I disagree with James. I still think the Orang
was a female. This has come up before.
Though nothing was established since
it was A. an uncredited role, and B
there was no gender reference in
the script. So even if it was a
female in make up, it may
have be a male part. The
opposite was true in the
new movie where Deep
Roy play Thade's niece.

I don't remember any female Orangutans or Gorillas in any of the

Last time I looked at my signature I was still the Bunkermeister.
Read my Bunkermeister blog to find out why.

Matthew Sotis makes (or used to make) realistic gorilla and chimp figures among others. In Christopher Sausville's book "Planet of the Apes Collectibles" there's a shot on pg 63 of his female gorilla doll in costume. I would scan the image for you but the binding on the book would split if I flattened it out. Anyone else have an image of this?

Did they wear a dress like Zira? Or did they dress differently? Did they look like the male orangutan and gorilla? I don't think there was too much difference between the female chimps and male chimps. Without the clothing difference I think it would have been difficult for humans to determine the difference; at least when they are dressed.

Say...that reminds me. There were a few females in the church scene...but the screen shots are too blurry to ever discern if they were female gorillas or not. I do remember however that their outfits were the standard issue female green outfits and there was a gorilla plum hood on top of that. We never see their faces clearly.
But...since it was a gorilla's funeral and the deceased was a father, I would assume his wife would have participated in the burial rituals.

Yeah, I saw her on Craig Ferguson a week or so ago. She still looks pretty good, but your story only reminds me of what a mystery Fox's DVD of OMYBC is when compared to that excellent laserdisc from the last century. WTF happened there??? So can we conclude all ape females wear essentially the same green outfit

EXCLUSIVE: HUGE PLANET OF THE APES PREQUEL STORY DETAILS!
- By Devin Faraci
- Published 03/12/2010
- News
We've been following the story of Caesar, a prequel to Planet of the Apes,
for almost two years now. We told you that Scott Frank was writing and
directing the film, and then we brought you news that he was off the
project. But Frank leaving Caesar didn't kill it dead - the project is alive and well, and in fact tonight Deadline reports that Fox has hired Rupert Wyatt, director of the little seen Sundance film The Escapist (no relation to Kavalier & Klay) to direct from a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
Now we have some details about the story of Caesar, which is currently called Caesar: Rise of the Apes,
and about the tons of little nods to the original movie that Jaffa and
Silver have put into their script. And about how it surprisingly ties
directly into the original 1968 Planet of the Apes.
Be warned: there are spoilers that follow, although fans of the original five Apes movies will not be too surprised by much of what happens in this film.
Like Scott Frank's version, Caesar: Rise of the Apes
is centered on genetic research. Will is a doctor trying to cure
Alzheimers, a disease that afflicts his father. He's working with
monkeys to create a benign virus that can get into brain tissue and
restore functionality. After his research is shut down he's left with
just one chimp, the child of his most promising subject, and Will
raises him at home. Young Caesar is incredibly intelligent for an ape,
and over time he continues to mutate and evolve, looking less like a
chimp and moving on from sign language to actual speech. Eventually
Caesar ends up leading an army of apes in an uprising just as a
catastrophe strikes mankind.
Some points of interest:
- Caesar: Rise of the Apes is explicitly a prequel to the real Planet of the Apes.
During the course of the script TV newscasts recount the launch of a
space craft called the Icarus, led by a Colonel Taylor, which
eventually disappears while going around the dark side of Mars. While
these aren't the exact same situations from the original film, Planet of the Apes had Charlton Heston playing Colonel Taylor whose ship, the Icarus, crash lands on Earth in the distant future.
-
The script opens with poachers capturing apes in the wild. The scene is
structured to recall the apes capturing humans at the beginning of Planet of the Apes.
- Caesar's mother is named Bright Eyes, which is what Dr. Zira called Colonel Taylor in the original film.
- As Caesar changes his eyes become green; this reflects the green outfits worn by the chimps in Planet of the Apes.
- In Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar led primitive apes in an uprising against man, and the biggest battle took place on a bridge. The same happens in Caesar: Rise of the Apes, except this time the bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
-
There are other name homages. A female scientist is named Stewart,
which was the name of the female Icarus crewmember. Dodge and Landon,
also Icarus crewmembers in the original film, appear as names, but in
very different roles than in Planet of the Apes.
Dodge is a bad guy, in fact. There's a chimp named Cornelia, a play on
Cornelius from the original film, a chimp named Franklin, a play on Apes director Franklin Schaffner , and an orangutan named Maurice, homaging Maurice Evans, who played Dr. Zaius.
- Dodge actually hoses Caesar down in a scene that recalls the 'It's a madhouse!' scene in Planet of the Apes.
-
At one point Caesar is sent to a wild animal park and lives in a monkey
house. There we see that the original film's social structure, where
chimps, orangutans and gorillas have their own strata, is in place.
Caesar manages to unite them all, though.
- By the end of the
script humanity's downfall, which is tied to Caesar's origin, is in
place. Caesar is presented as struggling for freedom, but he's
unwilling to be violent. This makes the ending confused, as the other
apes rampage while Caesar behaves non-violently.
- In the original Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar
makes the other apes leap forward evolutionarily just by existing. Here
there's a more scientific explanation. Also, Caesar's slow mutation
explains why the apes in Planet of the Apes are bigger than and look nothing like modern chimps, orangutans or gorillas.
- The ending is suitably bleak in a traditional Planet of the Apes way, while leaving a big opening for the next chapter. |

I tried to frame by frame that when this
came up the last time. Best I can make
out they're chimps. Maybe they felt the
female gorilla was too dark in the chapel
under a hood to be picked up on film.
Seems nit picky for a few seconds
of screen time, but . . . Then again
they spend a fortune on a matte
shot that's on the screen even less.

Model building, toy soldiers, and I even has some POTA items in the queue.
I dragged the old Hasbro POTA figures out of the attic recently and have

BENEATH is all messed up with missing cues and repeated ones. However alternate and extended cues are heard in some of the films.
I think they just went and overlayed music tracks from the CDs for the isolated scores, but for the re-mixing of the music for the film they did a pseudo stereo re-channeling on the mono stems - a typical and old way of doing things as they did with Chase years ago for the Beta/VHS releases. All they did to update the process is put it through a box to spread it out to 5.1. No wonder they sound like crap. Unlike Paramount's new 5.1 mixes (From mono elements) for the first 3 Friday the 13th films on Blu-ray which have terrific stereo. The music alone has a quality of a 1950's stereo mix (wide).
Once again FOX rears its cheap head.

Exactly! Some of the cues are also different from the film soundtrack and the CDs. One example is in Conquest Just as Caesar is about to clunk the guard after his fake death the music cue starts differently than either of the soundtracks(Film, CD). Its a third version. You know its starts when Don Murray(Breck) says "Yes, its over. Shall we go back to work?. Listen to the first four bars, it has a trombone blatting quarternotes, instead of the more etherial music that starts the cue. Their are other differences to, the training music in ape managment and the training music outside where Caesar learns to mop and wash his hands, that que is very different at the end and middle. It seems they used the original long version stems before they were edited for time to normal stems. All I must say is that their is a hell of alot of good sounding music out their and its Fox who are just lazy and stupid, stupid because they always reveal their laziness with
little things like this just to piss you off and tease you, if you will, by showing little golden nuggets of quality thats never used...John M.

IMHO the answer is that he wasn't there to negotiate - he was there to retaliate. Whether he actually knew the bomb would fry the world to a cinder is debatable, but given the earlier dialogue in Beneath about setting the range of Ape City into the bomb's mechanism, I think his intent was indeed to nuke the Apes, if they invaded the city. It was to be done out of holy conviction. He was only caught in the act of launching the Bomb, or it would have happened with or without witnesses
We'll never really know for sure of course, but one reason I think this is true is that it fits the dystopia theme in Dehn's vision of the series, that the sucessor civilizations - Apes and Mutants - ultimately repeated the cycle that led to the destruction of "paradise" in the first place, through inter-species hatred rather than intra-species hatred. Whether it's ideology, inter-species hatred, or religious passion, it ultimately leads to the same place once the means of destruction exist. Even more so because one of the representatives of the civilization that created the Bomb in the first place - Taylor - ultimately was the one to set it off. The implication was that he fulfilled his destiny. Depressing, yes, but fitting what Zaius said. Unfortunately he too was fulfilling his own of putting emotion ahead of reason - what he accused Man of in the original POTA. If you read the novelization, it's even more obvious that this was the direction Dehn was
going in - I think the quote was something like the unseen narrator saying that "whatever speaks, can murder" (or something like that).
Just my thinking anyway.

I always thought it was some kind of art display,
but since it's in a natural history museum it may
be some dinosaur bone the couldn't make head
or tail of, pun intended. And again, even before the
60's, in movies, anything that isn't killed by radiation
must be mutated into a gigantic monster. My guess is
it was a giant parrot, or an atomic chicken, or something.

No one asked about the claw tonight. The guy
doing the Q & A asked most of the questions. Nothing earthshaking that I
recall. He talked about the use of urathane (sp?) foam to injected in a frame to
create the unique shapes for the ape houses (the outside cage was made from one
of these frames. Talked about using the "Hello, Dolly" sets in "Beneath". I'll
try to remember what all he said tomorrow, or whoever else went can chime in. I
personally asked Creber for an interview and he said he's not doing interviews
because he's writing a book about his career (hope he includes diet tips like
Raquel did). I asked him if he worked on Jacobs' ill-fated "Dune". He said he
didn't though he read every version of the script.
The POTA print was so-so. I've seen better. The
main reason I went was to see "Escape" projected, because "Beneath" was
beautiful in 2007. But they showed the blu-ray (in the Egyptian Theater!). It
looked great but sheesh. I guess there's no good prints of "Escape".
All in all a fun night.

Update on my Caesar countdown site. I've decided not to create a countdown site but rather just use the server, riseoftheplanetoftheapes.com to post any Caesar media coverages I capture from television and post them on the server. Links to the media stuff will only be posted here at pota and potadg.
So the site will look like nothing, just a blank page, with media files in the server with links only available on both pota yahoo groups.
So if there's any Caesar related files such as photos, videos or whatever to post, I'll just be using the server to host them.
I really don't want to get into another website or countdown. By the time Avatar was released, I just about used up all my enthusiasm for hosting websites. But a server just to share whatever comes up is fine. And pretty much serves the same purpose but without all the window dressing.

I admit they had me fooled (not that that's
hard). It started with the CG Lawgiver! I thought, "Why would that be on a
print?" And I started watching and it just looked incredible. No grain, nothing.
But of course it was too good to be true as a film print. It was too good. The
closeup of Zira when she's injected and interrogated gave away the makeup. It's
obvious where the appliance ends and Kim Hunter begins. That's why I'm in no
hurry for the TV show to come to blu-ray. The makeup won't hold up.
But the blu-ray looked incredible on the theater
screen. But it's cheating, it's not seeing a print.

POTA is the SF film CASABLANCA of quotable lines. Thank Michael Wilson for that.
You know, if I had to choose, I'd rather look at a digital projection of the Blu-ray than a mediocre 35mm print of PLANET. Even an archival print directly from the studio is no guarantee of perfection. I know of one showing of a restored print of THE SAND PEBBLES that was shown at Fox that had all sorts of problems. Since motion picture film is really a 19th Century invention, it's getting a little ridiculous to still be showing 35mm prints -- unless they're as good as possible.

There were about 100 people there and about 75 for Escape.
The print for POTA was good, sound was good, I have seen first run movies
that were far worse.
The print for Escape was perfect, it looked brand new. Very shape and
clear.
Sitting in those seats for that long was very difficult. We got there
at about 7 pm and by 10 our butts were flat.

While watching POTA on the big screen, a few thoughts about the back packs
that the Astronauts had came to mind.
They have four people on the ship, but only three backpacks. Did
Stewart not have one? Or did they not bother to take it? There
seemed to be little camping gear, stoves, sleeping bags, and such. Did
they plan on sleeping in the ship each night?
Each backpack was different. They had different configurations to
match the gear in the packs. I did not realize that before seeing it on
the big screen. By the time they get to the small waterfall and pond, they
are down to two backpacks, Taylor and Dodge have theirs but Landon has lost
his.
They did not seem to have much water, and I would have thought a canteen
with pistol belt would have been nice. Carrying a pistol and three
magazines in a backpack is nice for storage, but seemed quite the waste of space
and not easy to get to if you need to shoot something. Also a pistol is a
poor choice, they are really only good for shooting people. A lightweight
.22 rifle would have been better for shooting small game, or maybe a shotgun
with birdshot to get small birds.
