I didn't know about the PLANET soundtrack LP until I actually saw a
commercial for a record store on TV (I lived on Long Island, so it must
have been a store in NYC) and they actually showed the LP cover and
asked "have you heard the music from "Planet of the Apes?" I think I
bought the album in a Model's in Levittown (sometime around August '68)
and I was disappointed with it when I first played it because I was
expecting bits of dialogue. I was only nine years old and up until
then had only gotten those Disney movie records (like "The Jungle
Book").

dear group, i wanted to share a story with you . it started when i
first saw planet around june 1968 at the loews sharpstown drive in . i
liked it some much i had to find out of they had a soundtrack album th
this great music from the film . back in the day accross the street
from the loews drive in there was a place called globe shopping center
and they sold records so i go in to the record deptment and saw the
planet soundtrack project 3 label it sold for four dollars and 44
cents- what a deal
but back then that was high dollar for a kid that
got an allowance of a quarter a week . so at the time my mom advanced
my the money to get the soundtrack album or back then it was called lp
. from william burge

I wouldn't really recommend that parents let their very young children watch it now but back then things were a little different. My father quickly followed up on my new interest by buying me nearly all of the Megos. Nostalgia kicked in a few years ago when Sideshow started turning out their POTA line and I have nearly all of those. Now I'm just waiting for my Hot Toys Ursus, Gorilla Soldier, and Gorilla Officer.

I still have my Planet of the Apes blueprints. There's between 4 to 6 different ones (villages, the ship etc.) that came in a tube with a T-Shirt, I dont remember how many, but they are enormous. It takes forever to unroll them. I got mine from a memorabilia store in VA that sold Fox stuff. I also got a framed piece that has the blueprints for the disintegrator/reintegrator from the 50's Fly movie..............Joe OBrien

Yes but doesn't bring back fond memories now.

I remember at my local theater the smell of popcorn would hit you the moment you walked into the lobby. And I spend a lot of time in that lobby in the summers of '73 and '74 staring at the POTA One Sheets on display there. You just don't get that strong smell of popcorn at today's multiplexes.

    Fellow simians,
Now that Hot Toys is on the verge of sending out their gorillas in force, we must ask them to bring on their other apes. Only Hot Toys can make the figures that we (especially me) long to have, and I am asking you to write to their customer service to let them know that you are waiting for more of their wonderful apes!! I will just be the happiest of all chimpanzees if Hot Toys will announce the coming of more apes. If they can create a Dr. Zaius with his full Forbidden Zone outfit bearing all the delicious hieroglyphs, well, that will just be so fantastic. They may as well, since their spectacular General Ursus needs him to ride into the Forbidden Zone. But in any case, if Hot Toys can make such spectacular gorillas, what is to stop them from bringing on their chimpanzees and orangutans?

I never grew up with Megos so there is no nostalgia for me. Mego scale is perfect when you don't have that much space. After all, I can easily build a Mego scale stadium but not a 1:6 scale Ape City arena. Sideshow figures hold a special place in my heart though because they are the first action figures I actively pursued purchasing. Although that wasn't that long ago either...probably about just 2 years ago when I found out that there are others out there who are just as fanatical about Planet of the Apes as me.
    Jess.
Kevin--yeah...that Hot Toys gorilla's been out in the Forbidden Zone too long...let his hair grow out too much. But it's just hair--it can be cut and restyled. No biggie.

hahaha wait wait wait i wasnt beating up on hot toys or toyfare jeeez you'll have the group dubb me a hater lol
and as a man size is the last thing i ever wanna argue over.
these last few years have seen many needed improvements in the ape action figures and yes theyre very well made and resemble clearly what apes action figures. and ive spent nearly 750.00 in buying the runs they just never gave me the ohh my gods look at these things.
not like the megos still do. for some reason when i see ppl customise a mego or build a new mego my heart goes pitter patter.

Frankly I think it’s academic but hey – Sideshow did Ursus and a soldier ape so that argument about not doing what Sideshow did ain’t right.

They would do what would sell – they know gorillas sell!

Everything is on PRE SALES Jess and if they don’t pre-sell around enough to cover total costs, they don’t produce!  Isn’t that amazing…NO RISK!

So the Gorillas are covering costs.

That’s why we’d have to really think of sellers coz they ain’t doin’ this for love!

Also you can use Black Acrylic Craft paint to paint and seal the backing OR use Black flexible fusing to seal to the back of the Vinyl. I've used it for full size costumes often. You have to really plan how you're going to sew it though as once holes are there-they're there for good.

That's what I thought. So why use that image when you're creating a poster specifically for a 40th Anniversary showing of the original film?

Not going for any put down. I just saw the image of the "working cover" and for some reason that particular episode came to mind. Must've been the artwork.

Well I'm really uncouth myself as you know. ;-)

But I will ask that everyone remember that this group is to celebrate POTA and our love for it. All the drama is of interest to only a tiny handful and it just turns off everyone else, so please take it offline.

And speaking of love of POTA, today July 13th is the anniversary of Battle opening in NYC and the first time I saw it.

A few weeks earlier, I had seen the Battle poster in the lobby of the Walker Theater under a 'Coming Soon' sign and it looked so damn cool. I was there to see 'The Poseidon Adventure' (the first time I had seen Roddy without the makeup) and asked when Battle would be opening. They told me Friday, July 13th.

I spent the next few weeks counting the days until the film opened. A wait made easier by a trip to Disney World the week prior. (We got back on the 12th.) I remember going bed the night before and trying to fall asleep as fast as possible so morning would come quickly. Sort of like on Christmas Eve. The next morning I ran to get the newspaper to see the ad for the film (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/BattleAd.jpg) and found out there was a second feature playing with Battle, the original 'Planet of the Apes' (which I had only seen once back in 1968). WOW, two Apes of the price of one. I was in POTA heaven.

About 2 weeks later the theater did a marathon of all the films and I got to see them all yet again. But today is a very special memory for me and just wanted to share it with everyone.

When Bill Blake did the makeups for the book signings he did the dark under the eyes and it seemed wrong. But he said that's how it was originally done.

Loved the Dr. Zaius makeup and small write-up.  Amazing to see the photos...the chimps from the original movie had really dark areas around their eyes!

I've been slow chipping in on this topic from a couple of weeks or so back, as I wanted to dig out my old Look-Ins, the junior TV Times. For the week 12-18 Oct 1974, Apes is not on in all areas and those where it is (LWT,Westward and Southern) it starts at 7:55 pm.Then, for the week Nov 30-6 Dec, it's on most areas, but now at 7:25 pm.Does anybody have the relevant TV Times as I recall the earlier time, myself.John, Scrolls.

These days, the very combination of the words "fox" and "films" in
the same sentence is enough to cause intestinal trouble.
