.htmlI believe Rick Baker was getting ready to retire before POTA2001 because he said CGI was killing what he did. Well, he's still doing it (the recent THE WOLFMAN), but it's more and more mixed with CG and I think applied prosthetics is pretty much on its way out. I've said here that if Fox was to do a POTA movie using the old makeup, it would probably be "enhanced" with CGI to make the lips move and such. In fact, that's something that could very well be done to the original films in future "enhanced" versions. What would you think of that?

It's all very convincing. I'm just afraid once we're
down that CG Apes road there's no turning back.
Not to take anything away from Andy. He's the
best! It's just not what it should be. If any movie
should be the last makeup hold out it's POTA!

Those pictures posted yesterday taken in a "forest" seem
to be on to something. A commenter at imdb who seems to be a native posted
today: "("Rise of the Apes") is filming in Robert Burnaby Park this weekend - -
they've been setting up effects for the past two weeks. Lots of fake giant
stumps (perhaps for a redwood forest setting?). The playground has been
repainted, and picnic tables replaced, so that'll likely be in the shot as well.
Apparently there's a shot with the apes coming out of the forest".
So perhaps there will be a big battle in a
redwood forest (hopefully they've learned something from the Ewoks). James
Franco's intense expressions in those shots suggests that his character might
live to be part of the battle. Also today, Fox announced that Franco's film "127
Hrs." will be release on Nov. 5th. Pretty much a one-man show, it's based on the
true story, with Franco playing a guy whose arm gets caught under a rock during
a hike and there's only one way out. Could he be getting an Oscar nomination (or
win) right before "Apes" hits?

I want to make a few things clear. I'm not
sure who posted the other day about Rick Baker retiring because of CGI.
Rick has always embraced, suggested, and experimented with the use of CG in
conjunction with FX make up. His few attempts at retirement had nothing to
do with CG taking over the make up artist's job. After 40 + years of doing
it for a living, it's a love and passion he doesn't want to hate.
2nd--whay all the bashing of the ape make up in POTA 01? The make ups were
and still are GREAT. They are the closest thing to real apes without going
to animatronic heads. The sculpts, paint jobs, and applications are
impeccable. You can't base the quality of all the make ups on just the
female faces. The idea of eyebrows, lipstick, and the hairstyles were not
Rick Baker's doing. He was just following the studio's demands, after all,
they are paying him! When you are hired to do a make up job, you give
designs and ideas, but ultimately, the studio has the last say. Unless you
know make up or even what a real ape looks like, don't bash Rick's
designs.

Chambers' makeup was much better.
But again I love Rick. Loved "The Grinch" and "The Wolfman" makeups just to name a couple.

Except that in this new one the apes are just
getting started and they don't have time to evolve a look. That was the problem
with "Conquest", that they had the Chambers look too soon and they seemed like,
well, people in ape makeup. As it is, it looks like Caesar grows through
the movie. In those pictures with Freida they are looking down on him; in the
forest pictures he and Franco are looking eye to eye. So far it only sounds like
two intelligent apes, Caesar and (Alpha?). How it works out remains to be seen.
Do they lead a rebellion of wild apes and then later Caesar knows how to create
more like himself? If the apes are the result of experiments instead of an
overall mutation from radiation it could get tricky. How do the other apes get
like Caesar?

Today these writers feel they are doing something better but all they do is write themselves into a corner of stupidity. The older films simply skirted the main issues and dealt with the storyline at hand - the audience was allowed to fill in the gaps. For this very reason the stories have grown their own mythology, inspiring debates and discussions.
It was never stated how apes evolved. Since they were already that way in CONQUEST it wasn't radiation. As a kid I just assumed it was a by-product of the same virus that killed dogs and cats - causing the death of one but mutational jump in the development of simians. Even though it was stated in CONQUEST the virus was brought back to earth by "one of the astronauts" I also felt it was actually brought into being by Zira & Cornelius, as carriers - setting the stage for everything to begin. In the 20 years between ESCAPE and CONQUEST apes would change with each generation allowing a much more plausible venue.

The movies and music were a product of their times{the zeigest} where the public filled in the gaps and created discussion and thought. Their are smart movies but the executives want explosions not expositions and the dumbing down of our culture is the result or their products or a reflection of it. What does that Beatle or Dylan or Progressive lyric mean. Those times you had to write under the radar of censors and it created a wonderfull creative artistic community. Now everything is out their, its boring and discussion and interpretation have all but died. Films of course were subject to the same scrutiny. Writers must write smart exspositions and the studios must take notice,[wishfull thinking] and let the audience figure it out. They audience might not be as dumb or bored as the film studios assume. We might just have to realize that the human artistic age is starting to get into a Dark age and we might just have to be thankfull we saw and heard
some great art..JOHN m...

I've forgotten about this -- because I spend very little time thinking about one of the worst disasters in American history prior to 9/11... of course, I'm talking about POTA2001 -- but there is, I believe, an example of CGI used with the Baker prosthetic makeup in that horrible, eminently forgettable piece of celluloid dreck.
Here's a couple screen captures of Attar. The bottom photo, where the mouth is so wide open in a roar, has got to be CGI enhancement.
This is the kind of thing I think it would be interesting to see done with the original films -- in just the area of their mouths --, though I'm not sure it's really worth the doing.
-- Rory
P.S.
Yeah, I'm the guy who told that I recall Baker saying he was thinking of retiring before doing POTA2001. It was in some featurette on the DVD, I think, but what of it? Also, I think for the most part the makeup is well applied in POTA2001, but in my opinion the design isn't the greatest, but in fairness to Baker and his crew, they were terribly rushed.

Probably it's an earlier script ("Dr. Stewart" is

Lithgow says they've been getting rewrites during filming. What the

Here's a link to a Film Score Monthly thread about
who should do the music for the new "Apes". Who should? Michael Giacchino (who
did the rebooted "Star Trek" movie) comes to mind, and he's said he grew up a
fan of the "Apes" TV show. With all the Peter Jackson alumni working on it, it's
easy to fill in the blank with Howard Shore ("Lord of the Rings") or James
Newton Howard ("KIng Kong"). Maybe these folks are out of Fox's price range. But
now's the time to have fun and speculate. Probably the announcement won't come
until next year.

The Digital Bits is running a series they did for
a book in 2003 on the making of the DVD special editions of the "Alien" movies.
It's not "Apes" but it does shed some light on doing these things for Fox. The
series will continue all week and eventually they'll update it with the
forthcoming "Alien" franchise blu-rays. Like "Apes", "Alien" is currently being
prequelized. This time by the original director, Ridley Scott, which should be
interesting.

Have you seen UP, James? It was scored by Michael Giacchino and there's a part in the film where they walk through a canyon with a pack of dogs and the music evokes APES and I thought it was very good.
Horner doesn't seem to me to have the sensibilities for an APES movie.

This script might work depending on how it's told.
I kinda have a problem with a chemical that kills all the humans, changes the
apes, and can be passed on by Caesar's blood. As the Church Lady would say, "How
conveeeeenient!". But I guess it's a quick way to get them where they have to
go. Sounds like a great gig for Lithgow, playing the "Charly" role (the famous
sci-fi flick that also came out in '68).

I'd like Howard Shore, please. I'm not big on
collecting soundtracks but I have his "Lord of the Rings" and "The Fly" and I
think between the two of them he's got the new "Ape" vibe covered
(action-adventure with the world at stake + ambitious science that reaches too
far). He's at home on the battlefield and in the lab.
I like Giacchino, too. I've been a fan since
"Alias".
John Williams would be interesting (though it
wouldn't happen) since he worked uncredited on J. Lee Thompson's "Guns of
Navarone" and with Arthur Jacobs ("Goodbye Mr. Chips", "Tom Sawyer"). But
I don't know if he'd be a good fit with "Apes".

Actually.... it would be kind of fitting if Williams did it -- though I very much doubt he will -- because he scored so much of Fox Sci-Fi, the Irwin Allen stuff for TV, and it would be like a conduit back to the Fox of the sixties, which he's the last survivor of.
Although I'm not a big Williams fan, I can't deny he knows how to write a score and I think he'd do a good job with a new APES.
Someone else mentioned Joel Goldsmith. He doesn't seem to work much, or else I never see the films he score. I'd be surprised if he got the gig.

On page 39 of the script there is a TV news report about Taylor and his crew preparing to be launched. So since this film takes place in contemporary times, it can't be the same Taylor from the original film who was launched in 1972. Thus it's not a prequel but a reboot.

You see they think no one would notice. This is typical of bad writing that is considered good these days. Having the film simply take place in the late 60 early 70's would have solved this probelm - but would have added to the budget, so they just flew with it and are patting themselves on the back say, "look how clever we are!"
Typical.

OK, I've had about all of this that I can stand....
What Fox is doing is a reboot of the POTA franchise because the 2001 debacle left them with no place to go -- it was that much of a creative disaster.
But... and this is a very BIG BUT... Fox is also rebooting the original POTA series by doing what is a prequel to the original film. Whether you can except that or not -- THAT'S WHAT IT IS!
There are dated elements in the original 1968 such as exactly what James mentions -- the 1972 date on the clock at the beginning of the movie -- that HAVE TO BE REVISED!
You can't seriously expect that Fox is going to try and re-launch this franchise and still have in this new movie that an interstellar flight was launched in 1972! I think to expect them to adhere to that "continuity" is juvenile.
I mean really.... let's grow up. None of this threatens anyone's beloved conception of the original five-film series. This movie is a reboot of the franchise and a prequel to the original film -- with some revisions -- namely, a new timeline! I'm so certain of this that I'm already preparing, less than a year from now, for my "I told you so's" to James.

On page 39 of the script there is a TV news report about Taylor and his crew preparing to be launched. So since this film takes place in contemporary times, it can't be the same Taylor from the original film who was launched in 1972. Thus it's not a prequel but a reboot.
I'm so certain of this that I'm already preparing, less than a year from now, for my "I told you so's" to James.

.html.html Here's a little interesting tid bit.
The ape in Conquest isn't called "Aldo" the ape is called "Otto."
It's the scene where Caesar calls the guards "Lousy Human Bastards." When you put on the english subtitles, the name given is "Otto."
