of BATTLE has 100 (the second and third are 90 minutes though),
so my guess is that they'll be showing the theatrical versions of both-
possibly even trimming a few minutes from BATTLE like AMC did last New
Year's Eve. Also curious if they'll be shown in letterbox, but somehow I
doubt it.

>>The 40th anniversary and Blu-Ray releases include alternate opening
and ending scenes, which were excised due to poor audience reaction and a need
to keep a PG rating. In the opening, a police patrol tracks and kills a gorilla,
which is shown to have numerous cuts and welts. Breck later references a gorilla
who turned on his master and was killed. In the ending, Caesar allows the apes
to beat Breck and the other humans to death. Breck does not cower, but faces his
executioners. Lisa does not say "No" and Caesar makes no speech counseling
compassion. There are also additional shots of apes and humans bleeding from
gunshots, and apes stacking bodies of riot police. <<
Sounds like wishful thinking on someone's part. I'm curious though if the
escaping gorilla scene was ever shot and subsequently shown at that Arizona
(?) screening. Anyone know for sure?

The estimate is $ 31 million. www.boxofficemojo.com has a list of the
top box office sci-fi remakes and Burton's POTA is # 3 behind "I Am Legend" and
"War of the Worlds" (Spielberg). Two of the 3 are remakes of Heston
movies.

They just announced that "Iron Man", "Dark
Knight" and "WALL-E" made the AFI list of the best movies of 2008. I'd say
that's a good sign for summer blockbusters. Good movies can still be made from
what Richard Zanuck called "gimmick pictures".

Paul Giamatti said it's actually not that bad, and he sometimes forgot he
was wearing it. Then again they were shooting when it was really cold so that
has to be taken into account.

I would say that, due to that, the standards on IMDB are incredibly
