So the role was given to David Oyelowo. I would have prefered Chiwetel Ejiofor who was in "2012" and just recently "SALT."
That guy's a great actor. Intense like Heston, Murray and Franciscus.
That guy made "2012" go from cheesy to interesting and fun to watch just due to his acting.
Although I've never seen a David Oyelowo film, so he could be just as great for the role.
Who knows?

At the very start he was mentioned then dissapeared. I guess it was just a rumor like everything else. If im wrong please somebody show us. Take care..John M.

Joe Jaffa said Don Cheadle was up for the role of
a scientist. I guess it didn't work out.
I saw David Oyelowo in "The Last King of
Scotland". I dunno, he was good. But Forest Whitaker owned that movie.
Funny that they named the corporate stooge
Jacobs, when Arthur Jacobs had to go up against the Fox powers to get POTA made.
They should've named the main character Jacobs.
By the way, the main character is named Will
Rodman. Is that supposed to be a nod to Roddy (though his name was Roderick)?
"Roddy! The Rodman! Rodster! Roood!"

Look pretty great to me Al.
I thought about hanging a proj.
but in the end it just wasn't as
practical as I thought. I wanted
the room set up sideways with
a screen framed over the fireplace.
But with a ceiling fan ensconced in
middle of the ceiling where I had to
mount it was to far for a short throw
and right at the edge of a regular
projector. It would have been tough
to keep the pic in the frame and not
over the edges of the brick of the fire
place. Someday I'll have the right space.

I had to get rid of half a trashcan full of
Ultra Cal 30 when I moved. It's not expensive,
but what a waste! It's just not practical to run foam
these days. I have all I can handle learning the new
DAWs and studio gear. I long for the days when you just
pressed Record and let loose, but again, not very practical.
If I can ever get used to the computer stuff and non-liner editing
it will be worth it though. The past couple years though I feel
like
a guy trying to keep the dam from breaking with all his fingers and
toes.
Reading the manuals on these things is like a set of phonebooks for
the
five boroughs in Manhattan only not as interesting. Any engineers out
there?

Look pretty great to me Al.
I thought about hanging a proj.
but in the end it just wasn't as
practical as I thought. I wanted
the room set up sideways with
a screen framed over the fireplace.
But with a ceiling fan ensconced in
middle of the ceiling where I had to
mount it was to far for a short throw
and right at the edge of a regular
projector. It would have been tough
to keep the pic in the frame and not
over the edges of the brick of the fire
place. Someday I'll have the right space.

Funny that they named the corporate stooge Jacobs, when Arthur Jacobs had to go up against the Fox powers to get POTA made. They should've named the main character Jacobs.
By the way, the main character is named Will Rodman. Is that supposed to be a nod to Roddy (though his name was Roderick)? "Roddy! The Rodman! Rodster! Roood!"
Maybe it's supposed to be more Rod Serling than Roddy McDowall, still I'm not too crazy about the suggestiveness of "Rodman" anything, but this is about a guy who's messing around with DNA.
By the way, Jacobs actually fought the Fox board over there insistence on more APES movies until he finally said enough and sold them the thing, and of course what a great job Fox has done with APES since!

Yeah, my mother was reading a book by Obama's brother-in-law and told me he says that when they were kids they loved the POTA movies, but I questioned her further about it and now she says it only mentions that they went to see a "Planet of the Apes sequel" once at a drive-in. My mother is in her seventies, she exaggerates.
But nearly everyone of "our" generation likes the POTA movies, I'll bet even the Pres.

They loose resolution and brightness and black levels begin to fall apart. You can get, I think, a better lens that can control lighting and aspect ratio better. That would be in order if you want to go larger. Remember quality not quantity. Like I said before im not totally famialiar with your unit but I do know the technology.. Take care, John M.

Like everything else based on digital technology it keeps getting better (or can be better) everyday. All you have to do is look into different lenses and if your lense can be swapped out for a good anamorphic one and get a stewart or da-lite gray screen with about 1.5 magnification in light
foot lamberts and your all set. The only way to get better without breaking the bank is to get a 1080p projector(from the same company if you like) then you really will go Ape over the picture. I should stop going of ape topic, even though your finding a way to enjoy apes more, before I get gorted. Take care again and dont forget to get your set calibrated when the time is right. It will make your set look like a double the price unit, trust me....John M.

article about what to expect on the "Space: 1999" blu rays. Sounds like a good
quality picture and decent extras. Hits stores Nov. 2nd, the same day as the
"Bridge on the River Kwai" blu-rays.
And where's the "Space: 1999" reboot? They should
do a movie about what the space program was really like in 1999 and call it
"Space: 1999".

Here's another of my State of the Fox reports that
don't deal specifically with POTA but with where their heads are at in the
studio that owns it's ass. OK, "Predators" not so good. But according to the
filmmakers Fox backed off and let them make their movie. So I'll call that a
misfire but with good intentions.
"Alien" prequels... got the original director
back, Ridley Scott. I'm looking forward to that.
And then there's "X-Men", Fox's only franchise
that has stayed popular enough to continue throughout the last decade. But still
the more recent ones have disappointed and contributed their share to Fox's rep
as a bad steward of franchises. And now the new one "X-Men: First Class" is
coming out the same month as "Rise of the Apes" (for those who think "Apes" has
a tight schedule, this one STARTS shooting Aug. 31st and comes out before
"Apes").
So has Fox turned a corner with "X-Men" as
hopefully they have with "Apes"? Well, producer Bryan Singer has just made some
comments and I can say I'm intrigued. It's a, wait for it, prequel set in the
'60's with a feel of the James Bond of the period. That sounds pretty different.
And I like the director, Matthew Vaughn ("Kick Ass", "Layer Cake"). So what I'm
hearing of this and what I'm hearing of "Rise of the Apes" gives me hope. Maybe
some day, in the not too distant future you may find yourself saying under your
breath, "fox rocks...". Maybe you won't even believe you said it. Was it the
wind?

Hollywood's embrace of brand names goes beyond
movies based on other movies, TV shows, comic books, video games
and cartoon characters. They are also movie-izing playthings. "Monopoly" is
in the works and Universal is spending $ 200 million on a "Battleship" movie (as
in, "You sunk my..."). So here's a funny video on the phenomenon by John August,
who has written his share of Tim Burton movies (on topic!).

This came to mind the other day; that it's been over thirty years now since the start of "Home Video" and that last November was the 30th Anniversary of PLANET first appearing on VHS and Beta (BENEATH had been released a couple years earlier) -- as if that's anything to celebrate. What I mean is, of course it's great that we've been able to watch our favorite movies anytime we want over the past three decades, but those early transfers were, in a word, primitive. And if you complain about what DVDs and Blu-rays cost today, check out the attached scan of a flyer I've kept all these years announcing the release of PLANET and a couple other 20th Century-Fox films on cassette back in Nov. 1979, and check out what it would have cost you then for these titles (Check out just what blank tapes cost in those days!).
Anyone here able to adjust these prices to today's inflation? I'd be interested.
And just what did you get for your money back then? Well, a couple years ago someone here -- and I'm sorry but I can't remember who -- transferred a VHS Magnetic Video of PLANET to DVD-R for me. I haven't kept these things (only the boxes) and no longer even own a VCR, but I was curious to see again just how bad it was -- and it was bad! I remember that by 1985, just before the Playhouse Video remasterings, I could hardly stand to watch PLANET on VHS -- it was just too depressing.
What's the point of all this? Well, there's a fair amount of dissatisfaction with the Blu-rays here, but I was thinking of just how glad I am it's not still 1979, or the decade of the eighties, or even the nineties, when it comes to what I'm watching on home video.
To give everyone here a clear picture of what I'm talking about, there will be two sequels to this post.

Here are some screen captures of the 1979 Magnetic Video VHS transfer of PLANET and captures from the 2008 Fox Blu-ray that I've lifted from DVDBeaver.com. Talk about watching a movie through the bottom of a Coke bottle! This is just unbelievable! And you paid how much for it at the time?

Here's the last set of screen captures comparing the 1979 Magnetic Video VHS transfer of PLANET to the 2008 Fox Blu-ray. I'm not sure, but I doubt PLANET looked much better when CBS broadcast it in the early seventies, and most certainly when it appeared on the local 4:30 Movie and such later in the decade.
Praise the Lawgiver for Blu-ray, though I, too, think that Fox could do even better with the current 1080p transfer.
Not only do I no longer have a VCR, but I don't have a laserdisc player anymore either. If I did, I'd copy the 1991 CBS/Fox "Letterboxed Edition" of PLANET to DVD-R then do screen captures of that to show everyone here just how bad that was.

I was just so shocked that it was so clear...especially noticeable when the wild critters start snatching the astronaut clothes. I swear I could see every leaf and every shadow...like someone finally gave me glasses that were the right prescription. They did a really great job. We sat at the exact center of the dome theater, the best seats according to the technician as that was where the sounds concentrated after being bounced around. Other than the seat pan being too big for my frame and my back was killing me by the end of the two films, it was a great experience to see the apes again on the big screen.

Now you see, here's another who saw projected Blu-rays and says it was great. Whether Blu-rays or 4K hard drives, this is the future of motion picture projection. I'm not against film, just bad prints, which is mostly what you get.

Amazing. Can you imagine if they were still asking that much for movies? And I bought several of those Magnetic Video releases. What a waste. I remember now that my first VHS deck, which only recorded in SP and LP, cost $950. Being the movie nut that I was, I HAD to have it, but boy I wish now I'd saved my money and waited.
I remember how mad I was when laserdiscs died that I'd wasted so much on discs and players. I could have bought a good used car on what I spent on that stuff.

The owner said that a projection of Escape on the big screen may not be ever a possibility with turnout so low, which is a total bummer for me. The costume guy of the Retro Dome (Richard) said that he will see if they can promote a Sci-fi kind of thing at the next convention in town, if he can talk the owner into doing some kind of discount for convention goers. Richard said that he wants to don the ape gear and be Dr. Zaius.

Rory,
Using the Consumer Price Index tables published by the Federal government, today's equivalent price (as compared to November 1979)for the $44.95 PLANET OF THE APES video would be $129.08, the equivalent price for the $18.95 blank VHS tape would be $54.42! Ouch!

An hour and you're still looking at the music?
Hey don't get me wrong. I'm terrible at sight
reading. So in school I'd covert it to tablature,
memorize it, and just stare at the page and
pretend to be reading it. Those fly specks
on the page are not music - merely notation.
a written representation of the music. The
music should flow from within you. Try
playing with your eyes closed, like you're
on stage before the light are up, or you're
Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder or something.
as long as your fingers start in the right place
muscle memory should take care of the rest.

The blu for the OTHER Pierre Boulle novel made
into a film (it also had Michael Wilson doing the scripting) has been officially
announced for Nov. 2nd as a two disc, remastered wonder that will include a new
comprehensive documentary that will cover everything from adapting Boulle's
novel to how they remastered this bad boy. Everyone knows the famous theme (Rod
Serling had it play on his car horn).
So only two Boulle novels have been made into
films and both were Oscar-winning classics of moviedom. Isn't anyone going
to adapt a 3rd Boulle book? He's not around to complain about it any more.

Forgive me if this is old news for I am not an

Johnny Williams for the famed Edward G. Robinson makeup test:
Basically the first music ever used for POTA .
Wouldn't it be groovy if Williams went full circle and scored "Rise of the

for 20 centuries before he'd do it. 20 centuries! But still, now is the time to

Here's the scoop:
We were hacked 3 weeks ago- and are still trying to get everything back up and running so people wont be attcked by malware- bear with us.
a month ago I had a house fire <my wife and grandkiddos we are raising as our own were not harmed thankfully> and we are still battling the insurance company in what they will and wont cover so contractors will be able to actually start fixing something..
At presen5t we are living in a small apartment so mixing has slowed down considerably.
Bear with me- POTA BPOTA and all our other shows will return- but life has taken a shot at me as well as our audio group.

I'll forgive you, Veetus, for mentioning something I've already mentioned.
Yeah, anyone familiar with "Lost in Space" would immediately recognize the music in the APES test reel. I wonder who the DP was?
Did you know that Charles G. Clark, a veteran Fox cinematographer shot a couple "Lost in Space" episodes and several "Land of the Giants" and was an uncredited DP on PLANET, shooting the interior spaceship stuff that was actually the last stuff to be shot?
Did you know that, Veetus?
If John Williams wants to score the new APES, he'll probably get to do it, but I'll bet his rates are pretty high, so it'll most probably go to a newer composer. Who scored the latest X-MEN? Probably that person.

Just went a checkin' on IMDB. I see that the Ralph Winter produced Fox movie X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE was scored by a Harry Gregson-Williams (no relation to John Williams).
Could this Williams get the scoring gig on Winter's RISE OF THE APES (AKA: THE ORIGINS OF THE PLANET OF THE APES)?

I've got most of Boulle's books but I've only
read a few so far. I want to read as many as possible and review them in order.
I still have that book about him you sent.
His books are pretty dry but I'm sure there's
still a gem in there that would make a good movie. Neither "Kwai" or "Apes" were
completely faithful to his books.
