On Dec. 1st the Sy Fy channel series "Hollywood Treasures" had an episode that included a trip to Ed Gogin's house to check out his POTA collection. He started by wanting one costume of every ape. He had a small but sweet collection of costumes. They looked at his gorilla costume, which included ammo belt, club and boots. The host said it's rare to see ape costumes complete and original and speculated such a costume could bring $20,000 - $30,000 now, whereas they used to go for $1,000. They also looked at his orangutan costume, which had the glyphs and orang boots. He also had some pullover masks (presumably from the movies). The host estimated his clubs could go for $ 5,000 each, an ape rifle for $5,000 - $10,000 because "they just don't exist (anymore)". Gogin's collection was estimated at $ 100,000.
In his yard he had the Lawgiver statue that was owned by Arthur Jacobs and then his widow Natalie until the late '90's. He bought it from her. A copy was made for Jacobs' pal Sammy Davis Jr. but this was the only full-sized Lawgiver used on screen. The point of the show is to find stuff and auction it (for the famous "Profiles in History" auctions). The host said getting the Lawgiver and putting it on the cover of the auction catalog was a holy grail. He estimated the Lawgiver at $100,000 - $200,000. Gogin had outbid Fox 12 years ago, who wanted to put it in their archive. Gogin had a uncomfortable look on his face as he heard how much this stuff could go for, I guess because his wife is pressuring him to sell, but he opted not to. So that's where the Lawgiver stayed (Orange County, CA.).
The host said, "Items from POTA are highly collected. Everything from that movie sells for really good prices". Of course, he added the new movie is making the items even more "hot".

Those screen captures are not revealing. The before shots just look like a frame with the contrast all the way down and the brightness all the way up. I know their not doing anything suspiscious it just is a poor example that might have been exagerated to show whats being done. Anyway, It will no doubt be on Blu ray next year. Fox would not do this unless they can recoup the cost and if they are smart they should do all the Apes. If its about iconic films only then the original might be the only one done. The audio has to be new or it will be a tough sell to most people, though most people dont care about audio anyway. Whatever I am looking at it positivly and hoping for the best. John M.
My theory is that Fox will come out with an "Ultimate Edition" (or some such name) Blu-ray of just the original prior to the reboot's release, and that the new Blu-ray will not have the Lawgiver intro on it at the beginning, but rather a trailer for the new movie -- which will be presented as a prequel to the classic film. Whether or not there will be improved 5.1 sound, or new features is anyone's guess....
But, that's my theory and for now, and I'm sticking to it.

Well I started and sent an e-mail to fox att. Shawn Belston who is over seeing this so let the pain in the necks start hounding Fox agian. The jist of my email is that audio needs attention and that all the apes films should be done. Anyway I felt I should write something since Fox and I go back about 30 years in the complaining department. Take care John M.
OK, I'm being serious now....
We have been complaining for a very long time about these things. Looks like Fox is finally giving PLANET the repect it deserves, but I can't help wondering what will yet be lacking that'll still keep us wanting more.
I wish there was a way to get in touch with this Shawn Belston and perhaps have him post here to answer our questions. I have also thought that maybe a letter to Fox signed by everyone here would be approperate. I talking something made up by James perhaps, with a POTA Yahoo Group letterhead, and merely having all our names and email addresses at the bottom. The draft could be worked on by all of us here, James prints it up and sends it (it'll only cost you a little time and a stamp, James -- or I could do it!), though I dread that there would be too many sequel requests that would make the whole thing to complicated and silly. If we could just stick with the original for now and what we'd really like to see and hear on a dream Blu-ray.
Anyway, those are my thoughts at this moment. By the way, what email address are you sending to, John?

There's no way they'll release all the movies again. Maybe the first one if they can come up with some extras.
But they could just be doing this for down the road. Reminds me of when they released the cartoons in the Caesar head, then 6 months later they released them individually with improved picture. I think these things keep selling better than they expect.
Yeah, I really don't know how long Fox can go to the well with these films. I think they'll just stick to the original, since I believe the new film is going to be presented as a prequel to the original and any sequels to it are going to be in an alternate timeline from the last three original sequels.

By chance did anyone record this? I have it on my DVR but it is not transferable.
I'll be recording the repeat this Wednesday morning on my DVR (got it already set up), and I can then copy it off that to DVD-R.
You sure your DVR doesn't have video outputs, James, that would allow you to copy things? It should.
Alex probably is the one to trust for this kind of thing.

There's a chance if they're planning something it'll be released when "Rise" hits DVD. That's a year from now. They're going to have to come up with some extras. Probably they'll give the original blu-rays a nice push when "Rise" is in theaters.

To me film elements and audio are the most important issue when wanting apes material(IMHO). A nice simple edition with few frills a nice small box and end it their, like the old criterion collections on laserdisk. Going on again, take care John M.

I have to ask.... Is that the email address for Fox movies on the Fox Channel, or is that for 20th Century Fox movies at the studio? There's so many damn Foxes out there, you have to make sure.
I said it years ago here that for me "Planet of the Apes" is the original film, and therefore any news on improvements to the original elements gets me going ape. The sequels and everything else POTA is just gravy. I care about them but I'm not crazy concerned.
PLANET really deserves another go around on Blu-ray if only to get the isolated score track the sequels all got, which reminds me that I also wish Varese Sarabande would do a new CD edition of the Goldsmith score.
I do have an interest in the toys though, and I've been wondering if Sideshow or others are eyeing the situation. This new novel thing is intriguing, as is the Lexicon.
And then there's my dream of visiting Southern California and going to Malibu Creek and Point Dume, and hunting down Jeff Krueger -- AND THROWING A NET OVER HIM!

I knew this but I had forgotten it. HDMI, which I've been living with for more than two years, made me completely forget about DVI, which I never had. I jumped directly from component inputs to HDMI. Never had any device that had DVI output.
Anyway, I'm going to go ape with that email address. Just wonder if anyone on the other end pays the slightest attention.

I'm a big fan of the TV series. It has flaws, of course--simplistic storytelling, corny jokes, some seriously awful guest-star acting--but it also has genuine chemistry among the lead actors, and for me, that makes it worth watching. <.html

Sounds like those Sony Bravia TVs in the store.
they split the screen and "show" how they Bravia
engine is "improving" the picture. Unfortunately
for Sony they TV is surrounded by every other
TV in the store. So you can easily do a side
by side, over & under, comparision to the TVs
next to it and see that the Bravia side isn't
so much improved as the before side is
messed up with color destauration, etc...

Well, I thought it was on earlier this morning, but it's actually on right now, 12:30 Eastern Time. I think what Sy Fy did was run the entire show this morning because the season final is tonight. I've got it recorded in my DVR and can make a DVD from that, but hopefully Al has it and can do his thing.
So, now I've seen the guy who owns the original Lawgiver Statue. I think his name is Ed Grogan. He also has complete costumes and some props. But he's very attached to this stuff, must be a huge fan of PLANET, and as long as he takes good care of it, I'm happy it's in good hands.
I've never seen this show before but I have to say it leaves me with a bad taste. There's something kind of tacky about it. It's like they're simply exploiting the interest in this stuff, and it's really all about the love of money rather than the love of movies and items from them. I say good for Ed Grogan not selling The Lawgiver, though I really do wish Fox had simply outbid him years ago and it was now in the secure hands of the studio. Maybe someday it will.

.htmlIve always felt that way. The hobby of collecting memorabilia and that applies to Apes, Muscle cars, Posters even electronics is becoming a comoditity and the fan who is of average means cannot join in because the wealthy collector is making an investment, not buying for the love of it and prices are escallating.
I first noticed this with muscle cars around 1990. I could of had a mint perfect, original build sheet, exactly like it came out of the factory Plymouth GTX 6 pack for 10 grand. Now I saw the same car going for 100,000 thousand! dollars. Auctions and the rich man building a portfolio is killing all of these hobbies since the early 90s. Collectables are getting eaten up like a virus on the prowl. Same thing happened with my Beatles Butcher shot album. I got it for 100 dollars in 1985 sold it in 1993 for 2000 dollars and now it can fetch 50,000 dollars or more.
I get mad because the people buying these artifacts dont have a love of them but a love of money. Their are people who say that its because of the rich investor that these collectables are around but thats BS. Even I was offered good money for my Apes stuff but refused because I felt I could get more. Its an infection that even I am getting, Human nature is wonderful.
Sorry for going on, John M.

Panasonic right now probably makes the best Plasmas since Pioneer has forgone making them. LCD(LED) is almost anybody's game but Samsung is very good. The reason I make these statements is that I calibrated TVs for 20 years and you get to know who makes what and who makes the best for the average customer. Real great TVs are from Runco and other brands alot of folks dont know to well. Sorry for going off topic. I think it just shows the low esteem
Fox holds for their own work. They
and the other studios are always
auctioning off props, costumes etc...
Luckily. Otherwise private collectors
and places like Planet Hollywood
and other movie museums wouldn't
have a shot at pieces like that.

You're right about that. Aussie car collectors can't stand it when
people take an Aussie Ford Falcon XB GT and turn it into a BoB, (Black On
Black), Mad Max Interceptor. There are other cars that have the same body
style and do with a bit of work, but some people are purists. And there
are two types of guitar collectors, Players & Wall Hangers. Some want
a late 50's Les Paul with all original hardware to hang on the wall and just
gather value and dust. They couldn't care less if the neck is out of line,
or the frets buzz, as long as everything right down to the screws is original.
But a working musician will have it re-fretted, change out the machine heads,
pickups or whatever it takes to keep it playing right and sound great.
Both think the other is so wrong, but it's just points of view.

One of Mineo's last roles was Milo Sr. in "Escape". Both Milo and Mineo met tragic ends. Franco has already played Mineo's "Rebel Without a Cause" costar James Dean, one of his earliest roles that got him a Golden Globe. Franco's first film as a director was "The Ape", in which he shared an apartment with a talkative gorilla. He recently sold a documentary he did about "Saturday Night Live", but his directing career is still in the formative stages so his playing the role would be a good bargaining chip I think. If Franco played Mineo doing "Escape" that would plain rock. Though he might be too tall, but he can slouch.

I don't think this is such great news -- and I'll tell you why.
You all here love APES, I'm assuming, everything APES, and you don't like it being made fun of or put down in any way -- well, except for BATTLE maybe (and I have my issues with BENEATH).
Anyway, any bio I've read of Mineo talks about his appearance in ESCAPE as THE low point in his career, as a role almost approaching a humiliation, something done out of desperation to keep working, as if he'd stooped to doing a porno just to stay in "show business," and we've read that he didn't enjoy being in the ape makeup.
I'll bet any film on his life will play up -- in exaggerated form -- this episode in Mineo's career as a funny but sad and pathetic end to what had started out so promisingly. They'll mock ESCAPE, they'll mock the makeup. They'll do this because it's easy.
This is something I do not want to see. If they skip the ESCAPE appearance, then I'd be fine with the movie, as I like Mineo and think he was a good actor and from all accounts a very nice person, but if they were to do what I describe above, then I'll wish it were never made.

[pota] Re: Hollywood Treasures

I find it amusing that so many sites are reporting on this, and yet hardly any of them have bothered to mention the synchronicity of Franco, an actor appearing in the next Apes film, portraying an actor who appeared in a previous Apes film. The emphasis is all on the James Dean connection.

.htmlThat's a good point but such is the way of the world. Most people look down on the "Ape" sequels. It takes a certain person to look beyond the low budgets and the "monkey masks" to see them as more than B movies. Even Franco was kind of dubious about them, saying, "Those masks have cult value, but..." :
http://www.collider.com/2010/10/25/james-franco-interview-rise-of-the-apes-danny-boyle-2012-olympics-london/
Doobie, dubious. But it would still be kind of interesting if they used the Chambers makeup on such a scene. Maybe Franco would be fair in his portrayal, especially if POTA turns out to be beddy beddy good to him. Or more likely it'll never get made.
Probably Franco would play James Dean, since he already got a Golden Globe for the role. Who would play Mineo? Seth Rogan?
Here's Franco doing his best James Dean:
