P.S. I'll be at Universal Studios over the weekend checking out the new Harry Potter addition at Islands of Adventure. So I'll get back in touch with you all next week. Oh, wait a minute! I have an Iphone. I can still e-mail and watch Planet of the Apes while standing in those long 2 hour torcherous lines at the theme parks. Thank God for smart phones and tiny little screens. Huh, Rory. ;o)

Greetings, group.  In the tradition of Marvel Apes, I found an issue of DC Super Friends where the super heroes turn into apes.  Only one issue, but worth having for the apes angle, in my opinion.  Enjoy!

They did a whole series of that about 10 years ago where for one issue for each hero (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman) the superhero was an ape. I have the poster for that. A Batman Ape seemed right when Burton was filming POTA.

veetus, thanks so much for that info.  I've been trying to identify the DC version, with no luck.  The first picture in that group you sent is the only one I found so far, and it identified a collection called "DC Goes Ape".  I got a copy, but it is just a collection of re-prints where the various heroes battle intelligent gorilla villains.  That group picture is used on Amazon.com to identify "DC Goes Ape", which is misleading, in my opinion.  I had never heard of "JLApe" until now, but I should now be able to locate the actual comics.  If I come up with them, I'll be sure to share them.  Thanks again for the great info!

        Hello!

It's been a while since I've made some updates to my site, but thanks
to the generosity of several Apes fans, some new additions have been
        made!

        - Rory contributed a larger version of his 1979 Video Flyer that he
posted to pota earlier this week

        - James Christopher contributed some Apes artwork he created

        - Don Reitsam sent photos of a plush Zaius toy in its original box,
as well as photos of the Canadian-exclusive Mego Horse and Wagon
        and Catapult toy

        - Michael Meyer sent photos of an unused Addar model prototype

Thanks to everyone for the contributions!

Greetings, group.  A while ago I posted the Marvel Apes series.  Here is the DC version, with their super heroes turned into apes, as well.  There are nine issues, each appearing in an Annual for one of the various characters.  Published in 1999, all nine issues are here for your downloading pleasure.  Enjoy!

I'm so happy! I was finally able to make a successful foam run. Third time's the charm I guess. It took 3 hours at 200 degrees fahrenheit to bake her, and I adjusted my refining time which gave me an additional minute to work with the foam before it gelled on me. I used a $20 el cheap-o hand mixer from Wally World because I killed the vintage one with my first foam run. Temperature was at 74 degrees fahrenheit, with 47% humidity. Whoo!

Today is the 12th Anniversary of this group's founding. To celebrate there are some new additions to the group.

First, is an internal mini-site that will feature the Marvel Comics adaptations of the POTA films. The mini-site now features the first part of Planet and a new part will be added the first week of every month. The goal is to create an online archive of the comic versions of the POTA movies.

The mini-site can be accessed via this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Marvel.htm

Also, two new pages have been added to the Group website in the One Sheets section. The first new page features the TV series One Sheets created last year with Dave Ballard. The other new page is for the new film. There is just a place holder there for now but hopefully is will be replaced soon.

Both can be accessed via One Sheets page here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/OneSheets.htm and on the mirror site: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/OneSheets.htm

Hope everyone likes the new additions. And thanks for 12 great years!

You know, I've been thinking, if what I"ve read about the script is true, then although we will be getting CGI apes in this film, because it's probably the best way to depict primitive apes, then in the sequel -- if there is one --, when the genetic mutations are supposed to rapidly take the apes to a physiology closer to what we saw in the '68 original, then we could get prosthetics on actors in the next film.

Wayyy back in the day when I was a 10-14 year old- I made Super 8 animated movies with my action figures <nothing spectacular-but had a blast doing it> and while making a POTA one- I needed extra Apes- so I got an old wig, glue and silly putty and crafted extras for my short flic using my 1970's POTA figures and APE tree House.
            ;-)
LOVE the 12" foam make-up IDEA!

Rupert Murdoch, who owns News Corp. who owns Fox who owns POTA , is taking millions less as the economy impacts his company. He's down to $ 22.7 million for the past fiscal year. Execs get taken to task lately for taking big bonuses when it's not justified so it's good to hear of a corporate owner being fair. Here's hoping "Rise of the Apes" puts some food on the table.

When the premise of "Rise of the Apes" is brought up, people sometimes compare it to the 1999 shark flick "Deep Blue Sea": CG sharks are manipulated to find a cure for Alzheimer's and they turn out super-intelligent and run amok (er, swim amok). It's a comparison that will probably continue. I haven't seen this movie but it might be worth a look now that it's on blu-ray.

I saw the old film 'Fantastic Voyage' on cable last weekend. Arthur Jacobs used that film as an example to Dick Zanuck that a science fiction film could be profitable. I hadn't seen 'Fantastic Voyage' for many, many years and had forgotten the name of the ship was the Proteus.

In the scene in the cave in Planet, Zaius quotes the Sacred Scrolls, "Proteus brought the upright beast into the garden and chained him to a tree...".

I'm wondering if the use Proteus in Planet is just a coincidence or was it a shout out to 'Fantastic Voyage'.

And if it was a shout out does that mean Dick Zanuck is the 'upright beast'? :-)

And only 8 mil is cash.  The rest is bonus money, that dropped 20%,
and stock options and use of the company jet.  Actually, it's common
in Japan.  Even heads of companies like Toyota & Sony don't get the
100s of millions a hedge fund a guy's pulling down.  That goes back
into the company.  He also gets a little over 100Gs for salary for
his chairmanship of Sky TV, so the 22.7 is total combined value
of his compensation package.  Pretty reasonable for a Mogul.

As a film buff I'm always surprised when I read here that so and so has never seen this or that.  I just assume that because I'm a film buff, made so because PLANET is a film (or movie) and got me interested in all movies (or films) that the story would be the same with everyone else into APES, but it doesn't seem to be the case.  I guess it's just me, but when I was a little kid, going to the movies was a big event and so I really love theatre going, though in the last ten years it's kind of fading away, mostly because movies have become so bad, but twenty years ago, I was going to a movie a week and renting more on VHS and laserdisc.  Now, I mostly rent DVDs from Netflix, but I still tend to see at least two movies a month at the theatre.

Anyway, DEEP BLUE SEA.... saw it when it came out.  Typical over-the-top action/thriller from Renny Harlin, not the most sophisticated or subtle of filmmakers.  I didn't recall the "cure for Alzheimer's" plot point, just the amount of people eaten by sharks, which was really the only point of the movie.  Hopefully, RISE OF THE APES (AKA: THE BIRTH OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, or: How James Eventually Goes Bananas), will play up more its SF aspects and less any action with CGI apes beating up humans -- because that would be stupid!  Right, James?

Thanks Mike but this group ISN'T what it is because of the efforts of just one or two people. All of it's members make it what it is from contributions from members like William, Rory, Jeff and Tim to a lot of behind the scenes support from Dave and Glen and many others.
It's because of these and many other members that this group is still thriving after 12 years.

James, were you here at the very beginning, 12 years ago?  I didn't own a computer back then!

Thanks Bill but ACC always had an end date to it as did Cornelius' Journal to which ACC was a follow-up. Both had fixed time frames that they dealt with. One of the great things about LFTL is that it is not telling a linear narrative so the concept is such that it can continue indefinitely. The good news is that a follow-up to ACC is already in the works, the bad news is it won't be starting until November 2011.

The problem is, realistically, if you're to wait for natural selection to turn modern day apes into the fictional future apes of POTA, you're going to be waiting millions of years!
Fox hasn't got millions of years to wait.... and neither do we.

Personally, I like the ambiguity of both the Boulle novel and the first film in regards to the "hows?" of it, but I find with age the explanations of the sequels and most fan suppositions to be pretty far-fetched and even silly.  POTA isn't really hard SF anyway and isn't supposed to be.  It's allegory and not really out to make anymore plausible sense than Gulliver in the land of the Lilliputians.

Stars all the time brag about their fims but Lithgow to my knoweledge is a great actor and I cant see him saying what he has if not possibly true. True in the sense that its not hyperbole, or part of his job. And I dont remember any cast member other Michael Clark Dunkin bragging about Apes 2001, except about the ending , which he thought was great. Is it just wishfull thinking on my part?

I don't know if RISE OF THE APES will be a great movie -- When was the last time Hollywood made one of those? -- but I'm keeping my fingers crossed it'll be a good movie and enough of a box office hit to get us a follow-up in another two or three years.

I think all POTA fans should try to be as positive as possible about it.  Hope for the best, but don't expect the worse.  If there's enough positive vibes coming from us, maybe it might just help this being something.

Yes, we live in the instant quickie world of Hollywood. Evolution is a long process and another explanation would be needed for the apes
            to take over. Elaine

So far it sounds like the plot of "Rise of the Apes" is a little more extensive than "Deep Blue Sea" . It did seem like a shark feeding
frenzy type of movie. Genetic engineering seems to be a common theme for intelligent animals in today's movies. I would prefer to have the apes just evolve naturally. Elaine

The problem is, realistically, if you're to wait for natural selection to turn modern day apes into the fictional future apes of POTA, you're going to be waiting millions of years!
Fox hasn't got millions of years to wait.... and neither do we.

The idea of a disease contributing to the evolution of the apes can spark the imagination. Many questions can be raised like why would the disease affect the intelligence of primates yet kill off domestic pets. Would monkeys and humans also have  increased intelligence etc? There is a potential for quite a few stories here. Elaine

I agree.  Leaving it an unknown cause, act of nature, or only hint at something, leaves more to the viewers imagination; leaving yet another level to always discuss.  Personally, I always thought it could have been something the astronauts brought back from space - perhaps the same disease that killed the dogs and cats.
