.htmlSo that means we can make a bad movie then. How does that explain the big campaign of the Go Ape festivals. Battle was a bad sequel because it was last-I must remember that...

.htmlAgree. It amazing that the 2002 Apes made the money it did. I was hoping it would and hoping a sequel would clean things up but it did not happen that way.
Ten years later it took for the so called wounds to heal. It is very possiblw that the new Apes can be excellent but no one will go see it, and that frightning. Their have been many good movies in sci-fi that get ignored so im keeping my fingers crossed..John M.

With that outlay, a return of $350 Million worldwide isn't that great. Fox had an immediate problem, how to produce a sequel that was bigger than the first, since that's what the public expects of sequels these days, but would cost the studio less to make than the first given its boxoffice prospects.

.htmlHow did I write 2002 , 2001 obviously. Everybody has their opinions and all of them will be worthless sooner than you think. In only 7 months the S### is going to hit the fan and I hope this new film can turn everything around. Will people go and see a sci-fi film that isnt an action fest. We will, but the average schmoe who has our love of Apes in his hands are going to make that determination. It scares me alittle. Todays movie public is not as forgiven as it once was. The 2001 apes made money and if 2011 apes has any major or even minor faults I think the public will ignore it as just another dumb Apes film. I hope im wrong and its a great film. The rumors are good but that doesnt garantee anything...John M.

How did I write 2002 , 2001 obviously. Everybody has their opinions and all
of them will be worthless sooner than you think. In only 7 months the S### is
going to hit the fan and I hope this new film can turn everything around. Will
people go and see a sci-fi film that isnt an action fest. We will, but the
average schmoe who has our love of Apes in his hands are going to make that
determination. It scares me alittle. Todays movie public is not as forgiven as
it once was. The 2001 apes made money and if 2011 apes has any major or even
minor faults I think the public will ignore it as just another dumb Apes film. I
hope im wrong and its a great film. The rumors are good but that doesnt garantee
anything...John M.

I'm sort of fine with the idea of CGI apes in the coming film, simply due to the first genetically engineered apes probably looking very closely like the apes we currently have now. It'd be more-or-less impossible to have the proper proportionality with actors in suits, so CGI it has to be, unfortunately. However, I do hope in later films, when the apes become more humanoid (they will, right?), that CGI is replaced by actors in make-up.
I really prefer having real, tangible actors, who can express themselves through their costumes giving their characters "soul", than sprites with hollow and shallow characters. I wasn't sold on Avatar's look and felt that the characters looked plastic. Sure, they were better animations than done previously, but they had a long way to go to convince me that I wasn't watching some computer generated world and characters.
So, for expediency's sake, I'll be fine with CGI for this film, but if the apes evolve to a humanoid form, then I'd want real actors.

I did not care for the CGI in Avatar because to me it looked fake or fantasy like, like on Sci-Fi books littering book stores. It was probably meant that way so im probably illinformed. Forgot to mention that I did spend Halloween as a gorilla...blacked out my eyes and used my son's pullover and makeup only took five minutes. I used my army inspired clothing and my son's bandolier with club attached and actually made a commanding presence at that party I went to...One of the humans took a photo of me on a go-kart, and promised to e-mail me the photos, but alas, human promises are made to be broken.
I still prefer the gluing down foam latex appliances vs. a pullover mask, but at least I got my ape on!

There's currently a commercial running where a chimpanzee goes into a drug store to get some cold medication. It's a midget in a suit. It looks good, very much like that movie about the chimp that played baseball with that guy from "Friends" -- remember that movie? -- but it still looks like a midget in a suit. Even though the suits have gotten better, that sort of thing really went out with Clyde and that beach movie. Even Rick Baker in a gorilla suit is Rick Baker in a gorilla suit, and GREYSTOKE was great, but it's still actors in a suit.
The CGI apes will work, but it depends on how well the film is structured and paced to get you to suspend disbelief and just except the CGI apes as real characters that'll be the true test for this one, just as the original succeeded in doing that with the Chambers makeup designs.
Somebody wants to make a new-retro GODZILLA movie, using the original Godzilla design, but is a man-in-a-suit thing really going to work these days? I'll bet they go CGI with it.

If the first weekend success of POTA2001 proved anything it was that the 20th Century Fox hype machine could sell a turd movie as the Second Coming and the public would fall for it -- if only for three days, but that was enough.

If there's a sequel, I think the possibility is strong for a partial return to prosthetics. The apes in the next one will be human-like characters, that'll require an actor and a performance. Motion capture can do that, but what if they get Anthony Hopkins to play a Zaius-like character? Is he going to want to just be motion capture? Background apes would certainly be CGI though.

Still, an actor is a real being and can add character to the character that they play. A computer sprite is mostly just a computer sprite and is essentially hollow inside, even if elaborately done. I can take a sprite and suspend my disbelief for it if it's warranted, as I think it's warranted in Rise, but the more humanoid that the apes become, the more I'd want a real person behind that facade, because I think an actor adds more to the character. If you can suspend your disbelief for computer sprites, then why not with actors in suits (if the suits and make-up are done well, the less suspension is needed)? Being tangible is an important thing for me, and even if I can accept the make-believe of CGI for Rise, I'd be disappointed if they don't give us some tangible personality and essence to the characters in subsequent films if those characters are more humanoid in appearance. Avatar was, for me, a sort of emperor's new clothes and I wasn't as
impressed as they wanted me to be.
> The CGI apes will work, but it depends on how well the film is structured and paced to get you to suspend disbelief and just except the CGI apes as real characters that'll be the true test for this one, just as the original succeeded in doing that with the Chambers makeup designs.
I do accept that the story is king and will be the thing that distracts from any deficiencies that the CGI/make-up might expose.
> Somebody wants to make a new-retro GODZILLA movie, using the original Godzilla design, but is a man-in-a-suit thing really going to work these days? I'll bet they go CGI with it.
No, it wouldn't work. But good make-up and suits can work in Apes, depending on what characters they're portraying and how humanoid looking they are.

I saw this commercial the other day of a CG Ape walking through a supermarket.
I forgot what the commercial was promoting because the CG ape looked so damn real.
And I just thought, damn, this could be a sneak preview of what is to come.
The ape looked really amazing.

Are you talking about the commercial I just mentioned -- the chimp buying cold and flu medicine?
Al, that was a midget in a suit.

This is pretty wild. POTA got the musical
treatment on "The Simpsons" but it was spared in real life. Here's a big splashy
"Spiderman" musical with songs by the U2 boys and a reported $ 1 million a week
to put on. Profiled on "60 Minutes". Hey, James Franco was in the "Spiderman"
movies so I say "on topic".

Really? I've seen it a couple of times, and didn't think it was
realistic-looking at all. Or, more precisely, the CG look was very
good, but the animation was really bad.
It's kind of like the CGed young Jeff Bridges in the TRON: LEGACY

very fake-looking, IMO.

I've seen this commercial many times now. It's not CGI, it's a midget in a suit, but it doesn't look as if he's actually in the store, but in front of green screen and put into the store shots.

They've already announced that Jane Badler, who played the main baddie in the original series, will have a recurring role as the mom of the new baddie. Now it looks like Marc Singer, the star of the original show, will also return as a resistance fighter.
What this has to do with anything is that Singer played Dalton in the POTA episode "The Gladiator". Maybe some of the POTA fans went on to follow him in "V" or as "The Beastmaster". He's continued to work but has had a lower profile than those days. I never did follow the "V" series but loved the original miniseries with it's Nazi allegory. I've enjoyed this new version, though it could use a shot of better writing and some subtlety. Hopefully they've worked on that. But the cast is great so I'm rooting for it, especially with Singer back on board.

I just remembered that Leslie Nielsen co-starred with Charlton Heston in a couple of things. A "Studio One" episode called "Battleship Bismark" (in 1949!), and the film COUNTERPOINT in 1967 -- which I haven't seen since the early '70s and has never been on video.

I'm going to predict he wins Best Actor. I just sense a "buzz" about it even though I haven't seen the movie yet. But, if he wins, I don't think it'll affect RISE much. People don't go to movies anymore because some star is in it. They go for the movie itself.

I think there will be one, but maybe you're right. Paramount didn't start promoting the new TRUE GRIT until about a month and a half ago. I think you risk people getting tired of hearing about a film if you promote it too early.

There was also a recent release of the complete score to Goldsmith's FIRST BLOOD plus a lot of bonus tracks. It's $19.95, but the STAR TREK V CD is nearly $30. I ordered FIRST BLOOD, but STV? I think I'll pass for now, which means that my Goldsmith collection will probably never be complete.
I wish they'd reissue PLANET OF THE APES. I'll bet there's stuff recorded during that score that's in a vault somewhere. Stuff like trying to get the instruments to sound just right and Goldsmith talking to the musicians and such.

Holy crap, Batman! You're Google Alert features this one major piece of news!
Can this mean a new Blu-ray edition of PLANET is in the works?!!!
I suspect so, probably an "Ultimate Edition" that will be released just prior to RISE OF THE APES.
I told you guys we should be writing to Fox to do a new 5.1 mix and try to include the extras we've wanted for years.
I hope some of you are writing. I already have. Looks like June 2011 will be pretty exciting.

.html Apemania is basically Brian Penikas. It's kind of a profitable hobby when he's not doing movie work. He hires as things come up, whether ape-pearances or collectibles. If he decides to close shop I'm sure he will get the word out.

.htmlThose screen captures are not revealing. The before shots just look like a frame with the contrast all the way down and the brightness all the way up. I know their not doing anything suspiscious it just is a poor example that might have been exagerated to show whats being done. Anyway, It will no doubt be on Blu ray next year. Fox would not do this unless they can recoup the cost and if they are smart they should do all the Apes. If its about iconic films only then the original might be the only one done. The audio has to be new or it will be a tough sell to most people, though most people dont care about audio anyway. Whatever I am looking at it positivly and hoping for the best. John M.

The jist of my email is that audio needs attention and that all the apes films should be done. Anyway I felt I should write something since Fox and I go back about 30 years in the complaining department. Take care John M.

.html There's no way they'll release all the movies again. Maybe the first one if they can come up with some extras.
But they could just be doing this for down the road. Reminds me of when they released the cartoons in the Caesar head, then 6 months later they released them individually with improved picture. I think these things keep selling better than they expect.

| Subject: POTA on "Hollywood Treasures" |
.htmlOn Dec. 1st the Sy Fy channel series "Hollywood Treasures" had an episode that included a trip to Ed Gogin's house to check out his POTA collection. He started by wanting one costume of every ape. He had a small but sweet collection of costumes. They looked at his gorilla costume, which included ammo belt, club and boots. The host said it's rare to see ape costumes complete and original and speculated such a costume could bring $20,000 - $30,000 now, whereas they used to go for $1,000. They also looked at his orangutan costume, which had the glyphs and orang boots. He also had some pullover masks (presumably from the movies). The host estimated his clubs could go for $ 5,000 each, an ape rifle for $5,000 - $10,000 because "they just don't exist (anymore)". Gogin's collection was estimated at $ 100,000.
In his yard he had the Lawgiver statue that was owned by Arthur Jacobs and then his widow Natalie until the late '90's. He bought it from her. A copy was made for Jacobs' pal Sammy Davis Jr. but this was the only full-sized Lawgiver used on screen. The point of the show is to find stuff and auction it (for the famous "Profiles in History" auctions). The host said getting the Lawgiver and putting it on the cover of the auction catalog was a holy grail. He estimated the Lawgiver at $100,000 - $200,000. Gogin had outbid Fox 12 years ago, who wanted to put it in their archive. Gogin had a uncomfortable look on his face as he heard how much this stuff could go for, I guess because his wife is pressuring him to sell, but he opted not to. So that's where the Lawgiver stayed (Orange County, CA.).
The host said, "Items from POTA are highly collected. Everything from that movie sells for really good prices". Of course, he added the new movie is making the items even more "hot".
