.html Hi Everyone
I need a favour. I have been collecting the 12 inch apes for many years and now am starting to try and make my own. I am looking for a copy of the Rebel Ape head. The one that is Caeser/Roddy chimp dressed like Che Guavarra(?)
I have been promised a copy of the face a few times but keep being let down. I wondered if there were any kind POTA fans who could do me a quick plaster copy of the face and I would of course pay the PP. I want a copy as it is a superb sculpt of Roddy's ape face and would be ideal for my Galen and Escape Cornelius figures.
Hope some one takes pity LOL

John Lithgow is talking about the new Apes on his
Twitter. He loves the director, stoked about Brian Cox being in the cast, they
shot until 1 AM on 7/9 -10, 7/5 was indeed the 1rst day of filming, and he
accidently called Freida Pinto "Leila". Sounds like the actors are enjoying this
"FX" movie. John says, "I love my role in this movie! Am I wrong?"

.html.html That was one of the episodes I remember most. Mind you I haven't seen The Six Million Dollar Man since I was a kid so watching the entire thing on DVD would be like new to me. With only a few faint memories on the episodes. But it was one of my favorite TV shows growing up.
Really looking forward to the DVD release and hopefully Bluray.

you know why. They really jumped
the shark with that one. There's a
good Venture Bros. about that one.

The newly announced Tom Felton (the bad kid Malfoy
in the "Harry Potter" movies) is already in Vancouver to shoot "Rise of the
Apes" . I think the "ape sanctuary" scenes he's in is where the apes revolt,
kind of like Ape Management in "Conquest". Don't know what's happened to our
main characters at that point, the ones that raised Caesar. Lithgow says he's
done by the end of the month. Shooting is scheduled to conclude Sept. 17.

I was the consultant for 7 year on all I.T.C. product for A&E North American releases. The horror of doing that was dealing with those who were in control at a company called New Video who actually made the choices for A&E. At the time it was a company filled with a low level of knowledge staff, one in a primary position who got her job knowing a high ranking person at A&E. She was an out and out idiot. The rest of the staff were equally as brain damaged knowing nothing either on the technical end, or marketing venue, of home video. The Year 1 of SPACE masters were never inspected and were received by New Video prior to me coming aboard. When I was hired it was by a man who was left a lot to deal with due mainly to an
unproductive staff, as I mentioned above. He was the person who, while he worked there, allowed me to investigate and deal with both the UK and L.A. branches of the then Carlton , the company who owned the rights to the catalog. Carlton would later be bought by Granada . For a short time I actually had a direct connection with Gerry Anderson - and still have his personal cell number but found him to be a money hungry prick that would not let go of
material in his personal domain unless the price was right. I understood this to be little more than a desperate ploy for income due to his failure at a producer since divorcing his wife and partner Sylvia Anderson years prior. My dealings with her were of the utmost professional. Unlike her co-producer ex-husband she was Lady, and kind person - truly his best half.
The same tired bonus materials have bounced back and forth from every release since. Due to Gerry's rotten tainted personality he has made enemies with the show's stars, Martin and Barbara
who were unwilling to deal with any the previous video releases. I was in contact with their attorney in hope to procure their services for a 30Th Anniversary Edition crashed into a brick wall due to stated monies that were owed to them by Gerry in the past. Much of SPACE's problems and mishandling have been due to Gerry's need of cash, writing off the series, as well as others for quick cash. After that it was thrown into a package of products which came under the mercy of a
failing I.T.C. and bounced from company to company who either didn't know what they had buried in a library of product no one really cared about within the industry.
NETWORK DID NOT REMASTER the series. The restoration and remastering was started by Granada , only the 5.1 re-mix was produced by NETWORK. Originally the work was supposed to be partly backed by A&E but they backed out when I first proposed a 30Th Anniversary Edition. (They later did re-package the Series for a 30TH Anniversary Edition but didn't use the new masters. They also had to pay me for my written ideas for that release under pain of legal action.) NETWORK picked up the UK option and released the series as we know it.
When Granada originally did the work they struck 2 different masters, one 1.33:1 and 1.85:1 the latter when transferred was done with tilt -meaning each scene was re-configured and re-centered from top to bottom to present the best way and considering what part of the image would be shown/and cut due to the 1.85:1 ratio.
It will be interesting to see which will be presented by A&E. They should have both with a viewer option in the menu.
The overall quality should be stunning -but I don't expect much in terms of additional bonus material. The packaging, if what is shown on Amazon is correct, is already disappointing, as is usual with how A&E has handled the product. They still can't understand how stupid their newly designed logo is. Why they don't simply go back to the original is just bad taste and judgment.

This one is for Mr. Digital Cinema:
A&E Home Entertainment is going to build on the success of their recent (and awesome) Prisoner Blu-ray release by bowing Space: 1999 - The Complete Season 1 on Blu-ray this Fall! SRP is $99.95 for the 6-disc set, but Amazon has it for just $69.99.

OK, since Veetus just wants to fool around and no one else is responding, I'll tell you what the "POTA Connection" is with PLANET '68 and the new movie.
It's Brian Cox. (I thought he was older than John Lithgow, but Lithgow is actually one year older.)
Cox played Trotsky in the 1971 film NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA -- which was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner!
(See attached photo from film of Cox as Trotsky.)
I think that's a good omen for the new movie. I hope it is, anyway.

Well, I'll be! Not bad for an actor you can't
stand. He was also the first film Hannibal Lector in "Manhunter" before Anthony
Hopkins has his way with it. And most important, he was in something called
"Shades of Greene". These days maybe THAT'S a good omen.

After 19 years I have decided to stop reprinting
individual issues and try to improve the appearance overall
by compiling the old issues into new book
formats
So we will be taking the original 44 issues and
putting them in 6 books
(Issue #45 onwards are in the new book
format)
I thought it might be nice to showcase POTA artwork
that is new and original and wanted to see if anyone would like to be part of
this
Of course my favorite ape artists include those
such as Neil Foster, Graham Hill, Maz Adams etc
If anyone is interested in contributing to the
front cover let me know
so in other words I am looking for 6 new pieces of
artwork
thanks

A Vancouverian took some pics of the "Rise of the
Apes" outdoor green screen setup. Reportedly the film climaxes with a battle at
the Golden Gate Bridge (like the "bridge" battle in "Conquest"). This setup
looks like the one used to do the Golden Gate Bridge scene in "X-Men: The Last
Stand". For those who have or can rent the two-disc version of that film,
there's an extra called "Anatomy of A Scene". This is about the GGB scene (the
mutants divert the Bridge so it goes to Alcatraz) and shows probably how they
will shoot the scene in "Rise".

Yes, I can tell the difference between an ape and
a Predator. But once again, I think this is reflective of how Fox is thinking
and relates to "Rise of the Apes". Comic-Con has been going a couple days and
Robert Rodriguez confirms that Fox is interested in a "Predators 2" (not to be
confused with "Predator 2"). Now, "Predators" received a decidedly mixed
reaction and has not taken the box office by storm. So far it's made $ 81
million world wide, but it only cost $ 40 million and with little advertising.
Anyway, it's perceived as a poor showing for an established franchise so the
idea of a sequel might seem a surprise to some.
But Rodriguez says they were just "testing the
water" with this first one and are now going to go bigger. And that seems to be
the plan with "Rise of the Apes". The apes reportedly don't get busy until the
end so it will be the same situation, and then the sequels will be ape fests.
But this news suggests to me that Fox is very forgiving and intent on
reestablishing these franchises. So even if this first "Apes" isn't "Inception"
level, they'll cut it some slack.

The thing Fox shouldn't cut any slack with is the script! THE SCRIPT IS THE THING, and worth more than any huge budget SFX.
"The apes reportedly don't get busy until the end so it will be the same situation, and then the sequels will be ape fests."
This kind of comment bothers me, because it's so typical of too many APES fans that seem only interested in APES doing violence -- that seems all that POTA is to them. I say, "what about characters you care about (simian or otherwise), dialogue that isn't inane, and satire and allegory that's truly clever?"
Mark my words, if there's going to be a new series of APES films, and it quickly becomes just "action adventures of the apes" then it will SUCK!

This video opens with the Golden Gate Bridge scene
in "X-Men 3". Reportedly the early script for "Rise of the Apes" includes a
battle on the Golden Gate Bridge. I wouldn't be surprised if Fox chose San
Francisco as the location because they have the elements from this scene (this
movie only came out 3 years ago). Unfortunately I couldn't find the making of on
youtube but the green screen setup for "Rise" looks pretty much the same as the
one for this used to film the people and the cars, and then everything else is
CG elements (they DID film actual bridge models, it's not all just
computers). People aren't allowed to film on the Bridge anyway, and even aerial
footage has to be shot from a certain distance. I may be way off but this
footage might be the same elements they use for the apes' climactic
attack.

Before I get to my response to this, I was just wondering if anyone else here has Google Earth and has looked at the Mammoth Studios facility up in Vancouver? It's one big sound stage, surrounded by "alot" of nothing, but I guess they need the room and it gets the job done.
I've not seen X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and have no desire to, but I have seen Fox's WOLVERINE and so I can pretty much guess what kind of CGI "look" this new movie will have, which leads me to this comment on what Veetus says....
I HATE DVD EXTRAS THAT "DECONSTRUCT" THE SFX OF A MOVIE!!!!!
There, I screamed it!
You know, Home Video, DVDs and Blu-rays are wonderful things for the film lover to have, but it used to be that film's had "magic." Unless you were really into it and knew how to find out the information, you had little clue as to how movie SFX were done -- AND THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE! I love seeing behind-the-scenes photos, and outtakes and such, but I really couldn't care less -- for the most part -- how most SFX scenes were done. I don't like the "illusion" ruined, which is pretty much what these "Anatomy of a Scene" featurettes do. Also, generally, they're incredibly pretentious as to how "cool" it all is and how cleaver the filmmakers are. More often than not, these featurettes are things I never bother to look at when I rent a DVD, and if I do give them a look, I usually bailout after the first minute or two. They're mostly self-congratulatory junk,
and can actually be quite laughable when the movie itself stinks! I'll bet -- if there are any on the DVD -- that the "Making of" featurettes for BATTLEFIELD EARTH are a real hoot!
I'm glad I was only eight when I first saw PLANET. I remember that for the longest time I had no idea how the makeup was done, and in fact, I don't recall seeing it applied to anyone until after BENEATH came out. While I often think how great it would have been to have DVDs back in 1968, I'm actually glad I had that "know nothing" period of no "Making of" featurettes. Of course, there was one made in 1968 on PLANET's makeup, but unless you were in the right place at the right time to see it -- you never saw it, and I never saw it until 1976 when I bought a 16mm print of it!
What's your opinion, Veetus?

My opinion is I love "making of" features,
especially the good ones. I think it's great that it gives some attention to the
hard working people behind the scenes. Some of the stuff available on DVDs is a
treasure trove. As with anything else a lot is mediocre. But when they put in
the effort, some of the DVD extras are better than the movies (such as the
POTA2001 stuff). People don't have to watch them if they don't want to spoil the
"magic", but it's nice that they're there. Usually I only watch the ones for
films or filmmakers I like. And internet reviews are good for determining what
extras are worth watching. Usually the "FX" extras are my least favorite
because they've become the same old same old these days, people in front of
green screens. But it does give me a lot more appreciation for CG FX. There's a
lot more to it than people think.

else here has Google Earth and has looked at the Mammoth Studios facility up in
Vancouver? It's one big sound stage, surrounded by "alot" of nothing, but
I guess they need the room and it gets the job done.
I've not seen X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and have no desire to, but I have seen
Fox's WOLVERINE and so I can pretty much guess what kind of CGI "look" this new
movie will have, which leads me to this comment on what Veetus

You know, Home Video, DVDs and Blu-rays are wonderful things for the film
lover to have, but it used to be that film's had "magic." Unless you were
really into it and knew how to find out the information, you had little clue as
to how movie SFX were done -- AND THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE! I love
seeing behind-the-scenes photos, and outtakes and such, but I really couldn't
care less -- for the most part -- how most SFX scenes
were done. I don't like the "illusion" ruined, which is pretty much
what these "Anatomy of a Scene" featurettes do. Also, generally, they're
incredibly pretentious as to how "cool" it all is and how cleaver the
filmmakers are. More often than not, these featurettes are things I
never bother to look at when I rent a DVD, and if I do give them a look, I
usually bailout after the first minute or two. They're mostly
self-congratulatory junk, and can actually be quite laughable when the movie
itself stinks! I'll bet -- if there are any on the DVD -- that the "Making
of" featurettes for BATTLEFIELD EARTH are a real hoot!
I'm glad I was only eight when I first saw PLANET. I remember that
for the longest time I had no idea how the makeup was done, and in fact, I
don't recall seeing it applied to anyone until after BENEATH came
out. While I often think how great it would have been to have DVDs back in
1968, I'm actually glad I had that "know nothing" period of no "Making
of" featurettes. Of course, there was one made in 1968 on PLANET's makeup,
but unless you were in the right place at the right time to see it -- you never
saw it, and I never saw it until 1976 when I bought a 16mm print of
it!

Some are fascinating like "Coraline" explaining the stop motion process....but Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" which I thought was plodding and boring and pointless and irritating...the features just exposed how much it was all fake.....90% of the time, the actors were wearing green standing among green and looking at green tennis balls......

I wonder if the Boris Karloff movie "The Ape" had
anything to do with the POTA episode "The Surgeon". In "The Ape", Karloff plays
Dr. Adrian, who pretends he's an ape. In "The Surgeon", Galen is an ape who
pretends he's a doctor and takes the name "Dr. Adrian". I'm just

If anyone is interested in contributing to the
front cover let me know
so in other words I am looking for 6 new pieces of
artwork
thanks

I liked "Inception". Why did it SUUUUUUCK? But I was referring more to it's box office status at the moment.
It was just a hodgepodge of stuff. It's supposed to be clever and have some meaning, but only the director/writer knows what that is. I found it uninteresting and boring. If it wasn't so loud at times, I'd have slept through half of it.
For the record -- thought THE MATRIX was crap, too, and didn't think THE DARK KNIGHT was anything great.

Well, in John Lithgow's Twitter account that I
linked he said that on July 9th they got a "beautiful rewrite" of a father-son
scene. Lithgow seems happy with the scenes and the director. That's all we can
go on for now. The writers are also producers so maybe that helps.

The
thing Fox shouldn't cut any slack with is the script! THE SCRIPT IS THE
THING, and worth more than any huge budget SFX.
"The apes reportedly don't get busy until the end so it will
be the same situation, and then the sequels will be ape fests."
This kind of comment bothers me, because it's so typical of too many APES
fans that seem only interested in APES doing violence -- that seems all that
POTA is to them. I say, "what about characters you care about (simian or
otherwise), dialogue that isn't inane, and satire and allegory that's truly
clever?"
Mark my words, if there's going to be a new series of APES films, and it
quickly becomes just "action adventures of the apes" then it will SUCK!

Screw the "hard working people behind the scenes." They're supposed to be behind the scenes and you're not supposed to think about them. You're supposed to suspend your disbelief and just watch the movie -- which is also why the still frame button is a bad thing for the "magic" of the movies. But this leads me to something else I hate about modern movies -- the end credit roll. They are ridiculous now with these eight-minute-plus end credits these days. When you see the running times for movies now it's a lie because the last few minutes a just credits. Who cares? You want to find that information, go to IMDB. I like it when movies just end with "THE END" and a cast roll.

I agree 100%, Rory.
I will occasionally watch them, as I did over the weekend with the
ALICE IN WONDERLAND Blu-ray. But in that case, the whole movie
screamed CG SFX, and I was actually curious how some of it was done.
In most cases, it's best to avoid them, or you find out just how much
of what you love about a movie never existed. The amount of green
screen used in everyday scenes these days is mind-boggling and a
little pathetic. In a new movie, if you see people eating in a
restaurant, odds are that it was filmed in a green screen room with
a handful of people and a couple of tables. All the rest is CG. It
oftentimes looks it, but sometimes it doesn't, and while it's cool to
see that they got away with it in those cases, it also ruins future
viewings for me.

Some of the stuff available on DVDs is a treasure trove. As with anything else a lot is mediocre. But when they put in the effort, some of the DVD extras are better than the movies (such as the POTA2001 stuff). People don't have to watch them if they don't want to spoil the "magic", but it's nice that they're there. Usually I only watch the ones for films or filmmakers I like. And internet reviews are good for determining what extras are worth watching. Usually the "FX" extras are my least favorite because they've become the same old same old these days, people in front of green screens. But it does give me a lot more appreciation for CG FX. There's a lot more to it than people think.

And how does knowing all that enhance watching the movie again? Does it help you "get into" the fantasy of the thing -- which is why the movie exists in the first place? NO, IT DOES NOT!

The people who make the movies sure spend a lot of money trying to tell you how magical they are -- even when they're not. How many movies do we see promoted as if they were the Second Coming?
If you have a really good restaurant meal, is it enhanced by going back into the kitchen and asking the chef to show you exactly how it was made?
You know, Spielberg doesn't do commentary tracks for this very reason. Kubrick used to destroy all his sets, blueprints and costumes after filming was completed, and all outtakes and unused footage later on. Gee, I wonder why?

I don't sit through the credits -- I'm out the door as soon as the narrative ends -- unless I want to see where it was shot or something.
But, I don't see how everyone behind the scenes of a movie deserves a screen credit at the end. Their involvement often isn't that essential to the final product, and in the long run, "Who cares?"
I produce a product every work day, but my name isn't on it, and I don't want it to be. Who cares?

And Ellen Page... saw her in not only INCEPTION this weekend, but also on Blu-ray in WHIP IT. Now I'm kind of Paged out.

.html.html Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, says he has begun filming Rise of the Apes, a prequel to the popular Planet of the Apes sci-fi movies, and also finished shooting a movie with Twilight's Ashley Greene.
"I've just started shooting Caesar, Rise of the Apes, which is the Planet of the Apes prequel, which I'm mega, mega excited about," Felton said. "It's a project that I've been really passionate about for a long time."

Who cares?

For me a good commentary on the movie sound track is very helpful.
Sometimes I don't understand the view point of the director or what the story is
about and a good commentary can enhance my understanding of the picture.
It can explain the intent of the movie and point out subtle elements that I
simply may have missed. It can also tie together disjointed elements that
are not obvious in the movie that I may have missed.
Outtakes can be fun if they are from a comedy particularly. Watching
the actor goof up a funny line can be amusing. Other deleted scenes
sometimes fill in gaps in the movie that were cut out to make the movie flow
better or just make it shorter and I like seeing those.
Watching how they did the movie is interesting, I know generally, how the
blue screen / green screen stuff works and seeing it on a particular movie is
sometimes interesting. Watching them make the models of the monster /
spacecraft / mountain can be fascinating too.
I collect toy solders and it is nice to have the original blueprints / sets
/ and such to work from when making models for display.
I think most of those who destroy everything after the movie is over are
simply ego maniacs who don't want their work tampered with or scrutinized too
closely.

knowing how it's done but getting into the fantasy of a movie. If not, I
couldn't enjoy POTA. I knew how the makeup was done a long time ago. And that
there's really no statue in front of Heston.
It's called suspension of disbelief and I have

Well, that's true. Those scenes in the new "King Kong" where they
land on the island...shot in a parking lot. Even Peter Jackson was surprised
how well they could create ocean with CG, and that was after he had done "Lord
of the Rings". But there is a shot of dolphins swimming next to the ship. I
was sure those were CG but they are real. They did shoot some actual footage
of the boat in the ocean, second unit stuff.
And how does knowing all that enhance watching the movie again? Does
it help you "get into" the fantasy of the thing -- which is why the movie
exists in the first place? NO, IT DOES NOT!
And that's my point, lost as it is on Veetus.

Movies aren't "magic", they're the work of a lot of people. You
can choose to watch the "behind the scenes" after seeing the movie or not
watch them at all. But I think they're a good thing for those who are
interested.
The people who make the movies sure spend a lot of money trying to tell you
how magical they are -- even when they're not. How many movies do we see
promoted as if they were the Second Coming?
If you have a really good restaurant meal, is it enhanced by going back

I don't get it. Do they all have fragile egos or something? They need a screen credit at the end of a movie to show others they worked on it? Sounds like the people who work in the film industry are all dipshits!
I wonder how all the "little people" who worked behind the scenes on THE WIZARD OF OZ, or even, dare I say, PLANET OF THE APES ('68) felt when they got no acknowledgement at the end of the movie. Jerry Maren and Felix Silla must have been devastated!
No, this explanation is just silly.
The reason why we have so ponderous and annoying a credit roll at the end of movies these days is because the studio system is gone, and these behind-the-scenes people aren't steadily employed at a studio anymore, they're all independent contractors, so they demand the screen credit to help get them another job. That's all.... and that's why I ignore end credits -- I'm not going to be hiring these people.

Overall the film did well with an estimated $500 million dollar payday at the boxoffice.

I think belly aching is why the internet was invented.
Anyway, I think most DVD featurettes and commentary tracks are worthless and, yes, they're easy to ignore, but think about what they add to the costs of the DVD. In fact, the studios are cutting down on all this extras stuff because of the current slump in sales. A lot of Blu-rays I rent of current films are surprisingly "bare bones."
As far as the long end credit rolls.... they too are easily ignorable, but my objection is that they make movie running times a big lie. When you're going to a movie now and you see the running time -- just subtract ten minutes -- it's closer to the truth.
I'm sure that whatever becomes the official running time for RISE OF THE APES, will actually be at least 12 minutes less. With all the CG work this movie is going to need, you're gonna have a very long end credits.

If you get them from Netflix, many of those are discs created
specifically for rental. A lot of the Netflix discs have no extras.
The studios started doing this to encourage people to buy the
DVDs/Blu-rays.

Now it's up to Aaron Sims to bring us that (Chambers) ape classic look back.
With both these elements back, it would be enjoyable for me to sit through this movie for a couple of hours.
It's like that old saying, if it ain't broken, don't fix it.
One of the things that made the ape classics so apealing was the look of the apes.
And not that freak show that Burton and Baker came up with. Just my opinion.
